[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

I never understood why a professional athlete can’t cope with playing more than one game of football in a week. I used to play for four hours every night then jog home. Down the park, jumpers for goalposts, isn’t it? Marvellous.

Talk of rest, rotation and jetlag has been rife this week; just when we get a side that looks capable of destroying our mini league rivals, along comes an International break and Champions League fixtures to mess with our heads. At least we can rely on some mid-table “differentials” to bypass all that nonsense…

Mauro Formica

We picked out Mauro Formica as a differential back in week one when he was still very much an unknown quantity, and despite an up and down start to the season for Blackburn, Mauro Formica has shown enough promise in recent weeks to bring him back into our thinking. Reveling in his role just behind Yakubu, Formica has been central to many of Blackburn’s attacking ploys, picking up a goal and an assist in his last three games.

At 5.0, Formica sits at the very bottom end of the market and looks a great alternative for that fifth midfielder slot, designed to free up funds. Fixtures look pretty appealing compared to alternatives like Victor Moses and Nathan Dyer. Indeed, two consecutive away trips won’t worry Rovers given that they’ve scored in every game on the road this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side enjoy a decent run of opponents, which could see Formica return further profits.

Gareth McAuley

At 4.0, defenders don’t come any cheaper than Gareth McAuley and with West Brom about to embark on a decent run of fixtures, he looks like outstanding value. He might not be the glamour signing you’ve been craving after two weeks without a fantasy football fix, but as a long term investment, he looks like a solid pick and a good differential considering his low ownership of just 0.9%.

Points wise, we expect to see a decent amount of clean sheets from Roy Hodgson’s side this season. They’ve managed three so far, which is already more than they had the whole of last season. McAuley has also suggested that he could come good with the odd goal and assist. A career average of a goal every 10 games is hardly Lionel Messi standards, but for a defender, that shows promise. A look over his EA PPI scores also suggests he should be in for a few extra bonus points to add to the three he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Fulham.

Jack Rodwell

After Royston Drenthe leapfrogged the differentials straight into the Scout Picks this week, we’re taking a look at his midfield partner Jack Rodwell as a potential alternative. At 0.7 cheaper, an almost guaranteed starter and probably Everton’s form player of the last few games, Rodwell is much more than a poor second choice. With the confidence gained from his International debut, we’re expecting a big performance from the young England star against Wolves.

Despite previously being talked up as a future centre-half, Rodwell has developed into a quality box to box midfielder, and looks a much improved fantasy prospect compared to last year. The departure of Mikel Arteta and return to fitness of Marouane Fellaini has allowed Rodwell a lot more freedom in the middle of the park, and two goals in three games are evidence of this new attacking threat. Our recent members ‘Talent’ article provides all the stats to back up our hunch this week, and with ownership of just 1.9%, Rodwell could well sneak under the radar to provide a solid differential return over Everton’s next three fixtures.

Almost all Stoke fans think Wilko is nailed on at RB.

They reckon ShawX and Huth would be better options at CB, with Higgy/Wilson at LB.

Thanks, Stoke backline has been confusing with Wilson, dropping back in a reverse OOP. Then Woodgate actually playing.

I heard Huth wants to return to Germany- just that little bit--- he was so strong last year, quite a surprise this year, at least to me.

I would have shoehorned Lamps in if he wasn't on 4 yellows. If he gets one Sunday and misses vs. Wolves at home next week, I'd feel ripped off.

Lets hope the mid-table teams deliver. Certainly key players from mid-table teams have their moments in an FPL season, I hope these next few weeks are one of them.

I'll whisper it but I took a 4pt hit on these. Whispered because I've taken far too many already. I've promised myself I'll make max 2 hits til January break UNLESS the hits pay themselves off, in which case they won't be counted.

I think this week is crap for strikers and you might as well fill out your mid, where there are many excellent prospects. I'm torn between Drenthe and Eagles but in the end went for Eagles because BOL have shown they can score big while EVE... haven't. Eagles seems like their scoring mid.

I'm a fan of him, I'd take him over Drenthe. Depending on what happens this week, I may end up with both and some cash in the bank to play elsewhere.

A lot of people shy away from hits, the odd 4 pointer here and there is worth it though. I'd feel a bit silly doing that transfer, need patchwork elsewhere. Worst case scenario I have 5 or 6 who might not play.

I take it you mean Aguero, Sturridge, Nasri, VDV, Silva and De Laet? Aguero is nailed on to start as usual I'm pretty sure, Sturridge is Chelsea's top scoring FPL striker in a tough match and it's hardly like the alternatives are hot, Nasri is a risk, Silva always starts when fit and De Laet seems to never. So 2 doubts really. If you ship out Nasri you could get another really good mid.

Cheers for the encouragement people, I was very iffy about this lineup because I've had the whole 2 weeks to obsess about it. Balotelli is a very marginal choice, I may change him for Sturridge before tomorrow's deadline. But I think Balo can do far more in a short time than Sturridge - he will need more than 10 mins lol.

Can't go Balo > Ade as I'm already on a hit. And not sure about Ade's goalscoring.

I'm worried because I'm pretty sure Balo played two friendlies, one against Poland and one against Uruguay. Still they were friendlies, and Dzeko was rested last time (or maybe twice!) there was an international break. If Balo doesn't deliver this GW I'm really going to have to think about him

I'm thinking Ramsey will be dark horse for this week. Not much talk about him.

Would you consider to put R.Taylor for second sub? Just in the worse case that two of your starters did not play, would you intend to play two Swansea?

Ramsey was flavour of the month around here not so long ago. I'm in no way tempted to get rid of him, but can see why people aren't flocking around to get him in.

Yeah that was a deliberate choice to put N Taylor before R Taylor, not sure it's sanity haha! I believe in Swansea's home CS ability enough - against a quite a defensive United too - that I'm willing to risk N Taylor dropping in. But I think the risk is slight.

Ramsey is playing in a very advanced position and making great passes to set up players - see the last game for example. The technical passes are almost reminiscent of Fabregas, although I'll stop there! In open play I really fancy him to at least assist against Norwich if not score.

Honestly........they are all kinda static. Nothing urgent, no.

VDV, Nani, and Rooney are all in kinda limbo places, but I still want them for now.

Moses is a problem, but I need funds to get him out anyway.

        I like my defense fine.

I guess thats the other reason I want to save the transfer: I know I will want it more later.

That is, of course, unless I don't want sturridge anymore.

^ That still remains the question. Will (if so, when will) Roo move upfront? He's on my radar, but I'm considering downgrading Nani to fit in Roo. But...if you can keep both, who knows..might work!

Yeah, its definitely tricky having both: hence why two transfers might be nice for the near future. I am thinking about getting rid of one, but its really tricky right now in that I don't love a whole lot of the other options.

I think its coming to a boil soon though. No more internaitonals will be nice for data's sake.

                Best of luck to you.

Just mentioned the likely scores over the next 4 gwks at the current ppg.

Bendtner 5 ppg; Studge 4.6 ppg.

For me it's a win-win situation: definite starter with good fixtures/pens/5 ppg average.

Yeah, but it was good enough for my sensei.........it should be good enough for me.

And its not like I think Sturridge is going to deliver necessarily. I just dont like Bendy enough to go for it.

Although I'm dreading Christina on Monday morn, I was looking at Bendtner last weekend. RoysCallerAnne put me off him. However, my gut instinct is telling me that this is the right move and I'm comforted by the fact that SUN have good fix.

Now that I've made the trade, I've not had any doubts, so it was obviously one that I was naturally drawn to. 🙂

yeah, I have been 'drawn' to it as well even since sturridge dropped off. I just don't know if its the right time. I just can see bendy exploding tomorrow.

I'm just not sure if its smart considering how essential I think Ba will be in 3 weeks. Or maybe even two.

The other consideration is Rooney. Having 2/3 non-firing forwards is a costly business particulalry with the way boni are awarded this year. You've got your heart set on Ba by the sounds of it. Funnily, I was looking at him in preseason as my third forward. Good to see him scoring freely.

Yeah, I hate that Rooney isn't working out either, but I dont want aguero since his form is rocky right now ,and his fixtures are dreadful. That leaves very few replacements in that range. I'm not interested in Suarez(not that good), Dezko(rotation), or Hernandez(sideways move).

I think Ba will outscore everyone under 8 mil in the striker category. I just dont want him now considering fixtures. I, too, had him early on, but then he had a stretch where he wasnt in favor.

Considering so many choices for transferring Evans out during the break. I couldn't believe that I haven't done anything yet.. Also, missed a chance of +0.2 profit from Bale, Eagles, and Dzeko. I hope this team will give me decent points this week.

    Vorm
    Richards - Evans - Brown
    Nani - VDV - Silva - Mata
    Adebayor - Bendtner - RVP(c)
    Sub: Krul - N.Dyer - N.Taylor - Simpson

As you've missed the rises, I'd say ride it out and enjoy the freedom of 2 next week. You've got a full team, and Evans may play. Possibly move Simpson ahead of N.Taylor on the bench, Newcastle are much better defensively than Swansea, regardless of their home form so far.

I've been highly influenced by my miserable miss of Naylor's point from last week.. 🙁

Simpson ahead of Naylor sounds sensible for lowering risk, but I think Newcastle without Tiote may not be as good in defensive as when he was in the team. Getting Naylor in with CS point would also be good for me as Liverpool fan because it means United lose or draw.. 😛

If Evans did not play, it would be DF to get in despite Dyer as first sub which mean one of N.Taylor or Simpson will play. If VDV didn't play too, it's Dyer.

I may end up playing 3 Swansea players against United.. and get 2 CS from Vorm/Naylor and a very surprise goal from Dyer. 😆

Thanks for the input. I desperately need to catch up, so I'm taking a few risks with Drenthe (I confident in his chances) and Bendy (this I KNOW is a risk lol). I'm fine with Dzecko because he has more goals, same amount of assists, more shots than Aguero (who only has more mins and a lot more expensive)

I def see your points though, but I have to take some risks to gain some ground. Barca fan?

true. best of luck to you! yupp. howd you know? it's unfortunate though because I live in the states and so most liga games are on a different channel that I don't have so I only can only see their champions league games but most of those are while i'm at school due to the time difference and them being during the week. but it's such a treat when i do get to watch them play. i love their style and passing game. so much fun to watch

It was about 13/2 with Ladbrokes, nothing spectacular, but would have brought in a few drinking tokens. You wait till I see King (laughs out loud) Kenny. I give him a piece of my mind. Useless pile.

Mornin' Flynny - you're up early! Thinking about your transfers?

In the L5 Club we have 20 teams. There's room for 6 more. The league starts next week: 25 H2H games mostly involving, the Dead Zone crew.

Anyone else want to sign up, Dead Zoners? 😉

Jafa, guess you didn't notice my post some days back.

As a medical spy of the L5 club, it's my responsibility to bring to your attention that a certain Balakrishna Punuru has joined us. He is defo not worthy of a place in the L5-ers, as he is known to cos pain in the arse (L's end) / back to the people around him. Also has 4-5 teams in the same name, surely a hoax?

Everton is one of the team with most "failed to score" at home, but Wolves were also very poor on away game. But.. Wolves just turned to 4-5-1 and it looked really better.

      I'd say it's overkill.

    Decision time:

    Vorm
    Shawcross, Taylor (SWA), Brown
    VDV, Demsey, Nasri, Silva
    Agbonlahor, Adebayor, Kun

Subs: Dyer, SImpson, Taylor S, Given

    Taylor S for Assou-Ekotto
    or
Nasri for Walters (or another midfielder) and
Taylor S for Baines (or another defender and possibly bring in Assou-Ekotto next week)

Sinclair will deputize then, from the bench

I have a transfer, but am planning to keep it to use 2 in a few days

        planned to bring in include:
        Sturridge (for And. Johnson)
Wilkinson (for either Bosingwa or D. Simpson)--provided Wilkinson plays this week
        maybe Alex for Bosingwa
possibly someone for Petrov--any suggestions? at some point I might bring in O'Hara for M. Petrov, but fixtures are relatively tough
