This weekend’s home clash with Chelsea precedes a hugely promising run of four fixtures that sees Newcastle ripe for Fantasy investment….

Three home games in the next four for Blackburn has us pondering Steve Kean’s attacking assets, while Jamie O’Hara will be looking to fire Wolves up the table with a kind run of matches at Molineux on the horizon.

Our new rankings are viewable in your sidebar as ever. Read on for details of this week’s big moves.

Swansea’s sixth clean sheet of the season against Villa once again rewarded owners of Michel Vorm. The Dutchman climbs back on top of our keeper rankings, toppling Sunderland’s Kieren Westwood who failed miserably to capitalise on a home clash with lowly Wigan at the weekend and now suffers a drop as his fixtures stiffen, with three away trips in the next four gameweeks.

Newcastle’s Tim Krul and Blackburn’s Paul Robinson now occupy the top three slots – both enjoy improved fixtures, with the latter offering a good fit when it comes to alternating with the aforementioned Vorm.

Leighton Baines retains the top spot in our defender rankings, having delivered a goal, assist and a clean sheet over his last two outings. With fixtures on his side, Baines has every opportunity to go on delivering and justify his hefty price tag; with just 6.1% ownership, Baines also presents a potentially profitable differential going into the Christmas period.

Left-backs dominate our current thinking – with Jose Enrique and Ryan Taylor featuring next. Both carry attacking potential and line up in defences that are well capable of returning clean sheets in the coming gameweeks as fixtures improve for the pair.

With Phil Jones rested from the 1-1 with Newcastle, his placing in our rankings takes a dent. With very strong fixtures over the next six gameweeks, Jones holds in fourth but would have perhaps pushed up further with if his starting role had been more secure. There’s no question that coverage of the improved United defence looks desirable for the month ahead and Jones remains the best value route in to Alex Ferguson’s defence. Only Nemanja Vidic and perhaps Patrice Evra present real security.

The situation with the City defence was confused further by Vincent Kompany’s smartly taken goal at Anfield – his second of the season. Having previously failed to threaten goals from set-pieces, Kompany is now a clear menace to opposition from a dead-ball. Micah Richards, however, has his own threat at set-plays and is unquestionably more likely to offer assists, having delivered five so far this term. It’s a close call between the pair, with Kompany perhaps delivering the greater security – we go with Richards for now.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s hamstring injury has him drop from the top of our midfield rankings. There’s still uncertainty over the Dutchman’s availability for the weekend clash with Bolton and his FPL ownership has suffered as a result. Van der Vaart holds in our top five, but David Silva’s consistency has him climb to the top, with Tottenham’s Gareth Bale benefiting from four consecutive gameweeks of returns to claim second.

Chelsea’s Juan Mata delivered on his potential in the 3-0 dismantling of Wolves of the weekend – his second double figure FPL return of the season. With Frank Lampard rested to the bench, Mata succeeds the England veteran as our weapon of choice within Andre Villas-Boas’ midfield. Although fixtures stiffen badly for Chelsea in the coming weeks, this may well see attacking returns increase as the Blues are forced to retaliate against Newcastle, City and Tottenham in the next four gameweeks.

Lower down the rankings, mid-price potential is offered by Wolves’ Jamie O’Hara, Bolton’s Chris Eagles, Sunderland’s Seb Larsson and the omnipresent Jon Walters of Stoke.

Newcastle’s Hatem Ben Arfa is perhaps the most intriguing new option here – offering out of position potential, playing up in support of Demba Ba. There will be concerns of the security of the Frenchman’s starting role once Alan Pardew’s options up front are restored, but if Ben Arfa can do enough to cement his start, at 5.4 in the FPL, he looks a strong value option.

The forward rankings see movement in the top three with Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor and United’s Javier Hernandez the men in form, with the fixtures to maintain it through December. They benefit from declining confidence in City’s Sergio Aguero who has returned 2 goals in his last seven appearances. The Argentine’s winner from the bench in last night’s Carling Cup tie issued a reminder of his qualities, and with Norwich the visitors this weekend, he remains firmly in our Fantasy plans. Both Adebayor and Hernandez have stronger form and fixtures to come however.

Newcastle’s Demba Ba and Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge both maintain high rankings with decent form – Ba in particular enjoys a big climb with his fixtures improving markedly in December.

Blackburn’s pairing of Yakubu and Junior Hoilett present budget options lower down the rankings; while Steve Kean’s side have struggled for results, goals are flowing and both players should be in line for profits from a run of three home games in four. Like Baines in defence and O’Hara in midfield, they are your December differentials for those looking to gamble in order to close a mini-league gap.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Actually, I might be wrong. One of the things I learnt on the last podcast that most money was raised through player sales.

Keane definitely spent 40m+ one summer I'm sure. I'll toodle off and look for some figures.

I think If a huge offer came in for a Sunderland player he'd be sold with or without the managers consent. Unless he's lowered his expectations, which is highly possible, I don't see why he'd take the Sunderland job.

O'Hara and Rooney. Just look at their history. Rooney's one of the best 3-4 FF guys out there. Might be going through a bad patch but he'll come good. O'Hara has had 2 very strong FF seasons as a loaner to Portsmouth and Wolves (2nd half of last season). Walcott has an injury history and a history of being very inconsistent although when he's good, he scores in bunches. Ba is/was the sleeper of the season imo, he had a terrific 2nd half last season for West Ham, but he's not Rooney.

A lot of competition at RB though. Rafael, Fabio, Smalling, Jones...

Surely Evra won't play every game over the Christmas period? It would be ideal if Fabio gets starts in the easier home games, like Wigan, Wolves and Blackburn.

Do they have a better defender than Brown? - no.
Better mid than Larsson? no. Sess? could be benched imo, but should still play.
      Better striker than Bendtner? no.

Could easily see the likes of Vaughan and Gardner play now, good players relegated last season on the bench...

Super value, if United had a MF who could get his head up, Chicharito could be in on goal 10 times in every game, his movement is exceptional. I want him in but can't drop RVP and have Aguero home to Norwich this week, gonna get him very soon though

If going for A, take Ba or Sturridge as your forward, then use remaining money to upgrade another defender to Baines or Vidic. Not much value at 8.5 for forwards, unless you can afford adebayor. Alternatively, a wild punt would be balotelli, could be brilliant and could be awful

I'm not sure I understand the logic of firing Bruce. They just suffered their first bad loss of the season (Wigan at home), but they've played Ars, Che, Man Utd close (1 goal losses) and haven't been blown out by anyone. They sit on a goal differential of 0, which is a helluva lot better than most teams around them and have only conceded 15 goals in 13 games. Sessegnon and Bendtner have gone through cold patches which strikes me as the basic reason why they aren't in the top half of the table. Strange decision to me.

Their home record last year was awful and this year nothing special.

They've spent a lot of money on a lot of players - Vaughan & Gardner relegated last year and on the bench. Haven't replaced the goals of Gyan, Bent and even Welbeck. Also bought the likes of Ji and Wickham but haven't played them regularly.

Should be doing a lot better on paper - around 10th I'd put them...

Don't drop Kompany. He's on pace for 150+ points this year; had he been properly labeled a defender last year and been given 4 CS points instead of 1 for MNC's 18 clean sheets last year, he'd have been on 149 points last year. He's money. If you want Everton coverage, why not Jagielka(5.3) or Hibbert(4.8) for one of your NWC defenders ? I agree, Ba/Sturridge for Bendtner next week.

So Mancini wants to field kids? To embarass the authorities over fixture pile up. Which obviously they sprang on him without notice.

Maybe he should take a quick look at his squad.

+1 ILF. I thought Arse did really well and could have easily won yesterday...a good performance by their mainly youngsters.

He's the wrong man to point it out but I think there are too many fixtures. Most players clearly can't handle it.

Surely that is why they all have a squad, Garg?

Yeah of course but only so many teams can afford to have big squads of good players, and regardless I think club football should be about having one good team with substitutes, not about being able to field TWO or more different teams

I accept that but I guess that's why some teams are always in Europe and some can only dream. The teams themselves can only do what they can and when someone like Mancini complains you know things are over crowded but, as with all things in life, you prioritise.

I dunno... how many games has Messi missed for Barca this year?

For teams that aren't in Europe, there are fewer games now than pre-PL, when it was 22 clubs in the First Division, and the League Cup was 2-legged from the start.

On the other hand, the games are played at a faster pace - perversely, the fact that players are aerobically fitter now means that they are more likely to suffer from injuries as they play at full capacity for the full 90 mins.

Interesting point. I often wonder how league 2 teams can play week in, week out. I think they are just less "fit" or "fitter" in the right way.

This is the point where DBRonaldo would jump in, I miss him 😕

Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea have had to deal with it for years, with less deep squads than City. It's simple, you play the kids and maybe strengthen a bit if you get to the final.

One of the things I like about the CC is that it gives fans a chance to see the up and coming players in a full game. There are few 19 - 22 year olds who are physically ready for the grind of the premiership. It's the big club equivalent of the minor leagues

I agree with this although I doubt anyone would admit that Mancini rang up Arsene and struck up a deal on who would play 😉

I fully appreciate the amount of energy used in top class games. These are however supposed to be some of the world's top class footballers. Maybe during times of high pressure two games a week spells, they could refrain from going out on the p**s till three in the morning? Or shag**ng all their team-mates WAGs who are. 🙂

Back 5 are: Kompany, Jones, Enrique, Simpson and Shawcross. Should I just tough it out with Shawcross? I dont like his prospects much anymore but really want to address forwards and mids in next week or two.

You could just play the first 3 every week if you needed to, with Simpson covering if Jones is rested, I'd concentrate on your mids and forwards.
