[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

I never understood why a professional athlete can’t cope with playing more than one game of football in a week. I used to play for four hours every night then jog home. Down the park, jumpers for goalposts, isn’t it? Marvellous.

Talk of rest, rotation and jetlag has been rife this week; just when we get a side that looks capable of destroying our mini league rivals, along comes an International break and Champions League fixtures to mess with our heads. At least we can rely on some mid-table “differentials” to bypass all that nonsense…

Mauro Formica

We picked out Mauro Formica as a differential back in week one when he was still very much an unknown quantity, and despite an up and down start to the season for Blackburn, Mauro Formica has shown enough promise in recent weeks to bring him back into our thinking. Reveling in his role just behind Yakubu, Formica has been central to many of Blackburn’s attacking ploys, picking up a goal and an assist in his last three games.

At 5.0, Formica sits at the very bottom end of the market and looks a great alternative for that fifth midfielder slot, designed to free up funds. Fixtures look pretty appealing compared to alternatives like Victor Moses and Nathan Dyer. Indeed, two consecutive away trips won’t worry Rovers given that they’ve scored in every game on the road this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side enjoy a decent run of opponents, which could see Formica return further profits.

Gareth McAuley

At 4.0, defenders don’t come any cheaper than Gareth McAuley and with West Brom about to embark on a decent run of fixtures, he looks like outstanding value. He might not be the glamour signing you’ve been craving after two weeks without a fantasy football fix, but as a long term investment, he looks like a solid pick and a good differential considering his low ownership of just 0.9%.

Points wise, we expect to see a decent amount of clean sheets from Roy Hodgson’s side this season. They’ve managed three so far, which is already more than they had the whole of last season. McAuley has also suggested that he could come good with the odd goal and assist. A career average of a goal every 10 games is hardly Lionel Messi standards, but for a defender, that shows promise. A look over his EA PPI scores also suggests he should be in for a few extra bonus points to add to the three he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Fulham.

Jack Rodwell

After Royston Drenthe leapfrogged the differentials straight into the Scout Picks this week, we’re taking a look at his midfield partner Jack Rodwell as a potential alternative. At 0.7 cheaper, an almost guaranteed starter and probably Everton’s form player of the last few games, Rodwell is much more than a poor second choice. With the confidence gained from his International debut, we’re expecting a big performance from the young England star against Wolves.

Despite previously being talked up as a future centre-half, Rodwell has developed into a quality box to box midfielder, and looks a much improved fantasy prospect compared to last year. The departure of Mikel Arteta and return to fitness of Marouane Fellaini has allowed Rodwell a lot more freedom in the middle of the park, and two goals in three games are evidence of this new attacking threat. Our recent members ‘Talent’ article provides all the stats to back up our hunch this week, and with ownership of just 1.9%, Rodwell could well sneak under the radar to provide a solid differential return over Everton’s next three fixtures.

Going to play Evans and have Enrique come on if he doesn't play. I may even keep Sturridge next gw, good fixture.

Mata is always good for an assist.

If I may say so, I think it's silly paying 16.5 million for secondary Chelsea coverage when 12 could be spent on Lamps...

True, but CSs have been a nightmare this year. May as well go minimalistic at the back, Reeson-style. and focus on getting the heavy hitters/captaincy choices when the hit form. Everton have kept 1 CS in a game that they conceded two pens. Howard also costs 1.4 more than Ruddy. I hear what you're saying but I'm thinking in a purely financial sense.

I keep thinking he's the way to go, but then I look at other strikers (like Long) who have more points in less minutes, and cost less, thus freeing up cash to upgrade Tiote, unless Bradley Johnson or Nigel Re-Coker are adequate replacements as I refuse to pick the Holy One.

Were I going to get in Bendy (which I'm pretty sure I am) it would be for Sturridge rather than Suarez. Bucktooth is the sort of annoying FPL prospect who will do bugger all against the weaker teams when you have him as captain and explode against the best when you wouldn't even dream of captaining him.

That first line is spot on.
Take the top Tennis pros. 1-2 week tournaments, playing 1-4 hour games every other day, winning the whole damn thing and then jetting half the way around the world to do the same thing the next week and the next week etc. etc.
Oh - and a bit of training thrown in on the days off.

I know it's difficult to compare the sports (contact etc.) but 180 mins football in the space of 2 weeks??
    Poor footballers*.

*note that I tend to struggle to get through my 24 min game of 5s each week, but my point still holds.

Which is my point. 2 matches per week is almost blasphemy for the premier league football manager. He needs a squad of 25 players just to enable him to find 11 who aren't too tired.

..and that's for the bad tennis players.

I'm not a huge tennis fan - I just find the disparity a bit odd.

Footy is a team game and tennis is not. My assumption is that the footballer who's played two games in a week could easily play another 3 but his performance would be severely degraded. The tennis player does not have the luxury of a rest but is also trained specifically for this kind of activity interval. Clubs have the luxury of resting players simply because they can. They have other players who will have the 'edge' because they are rested.
It's really not a fair comparison. Apples and oranges.

What am I on about 🙂

    Ruddy Pilkington Naylor Simpson

I have two free transfers for next week after I have assessed the likes of Sturridge, further.

Thoughts always appreciated, particularly as people grow tired of all these RMTs.

You won't want to be getting rid of Sturridge next week (assuming he's fit and selected), Wolves roll up at the Bridge! Cheap Chelsea cover right there.

Team looks fine for this week

Not a lot wrong there. I can't see you needing to use your FT's next week.

Thanks fellow scouts. It's tough at the moment! Sturridge has two more games before we discuss his contract extension.

Don't mind if Nani is out. That's why the Pilkington investment is there.
