[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

After waiting all season to jump in the Rolls Royston, I had the Dutchman all written up as a Differential and the mouse hovering over the ‘confirm transfers’ button only for the inevitable red card to ruin my Everton-related Differential dreams.

Growing up as an Everton fan does prepare you somewhat for footballing disappointments, so despite having to throw that one back in the pond for another week, I managed to pick myself up in time to fish out another three for you to chew over. As we continue our countdown to Gameweek Ten then, it’s time to look over the Scout Selection Committee’s Differential picks for this week…..

James Milner

With such a rich source of midfield talent available, rest and rotation is a big problem to anyone considering investing in Man City, particularly with their Champions League involvement to factor in. Against all the odds, though, it is James Milner who looks the most rotation proof right now. Nothing is guaranteed where Roberto Mancini is involved of course, but Milner is the only attacking midfielder to have started all of the last three league matches, and as Samir Nasri and Adam Johnson both started in the Carling Cup tie on Wednesday, it’s pretty clear where he sits in the pecking order at present.

A look through the FPL statistics for the season throws up a lot of unexpected results; if you work it out on a ‘per minute played’ basis then Milner has a better EA PPI and overall points return than David Silva, and has also picked up more bonus points. Priced at just 7.5 to Silva’s 10.2 and owned by just 2.4%, Milner could prove to be a huge differential over the next few weeks then, and considering City’s goal scoring form, he looks like an excellent source of fantasy points.

Somen Tchoyi

After a poor start to the season, Roy Hodgson’s West Brom side have looked much improved in recent games and after two solid wins on the trot, they will be full of confidence going into their home tie against Liverpool.

Before last week Hodgson looked settled on a Peter Odemwingie and Shane Long front line, but with a knee injury set to keep Long out for 6 weeks, he will almost certainly draft in a ready-made replacement rather than try to change their formation. Somen Tchoyi is the obvious choice to replace him up front having already played there in pre-season, and priced at just 5.1 in the FPL game and classed as a midfielder, Tchoyi looks great value.

In many ways, Tchoyi is the definition of a differential. He’s cheap, has low ownership and as a midfielder playing out of position, he should provide excellent value for money over the short to medium term. Four home ties in next six, including games against the struggling Bolton and Wigan should more than make up for a tricky trip to Arsenal next week, so if you’re looking for a cheap fifth midfielder then Tchoyi looks as good an option as any right now.

Hugo Rodallega

If you take a look at the current league standings then you’d be forgiven for dismissing Wigan as a source of Fantasy points; they sit joint bottom of the league after six defeats on the trot, and have managed just six goals all season. Thankfully there’s more to it than that; the Latics have looked much improved in recent weeks, and will consider themselves very unlucky not to have picked up a result against Bolton or Newcastle.

Home ties against Fulham and Blackburn as well as a trip to Wolves in their next three should give then plenty of chances to pick up goals, and with the return to fitness of Hugo Rodallega they’ve finally got someone who can put the ball in the net.

With 11 attempts on target against Newcastle (that’s more than Man United, Chelsea, Tottenham or Arsenal last week) it seems incredible that they didn’t get more from that game. Although Rodallega didn’t get on the score sheet last week, he looked sharp in front of goal and gave Wigan an edge that they’ve been missing in recent games. Priced at just 6.0 and with an ownership of 1.9%, he could prove to a decent differential over the next few games.

"Thinking through all this, I have a feeling that, if used right and with good timing, the hit can become a very powerful tool. But then again, there are blokes who have just done 5 transfers all season, and are in the overall top 10."

    + billions

Timing is key with a view to long term returns. I only took one hit last year but wished I'd done a few more. Looking at the transfers made of the top 10 overall finishers, most did 42-44 transfers.

As you said, there's a time and a place.

While it's quiet here's my team for this week:

    Vorm

Jose Enrique - Woodgate - Taylor ( Swa)

    Nani - Silva - VDV (C) - The Pilkman

    Rooney - Sturridge - RVP

Subs: Kenny - Simpson - Dyer - Boyata

    Absolutely horror-struck by Boyata's injury.

My defenders seem cursed this year:

    Bought Gabbidon - injured immediately
Swapped for Boyata - injured immediately
    Bought Bramble - arrested immediately
Swapped for Woodgate - injured immediately

Krul and Simpson? It's time to be shipping Newcastle defenders out, not bringing two of them in. Not too good. 😕

They are the best options in there price range.
Its called rotating defenders..ship them out if you please but i have Simpson and will only need to play him for home games.
Id rather Simpson and a big hitter as opposed to Terry and Ba or Agbon...

      Very nice.

If it were me I'd be tempted to play England's Brave John Terry over Gutierrez. Stoke don't concede many and although Chelsea may well concede to Arsenal Terry has some threat at set-pieces, the defending of which is not exactly Arsenal's forte.

    Vorm
    ShawX Enrique Simpson
    VDV Silva Sinclair Nani
    RVP Agbon Studge
Subs – Given, Brown, Moses, Collins.
    0 FT 0.2 Bank

For GW11, I'm considering Agbon > Roo; Nani > 5 or below MF. Thoughts?

Petrov and... Brown maybe? Toss up between him and Dyer, but when in doubt, play the attacking player (especially at home).

    Good luck everyone this weekend.
May your goals be hattricks. May your assists be goals. May your passes be assists and may your opponents forget how to pass 😀

So before I have a brief kip until 30 mins before the deadline which will enable us all to see the Man U - Everton lineups......

I've posted more advice tonight than in my entire history, but haven't really been given any back. I'm sorry for being tough on people here that I regard as friends but it's just tough love, believe me.

    So:

    Bego (Vorm)
Woodgate, Walker, Enrique (N. Taylor, Simpson)
    M. Petrov, VDV, Silva, Ramsey (Bannan)
    Rooney, RVP, Sturridge
0.9 in the bank and one free transfer.

Seems good for the next few weeks, but just one question: worth shifting out Bannan for someone else since he may not be back for yonks if convicted of drink driving? Thinking of Pilkington or Brunt for him.

    Any reasoned opinions welcome.

    I

Im thinking it is because every time you post you complain about getting no advice before-hand.
      Just a guess...

What has that got to do with anything?
I have been here for just under 2 seasons and lately all i see from you is "i always offer advice but never get any in return"....?

Not necessary to replace Bannan this week. Go into next week with 2 freebies. Some other need may arise by then.

You could do Bannan to Allen/Pilkington which might be a good shout for this week. Always make me nervous getting in budget players that have just scored though.

      Bannan -> Pilkington.

Pilk is at 5 ppg for the season; 7ppg in the last 4.

McLeish has suggested he may rotate around and Bannan is just as much at risk as anyone else.

Yep. Missed Pilky's price rise this week but was seriously considering it.

Bannan not looking a good prospect and even though I hate to admit it, in that I think I may be jumping from one bandwagon to another, then Bannan to Pilks makes sense over the medium term, so thanks for your advice: Don, Mahone and Jafa. Just doing it now.

Unfortunately in the price bracket up to 6.0 your options have crap games / are crap. I would place Pilkington ahead of Brunt on fixtures and attacking points. Rodwell, Moses and Dyer are leftfield picks that may strike gold and have comparable fixtures.

      On the other hand, 6.1...
