Man United’s build up to their Champions League clash with Otelul Galati tomorrow evening has produced some revealing comments regarding the future of Rio Ferdinand, with some significance to Fantasy managers.

Ahead of tomorrow’s Old Trafford tie, Sir Alex Ferguson, speaking at a press conference, has indicated that, with Nemanja Vidic his number one choice at centre-back, Ferdinand is now left to battle it out with Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling for a slot alongside the Serb.

No longer, it seems, is Ferdinand a guaranteed start for the champions, with his manager stating that the thirty-three year old will now have to modify his game as age catches up with him.

I explained to Rio the other day simply this – we have two young centre-backs coming through and I’m happy to have four and hope I can keep four of them happy for a long time. Rio’s almost 33 and has obviously lost the yard of pace he had five years ago but that doesn’t mean to say he can’t tailor his game into a different game where he doesn’t rely on pace. I did that myself when I lost some sharpness so I tailored my game differently. Rio will do the same and he’ll be fine. He’s still one of the best footballers in the country in terms of his use of the ball. He has a great presence and can still tackle and head the ball.

Ferdinand has taken part in six of United’s league games so far but with Vidic only now returning to fitness following a calf injury, they’ve shown little resilience at the back this season. Vidic’s two games in the past week, however, have seen United record clean sheets, though Ferdinand – perhaps after his display against Man City in the 6-1 mauling – played no part. Jones was preferred for the Carling Cup trip to Aldershot and Evans retained his start at Goodison.

With Vidic suspended tomorrow evening, Ferdinand looks odds-on to return to the heart of the back-four, though whether he’ll keep his place against Sunderland this weekend is perhaps unlikely. An unchanged defence from the Everton game looks to be on the cards.

Long-term, though, Ferdinand’s appearances will perhaps continue to be limited. The adaptability of both Smalling and Jones may work in Ferdinand’s favour to a certain extent, with either player also capable of filling in at right-back. Jones is also able to slot into defensive central midfield, leaving Evans as the only out-and-out centre half of Ferguson’s three younger options.

Smalling’s recent foot injury will sideline him for a month and as of yet this season, Ferguson has not had a full quota of defenders to choose from. With Rafael also now available to return at right-back, Ferdinand could find himself a peripheral figure as his manager looks to re-invigorate the United back-line, with the shockwaves from the City defeat still reverberating around Old Trafford.

For Fantasy managers, Evans is by far the most intriguing option given his rather modest pricing across the Fantasy games. The Irishman has started eight of United’s ten league games so far this season and, at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, has to be considered as a short-term option at the very least.

The return of Vidic was expected to dent Evans’s prospects but the start at Goodison, following his red card against City, was a surprise. Ferdinand was left to look on from the sidelines in that game and will likely find himself in that position again this weekend.

With improved fixtures on the horizon and with the possibility that Ferguson will look to discover a more miserly approach following the City thrashing, Fantasy managers will be keen to examine the options in the United back four. Today’s comments have shed more light on the situation and offered further indication that Evans will remain in the mix.

We’ve seen that Ferguson is more than willing to show faith in Evans and, in the past, the United boss has looked to establish a settled partnership in the league. If Evans can maintain a decent level of performance and United can embark on a run of improved defensive displays, there’s even the possibility that he could perhaps make the position alongside Vidic his own.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Disagree. he's one of the better defensive mids in the league. Gives them a strong tackler (if sometimes dirty) and someone who can play the technical side of their game

What is the thinking on Adebayor now?? ... is he done, or do we keep coz of good fixtures and VDV being too expensive.??

Personally I would only want 1 of VDV or Adebayor. And seeing as Adebayor takes up a valuable striker spot, I wouldn't have him.

Tis down to personal choice though, because there's no doubting Adebayor can do a job.

I've got Sturridge at the moment, but there are plenty of decent options like Ba. I wouldn't be surprised if Ba outscores Ade over the season.

He was never going to score every week but I think he will be very good over the course of the season. VDV is in super form, and the Parker-Modric midfield combo is running games at the moment. Walker also offers a great threat and Bale is Bale. Given the players he has around him and the fixtures coming up, I think you should stick with him.

Lads I am down with my nerves ... this gw 44 pts (1 below average):
I hate not having RvP every week I was prayin that he will wait with his hits and every week he is confirming he should have been in my team much earlier ... so I want somehow to get him in my team - next week i do WC btw...
have just 1 free transfer so I have to do -4t hit:
    my boys atm are:

    Given Bego
    Saylor Bosi Kompany Jagielka Hughes
    VdV Silva Anderson Brunt Ramsey
    Ade Suarez Sturidge

    0.2 in tha bank

    my thoughts are:

    A
    OUT:Stu & Silva(ouch!)
IN: RvP & 4.5 bench mid

    or
    B
    OUT: Ade & Silva(ouch again!)
IN RvP & 6.3 mid (Best maybe?)

    or
    C
no -4pt hit and hope RvP will never miss the neither the ball nor the goal vs WBA (utopia)

    anyone brave to help?

      C.

i'm in the same boat. i'd like RvP but i'd have to move Rooney out to do it.

or i could downgrade 2 x midfield and do Suarez > RvP for an -8 hit.

i have confidence in my team and i'm playing what i have.

Will you lose a lot of money on Silva? I'd think you'd want him back in after your WC, so I'd be reluctant to lose that cash just to have RVP 1 week early.

Waiting and using the WC may be the best bet. I think you can find the funds by downgrading a DF or two and Anderson to cheapies, then reassess what your options are.

I think the negative side of torres is ticking in people's minds too much, overriding what he has improved on and is simply a better player getting form back. i dont think he would have missed the penalty, but then again its probably better he didn't take it thinking about it, as i'd rather have him gaining confidence back scoring from open play.

Still glad i have him in my team though and so feel positive about his blackburn game coming up, his assist to ramires for the goal tonight was great 🙂

Suarez just isn't a good fantasy prospect. no one in Liverpool's attack is except maybe Fat Charlie. Get rid.

Yeah those 8 points he got last week are terrible....I agree he is very frustrating and is very wasteful but he is still picking up points. One more week for Suarez owners then you can get rid, he could easily score as many as RVP this week.

I don't have enough in the bank to do a 4 pointer as I don't want to get rid of Silva or Mata. I'd have to do an 8 pointer if I want to get rid of Ade and bring RVP in. I know Suarez will bring me points, I'm also sure The Van will contribute more in the long run as long as he's healthy so I think I'll do it tonight.
