Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Javier Hernandez is expected to be sidelined for the next four weeks with an ankle injury.

The Mexican was subbed off early in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa this evening and was stretchered from the proceedings after a lengthy delay. His goals have been crucial to the champions of late, with Hernandez scoring 3 of United’s 4 goals prior to the Villa match.

Post-match, the United boss rued the loss of his in-form striker and mulled over options for what will be a busy Christmas period:

I think it is torn ligaments in the ankle and he’ll be out for four weeks. We are having a bad time with injuries at the moment but that is why we have a strong squad. Danny Welbeck is fit again and fortunately he got 15 minutes tonight which is good. He has not had a lot of football recently which is something I have to consider. But Nani did alright through the middle and Valencia did very well for us when he came on, he was excellent. So I have some options up front. We may have Berbatov fit for Wednesday also, but we are getting our fair share of injuries at the moment.

The mention of Nani as a possibility in the central role is particularly intriguing. With Wayne Rooney’s run of goalless games now stretching to eight league fixtures on the back of tonight’s game, United are relying on their defence to ensure victories right now.

They have now ground out four 1-0 wins in the last five games since the return of Nemanja Vidic and have scored more than one goal just once in their last nine games but with a run of fixtures that includes (WOL, qpr, ful, WIG, BLA) look ripe for investment.

Welbeck, at 6.6, would be the most obvious bargain but with Fergie urging caution over his game time, the Fantasy options are low on the ground right now up front, with defence perhaps looking the most viable source of points.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Have you seen the guy who is top overall Jackoff?
He's made 7 transfers all season and his team looks ok but nothing super! Yet he's not far off 1000 points already?!

He's not even had one score below 50.

Thing is though, with 2.6 million players, and a realistic player selection pool of maybe a hundred, pure chance alone would predict that someone out there would have near enough the perfect team selection and captain pick every week. Monkies / typewriters / shakespeare kind of thing

On a long term basis, it definitely is a game of skill, ie when you see guys consistently finishing top 10k every year or whatever. But to win the thing or come top 50 you're going to need to have a slice of good fortune now and again.......

Do it. Dont know whats happened but Bale is a different player of late. Of course VdV is usually fantasy gold, but he's not better than Bale's hauls and the extra money can be well spent

Plus Bale is a machine and plays pretty much every minute of every game. VdV can do his hammy with a vigorous sneeze.

Yeah, he's a machine until you start seeing the high-tech training tape on his thighs, or until Wilko or Shawcrizzle make that oh so subtle clip of his heel on the late challenge.

Can you tell I don't have Bale...not getting burned again...the 6 straight 2 pointers will come soon. Enjoyy it while it lasts.

Are you getting a sore back? You know, bent over with your head in the sand/up VdV's arse? I'm fed up with VdV. He'll be lucky to play two thirds of the game time of Bale over winter and they're both on form.

Incidentally, I thought Bale's football boot tribute was rather tacky today though.

You might be right, he's screwed me both ways between last year and this one...but I've found I enjoy him the most when I don't expect much from him. I actually dispise him as a player...lazy, hot wife, flexibility of Margaret Thatcher, under achiever. But no matter how small his heatmap is, he always seems to come up smelling like roses. I have no qualms about dealing him, but it wouldn't be for Bale.

It feels like you're pushing the panic button...

What do you do when teams (ie; Stoke City) start forcing him inside on his not-so-fabled right foot and he has to watch Mods, a healthy VDV and Ade do their thing. Does Paddy Power do odds on whether Stoke will injure him???

This was the best of both worlds for me...Harry hoodwinked us into thinking he would get a good run-out. I honestly think they intended to give him 50ish minutes in a tight one. The panic sellers got the last laugh with that one. I'm sure the VDV owners will be happy as the Bale owners sell their kids (and probably BAE or Walker in the end) to get VDV back when the 2's and the thigh tape come out.

    2) Sturridge, balotelli owners, thank the fpl gods for they have smiled upon you

    3) hernandez owners, sucks to be you (us)

    4) People on this website who constantly give advice and have been preaching against bale, stop posting advice for a while

    5) How does swansea keep a cs against liverpool and give up four against blackburn

    6) didn't see the west brom game, but F*CK brunt, complete and utter sh*t every time I watch him play, pissed at myself for keeping him so long (Is he seriously captain???)

    7) Newcastle losing staylor for season... collocini injured... what does this mean for their cs potential

What many people overlook as regards Bale, is the factor which has created his amazing form of late. That is the directly related to the quality and style of Spurs football at present. He is allowed to roam and run into space created by players around him, then he is much more than a handful.

I would say he created space for the others early on by reputation alone. And this brought on their cracking form, now they've adjusted and this leaves him the space that Arry said he would have (whilst sitting in his Range of course)...

      5) Simple, Yakubu > Suarez..ha

With Saylor and Colo out I see Newcaslte keeping no cleanies regardless of fixtures. Raylor, despite his high FF scores thus far, is an awful defender (as was demonstrated by Sturridge today), Perch is gash and Santon not even had one EPL game to be up to speed

Krul is good but he cant work miracles. Its a sad day, but I think I'm clearing out Ryan's locker tonight and giving him a handshake and the "all the best" chat tomorrow.....

If anything his poaching ass has stunted their team growth (not to mention injuries of course) Now with people coming healthy SAF can stuff the front 6 with versatile skill players that hold the ball up independently without necessarily going backwards.

Wrong. Manamongst is spot on. With Chico in the team, United are less fluid and more structured. Of course Carrick replacing Cleverley adds to this, but with Welbeck far more comfortable coming deep and being able to link the play, United could put a few past Wolves next week.

and like a 88" flatscreen SAF has to see this. I wasn't surprised to see Valencia come on at all. SF is just as tired of circling the wagons as we are. He has to make sure Danny is 100%, and bringing him on at the drop of an unexpected injury is not enough time to warm and straight foolish. 18 minutes is just about right...hopefully for my FF plans he doesn't suffer a setback...My fragile little British Adebayor. And you're certainly right about Carrick, I foolishly left his dead-weight ass off...he exacerbated the "less fluid and more structured".

He wasn't there for much of their hot form ("rested", "tired" my ass SAF wanted a good look with Danny in the mix). Remember SAF was adamant about changing their style of play to something that could compete with barca. Chico has definitely affected the game style but he wasn't the cause of the demise from their intentions. He just dragged them down the slippery slope: inconsistent defensive line..is it high or low medium (the problem with his defensive rotation style (see Stoke), injuries; Young, Clev and Anderson getting hurt didn't help. People discount the effect of Danny Welbeck...box-to-box ability IMO (if he wasn't muscularly fragile), was being primed to cover the AM that Rooney languished in when he got hurt.

Insert poacher and you have tofu expectations

What are you talking about? Hernandez started in both the Arsenal and Bolton games..
Against City, he didn't start..and look what happened - then he came on and assisted, something that none of the other United players could do.
Vidic came back after the City game, you can't tell me Chicharito is the one that changed the way United were playing.

No, he doesn't help. It's clear, I also named a couple of other important factors namely defense rotations that don't have a plan as far as the line they play. Injuries, and the personnel not sharing the same scheme. Also lets look at those games...He might as well ot even played against Tot...or Arsenal (what'd he get like 50+ minutes?). And Bolton? Come on man, a poacher's delight, I would think they could get 5 past Bolton in the old style...certainly factored in that being the game SAF decided to actually feature him wouldn't you agree? From that point on (if you watched the Chelsea match carefully) the buyers remorse creeps in. And to reference the Citeh match is like hearing Marc Tierney's mother defend Norwich's honor by pointing to her son's assist against a slack Clichy. He had no real impact on that ass straffing. You'll no doubt be selling, he certainly screwed up his poaching window. He's no Kobe Bryant, he only makes lay-ups when they pass him the rock...

But on a football perspective, his returns should decrease each season until he acquires more tricks/skills. You will not get 20 goals like that just poaching...it's too easy to scout, speed, hard work and desire only get you so far. Returns will diminish.

    Who would you ditch out of;
Brown - Rotates perfectly with Newcastle
Simpson - see above, although with injuries they may not keep many cleanies, Tiote back soon though which won't hurt
Wilkinson - Decent rotation with Newcastle, but even at home they look poor
N.Taylor - immense at home, have Vorm already though, decent rotation and i'll only have to play one of Simpson/Brown/Naylor so won't have to play him away.
    Thinking Wilkinson at the moment.

To be honest, f*ck rotation, think in two's, as in, 'let me field at least two strong contenders'. Save yourself some pain and deal Brown, they won't even keep it clean against Blackburn...count on that. Then you can sit Wilko against Tot (Enrique and one more). If you can use that (imminent) hernandez-downgrade cash for a god cause in your defense. I know you've been tracking Fulham defenders (and no, don't know why Hughes was benched last week.) But something tells me you're all over Verm...sort it man.

              2. Enrique has just as good fixtures
              3. Liverpool have conceded least amount of goals in the league

Clean sheets are rare these days. I'd say best overall defenders are -

      Richards - for assists
Jones - Best value entry into Man U for probably best clean sheet potential
Verm / Baines - for goals

Debatable whether all three of them is maybe overkill in defence
