Arsene Wenger praises Gervinho’s effect on Robin Van Persie’s game. Steven Gerrard is making good progress from an ankle problem but continues to be sidelined, while Brendan Rodgers talks up the importance of Joe Allen to Swansea’s style of play.

While there’s no doubt the star of Arsenal’s season has been Robin Van Persie, Arsene Wenger has taken time out to hail the influence of Gervinho on his new-look team. The Ivorian has improved as the campaign has progressed, with 5 assists, a goal and 5 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points in his last five games indicative of his displays. Wenger reckons the summer signing from Lille has been a pivotal part of his side’s attacking ploy, with his movement up front one of the reasons for Van Persie’s outstanding season:

He is vital for us because Robin likes to go to the ball and Gervinho likes to go into the space so they always push defenders back. That gives us space in midfield to create for Robin. Overall I am very happy.

Ashley Cole suffered an ankle injury in training prior to Chelsea’s defeat in Leverkusen last night. Jose Bosingwa stepped in at left-back, with Branislav Ivanovic once again the preferred choice at right-back. According to the club’s official website, Cole has a 60% chance of featuring against Wolves this weekend, with Bosingwa his likely replacement against Mick McCarthy’s side.

Joe Riley has been ruled out of Bolton’s home clash with Everton on Saturday. The youngster has started the last two games at right-back but has failed to sufficiently recover from a hamstring problem picked up in training. Gretar Steinsson is looks the most obvious replacement, with Dedryk Boyata just back in light training, according to Owen Coyle.

Steven Gerrard is making good progress from an ankle infection but is still unavailable for selection, according to Kenny Dalglish. The Liverpool skipper has missed the last three league matches and will sit out the home showdown with Man City this Sunday. Jack Robinson is the only other player set to miss out as the Reds aim to end the last unbeaten record in the Premier League.

Joe Allen is expected to start for Swansea at home to Aston Villa this weekend. The midfielder has been sparkling form for the Welsh outfit over the last few weeks, returning 2 goals, 2 assists and 7 bonus points for his Fantasy owners but a calf problem meant he was used as a second half substitute in last week’s clash with Man United. Brendan Rodgers is clearly a big fan of Allen, admitting:

We could not play Joe from the start of the game because our squad is only thin and we cannot afford to lose someone like him. Joe has been outstanding for us in that position this season. Joe is influential for us, and he is also a reference point for our pressing game, which is crucial in that midfield area.

Tony Pulis received a welcome boost as he looks to address a run of five losses in the last six games this weekend at home to Blackburn. Wilson Palacios has declared he is fit and available for selection and could bolster the Potters midfield at the Britannia on Saturday- the Honduran has played just forty minutes in the league so far this season for Stoke.

The Mirror reported this morning that Wayne Rooney is less than 50% likely to face Newcastle this weekend. Rooney is receiving intensive treatment on a hip injury picked up in a clash with Swansea keeper Michel Vorm last Saturday and missed the midweek Champions League game with Benfica.

Alex McLeish has admitted he is wary of becoming overly-reliant on Aston Villa’s youngsters this season. Despite some impressive showing from his less-experienced players, Big Eck hinted he is looking for his senior players to step up in performance, saying:

Guys like Chris Herd and Barry Bannan are getting a crash course in the Premier League. To rely on these kids for the whole season is putting a lot of pressure on them. (Herd) has certainly shown the mental toughness to handle it. He’s developing but let’s not put too much pressure on him. Sometimes he will have to get a rest. That’s the challenge that’s ahead of us.

McLeish is keen for his youngsters to gain experience elsewhere, though. Gary Gardner has joined Coventry on loan until the 3rd January. He joins the likes of Nathan Baker, Shane Lowry and Habib Beye, who have all left Villa on loan deals over the last few days.

Nicklas Bendtner has hinted he may be prepared to consider a permanent move to Sunderland when his loan move from Arsenal expires at the end of the season. The Gunners are keen to sell and Bendtner is determined to seek pastures new and although the big Dane has scored just 2 league goals since moving from the Emirates, he’s been satisfied with his displays so far:

As a player you should have ambition – I’m sure every player wants to play in the Champions League – but I haven’t ruled out staying here at Sunderland. As I’ve said before, I just want to enjoy the year I have here and then see what happens in the summer. I am enjoying being the focal point. There’s definitely more to come, I think that it’s going to be a natural development going forward, because it’s been a while since I played. It’s going really well, so I just want to win a few more games and add to my goal tally.

      I've had Ade and VDV for at least 4 weeks. Very happy, haven't wavered...much easier on the heart than that Citeh trinity. I would say stay away from Bale, he's sure to get crocked with the way he plays on the left and he's destined to get you nothing from how I've seen him play right or centrally. That right foot of his is essentially useless. The left side isn't big enough for him...but if BAE keeps playing positionally the way I think Harry & Co are telling him (he was almost taking up that CB role position from LK and pushing everything to the left or trying one-off counter balls deep right...). Bale was doing similarly in starting a lot centrally because everyone...and their mother knew where he was going...left, and this just gave him more room to push balls into space and run; around, through and between defense.

      In conclusion, not liking the strategery that Roy pulls for this week. But it could mean another decent outing for Ade, or even the hombre on spot-kick duties...be it before or after the precious 65 minute mark (VDV owners know this marker well).

    De Gea, K. Walker, Jones, Jose Enrique, Silva, Walters, Bale, Ramsey, Hernandez, Suarez, Aguero. (Subs: Ruddy, Gabbidon, Orr, Reo-Coker).

    I'm desperately trying to work RVP into my team somehow as, at the minute, I'm like the only kid at school to still have a Nokia 3310 while all my mates have an iPhone. I'd most like to boot Suarez out but RVP in for Suarez leaves me trying to find 3.4m from somewhere... Any help and suggestions will be extremely welcome.

        If I take Suarez out for RVP and take De Gea out I have 3.2 to spend on a keeper... Another possibility is RVP in for Suarez and Sturridge in for Hernandez. I don't really want to lose Hernandez now that Newcastle have been brought back down to earth by Citeh but Chelsea are playing Wolves at home. I hate making decisions.

      Let's face it, getting RVP in isn't going to be pretty ... ready?

      Hernandez & Suarez --> Bendtner/klasnic/hoilett/yakubu/morison & RVP.

      If you're set on keeping Hernandez, it's:

      Silva --> Sessegnon/other
      Suarez --> RVP

      If you're set on keeping Silva & Hernandez, it's:

      Suarez --> Adebayor
      Aguero --> RVP

      If you don't like any of these, I don't know how you're getting RVP.

    This tweet is for any balls of steel players here.

    Steve Bruce ponders playing Kieran Richardson just behind Nicklas Bendtner, with Stephane Sessegnon back out wide.

    For those familiar with the ups and downs of richardson....when Bruce tells him to be more attacking he has a tendency to haul in some mega pts.

    Too risky for me....but I'd definitely be considering him for a spot the differential article this week.

    Manu "Coverage".. Midfield is a minefield.. Defense too expensive and at risk of rotation, and same with the forward line..
    So who's the best option?
    Jones?
    Hernandez?
    Are they both huge rotation risks?

      YOu've just named them. Although Jones could be rested this weekend. Hernandez is the current main source of goals, Jones is the cheapest defender. Agree too difficult to tell at the moment who else to get.

      Personally Man U aren't performing well enough for me to invest in any over priced rotation risks. The only player I'd consider at the moment is Jones, because he seems likely to start most games and United seem quite tight at the back.

      dayummmm, that's giving me a bit of a headache! I'd say Best to Helguson, but with him being a doubt I don't know... Graham has some pretty nice fixtures for the next few weeks why not do:

      Naylor>Wilkinson
      Best>Graham

      That might look a little better. I think having those 5 big players is really limiting your team overall though, maybe just do Best>Graham and play him over Dyer this week. Then if Nani does nothing next week you can downgrade him and boost your defence.

    I have more of less given up on this FF season, but could use some help to try and salvage some pride. Due to what my rivals have, I shunned the likes of RVP, Silva and Aguero to try and give me differentials to help make up the ever growing difference.

    Any tips (besides retiring from the whole FF trade altogether):

    Vorm (Given)
    Brown Tierney Evans (Komps Enrique)
    Mata VDV Ramsey Dyer (Moses)
    Rooney Ade Suarez

    1 transfer this week and 2M in the bank.

    Kind of tempted to keep Roo as he could be a real differential going forward. Hate to bail at this stage on him, but maybe I need to.

          Why on earth would u bench Silva? I dont understand why people keep saying City have tough fixtures, when they beat Man U 6-1 away which is arguably the toughest fixture of any!

      Nothing desperate needs doing. I'd probably save it.

    who would you play between these two for this upcoming gameweek

    1. Drenthe vs Bolton away
    2. Graham vs Villa at home?

    Thanks!

        Think got to play Walters at home to Blackburn.

        Agree that Graham/Drenthe is a close call.

        Would personally lean to Drenthe I reckon though.

        Well that's pretty much exactly the same thing as you'd be silly to bench Walters this weekend ... so I'd pick Walters & Graham.

    Given, Vorm
    Kompany, Taylor R, Jose Enrique, Jones, Turner
    Silva, Drenthe, Van der Vaart, Dyer, Nani
    Best, Van Persie, Bendtner

    1FT with £3m in bank but no one shouts out, any ideas?

    Sezznon time up, he MUST be a winger now, not behind Bendy

      Goals goals goals ... and 2 clean sheets for me.

      I'm really biased, but I do think we're in with a shot of nicking something at OT.
