[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

I never understood why a professional athlete can’t cope with playing more than one game of football in a week. I used to play for four hours every night then jog home. Down the park, jumpers for goalposts, isn’t it? Marvellous.

Talk of rest, rotation and jetlag has been rife this week; just when we get a side that looks capable of destroying our mini league rivals, along comes an International break and Champions League fixtures to mess with our heads. At least we can rely on some mid-table “differentials” to bypass all that nonsense…

Mauro Formica

We picked out Mauro Formica as a differential back in week one when he was still very much an unknown quantity, and despite an up and down start to the season for Blackburn, Mauro Formica has shown enough promise in recent weeks to bring him back into our thinking. Reveling in his role just behind Yakubu, Formica has been central to many of Blackburn’s attacking ploys, picking up a goal and an assist in his last three games.

At 5.0, Formica sits at the very bottom end of the market and looks a great alternative for that fifth midfielder slot, designed to free up funds. Fixtures look pretty appealing compared to alternatives like Victor Moses and Nathan Dyer. Indeed, two consecutive away trips won’t worry Rovers given that they’ve scored in every game on the road this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side enjoy a decent run of opponents, which could see Formica return further profits.

Gareth McAuley

At 4.0, defenders don’t come any cheaper than Gareth McAuley and with West Brom about to embark on a decent run of fixtures, he looks like outstanding value. He might not be the glamour signing you’ve been craving after two weeks without a fantasy football fix, but as a long term investment, he looks like a solid pick and a good differential considering his low ownership of just 0.9%.

Points wise, we expect to see a decent amount of clean sheets from Roy Hodgson’s side this season. They’ve managed three so far, which is already more than they had the whole of last season. McAuley has also suggested that he could come good with the odd goal and assist. A career average of a goal every 10 games is hardly Lionel Messi standards, but for a defender, that shows promise. A look over his EA PPI scores also suggests he should be in for a few extra bonus points to add to the three he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Fulham.

Jack Rodwell

After Royston Drenthe leapfrogged the differentials straight into the Scout Picks this week, we’re taking a look at his midfield partner Jack Rodwell as a potential alternative. At 0.7 cheaper, an almost guaranteed starter and probably Everton’s form player of the last few games, Rodwell is much more than a poor second choice. With the confidence gained from his International debut, we’re expecting a big performance from the young England star against Wolves.

Despite previously being talked up as a future centre-half, Rodwell has developed into a quality box to box midfielder, and looks a much improved fantasy prospect compared to last year. The departure of Mikel Arteta and return to fitness of Marouane Fellaini has allowed Rodwell a lot more freedom in the middle of the park, and two goals in three games are evidence of this new attacking threat. Our recent members ‘Talent’ article provides all the stats to back up our hunch this week, and with ownership of just 1.9%, Rodwell could well sneak under the radar to provide a solid differential return over Everton’s next three fixtures.

    Need your eyes thought this lot...

    Vorm (ruddy)
    Enrique, kompany, brown (Simpson, de leat)
    Nani, silva, Pilks, brunt (fergie)
    Ade, roonpig (vc), RVP (c)

    Have 1.3 in the bank with a FT I the bag.

    What would you do to sort this out?
    - waste a transfer and get de leat out for McCauley?
    - sort my fergie issue out by getting something the likes of Moses?
    - keep it to upgrade Pilks oe Ade next GW after seeing how they go this week?
    - any other advise

    Trying to decide between one of three options. I've included the next five opponents faced and I must use that defender in each of the first four games (although I might be willing to use Gabbidon in week 13 (nor)):

    1) Warnock to BAE (AVL, wba, BOL, sto, SUN)
    2) Warnock to Wes Brown (FUL, WIG, wol, BLA, tot)
    3) Warnock to McAuley (BOL, TOT, qpr, WIG, bla) and Mata to Silva for a 4 point hit.

    Can't get Silva in with options 1 or 2...

    Any suggestions?

    Ok, all this Vermaelen and Baines talk is too ridiculous for me to ginore.

    surely if you're cosndiering spending THAT much on ANY defender, Vidic is a better bet.

    Better fixtures than both, better team than both, and easily just as much of an offensive threat as both.

    Same price as Baines, and only .5 more than Verm, which, if you're crazy enough to pay so much for a defender, can't be THAT much more.

            Yep, the fixtures have certainly helped. What convinces me of Swansea long term is not Super Vorm or the fact their defence has coped with a load of injuries, but their possession principles. Maintain this and there should be plenty more cleanies on the horizon.

    Some advice required. Have not looked at Fantasy team over the break as had 2 transfers up my sleeve to cover any injuries but having looked at fixture list (and before viewing scout picks which I tend to ignore) I am 90% sure of doing;

    Warnock->Baines
    Suarez->Bendtner
    (+ extra £0.2m change back)

    Current team:
    Vorm Hennessy
    Brown Simpson Boyata(inj) Warnock Ass-ekoutu

        They have played 5 or the current top 6 in their last six games. It doesn't get much harder than that, i'm sure Everton's form will pick up and so will the clean sheets. Personally i still think Baines is a great shout, it'd LOVE to have him this week.

    Should I sign JWalters or Sessegnon?

    Already going to bring in Bendtner so only concern is it overkill to have 2 attacking Sunderland players?

    In their favour is a better run of fixtures when matching them with Stoke.

      Go Walters

      I am getting Bendtner next week also and I am now torn on Drenthe or Walters...No to Sess for me as I will have Bendtner next week.

      I'd bring in Walters; 2 Sunderland is slight overkill. I'd say generally only double up on attackers from the top six, and even then, only when they have form and fixtures.

    Superb Fast Show reference there Big Dunc, and then I saw you had it linked up n'all, I would of noticed but I was very very drunk.

    Formica might be a good one, wish I had the freebies to do some of these moves every week, for the most part, they seem to come off! Good job.

        Haha, cheers. That appears to be the consensus, and I'd feel bad dropping Ali following his unrewarded heroics last week. I'd say Rovers are pretty likely to score but here's hoping Blackburn miss two pens again!

    I am finding it terribly hard to get a United squad for tomorrows game, are the Guardian squads as reliable as there projected starters? If so, I need a point in the right direction. ( I have checked the team news here, but I would like some further comfort from somewhere else that we have some midfielders to play before I boldly captain Rooney!)

    Evening folks. Hope y'all enjoyed the international break?

    Quickie. Who to remove from my team - Bradley Johnson (NOR) or Nathan Dyer (SWA). I'm struggling to split their fixtures... any thoughts/preferences??

    As always, much appreciated...

      Johnson - Swansea are a better team and I reckon Norwich will start back into rotation again

      The Bendy Bus is, well, frankly, to be honest, not the most reliable form of transportation given that it's swedish-made engine is currently in disrepair.
