It’s something of an understatement to suggest Leighton Baines has failed to live up to expectation this term. The top-scoring defender in last season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with a total of 178 points, Everton’s left-back started this season priced at 8.0 but so far has returned just 27 points from ten appearances, an average of 2.7 per game compared to 4.7 last time round.

His lack of any real returns has been a strange one- reason would suggest the departure of Mikel Arteta would only have increased Baines’ returns, given that he’s number one for set-pieces and spot-kicks, but the emergence of on-loan Royston Drenthe has currently put him firmly in the shade.

As a result, he’s dropped in ownership, down to just 6% but with David Moyes’ side encountering a strong run of upcoming fixtures, you’d think that if ever he was about to realise his potential, now is the time.

Using our own ICT Index and Opta stats available to members, we analyse his displays so far to ascertain just where, if at all, Baines has under performed.

Why hasn't Clichy played at all for France this week? Getting worried that he may get the start at home Newcastle, despite having Napoli away on the following Tuesday, because he hasn't played any football in the past two weeks.

Although at least Kolarov was seemingly suspended for Serbia's game in Honduras last night. There is hope still.

I refuse to give you solace.
I think you just signed Kolarov for potential outrageous tekkers.
      It ain't gonna happen.

Mancini loves to rotate his squad around the CL ties though. He's repeatedly spoken about how his players can't play twice in 3/4 days, so the Newcastle game seems perfect for Kolarov to get the nod, ready for Clichy to play in Napoli.

Admittedly my logic [when buying Kolarov] was that Clichy would play for France in Evra's absence, and that hasn't panned out, but I still have hope.

When he plays, he's the best FPL option in the league. It's just all about accurately predicting when he actually will play.

He's the defender with the most potential attacking returns, as well as the most potential defensive returns. Simples.

Starting with the QPR game, I think he'll start 3 out of the next 4 in the league though... Been right about one so far, and if I'm right about the next two - Newcastle and Norwich at home, then he could be in line for some serious points.

Anyway, he's already paid for the 4 point hit to get him in for Kompany.

Okay so two transfers I want are:

            Ward --> Jones
            Petrov --> Walters

To do this I must either do:

            Rooney --> Hernandez

            OR

            Dempsey --> Sessegnon

No lectures about points hits please, just: which would you do?

I would take Out Dempsey, I think he is doing well but still a bit overpriced for my likeing. You should look at other options for mids to bring in IMO, at least Walters has only 2 good fixtures left and may move back into the midfield.

                  Ideas instead of Walters then?

Dempsey has a tough run after this gameweek, just think he has it in him to hit a brace against Sundland. How he didn't score against Sp*rs is a Friedel-shaped miracle. By the stats (chances/chances created) he's the most dangerous midfielder in the Prem. And Rooney might still be in mid.

                  But, yes, Rooney is Rooney.

                  Tough call.

Disagree. Like Dempsey. He's consistently great. Never caught huge ownership year but he was the best/most consistent midfielder this side of Nani last year and has been justifying his price so far this year.

I think Rooney will move up- as Fergie stated the midfield move was only temporary. Now united also have some fit midfielders to choose from, also Wellbeck could be injured. And the Ref for the United game should be Mike( I like to give penalties) Dean. Ideas instead of Walters are Drenthe, Brunt or Ramsay, all have better long term fixtures. Walters has a good run for the next 2 so you could just take him and Switch later for one of these.

What about petrov> Eagles? Still doesn't free up hardly any cash though...I'd leave your team as is. But if you want to tinker with it, I'd drop Demps to Sess. Sess has good fixtures coming up while Fulham are Fulham...love Dempsey though.

Hiya guys, i know i've asked this before, but.....Jones or Kompany? that is the question.
(Have 6.2 exactly to splash out on a defender)

Jones: worrying as he's played 2 full games for england, but has great fixtures, and maybe a rotation threat?
Kompany: great and nailed on, but has the much more tougher fixtures. i just cant decide!

Or, can any other defender be suggested? im getting rid of de laet for this 'new' defender, and rest of my defence is Enrique, Simpson, BAE & N.Taylor.

Help would be so much appreciated, thanks.

Cheers lads, been a great help. i think i'm gonna go for Jones then, i think the talk of him being a 'slight' rotation was throwing me off a little, however i'm prepared to go with it as he's fast, pacey, and offers a lot more attacking potential.

Even if he does get rotated there's a strong chance that he'll be subbed after 60 mins anyway, grabbing the 6 points earlier if a clean sheet is held to that point.

Jones it is, off i go to click that confirm button, thanks again!

Jones all the way Mark. I think he is worth it and see him still playing for ManU because SAF probably likes his stable back 4 at the moment. Jones will have an easier role in the united strip, SAF is gonna use him, and with his fixtures and form it is stupid to ignore him.

Y'alright mate, yeah thanks, it makes sense doesn't it with Jones, even with Rio at fergie's disposal he can't ignore what Jones can produce, i was daft to get rid of him in the first place when i had him a bit ago but had to at the time, be good to have him back.

Oh and i've put Westwood in as well to replace Given, was so close to putting Vorm in but i think Westwood is a fantastic keeper with great fixtures on the horizon.

Haha ye was was really stupid to get rid of him too, im giving it another match and i might get him back in! Think he is gonna be raking in the points, and will be a little differential for everyone.

Thats an alright choice with Westwood but it just means at some point you will have to sort out ur keepers again... where that transfer could be used elsewhere at that point. But He has got gd fixtures and should get you some points just gotta hope the sunderland defence holds up.

How many points do you think i will get this week? 😉 ha. Jk.

Ha i know, should of kept him, but good to have him back now. Yeah hoping he rakes em in over next few fixtures, if it doesn't happen there's always the switch to kompany when fixtures become easier, but will keep Jones up until Jan WC i reckon.

Yeah i realised that when putting Westwood in, but more than prepared to considering his skill as a keeper and good fixtures, like you say though i hope that defence holds, sunderland have been playing well recently.

haha! no points predictions! ha. Nice grav by the way man, ahhh the good old days of sooty.

Yea, i need to get him in at some point will be considering some transfers over the next couple of weeks, but i took a hit to get RVP in this week just because you know... he is needed.

I'm so close to being top of my league as well, need to do well this weekend and crush the leader. Need to put him in his place!

We will have to see about Westwood tho for sure. Im going with Vorm this week, can see a penalty save due to the fact united are gonna be all over them. Especially with Rooney expecting to be back up front with more midfielders back.

Haha ye mate thought i would go back to the old times. Thought why not.

yeah, has to be done doesn't it, nobody will be able to put RVP's fire out until he himself gets injured, the guy is just a must at this moment in time, he's served me well this past month and to be honest i think things are only just warming up, tip load of points to come.

haha yeh im hoping to do well this week, i could be pushing for 3rd spot if all goes well, be a great turn around since i was trailing in 7th spot a few weeks back, tied 5th atm.
Yeah it's possible for a vorm pen save, he'll rack up save points regardless, and Rooney should be back up front, its nail-biting for people who haven't got him now (me).

haha! sooty, think i've still got my hand puppet in my loft of him from when iwas about 5! haha! ive gone for the selfish grav this time and put me in it, why not lol, dont think you know im in a band, it's fizzling now though, gigs have stopped and time to call it a day i reckon.

Wooo points for me by the sounds of it, especially seeing tho the guy ahead of me has RVP and captains him, the only reason why he is first is because of that. Hopefully with RVP and my better overall team will see me going up to where i belong.

Can see your team doing pretty awesome this week buddy, wont say the points i think tho haha 😉 If he does quite well this week, i'm gonna be getting him in somehow especially if Nani doesnt perform, might downgrade him to upgrade to Rooney.

Oh thats a shame, i thought ur grav was a famous singer... it looks like it mate ;). You never know might happen again for you! Anyways mate im off to bed. Cya dude! Talk to you later this week.

P.s. Cant WAIT for the return of football this weekend.

Yeah good thoughts surrounding jones if he does start performing well.

Haha! it was a great photographer we had at out gig in town one night, she cost a bomb but the pictures were awesome, she used to be ian browns gig photographer back in the day, or so she says. Yeah, all i can do is hope to join another band or something.

Mate internationals has been hell! bring on the weekend! canny wait!

I am certainly tempted, but most likely bringing him in the next GW against Wigan. He scored for Denmark again. Aguero will be sold for the mighty Bendy bus. I don't know why but I trust Bendther this year. I could hold on him for longer period.

nah, just look at the comments above debating whether i should get him in or not, he's sure to play he can take it i reckon, and utd will need him against a strong in form swansea on their turf as well.

Yeah its just my gut feeling anyway, I think its the most important CL game so far, United need to win this to finish top. So I see Ferdinand and Jones being rested. With Evans and Fabio/Rafael at RB, but at the same time Jones could be rested for the CL game, Fergie seems to like the little Brazilians playing in CL.

Hmmm i see your point, its a risk yes, but even if he does get rested, i can see it from a substitution perspective instead of just not starting, he can always come off at 60 mins against swansea if the game is looking tied up and won. It's important we keep clean sheets flowing, and Jones is integral to that, i will be mad at fergie if he does get rested lol.

End of the day it is 50:50, but my instinct is that he'll play, his attacking threat is worth the risk alone i reckon mate.

I dont know why I pointed this out anyway, Jones is the best option in their defense. I just own Evans and have taken a hit already, so im getting hopeful dreams 😀

haha its no biggy, i hope he plays and he should. i have a feeling Evans may very well play in defence also this weekend, or some part of it at least.

If he starts to perform well you could always opt for Jones further down the line, the fixtures are easier, and long enough to bring him in and still get in on his points. Good luck anyway matey :-).

Silva, Mata, Rooney, Aguero, or Klasnic.. Who gets the armband?

Leaning towards Klasnic as he was consistent prior to the red, West Brom aren't very good, and he's got something to prove.

Silva will get rested, same fear for Mata (not actually sure how much he played over the break?)

Rooney has been out of position, and may not be on form.

Aguero hasn't done much, and New Castle are no slouches..

For me it was Klasnic > Rooney > Aguero, but open to some thoughts? I feel silly captaining Klasnic

Rooney I think he edges it from Aguero just because the ref is Mike Dean for the Swans game and he likes his penalties.

Can see Rooney being up front (due to the return of midfield players), getting his scoring boots back on and destroying Swansea. Would go for him.

Newcastle have Cabaye and Tiote coming back though, and they didn't see too much international duty. I still like MCI to win, but will Aguero play a big enough role?

Well, it's not an obvious choice, but the best out of your options imo..Rooney could be back up front, but still don't see him ripping it up at Swansea

Rooney hasn't played any internationals, so will either be fresh or be rusty...I reckon he'll score.

Rooney(C), Aguero(VC). Klasnic at WBA is just reckless personally, could be genius, but very risky to say the least.

Well QPR scored against City by overpowering them in the air, I dont think that they will be able to do that against Shawcross and Woodgate/Upson/Huth. At least I hope so :d since im doubling up on Stoke since I have to bench Enrique and Simpson.

None of us are saying we are world class. We have only lost once in the last 20 competitive matches. We have only conceded twice in the last 11 matches.
We only drew tonight after understandably taking the foot off the gas after a 4-0 away victory.
We not only beat Estonia...we drew away in Russia and in Slovakia.
We were seeded 3rd in our group and exceeded expectations....with a population of 4 million.
We are not as bad as England fans....the vast majority of whom read the ugly Red Top rags.

Might have already been mentioned before but anyone else who has VP not captaining him this week? I absolutely hate having a captain playing away in the early kick off.

                The other candidates are:
Silva - Limited time and Newcastle is pretty solid
                VDV - Injury concern
Ade - Poor form and hasnt scored the last few games

Or should I do the unthinkable and captain Bendy the talent bus? 😯

I'm the same. It makes no sense whatsoever, I just like having my captain playing later rather than early. Gives you something to look forward to, especially if you haven't done so well in the earlier kick offs.

I may draft in either Hernandez or Aguero and give them the armband.

I think it's because watching your ranking drop on Sunday/Monday night after the initial euphoria of the Saturday captain is rather depressing.

Saying that it's RVP all the way for me this week. We managed to cut Norwich open plenty of times so Van Persie and co should be good for 3 or 4 on Saturday i reckon.

Bonjour, anything right/wrong with this weeks team? I've enough to ditch Hernandez after this game week 12 and bring in Lampard for the 5 man min, no point in taking the 4 pt hit for it this week.

              Vorm
              Jones Enrique Lescott
              Drenthe VDV Pilks Ramsey
              Aguero RVP Hernandez

RVP's been my captain for the last 3 weeks 🙂 I'd be mad to drop him, as for Hernandez I'm giving
him this week as i reckon i could get a lot more in the run with Lamps and even if he goes an inconsistant run the coins their for basically anyone i want, thanks for the reply I'll see what this weekend brings, got Rams and RVP against Pilks & Hernandez against Vorm, dropped Vorm last week against the reds and I'd rather him play at home against the mancs than Ruddy against RVP.

Ideally i could do with Hernandez scoring a hatrick against my keeper and my keeper saving a pen against Rooney XD ohhh if Carlsberg........ well it is Fantasy footy lol.

Yeah man RVP all he way, im defo capping him this weekend anyway.

Yeah i see your point with Hernandez and in comparison t lamps, i was gonna get lamps in if VDV was injured and not playing on monday, so lamps is a wise move i'd say, and like ya say the £ is there basically for anyone as a replacement.

I have ransey as well with RVP, ramsey needs to start showing his worth, and this run of fixtures will allow him to do that, he'll do well against norwich, they both will.

Yeah id defo play vorm against man u than rudders against arsenal, good move. Ive brought in westwood personally this GW, feel he'll do well.

Right im off man, no probs for the reply, good luck to ya matey 🙂

Good article as usual Sir Paulos, however statistics vary on the data input. I noticed in the comparison of Baines to Drenthe the number of games is used. How, I wonder, do the statistics stack up if game time is used Baines ( 900 Mins) Drenthe ( 312 mins ) Baines 1 goal no assists, Drenthe 2 goals, 4 assists. With Drenthe obviously getting used to a new team, league style and country. His last two and only ninety minute games, have produced 1 goal, 3 assists and 20 points. I let you decide who you think offers better FF potential.

              My team:

              Vorm (Krul)
              Kompany Evans Wilkinson (Bosingwa, Simpson)
              Ramsey Nani VDV Silva (N.Dyer)
              Sturridge RVP(c) Adebayor

              Thoughts>?
I'm a tad unsure on who i should play in defense, any trade ideas people?

I would look to get rid of Bosingwa, can't see Simpson doing well over the next 3 either plus Evans might not play? - Hibbet might be worth a punt? for cheap Everton coverage, lots on here are looking at Sunderland defenders too.

Currently on a WC is Junior Hoilett worth a 1 week punt (then switch him to Bentner with my free transfer next gw?) - or should I just get Bentner in now and be done with it?

May as well get him now if you're going to get him. Never know when you might be forced to use your transfer elsewhere. Decent fixture too.

I actually like this. My reply is basically more of a 'safe' boring option, whereas this option is more fun and could pay off. Depends whether you care about playing the game in a boring way or not. Although I'm sure whichever option you choose will end up being the wrong option, that's the way this game works sometimes, at least it does for me. 😀

Guys on my WC and would love some help just on the final middie position. Pretty happy at the moment with the rest of my team. Team is currently:

              Vorm Westwood

              Jones Simpson Kompany Gabbidon Wilkinson

              Silva Drenthe VDV Ramsey Dyer

              RVP Rooney Bendtner

With 0.0 in the bank. Dyer is my only thought - am I better served by Allen, Bradley Johnson, or anyone else in that price range? Thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hard to find a REALLY cheap Mid, but how about you swap Ramsey and Dyer for two of Sessegnon/Rodwell/Drenthe/Eagles? I think the Sessegnon + Drenthe combination is the only one you can't afford.

Interesting thoughts... basically went with the idea though that as I have 3 forwards that I will always be playing that I will just be benching one of the middies. Already have Drenthe in the team, but thought Ramsery and Dyer (on the bench) is a better option then downgrading one of those middies to improve my bench middie if that makes sense...!

Yeh, I see what you mean. I think it just boils down to whether you rate your 4 main midfielders. I don't think I rate Ramsey as a fantasy player because there's so much competition for goals and assists in the Arsenal team, having said that, he has assisted 4 goals in his last 6 games.

If you wanna keep Ramsey, I say you should keep the team as it is right now. Looks good.

How dull. 2 weeks and all I can come up with is Given -> Westwood. Any better ideas for this lot?

2 free transfers, 0.4m in the bank

              Given,
              Woodgate, Brown, Wilkinson
              Silva, VDV, Ramsey, Moses
              RVP, Aguero, Adebayor

I agree with Epicfail's comment above - the team looks solid.

Given --> Westwood is a good tactical move. Given's fixtures aren't great and Westwood / Ruddy rotate very nicely (for a very cheap price) all the way through to the mid-season WC. Nothing wrong with that transfer at all.

I guess Moses and Dunne are the other players to look at in the coming weeks.
