Our fifth week of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game came to a close, with an English side finally clinching a place in the knock-out stages. Hats off to Arsene Wenger, then, with Arsenal’s win over Dortmund just one of eight fixtures we’re running the rule over…

FC APOEL

The attacking stats (37% of possession and just one shot all game) do the Cypriot champions no favours but, right now, do they care? Not in the slightest. In arguably the most competitive group of all, FC APOEL have exceeded all expectations by becoming the first team from Cyprus to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages with a 0-0 draw away at Zenit St. Petersburg.

Unbeaten in all three games on the road, victories in both home games so far, APOEL’s resolute display and adept work off the ball was exemplified by the likes of Nuno Morais last night, with 10 recovered balls and a clean sheet handing the defender an 8 point Fantasy haul. People often mock the boring and predictable nature of the Champions League group stages but APOEL have ripped up the form book and proved the doubters wrong, clinching a place in the last sixteen with a game still to spare.

Robin Van Persie

It’s more a case of “how many” whenever the Dutchman takes to the pitch these days. Dortmund arrived at the Emirates in strong form last night but Arsenal continued their recent resurgence by sweeping aside the Bundesliga champions. Alex Song deserves a mention, dancing through the away defence to set up the hosts’ opener but Van Persie, once again, stole the show with both his side’s goals in the 2-1 win. The Gunners skipper played the full ninety minutes last night but will have until Saturday dinnertime to recover, with a 5.30pm kick off against Fulham next on the agenda.

Didier Drogba

The big Ivorian was once again chosen to lead the line ahead of Fernando Torres. Having started against Liverpool last weekend, Drogba vindicated his selection last night by firing the Blues ahead at Leverkusen. Andre Villas-Boas’ side once again came unstuck, though, and are anything but certain to progress to the knockout stages. A goalless draw or win at home to Valencia in the final group match is now required but given their defensive woes, nothing seems certain right now for the out of sorts Blues.

Roberto Soldado

Pretty much the whole Valencia team got in on the action last night as the Spanish side sliced through Genk like a hot machete through butter. Roberto Soldado provided the cutting edge, grabbing a hat trick inside the first thirty-six 36 minutes to return a 13 point Fantasy haul half-time whistle. Team mates Pablo Hernandez (11), Costa (12) and Jonas (12) all picked up substantial hauls and have helped their side’s chances of qualification no end. By our calculations, with the Valencia goal difference now suitably amped up, they can qualify for the next round with a score draw away at Stamford Bridge next Matchday.

Lionel Messi

A night of heavy sparring between the European heavyweights of AC Milan and Barcelona ended in a narrow victory for the visitors in a five-goal San Siro thriller.

The indomitable Clarence Seedorf teed up Zlatan Ibrahimovic to open the scoring against his old club- one he had talked about a fair bit in his recently released book. Kevin-Prince Boateng made that seem a distant memory with this cracker of a goal for the home side.

A Mark Van Bommel own-goal made Barca’s task a little easier before a re-taken (with yellow card in-between for a stuttered run up) Lionel Messi penalty made it two. The Argentine was then given license to provide when he threaded a pitch perfect pass through a tunnel of Milan defenders to find Xavi, giving the reigning champions the last goal needed for victory. Thirteen points in five games and Barcelona are home and hosed at top of the group.

Hulk

The Brazilian striker’s fourth goal of the campaign helped Porto to a 2-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk that subsequently knocked their hosts out of the Champions League. FC Porto are back in the picture ahead of their final home fixture at Estádio do Dragão – Zenit St Petersburg will visit needing just a draw while the Portuguese side have to win in order to qualify. Fireworks will be expected in about two weeks from now – be it on the pitch or in the skies of Portugal. With Hulk having failed to score in only one of his games so far, the smart money’s on him producing yet again.

Ioannis Fetfatzidis

Arsenal’s victory over Dortmund meant Marseille needed just a point at home to Olympiakos. Having conceded a single goal in the Champions League prior to yesterday, the scene was set for Group F to be done and dusted with one Matchday to go. The Greek visitors had other ideas, though, and with ten minutes remaining, royally upset the party when substitute Ioannis Fetfatzidis drilled home from fifteen yards out. Marseille are still in pole position for second spot, though- victory in Dortmund in the final group stage match would ensure qualification.

Marek Bakos

With Barcelona and Milan already through in Group H, BATE could have secured the third place Europa League spot with victory over Viktoria Plzen. Marek Bakos had other ideas, though, scoring his, and Plzen’s, second goal of the campaign in a 1-0 away win. If BATE fail to win in Barcelona next time round -there’s a very strong possibility this will be the case- Plzen will seal that third place.

I'm tempted by Naylor too, but not overly convinced Swansea will keep a clean sheet so didn't really wanna double up on GK/def.. Close but went for Enrique due to the chance of an assist etc.

Also wanna get Arteta and possibly Rooney out but don't wanna take a hit on either this week.

N taylor gotta get the nudge over Wilkinson (-9 goals in last two games, against bolton and QPR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and Enrique. Definately worth doing Wilkenson-> brown

Also while your at it, might as well swap drenthe for moses when it doesn't cost you points- they will score the same points 😛

Lol, only if AVB takes over the Blackburn job. you can keep wilko for one more week, but then you have to switch him for a Sunderland kid. And don't come crying to me when Sunderland keep a clean sheet and Wilko turns up with a 1 point haul, right?

Wilkinson costs 4.0, is pretty much nailed on and plays for a team that have shown they can get clean sheets. Admittedly thats not happening at the moment, but I think they'll sort themselves out and I can see them getting clean sheets in the future. Home to Blackburn seems as good of a time as any, especially since they haven't been involved in Europe this week.

Definetly worth hanging onto in my opinion.

I just shifted to a five man mid last week (352), all 6 mill plus, got myself 76 points so quite happy with how it worked out, if only that rascal Silva had not been subbed on would have got 80!

I do like having three strikers usually, but have balotelli and more pressing transfers over last few weeks so ended up keeping him. Will be downgrading him to a cheaper striker whos guaranteed starts after this week or next.

good point, well made! Both my big mids failed misrably :(. thing is though have gone for a cheapo defence, which needs heavy rotation, so important I can load out mid, especially as I can't go for 3 up front with Balotteli selection atm. ultimately I desire 3-4-3 or 4-4-2, but having five mids is where I've ended up atm as tough fixtures at back and poor choice 3rd striker!

Last year was all about the 5 man midfield but this year seems to be an abundance of striking talent and a lack of real good mid priced midfielders like Adam, Brunt etc.

I'm benching Ramsey this week with a midfield of

      Silva/VdV/Sinclair/Walters/Ramsey

before that I had Petrov instead of Walters

I would say the only time I've been stung was when I had Brunt and I played him over Sinclair when Brunt was 50% to play against Wolves (if I recall) - he came on and got a yellow. But in general it's working for me.

Think I am going to give up on Given now to free up some cash.
    Already have Vorm.
Looking at Al-Habsi, Hennesy, Kenny or Ruddy
I'm thinking Ruddy as he gives me the most cash. To be honest i cant see him playing unless Vorm is injurred.

You're replacing your United attacking coverage of Rooney and Nani with Hernandez.

I think it is mad that people are choosing now to ship out or downgrade their United coverage. Next week is a far better time to do that considering they are away from home.

I would keep Nani and wait on news regarding Rooney.

          P.S. Keep Jones!

I agree with IT, play the rotation. But if you're thinking of sticking Vorm in week in, week out, then cheapest will obviously give more cash. But Given at £4.9m to Krul £4.6m or Ruddy at £4m, would that extra £0.6m make a big difference to your team? A bigger difference than having the rotation flexibility of the form pair?

That's how I would approach the decision.

You need to improve your defense IMO. Play Enrique instead of doubling on Stoke. I would do Nani to Bale honestly. Next week sell both Sturridge and Gabby depending on the game will Sturridge perform. And get Baines at the back for a 4 point hit next week. Seems like Villa will score, I fancy Gabby this GW. Hope I helped

I'm definitely playing JE over Wilko.
You don't reckon Ade is a good buy with this Form/Fixtures/DGW, he could implode from here? Gabby might get an assist at the max - but I don't want that cos of SuperVorm 😛

Cheers for the response Frazek. To free up the cash in defence/gk it would cost me a bungload and I can't afford that. Prospectively, it'd be Jones out for Rangel, de Gea out for Vorm and then Suarez out for RVP.

For the sake of it my team is: de Gea (Ruddy), K Walker, Jones, Jose Enrique (Gabbidon, Orr), Silva, Walters, Bale, Ramsey (Reo-Coker), Hernandez, Suarez and Aguero.

Yeah, that's complicated. De Gea at GK isn't great long -term, in my view. This GW, were I you, I'd sit on the FT, then play a 3x switch next GW for a 4pt hit.

          De Gea to Vorm
          Orr to Simspon (NEW)
Suarez to RvP (if the sums add up)

Cheers but putting Simpson in for Orr and removing de Gea leaves me with 2.9 to spend on a keeper... :L Plus I wouldn't want to put Simpson in this GW as they're playing United at Old Trafford and, despite United not being very good at all currently, they could kick into top gear at any time.

I did write that you should save FT this week, play 3 next GW. But if the sums don't add up you'll have to get creative. Switch Aguero/Suarez for RvP, Ade/Studge, something like that.

Might take a risk and bring in Young. Rooney's most likely ruled out and so is Welbeck (I think) so Young might once again find himself playing behind the striker.
United are due a good performance and might pick themselves up against Newcastle.

    Good move?

It's something I've been mulling too, but I'm reluctant to give up on Rooney unless I get confirmation he'll miss NEW. But it's pretty tempting to take a 4pt hit on Rooney/Ramsey (OUT), Ade/Young (IN).

I'll be waiting to the last minute.

I don't know where this has come from, most likely one person has said it on here and it's spread like mad.

Anyway, I highly doubt he'll be benched. The Carling Cup game midweek is where he'll get his rest, I'd wager.

Thanks. Do you reckon, though? Bar City, Newcastle haven't shipped too many goals, and United aren't exactly firing on all cylinders, especially if Rooney's a doubt. If he doesn't start, I've got Dyer coming in as first sub then I'll also have the possibility of a Newcastle clean sheet.

It's a close call but playing Saylor would break two of my own personal FPL rules:
          1) In close calls, go with the midfielder ahead of the defender.
          2) Avoid playing defenders who are away to Man United.

Knee jerking is of the moment though. and being in poor form up front for an unusually timd man utd attack whilst carrying an injury is not a good moment, especially if you might be put in at centre mid (even if thats unlikely);.

Planning to get rid of Silva as I really don't see him getting too many returns in the coming weeks.
His next 4 are: Liverpool (A), Norwich (H), Chelsea (A), Arsenal (H). I think he's unlikely to play vs Norwich since he's got Bayern on the same week.

    Anyone else thinking the same?

Part of me wishes i got rid of him instead of Nani this week but i would lose far too much value on him.

Yup, Agbonlahor bombing down the flanks could have a field day.

    Hi Andy

I read your review of Wednesday night's Euro action and have seen the offical UEFA tables and all the papers. I am realy confused how everyone is saying that Chelsea is above Valencia in the table with 10-4 goals whereas Valencia has 12-4 which is a better goal difference AND higher goals scored. Everyone is then saying that if Chelsea draw with Valencia 0-0 in their final group match they will go through but any other draw doesn't work for them. Even taking the result of matches between the sides (1-1 in the earlier head-to-head) I'm obviously missing something! Please provide the missing link! Thanks

I would imagine Chelsea are ahead on the H2H - scored more away goals than Valencia (i.e. because Valencia haven't had the chance to). This would explain why, if Valencia match that, they go through (on goal difference) ... but I could be wrong.

The only logical reason I think - and I may have read it somewhere - is that the bottom team is eliminated from the H2H calculations so the group effectively consists of 3 teams - that would wipeout Valencia's goal advantage

Isn't it just always done on head-to-head first and then goal difference etc if the scores are tied? Makes sense to me, otherwise you could get some team scoring 5 or 6 in what is effectively a dead rubber

Hi Superdunny - actually that doesn't work on its own because the H2H was 1-1 so logically then if the draw was 1-1 Valencia would still be ahead. No it's got to be the elimination of the 4th team in the group. I think (if I'm right) the rule of eliminating the 4th team is very suspect anyway because to counter the dead rubber argument then you could say the fixture order was suspect because the earlier match of Chelsea v Genk was not a dead rubber at that time so Chelsea were disadvantaged! Anyway its not important and we could argue to the cows come home!
