[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

Differentials are by nature a risky investment, but once the December fixtures start coming thick and fast, not even the likes of Robin Van Persie are guaranteed a start. With a solid bench being a crucial factor to succeeding over the Christmas period, the Scout Selection Committee have been debating all week about the best budget options to bolster our Fantasy squads and with so many decent alternatives on offer we even managed to settle on an entirely Wigan-less selection this week……

Morten Gamst Pedersen

Following Paul Robinson’s ‘Watchlist’ article and Yakubu’s selection on the Scout Picks bench, we’re continuing our Blackburn love-in by opting for former Fantasy favourite Morten Gamst Pedersen (or MGP as he’s affectionately known around these parts) as our differential pick of the week.

Blackburn’s fixtures are about as good as you’re going to see all season. Three home games in the next four starting with the visit of Swansea this weekend makes them very difficult to ignore, and although their defence has let them down badly this season, there are still several bargains to be had amongst their attacking players.

Being consistently the highest ranked Blackburn midfielder on our Members ICT Index, and the fact he takes most of their direct free kicks and corners (of which MGP’s unique tactic of playing it to himself resulted in their goal against Wigan), the Norwegian international should prove to be a solid investment over the coming weeks. Who knows, with Scott Dann and Chris Samba back in the side, Blackburn may even win a game or two.

Hatem Ben Arfa

Playing as a withdrawn striker in place of the injured Leon Best, Hatem Ben Arfa has looked very promising since his return from injury and with Newcastle approaching their best run of fixtures of the season so far, the French star could prove to be a bargain. Best has been confirmed as fit for this weekend’s game against Chelsea, but Newcastle will be expected to stick to the formation that served them so well at Old Trafford last week. With Jonas Gutierrez suspended then a shift to the wing is also a possibility but, regardless of where he plays, Ben Arfa looks capable of bringing home the points.

Chelsea at home isn’t the easiest fixture but there has probably never been a better time to face Villas-Boas’ men. While the Londoners are still reeling from their third defeat in four games against Liverpool on Tuesday, Newcastle are riding a wave of confidence summed up quite optimistically by Ben Arfa’s recent claims that they were going to win the league (Paddy Power will give you 300-1 if you fancy that one by the way!). Fixtures ease up considerably after this with Norwich, Swansea, West Brom and Bolton in the next four but with a current ownership of 1.0% and priced at just 5.4, it could be worth jumping on board a week early.

Nicky Shorey

Clean sheets have been notoriously hard to come by this season so when looking for a budget defender, a decent chance of an attacking return is essential. Under Roy Hodgson this season, not only are West Brom looking a lot more solid at the back, but Nicky Shorey has been a constant threat on the break. His recent spell on the bench raises a few concerns about his long term role in the side, but it’s hard to see him being dropped again after his last two performances, and priced at just 4.5 he looks the pick of the West Brom defenders right now.

The stats backs this up; Shorey has been the most creative defender on show over the last two gameweeks, surpassing even Everton’s Leighton Baines when it comes to supplying opportunities and crosses.

Cheers Supersham. 🙂 I would look to move Warnock, Fixtures and team not firing and then Ferguson for cheap playing mid, as New Year approaches rotations and bans I think will eat into our benches and even a couple of points will be worth having. Your team is good to go other than those imo.

Not really. Lampard hasn't started this season only when he played a EPL game and then a CL game in midweek. VDV wasn't even playing Europa. Now that that's over and they're both only focusing on the prem, Lampard will definitely get more game this.

Spurs also didn't have ade last year, so VDV was more of a necessity and couldn't be rotated.

Adebayor has nothing to do with this, he is there for Pavlyuchenko/Crouch not VDV.
Lampard was "rested" for a bloody Carling Cup match, that proves he isn't a safe option.
Chelsea play way better without Lampard there (see Wolves first hour/Swansea game/Manchester second half)
Almost every Chelsea fan I know or have read say they want him benched..

You can point to isolated examples, just like I can (see QPR when they had nine men, see Bolton, etc). If you actually looked at game this stats, you'd see that lampard has played 90 mins in 10/13 games. VDV has NOT played 90 mins in 10/13 games. Pretty easy to see who gets more game time, either through being rested or injury. This situation will only be compounded during the christmas schedule.

What do you mean see QPR/Bolton - you mean when Lampard got a hat trick against the worst defence in the league (who VDV is up against this week) and then went on to score 1 point against QPR (and VDV managed 10) ? 😕
If you actually watched football instead of just look at points scored, you'd realised Chelsea play better without Lampard, and that he is clearly at risk of being dropped again...
The fact is, VDV has better fixtures, has never been 'dropped' unlike Lampard, and he is also cheaper..

If you watched football, you'd realise that lampard played fantastically against QPR when they were playing 9 vs 11. Look beyond points scored every week and actually watch games. Lampard adds a lot to Chelsea's midfield, and this shows in his playing time.

You can't ignore a congested schedule in the EPL, and the likelihood of VDV being rested, especially with Defoe pushing. Throw in suspect hamstrings, and you aren't going to see him playing games every 3 days.

Hope you're always this optimistic though. Gives the rest of us a better chance.

Looking at another cheap differential, needing to (finally) get rid of Cleverly.

David Edwards. Only 4.9, goal, assist and BAP in last 3 games. Seems a certain starter. 3 decent home games in the next 4.

    Thoughts?

I've got Evans as well. I can't seem to get rid of him without a hit. I'd say get Baines. Forget Suarez 'till he does something other than fall over a lot and starts scoring goals. Don't be fooled by his fixtures either he had NOR, wba, SWA earlier and failed.

Right, can't make up my mind this morning - here's my team:
    Vorm
    Enrique, Jones, McCauley
    Silva, Bale, Sinclair, O'Hara
    Sturridge, Suarez, RVP

Subs: e Laet, R Taylor, Moses

Now do I drop Suarez for Adebayor and also take a 4 point hit to get rid of De Laet for Walker?

Suarez hasn't scored for a while but he does have a good run of fixtures coming up.

    Any help is appreciated 🙂

i think your team is looking decent enough for this GW

it might be worth saving your transfer

as you can field 4 defs (Enrique, Jones, McCauley, R Taylor) a -4 point hit has no value imo, in fact it is throwing away points

your only decision is suarez > ade but with vdv back and pools run of good fixtures i would be tempted to do nothing and re-assess next GW

I agree the "Adebayor doesn't score when VDV plays" theory is bogus.

"Adebayor doesn't score as much when VDV plays," now that may have some legs. Just think play tends to go through VDV when he's there (4, 10, 8, 10, 15, 10, 2 and 3 in their shared matches) whereas when he's out or not at 100% Ade becomes more involved.

The VDV factor is why I switched the captaincy from Ade to RVP. Still think he'll score, just not more than Robin.

I can see the argument for that Finnish, what normally happens is people just slip further back. VDV is just back from injury and Aguero from an hour plus CL game and he rarely gets the full game. Neither are bad choices just risky. I would take those chances in March if you need to and hope your peripheral players make you up the points until then.

don't like it that much. too much money tied up in evra. not sure if assou ekotto/tott defense will score. obviously ferguson needs to go with lots of upcoming rotations. and not really sure if you want rooney and nani. too much money tied up in a united attack that hasn't been scoring well. especially since you are lacking city and tottenham attacking coverage.

plus the fact that you have only one heavy hitter in mid and only two in attack. and wouldnt really consider evra and assou ekotto to be heavy hitters in the back.

just my two cents. hope this helps
