[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

After waiting all season to jump in the Rolls Royston, I had the Dutchman all written up as a Differential and the mouse hovering over the ‘confirm transfers’ button only for the inevitable red card to ruin my Everton-related Differential dreams.

Growing up as an Everton fan does prepare you somewhat for footballing disappointments, so despite having to throw that one back in the pond for another week, I managed to pick myself up in time to fish out another three for you to chew over. As we continue our countdown to Gameweek Ten then, it’s time to look over the Scout Selection Committee’s Differential picks for this week…..

James Milner

With such a rich source of midfield talent available, rest and rotation is a big problem to anyone considering investing in Man City, particularly with their Champions League involvement to factor in. Against all the odds, though, it is James Milner who looks the most rotation proof right now. Nothing is guaranteed where Roberto Mancini is involved of course, but Milner is the only attacking midfielder to have started all of the last three league matches, and as Samir Nasri and Adam Johnson both started in the Carling Cup tie on Wednesday, it’s pretty clear where he sits in the pecking order at present.

A look through the FPL statistics for the season throws up a lot of unexpected results; if you work it out on a ‘per minute played’ basis then Milner has a better EA PPI and overall points return than David Silva, and has also picked up more bonus points. Priced at just 7.5 to Silva’s 10.2 and owned by just 2.4%, Milner could prove to be a huge differential over the next few weeks then, and considering City’s goal scoring form, he looks like an excellent source of fantasy points.

Somen Tchoyi

After a poor start to the season, Roy Hodgson’s West Brom side have looked much improved in recent games and after two solid wins on the trot, they will be full of confidence going into their home tie against Liverpool.

Before last week Hodgson looked settled on a Peter Odemwingie and Shane Long front line, but with a knee injury set to keep Long out for 6 weeks, he will almost certainly draft in a ready-made replacement rather than try to change their formation. Somen Tchoyi is the obvious choice to replace him up front having already played there in pre-season, and priced at just 5.1 in the FPL game and classed as a midfielder, Tchoyi looks great value.

In many ways, Tchoyi is the definition of a differential. He’s cheap, has low ownership and as a midfielder playing out of position, he should provide excellent value for money over the short to medium term. Four home ties in next six, including games against the struggling Bolton and Wigan should more than make up for a tricky trip to Arsenal next week, so if you’re looking for a cheap fifth midfielder then Tchoyi looks as good an option as any right now.

Hugo Rodallega

If you take a look at the current league standings then you’d be forgiven for dismissing Wigan as a source of Fantasy points; they sit joint bottom of the league after six defeats on the trot, and have managed just six goals all season. Thankfully there’s more to it than that; the Latics have looked much improved in recent weeks, and will consider themselves very unlucky not to have picked up a result against Bolton or Newcastle.

Home ties against Fulham and Blackburn as well as a trip to Wolves in their next three should give then plenty of chances to pick up goals, and with the return to fitness of Hugo Rodallega they’ve finally got someone who can put the ball in the net.

With 11 attempts on target against Newcastle (that’s more than Man United, Chelsea, Tottenham or Arsenal last week) it seems incredible that they didn’t get more from that game. Although Rodallega didn’t get on the score sheet last week, he looked sharp in front of goal and gave Wigan an edge that they’ve been missing in recent games. Priced at just 6.0 and with an ownership of 1.9%, he could prove to a decent differential over the next few games.

I've watched Sunderland a few times this season and was terrified by their defence, particularly v Norwich. Not a team in gear and that also invites pressure. I rate NUFC's chance of CS higher than Sunderland's, ignore the price tags.

    vorm (krul)
    brown/kompany/wilkinson (warnock/de laet)
    nani/silva/vdv/cabaye (dyer)
    rooney/sturridge/suarez

tossing up over dyer vs cabaybe (got no transfers left). feel like it's pretty much a coin flip; cabaye prob a better player and in a better team, but swansea at home to bolton.. shrug.

    Vorm (Krul)
Bad K Bos Enrique (Simpson Naylor)

I think aguero plays at least 70 and is more than capable of hitting double figures. You need roo/rvp to offset this, I think they might.

This is the trouble with the doubling thing. If one's other defenders have even half-decent fixtures, one tends not to want to risk the double.

Having said that, I doubled on Newc last week successfully (thanks to Bad K having an 'awful' fixture)

silva probably 80% likely to get you 6-9 points, unlikely to hit double figures (think last week was an anomaly). adebayor could as easily score a hat-trick as get nothing.

Stay away from Saha, not anywhere near reliable enough and much better options in that price range. Bendtner isn't a bad shout. Sturridge an even better one.

I wouldn't have both Lamps and Gerrard, too much coin tied up in two players. Pick one and ditch the other for Silva ASAP.

    Begovic (Vorm)
    Walker Kompany Shawx (Barnett) (Simpson)
VDV (c) Silva (vc) Milner Pilkington (Ramsey)
    Rooney Sturridge Ade

    0.4 in the bank

I was thinking Milner as a short term gamble then upgrade to Nani.
Alternative midfields are Cleverley (not guaranteed first team or points), Sess (burnt before), Walters (is treble Stoke too much) Allen
Alternative strikers are Balotelli from Adebayor to ease Spurs coverage and Milner to someone as mentioned?
Also I could get rid of Shawx for Wilkinson and generally cheapen the defence but less guaranteed starters long term.

    Please advise kind sirs

I like the gambling here. Pretty much all the alternatives you have considered are plausible too. Most of all yes downgrade Shawx for Wilko - 3 premium defenders is too much in the current attacking climate, 2 with 3 cheapies rotated is the way. The extra 1.1 (is it) give you wiggle room.

Formula the same , but many more active players than last year , probably because of this site being linked on fpl site. So prices move quicker
Maybe they need to increase threshold for rises to reflect increased activity

I thought there were arounf 2.5m players last season? Although they may be more active as you say.

I doubt ffs has much to do with it as I'm sure not enough people visit these forums to make much difference although a lot of those that do seem a little "jumpy".

Formula is different in one massive way actually - NTI targets (transfers in required to rise 0.1) stay the same for each rise now instead of doubling/tripling. So massive price changes are much easier in 1GW. I think they have introduced a limit of 0.3 rise per GW to control this.

Checked that, Dzeko rose 8.5 to 8.8 after 4 goal wonder match, so still 0.3. So yeah I think that's the cap cos I've seen no higher and VDV seems to have been stopped.

    few quick questions
1 is boswinga gunna play ( i know hes not suspended)
    is P.Jones going to play?
    is Balotelli going to start?
is david Silva going to start?
who is a better pick Krul @ stoke or Vorm @ home vs Bolton?
    my team is currently
    Vorm
    Boswinga, Jones, Kompany, Jose Enrique
    Sinclair, Nani, Sliva
    Ade(VC) RVP, Balotelli (C)
    1st bench: B.Watson
    2nd: N.Dyer
    3rd: R.De Laet
with Krul as goal keeper back up
i am thinking that watson should be on this week

        thanks,
i feel like my bench is somewhat strong enough, once i turn de laet into ShawX or maybe even K.walker so i can rotate.
i have 2 mil in bank

      All guesswork, but I'd say:

      Yes
      Yes but maybe not start
      Yes with Aguero
Yes but may be rested if City go up big
      Vorm

Would play Dyer ahead of Jones or Enrique. Swansea are a different team at home.

It'll definitely be a unique pick - about as unique as you can get, given even those 3.4% that own him probably won't be captaining him!

As far as I can be certain..

      Bosingwa will play.
Jones may not because of Fletcher and defensive competition.
      Balotelli will play.
Silva will start but not necessarily play 90.
      Vorm.

The doubling thing is getting to me. I have N Taylor, but he's never been anywhere but on my bench, as when Swans are at home I play Vorm and feel scared to double. I have doubled on Newc this season, but it still frightens me. Better to spread risk?

Thing is this week the bookies have both Liverpool and Chelsea as more likely to keep a cleanie. Odd but makes me want to play Bos and Enrique, especially given greater attacking threat.

I don't see Chelsea keeping a cleanie but who knows? I'm playing Enrique though, (plus Vorm, Simpson & Naylor). Go with your gut instinct... I never do and always regret it lol. Spread the risk if you prefer.

Same here and I won't double up on Swansea defence either.

I think Naylor is good to have on your bench in case one of your starting defenders don't play though. Was considering doing Naylor to Wilkinson but figured getting Kompany in for Bosingwa was much more of a pressing need.

Naylor can keep McAuley company on the bench today.
