[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

I never understood why a professional athlete canโ€™t cope with playing more than one game of football in a week. I used to play for four hours every night then jog home. Down the park, jumpers for goalposts, isnโ€™t it? Marvellous.

Talk of rest, rotation and jetlag has been rife this week; just when we get a side that looks capable of destroying our mini league rivals, along comes an International break and Champions League fixtures to mess with our heads. At least we can rely on some mid-table โ€œdifferentialsโ€ to bypass all that nonsenseโ€ฆ

Mauro Formica

We picked out Mauro Formica as a differential back in week one when he was still very much an unknown quantity, and despite an up and down start to the season for Blackburn, Mauro Formica has shown enough promise in recent weeks to bring him back into our thinking. Reveling in his role just behind Yakubu, Formica has been central to many of Blackburnโ€™s attacking ploys, picking up a goal and an assist in his last three games.

At 5.0, Formica sits at the very bottom end of the market and looks a great alternative for that fifth midfielder slot, designed to free up funds. Fixtures look pretty appealing compared to alternatives like Victor Moses and Nathan Dyer. Indeed, two consecutive away trips wonโ€™t worry Rovers given that theyโ€™ve scored in every game on the road this season. After that, Steve Keanโ€™s side enjoy a decent run of opponents, which could see Formica return further profits.

Gareth McAuley

At 4.0, defenders donโ€™t come any cheaper than Gareth McAuley and with West Brom about to embark on a decent run of fixtures, he looks like outstanding value. He might not be the glamour signing youโ€™ve been craving after two weeks without a fantasy football fix, but as a long term investment, he looks like a solid pick and a good differential considering his low ownership of just 0.9%.

Points wise, we expect to see a decent amount of clean sheets from Roy Hodgsonโ€™s side this season. Theyโ€™ve managed three so far, which is already more than they had the whole of last season. McAuley has also suggested that he could come good with the odd goal and assist. A career average of a goal every 10 games is hardly Lionel Messi standards, but for a defender, that shows promise. A look over his EA PPI scores also suggests he should be in for a few extra bonus points to add to the three he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Fulham.

Jack Rodwell

After Royston Drenthe leapfrogged the differentials straight into the Scout Picks this week, weโ€™re taking a look at his midfield partner Jack Rodwell as a potential alternative. At 0.7 cheaper, an almost guaranteed starter and probably Evertonโ€™s form player of the last few games, Rodwell is much more than a poor second choice. With the confidence gained from his International debut, weโ€™re expecting a big performance from the young England star against Wolves.

Despite previously being talked up as a future centre-half, Rodwell has developed into a quality box to box midfielder, and looks a much improved fantasy prospect compared to last year. The departure of Mikel Arteta and return to fitness of Marouane Fellaini has allowed Rodwell a lot more freedom in the middle of the park, and two goals in three games are evidence of this new attacking threat. Our recent members โ€˜Talentโ€™ article provides all the stats to back up our hunch this week, and with ownership of just 1.9%, Rodwell could well sneak under the radar to provide a solid differential return over Evertonโ€™s next three fixtures.

Sorry, I know I posted this question on the last page, but I need more opinions before I head off on a mini-holiday.

    1) Bosingwa out for Wilkinson (rotation risk), Jones (might be rested this week) or Vermaelen (can Arsenal keep clean sheets)?

    2) Is it worth doing Dyer -> Drenthe for a 4 point hit? Or save the transfer for next week?

      1) any of those 3 are decent moves. I'd probably sway towards Wilkinson as he has 2 great fixtures and the funds may come in handy elsewhere.

      2) Are you playing Dyer this week? If so, it's a close one, but probably just a no from me.

        Thanks for your input.

        1) Price is not really an issue. After doing that transfer, I'd have 6.4m in the bank, and I've no idea where to spend those funds. Either way, is Wilkinson still the best option?

        2) Nope, I'm benching Dyer this week. To be honest, If I do get Drenthe in, I'd have to bench either Moses or Agbonlahor. :/

No probs. I think that makes 2) a definite no. Moses has a great fixture and is more than due, whereas Bongy has great form and plays a far from tight TOT defence. I'm starting Moses this week (see above) but Bongy may just be the better pick. Close call.

As for 1), lack of funds not being a problem is a nice position to be in. Depending on how many Ars/Mun players you already have, either of the other 2 are great picks. Not much between them imo (P Jones better chance of CS, Verm bigger goal threat and nailed on).

    Which to do?

    a) Transfer Dunne -> P Jones today before the price rise? If so, who to bench from the below to play him?
    b) Save the transfer for next week

    Westwood (FUL)
Brown (FUL), Woodgate (QPR), Wilkinson (QPR)
Silva (NEW), VDV (AVL), Ramsey (nor), Moses (BLA)
RVP (nor), Aguero (NEW), Adebayor (AVL)

Subs: Ruddy (ARS), Sinclair (MUN), Dunne (tot), Simpson (mcy)

Yeah it would be for free, but I can't see who to leave out...I have to play Moses at home to Blackburn this week - I wouldn't be able to look myself in the mirror in the morning if I benched him with that fixture and he ran riot.... P Jones' price will rise in the next 4-5 hours.

Swaying towards saving the transfer at the moment.

now most of them are doubts to play, would it be worth a 4 point hit to trade Bos out?

That's quite an expensive defence relative to some of the awful ones I've seen around here. Would play Vorm instead of Kenny, I'm not making any exceptions for United when it comes to Swansea's awesome defensive home form and he'll get save points even if he doesn't CS. Please don't play Moses. It's just been tragic watching people stick with him.

Wow, another vote for Vorm over Kenny? Just can't do it. I think Kenny can indeed get a cleanie.

Oh Moses is your 5th mid, like my Dyer. Maybe, yeah, he should be played in the sense of "this is the only time I'd play him". Still could find much better for just a tiny bit more money, or go Dyer/Allen.

Do you really trust the QPR defence at Stoke.

Get RVP, Rooney, Silva, VDV and then see who else you can get.

Looks decent. Personally i wouldn't go for Baines, i would spread the cost, getting Richards or Jones instead of Baines would allow you to get Eagles or Rodwell instead of Allen and have money left over. I would also get Rooney in now, no reason for it, it's just a hunch that he'll score well tomorrow.

Get some cheaper defensive everton coverage.
Upgrade defence and get some Manchester defensive coverage.
Mids and Forwards are solid, upgrade to Rooney sooner rather than later.

really looking forward to this gameweek with lots of possible swings and nervous line-ups waits, e.g:
which 2 or 1 of aguero, balotelli and dzeko will start?
    will rooney play up front?
will rooney be at all galvanised by the break?
who are the mystery 1 or 2 injured everton players? surely not drenthe? not baines, say it ain't so.
suarez has to start,...right? pulling him out the spotlight simply hints at guilt.
o'hara to stay in attacking mid?
    FFS cup qualification
    will VDV make it?
with wigan at home coming next will SUN v FUL be the real rebirth of the bendy bus
lampard to get a 5th yellow and miss the peachy home game with wolves next week? you could argue that's the best game to get it out the way.
vorm to be silly again? (good silly)

Looks decent overall - not sure about Howard - I think a Vorm/Ruddy combo is plausible and that could allow a little extra investment in that defence.

Bendtner could easily work well - I am probably going to stick with Suarez myself and save the transfer for next week.

Grand. But Westwood & Jagielka is cheaper and probably stronger than Howard & Brown.

Then maybe get Naylor / Caulker / Monk instead of McCauley if you ever wanna play Swansea & Sunderland defence at the same time - WBA defenders are always pants.

True, but it's the plausible uncertainty that gets you, and makes you unable to safely make him your captain so you're already facing losing huge numbers of points because of that. With the crunch end of the CL group coming up and Napoli and Bayern Munich involved, the uncertainty is at critical point.
