With Matchday Four of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game kicking off in just a few hours, we’ve updated the European Watchlist for your convenience. Here follows our shining lights for the next two evenings …

Marseille have turned a corner domestically since moving to a 4-4-2 formation but whispers from abroad hint that Didier Deschamps may revert to the 4-5-1 that has seen them struggle, immediately increasing Wojcech Szczesney‘s potential for a clean sheet.

At 5.0, Anders Lindegaard could prove a risky alternative but he’s played two out of three Champions League ties to date and with United at home to Otelul, could be worth a punt.

When we think of Barcelona, thoughts inevitably turn to their tiki-taka brand of football that sets tongues wagging from here to Timbuktu. The goals keep rolling in, but with nine clean sheets in their last ten games they’ve been solid at the back. Eric Abidal looks a decent shout for the trip to Plzen.

Having averaged 6.7 points over the first three Matchdays, Jerome Boateng of Bayern Munich is a solid option. Priced at just 6.1, he’s as part of the strongest defence to be found amongst our Champions League outfits and with a home game against Napoli, could be in line for another clean sheet tomorrow evening.

With a home tie against Dinamo Zagreb on the horizon, the European Watchlist is bound for the Netherlands with our eyes on the back-line of Ajax. Either of Jan Vertonghen or Toby Alderweireld should be able to fill squads out there- priced at 5.1 and 5.0 respectively, the pair have a penchant for picking up a handy recovered ball bonus point or two as well.

When you have a budget of just 4.1 left to spend on your UCL squads you’re normally left looking amongst the lesser-known lights. Fortunately, Valencia have promoted from within and Victor Ruiz stands out as an easy option ahead of the Spaniard’s home tie with Bayer Leverkusen.

As has been the way to date, we highlighted Borussia Dortmund with a Scout Report last week so, inevitably, we’re going to throw at least one of their players into the mix. German starlet Mario Gotze is that man and with a must-win tie at home to Olympiakos, he’ll need to be on top of his game.

Given that he was on the bench at Everton on Saturday afternoon we’ll take a stab at Luis Nani having a greater than average chance of starting this Matchday and, subsequently, back him to the hilt to come good against Otelul.

It’s hard to deny we’ve picked up a little bit of an infatuation with Porto’s James Rodriguez over the first three Matchdays. With a crucial trip to APOEL on the cards, this forward -classified and priced as a cheap midfielder- more than warrants another shout out around these parts.

If you need someone relatively cheap then Christian Eriksen of Ajax at just 6.0 meets the criteria ahead of the Dutch side’s home clash with Dinamo Zagreb. That still too expensive? Kevin De Bruyne of Genk at 4.5 will want to impress at home to Chelsea, his potential suitors.

Rolling off what has been an incredible month (and year) of goalscoring exploits, Robin Van Persie picks himself – matters are only more pleasing considering the mere 9.0 it’ll set back European managers to invest.

Mario Gomez‘s record in the Bundesliga this last year is equally as frightening. With Napoli paying visit to the Allianz Arena, Bayern will be looking to show some of the home muscle that has seen them rack up 23 goals in five games in Germany’s top-flight this season.

We’ve already mentioned Valencia have a tie at home to Leverkusen this evening. We’re opting for Roberto Soldado, at 7.4, to score the goals needed to keep his side in with a chance of making it to the next stage.

If you need to scrimp and save on your budget then the 4.1 bargain basement price for Ailton of APOEL is hard to turn down. If the Cypriot champions can keep hold of top spot in their group this Matchday, we’d be willing to bet this man is going to be involved.

Please note that deadline for your UEFA Fantasy Champions League team selection will be at the earlier time of 17:45 CET today. This is due to ties kicking off in Russia (Zenit vs Shakhtar) and Belarus (BATE Borisov vs AC Milan) earlier than the six remaining scheduled fixtures today.

    I don't focus too much on my UCL team as much as I do my FPL team, mostly doing the CL for some fun, in any case would anyone make any stand out changes to this team? 🙂

    Vertonghen Luisao T.Silva
    Shaqiri Mata Nani J.Rodriguez

      Schurrle is a very bad punt:
      1) He is not a forward
      2) He plays against Valencia away
      3) Leverkusen look very average this year and they score few goals

    Think i'll resist using the wildcard and go for this short term plan. Main concern is no MAN coverage till GW13. Any ideas for which 4.5m defender to bring in GW12? And any thoughts on the plan? Cheers

    GW11: No transfer
    GW12: Given & Dunne -> Friedel & a 4.5m defender (current thinking is either N Taylor/Olsson/Givet)
    GW13: Aguero -> Rooney

    Given, Ruddy
    Dunne, Simpson, Brown, Wilkinson, Woodgate
    Silva, VDV, Sinclair, Ramsey, Moses
    RVP, Aguero, Adebayor
    Bank 0.4m

        Fair point. I guess my question should just be "Should I save the transfer this week? If not, what's the best move to make?"

          Much better 🙂

          It depends whether you want to WC or not, if you do then go crazy this week, if not then save the transfer as who knows what injuries may hit us during another bloody international break!

            That's really my dilemma. Wildcarding next week would protect against injuries during the international break and enable me to clear out the clag, but 2 issues swaying me away. 1) Can't see any worthwhile 1 week transfers this week - can you? 2) Reasonably happy with squad (i.e. wildcard not in desperate need, and saving could help for injuries down the line or DGWs). Would you plan to wildcard next week if you were me?

              If I were you I would save the transfer to be honest, it's a good team, but if you fancy a change around then WC. You don't need to though, the sensible thing would be to turn off your PC/Mac/Laptop/3G/Wifi and just leave it in my opinion haha.

          See below - Evans won't start every game, but at 1.5 cheaper than any of the alternatives could be worth the risk.

          First choice is probably

          Evra Vidic Jones Smalling

          but Rio, Evans, Fabio and Rafael (when fit) will get a look in too.

        Not a bad idea. If bringing Rooney in GW13 I'd need to get a keeper for 5m or less - best option to rotate with Ruddy (i.e. play most weeks)?

      Jones is likely to be in there as CB instead of Evans, or RB instead of Smalling. I think Smalling, Jones and Evans will be rotated around the CB / RB spot.

          Fergie has a penchant for the average utility player though doesn't he. Phil Nevile, O'Shea and now Evans. For most of his career I'd have placed Fletcher in that category too.

      4/10.

      3 poor midfielders, a poor striker and a rotation risk striker.

      Ditch Hart and Bosingwa and upgrade Ferguson, Henry and Doyle. Something Like:

      Krul, Wilkinson, Allen, VDV and Sturridge/Adebayor

      I want to remove any one of them but it seems everyone has a scoring chance

      Ronney, if his form is good

      Doyle, against Wigan (kinda weak team)

      Dzeko if he is played will surely score against QPR

      Van Persie will also surely score against West Brom

      P.S. Wigan is kind of a weak team no? Well weaker than wolves ....

    Can i run by my plan with you guys to get 2nd opinions please...my team:

    Given (Vorm)
    Enrique STaylor Brown(!) (Kompany DeLaet)
    Silva VDV Petrov Cabaye (Dyer)
    RVP Suarez Adebayor
    0.8 in bank.

    I'm thinking to save my transfer this week and then the following week do a triple transfer:

    DeLaet --> Baines
    Cabaye --> Drenthe
    Suarez --> Bendtner
    4pt. hit

    I would need the DGW to be confirmed by then to follow through with these transfers obviously. In the meantime i'm really not happy with playing Brown this week, and more recently, Petrov. What do you reckon i should do?

      Brown's got decent fixtures apart from Utd this week - unless you want to deal with de Laet now, I'd just grin and bear the 0 or 1 from him this week. Petrov has a decent fixture this week.

      I think Baines is very overpriced, especially as Drenthe could take some set pieces from him, but he could be worth it for the double gameweek. Another issue with him is that he unbalances your team - if you decide to sell him, you're either stuck with 2m or 3m in the bank for a week or have to make a double transfer.

        cheers 1966. The proposed transfers leaves me with 0.1 in the bank..I agree Baines is overpriced but is a must for the DGW imo. Penalties, free-kicks. I don't think he will stay too long in my team, but i hope to catch a nice haul or two from him.
