[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

I never understood why a professional athlete can’t cope with playing more than one game of football in a week. I used to play for four hours every night then jog home. Down the park, jumpers for goalposts, isn’t it? Marvellous.

Talk of rest, rotation and jetlag has been rife this week; just when we get a side that looks capable of destroying our mini league rivals, along comes an International break and Champions League fixtures to mess with our heads. At least we can rely on some mid-table “differentials” to bypass all that nonsense…

Mauro Formica

We picked out Mauro Formica as a differential back in week one when he was still very much an unknown quantity, and despite an up and down start to the season for Blackburn, Mauro Formica has shown enough promise in recent weeks to bring him back into our thinking. Reveling in his role just behind Yakubu, Formica has been central to many of Blackburn’s attacking ploys, picking up a goal and an assist in his last three games.

At 5.0, Formica sits at the very bottom end of the market and looks a great alternative for that fifth midfielder slot, designed to free up funds. Fixtures look pretty appealing compared to alternatives like Victor Moses and Nathan Dyer. Indeed, two consecutive away trips won’t worry Rovers given that they’ve scored in every game on the road this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side enjoy a decent run of opponents, which could see Formica return further profits.

Gareth McAuley

At 4.0, defenders don’t come any cheaper than Gareth McAuley and with West Brom about to embark on a decent run of fixtures, he looks like outstanding value. He might not be the glamour signing you’ve been craving after two weeks without a fantasy football fix, but as a long term investment, he looks like a solid pick and a good differential considering his low ownership of just 0.9%.

Points wise, we expect to see a decent amount of clean sheets from Roy Hodgson’s side this season. They’ve managed three so far, which is already more than they had the whole of last season. McAuley has also suggested that he could come good with the odd goal and assist. A career average of a goal every 10 games is hardly Lionel Messi standards, but for a defender, that shows promise. A look over his EA PPI scores also suggests he should be in for a few extra bonus points to add to the three he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Fulham.

Jack Rodwell

After Royston Drenthe leapfrogged the differentials straight into the Scout Picks this week, we’re taking a look at his midfield partner Jack Rodwell as a potential alternative. At 0.7 cheaper, an almost guaranteed starter and probably Everton’s form player of the last few games, Rodwell is much more than a poor second choice. With the confidence gained from his International debut, we’re expecting a big performance from the young England star against Wolves.

Despite previously being talked up as a future centre-half, Rodwell has developed into a quality box to box midfielder, and looks a much improved fantasy prospect compared to last year. The departure of Mikel Arteta and return to fitness of Marouane Fellaini has allowed Rodwell a lot more freedom in the middle of the park, and two goals in three games are evidence of this new attacking threat. Our recent members ‘Talent’ article provides all the stats to back up our hunch this week, and with ownership of just 1.9%, Rodwell could well sneak under the radar to provide a solid differential return over Everton’s next three fixtures.

Anybody want to argue the, "you can't take hits for defenders" point with me?

My case for taking hits for defenders is that if you have a poor defender who you think will get you 2-4 points in the next two weeks and you want to transfer in a defender who you believe can get you 4-12 over the two weeks, you should do it the earlier week for a hit so that you can make necessary changes in the next week with your attackers. For instance, if you decide to hold firm with the defender and do it for free next week and then one of your meal ticket attackers gets injured and you need a replacement you can't change your defender without a hit once again. If you have taken a hit the previous week you will already have made up some of the point hit last week, with another chance this week. Rant over, now excuse me while I sell Given/Fitz Hall for Westwood/Turner

Yes, what you're saying is one of the few examples where it's worth it. If you think it will get you more than the 4 points over 2-3 weeks and you know you will have other transfers to make those weeks then it's worth doing.

I think that you need to make transfers with your attackers at some point so you might as well take a hit or be happy to keep your defenders constant the whole year. Which I don't think will work but maybe I'm wrong...

My theory with defenders is to pretty much avoid all transfers there. I try to pick ones at the start that will play most minutes, I don't chase points in defence and don't go out of my way to make improvements there.

yes... no point taking points in the defense... I wanted to ditch Bos for Jonesm but I wouldn't do it for a hit now... when the time is right I'll make it with no hits, I got other defenders, beter have a guaranteed 1/0 than a probable -2/-3...

If you can pick defenders to last you a season, God bless you but I think with fixtures it's better to make timely transfers. If the taylors get 0 points over the next 4 weeks wouldn't it have been better to sell them?

do serious believe the taylors are only going to get 0 points the next 4 gws? if you do, you go and transfer them... i personally don't believe that, and I think you're just tryingto convince yourself...
I was tempted on trnsfering zamora out for bendtner for a hit...but it's to risk... point hits is where you lose this game. however i would take much more easily a hit doing a forward transfer, then doing a defense transfer....

No you lose the game by picking the wrong players. Yes, the way you land in the top 100 or whatever is by picking the perfect team and making < 1 transfer a week. But if you don't pick a perfect team, as every one of us has not you need to be brave enough to take hits. The inflexible nevernevernevernevernever is how you lose the game.

The entire thing is about maximizing points over the timescale of interest. If the timescale is a single GW, you should generally not take hits. If it's for a good number of GWs, go right ahead. But there are situations when it can make sense to take a hit on a defender for a single GW - when the defender won't play anyway and you don't have 3 good options to cover him. This is my situation with Bosingwa and I will happily take a hit to find someone better.

Random rules like "never take a hit on a defender" or even "never take 8pt hits" are daft because you can easily name examples where you make a net gain breaking the rule. They happen virtually every week. They're just guidelines which avoid many mistakes, but they can themselves be the mistake if you miss an opportunity.

My analysis is: Swansea have received 1 goal at home. Man U have scored in every single away game 10 goals total. Wigan have received 8 goals at home. Blackburn have scored in every single away game 7 goals total.

Tough one! Vorm could get more saves? Blackburn is weaker than Man U but Wigan is weaker than Swansea. What do you think?

Yes but you're forgetting Aguero has game during week, a big one at that, he prob won't play 90. Assists as well, Rvp probably will score more as Newcastle will keep it tight..

Newcastle will try and keep it tight, much the same as Poland did in '39 when they encountered Germany. I predict a similar result.

Rooneys is probably the best out of the bicycle kicks. Messi's goal is made better because of Iniesta's lush pass. Neymar just makes the defenders looks like utter noobs

You have too much money in defence, sell Bos for a 4m option. Wilkinson, McAuley, N Taylor all offer decent clean sheet potential.

Why no love for Adebayor on here?

    Since i bought him he's scored 4, 6, 8, 2, 2, 6

Pretty damn consistent for a forward that's supposedely off form. Great fixtures & bargain price means im definitely keeping him.

I got him the same week as you. It's because he hasn't scored, assists don't get noticed as much despite only being worth 1 point less (pre bonus at least). He'll score Monday night.

generally people got pissed with those 2,2 weeks. especially when rvp was ripping it up. Cant afford misfiring strikers when another is singlehandedly winning h2h matches etc.

An average of 4.7 (rounded up) is not really good enough for a forward, particularly when forwards are meant to be pulling your score up relative to the other players. I think the only reason people atm are still touching Ade is because the forward situation isn't good right now - so bad that 4.7 looks pretty decent.

I have the same problem with enrique and sinclair both on bench.
I went for Enrique as first sub
1 Cos I have no other pool players
2 I already have a Swansea player Vorm
3 Enrique is more likely to get an assist/clean sheet v Chelsea then Sinclair is of scoring against Man u.

I have a real problem with this team:
    Foster
    Shawcross, Jones, Lescott
    Arteta, Silva, Nani, Drenthe
    Van Persie, Hernández, Adebayor
    Bench Given Enrique, Hall, VDV

Before anyone gets too excited it’s my ESPN fantasy football team NOT FPL.

The problem is that there are only substitutions in this game where the player in the same position does not play. In other words VDV can only play if one of the other mids is injured. Enrique can only play if a defender gets injured. Also the formations are pre-set at the start of each gameweek and cannot be changed until the following gameweek.
I can’t believe I will have VDV on the bench.
This is for those of you who think FPL is a terrible game…surely ESPN fantasy soccer is worse?

Ah the Espn fantasy soccer was better last season. Then they made a whole lot of rule changes like splitting the season after gw18 and starting again. Before you used to only have 30 transfers for the entire season.
I am persevering for this season out of stubbornness.

No. Price changes have influenced my transfers (e.g. buying a player I want early in the week before price changes rather than Saturday morning) but that's only because the money made adds up and I think will help me score points over the season. I'm playing for points.
