The concept of a player being fixture proof in Fantasy football is a much discussed topic around these parts. Wayne Rooney put forward a strong case a few gameweeks back, defying United’s tricky opening to the season with a points tally that left all but Sergio Aguero in his wake. Today, Robin Van Persie perhaps presented even stronger evidence that, when a player has talent and form, no opposition can stand in their way.

Van Persie is certainly a force of nature right now. Seven goals in his last three games have propelled him to the top of every Fantasy manager’s most wanted list. The Dutchman, along with Rooney and Aguero, have all enjoyed devastating spells of form this season. Any Fantasy manager who has failed to catch at least one of them, surely finds themselves floundering.

Ironically, it’s Wayne Rooney who has been hugely overshadowed by Van Persie’s recent returns. Today at Goodison, Rooney dropped alarmingly deep, as Alex Ferguson charged Danny Welback and Javier Hernandez to push on. In Fantasy terms, certainly as far as our own ICT Index is concerned, Rooney suffered his least effective 90 minutes of the season – the numbers are there – our Members can see for themselves.

Van Persie meanwhile, made a mockery of the fixture list which told us that a trip to Chelsea would pose him problems; that perhaps he couldn’t maintain his recent form at Stamford Bridge. Friday night’s decision to go with Van Persie over Sergio Aguero in the Scout Picks wasn’t taken lightly. We suspected that the Chelsea defence would be unable to keep the Dutchman at bay. Nobody could have predicted the havoc he would cause, the delicious end product he would deliver.

In three games, Van Persie has returned 36 Fantasy Premier League points – a tally that will surely increase with bonus points on Monday and perhaps the award of an assist for Theo Walcott’s goal. In contrast, Rooney has produced 5 points over the same three gameweeks. When you throw in the captaincy, that’s a big swing and painful reading for those who held Rooney with faith that his undoubted talent and early season form would see him through.

Conveniently, then, that takes us full circle. While Van Persie has done so much today to prove the theory that, with class and form, the opposition is irrelevant, Rooney’s recent returns present strong evidence of the contrary. The matches against Liverpool, City and Everton looked tough for Rooney- five points is certainly proof of that. Another twist in what is rapidly becoming a fascinating Fantasy season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    right

i brilliantly transferred bosingwa and ward out for kompany and wilkinson for a 4 pointer. sitting on 21 with vdv (c), cabaye and wilkinson to play, and -4 to come. fml.

i've got nani and rooney, no arsenal cover at all. i'm thinking that rooney is probably a season keeper, so a 4 pointer with nani+suarez out, rvp+larsson (sess, ramsey) in is a huge kneejerk, but... i'm in desperate need of points.

thoughts? (i have enough funds to hold off on doing this until the end of the week, so i'm not in a huge rush).

I've spotted a pattern....stop taking hits. If you have nani and rooney keep them...have you seen their fixtures? Focus on players that you can improve. Taking Suarez out before an easy home game is not sensible.

A better way of getting advice is post your whole team. That way with it all laid out it may be easier for you and us to spot a weak link.

also 4 pt hits involving defenders almost never work out. Your 4 pt this week was an error and I say that without hindsight...there's almost no way that would ever work out well for you.

maybe the answer is to keep Dzeko all season and accept that some weeks he'll get 1-2 and some weeks he'll score a brace....now that's an idea I hadn't considered. hmmmm.

the PPI weighting on shots off target is too harsh. Hope they alter it for next year. Two assists and a few shots on target, plus key passes in the final third may get him 1pt if he's lucky.

Its a pretty poor system. I consider lots of shots on goal, two assists and being key to all attacking play worth much more.

I don't fancy Drenthe's chances away at Newcastle too so I guess I'm waiting a week.
Petrov at home to Stoke surely a farewell assist/goal for me? 🙂

haha, good point...i didn't realized that he play away to NEW until I hit the "confirm transfer" button. Anyway, Petrov seems too unpredictive to me...in fact the whole Villa midfield is so mixed up I can't really decide one to gamble on: Bannan, Petrov, Albrighton....and maybe not so...N'zog

Im getting Drenthe, but only because I know I'll have the transfer to take him out again if it goes t*ts up. If your transfers for the next few weeks are looking like they'll be occupied, then you should get someone more reliable who you can play even if it looks like it's not going well for them, someone with set piece coverage for example.

The obvious one that gets him this week without a hit would require you to change your name, so that's probably not on huh? Otherwise you're going to have to downgrade a midfielder and then upgrade Adebayor or Agbonlahor. I think VDV & Silva shouldn't even be thought of as downgrade options, so that leaves Nani - how about swapping him for Walters? You'd then have enough cash to swap Adebayor to RVP, either this week for a hit, or next week for free. Leaves you with VDV and Rooney for Spurs and United cover too.

Oh I mean get Sunderland coverage for AFTER Man Utd game. VERY tasty fixtures. Him or Sessegnon if you can fit him in but wait to see if Gerrard is out for long.

TBH I'd rather have Adam (and someone else for Lampard like a Man Utd winger)

I'd get Ward out too asap when you have a freebie.
