Harry Redknapp reveals he’ll continue to protect Rafael Van der Vaart’s problematic hamstring. Phil Jones admits he’s happy to play anywhere for Man United, while Robin Van Persie is rested for Arsenal’s trip to Olympiacos this week.

Harry Redknapp has given Fantasy managers plenty to ponder after admitting he will continue to be cautious over the Dutchman’s ongoing hamstring problem. Van der Vaart was handed a late second half sub role in the 3-0 win over Bolton, with Jermain Defoe vindicating his manager’s decision with a goal and assist in the stroll. With a busy upcoming Christmas schedule on the cards, Redknapp revealed Defoe’s form made the decision a less-difficult one than anticipated:

He’s disappointed, obviously, but he took it okay. It was a hard decision. I just felt the little man (Defoe) is on fire so I stuck with him. I like Rafa, he’s a great player, a good pro, but he keeps getting hamstrings. You’ve just got to be careful he doesn’t tear it and we lose him for six weeks.

Arsene Wenger gave Robin Van Persie’s Fantasy owners a boost this afternoon after omitting his skipper from the Champions League trip to Olympiacos. With the Gunners already through as group winners, Wenger can afford to rest and rotate ahead of the weekend league game against Everton. Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Gervinho and Mikel Arteta were also amongst the names left behind.

Having missed the previous week’s home clash with Newcastle, Phil Jones came straight back into the Man United starting lineup at Aston Villa with a bang, scoring the game’s only goal. Jones’ versatility is making him a major Fantasy asset so far this season, with the Newcastle game his only league absence and the player admits he doesn’t mind where Sir Alex Ferguson fields him at the moment:

I enjoy playing anywhere. I enjoy playing football, so wherever I am asked to play I will play. If the manager asks me to play right-back, centre-back or midfield, I will go and do a job there. I don’t think it really matters at the moment that I am cementing a spot in a certain position because I am still young. Hopefully as my career progresses that will happen.

Man City coach David Platt reckons the new summer additions mean it’s impossible for the side to produce the same type of defensive displays they have managed in the past. City have failed to return a clean sheet in seven successive league games now- compare that to last season, when Joe Hart picked up the Golden Gloves award for 18 clean sheets. Platt admits it’s no longer in their makeup to do so:

When we beat Spurs at White Hart Lane and United went out and put eight past Arsenal, Roberto told the players that we can’t take our foot off the pedal. We should go on and keep scoring. Last year we did not have the characteristics of the players that we do now. What Roberto has done this year is that he has gone on and added to it with Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri. Edin Dzeko also came in during January. We have got the type of players on the field which mean we cannot actually play defensively because of the characteristics of the players. We don’t really have a choice.

Alan Pardew is hoping to accelerate Mike Williamson’s return to action due to the number of injuries currently affecting the Newcastle defence. With Steven Taylor possibly out for the season and Fabricio Coloccini suffering from a thigh problem, Pardew confirmed that James Perch will start at Norwich this weekend as he looks to patch up his threadbare back-four, but admitted Williamson is not yet ready to return to the first-team fray just yet:

He’s going to need a lot of work on the training ground to get himself up to speed, but we might have to accelerate that. He’s not that close – he’s definitely not playing at Norwich, or maybe the one after that. We’re going to have to see if we can speed him up a bit.

Alex McLeish has called for Charles N’Zogbia to step up in performance after fining and dropping the player for a breach of club discipline at the weekend. N’Zogbia failed to report for treatment in the lead up to Saturday’s home game with Man United and Big Eck admits he need an improvement from the former Latics winger, with Villa recording a single win in their last seven fixtures:

He has to take it on the chin and show us the great player he can be. There are no grudges. I just want to see the boy go to another level. I think he can improve on what he has done before. We are looking to guys like Charles to come to the fore. Charles has got to be receptive and realise I want to help him and every single player at this club because we need all the help we can get.

Roy Hodgson kept with his recent 4-4-1-1 formation for the trip to QPR, despite the loss of Zoltan Gera. Graham Dorrans stepped into the role “in the hole”, tucking in behind Shane Long for the Loftus Road encounter and has designs on keeping his place in the Baggies first XI ahead of this weekend’s home clash with Wigan.

Wolves’ win over Sunderland saw Mick McCarthy revert to a 4-4-2 once again, with Jamie O’Hara moving back into a central midfield role. Steven Fletcher and Kevin Doyle led the line and although O’Hara picked up a somewhat contentious assist, his attacking threat was once again reduced from a less-advanced position. With home games against Stoke and Norwich to follow next weekend’s trip to Old Trafford, O’Hara’s Fantasy owners will be desperate for a change of heart from Big Mick.

Robert Huth returned to the centre of defence for only the third time this season and reminded Tony Pulis of his potential at both ends of the pitch. Pulis has mainly fielded the German at right-back this term but picked Jonathan Woodgate at full-back for the trip to Everton, moving Huth back into the heart of the back-four. Huth’s match-winner at Goodison, combined with Stoke’s first clean sheet since gameweek 8, will have given his manager plenty food for thought ahead of the upcoming home clash with Spurs. Pulis also revealed that Thomas Sorensen suffered only mild concussion after being taken from the field of play in the seventy-second minute.

Jose Bosingwa missed training today ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Valencia due to an adductor strain. The right-back has fallen out of favour and with Andre Villas-Boas’ side picking up 3 clean sheets in four league games since his omission from the first team, was unlikely to play anyway, with the London club requiring a goalless draw or win to ensure qualification for the knockout stages.

Owen Coyle has confirmed Bolton will appeal the red card that saw Gary Cahill depart the proceedings in the first half at Tottenham on Saturday. The decision of Stuart Attwell to dismiss the centre half left many baffled, with Cahill deemed to have denied Scott Parker a clear goalscoring opportunity despite the Spurs midfielder being more than forty yards from goal. Cahill will currently miss the weekend clash against Aston Villa but his manager is confident the FA will overturn a decision he described as “bemusing”.

From previous article, got mixed responses so wouldn't mind a further opinion:

Is this worth an 8 pointer?

    Walters & Aguero – Nani & Ba

Already have Silva for City cover and have no other United forwards.

no that's like swapping two lumps of quite good things for another two lumps of quite good things.

Walters is at home and on pens, Aguero can score anywhere, anytime. Nani has hardly set the world alight with his pts recently. Ba is good...but I wouldn't get him for a pts hit. If you are that desparate to get him swap him for Ageuro.

        All good points, thanks.

I am considering him for Aguero, did you mean Ade?

It just seems like hits are paying off more this year, because if you get someone like Nani who is likely to score and assist at home to Wolves, you're also virtually guaranteed 3 baps, which pays for the hit.

Yeah I can see the logic here, but if you look at the ICT index he's actually below people like Sess, Larrson, Sinclair, Ramsey etc across the whole season and the last 4 weeks, so I'm not that desperate to keep him.

He's looked decent enough for someone playing in a side stabalising themselves with 1-0 wins, but obviously his recent returns have been disappointing (I should know, had him since GW7...). One thing is for sure, however, and that's that when United start scoring again, Nani will rack up points. He's that kind of player.

United's fixtures are too hard to ignore and since Hernandez is injured and Rooney has zero goal-scoring form, Nani is the best of a bad bunch of potential FPL options.

There is also the possibility he could play in behind Rooney by the sounds of things although I wouldn't bank on that idea. Might be worth a Technical Area article, we haven't had one of those in a long time.

Kaz, my reply to similar question on previous post... it still stands.

Yeah Jimnastics, I’m a big fan of Studge, have been among his biggest champions on here (as far as I can tell, anyway) and my opinion stands – excellent value and Chelski’s most dangerous-looking and effective forward this season. For me he stays.

You (and perhaps I) might consider Ba in for Ade. Ade is a controversial selection because he’ll play most Prem games and clearly has the ability to score big. Yet as we’ve seen perfectly illustrated over the last three GWs, he is far from clinical at the moment. I flagged up after the Villa/WBrom wins (2x goals in each for Ade) that he could and should have had 7-8 goals, and Sat’s finishing against Bolton was similarly slack.

On form, Ba looks the more clinical of the two, IMO, right now, although he clearly have to consider the number of chances NEW/Tott will create. I will probably stick with Ade for now (I have other pressing transfer business to attend to) but will watch with interest over the next 3-4 GWs.

      Hope that helps. 🙂

Droopy has renowned personnel skills, and I read these comments as merely the latest in a long, long line of similar statements aimed at building up confidence in various players. Jan's round the corner and Droopy doesn't want shock transfer requests from either DVD or Defoe (or from any of his regulars).

Walters at home can not be written off completely. I think that is why I am shipping Royston this week instead of Mr. Walters.

Walters is one of those better at home than away players. Makes decisions about him simple. At home play him, always the chance of a penalty and spurs are not known for their clean sheets.

I have him and will play him this coming game week.

Whats happened to N'Zogbia this season after his heroics for Wigan last year? Is it just McLeish tactics don't suit him or has he been injured?

Not sure if that has been mentioned but apparently his had a fall out there too, didnt turn up for sum treatment. Hence him being dropped against United.

He's lazy, off form and wasn't being played in his favoured position in a rubbish Villa team. Once he decides he wants a move away from Villa Park and starts playing he'll be worth putting in your team.

Yeah I think he was so good at Wigan because he was the main man with everything going through him and he's clearly not getting that freedom at Villa.

afternoon everyone, hope you're alright - got a vital head to head game this week against my main rival (was 7 points behind, but managed to reduce the lead down to a solitary point), i would really appreciate some help with my team as i'm all out of ideas at the moment:-

    my team:
    vorm
    brown / jones / enrique
    (vc)vdv / walters / silva / nani
    (c)rvp / ade / sturridge

    krul / b.johnson / r.taylor / wilko

1 free transfer - 1.2 mil in the bank

    his team:

    vorm
    kompany / jones / enrique
    pilks / ramsey / bale / mata / silva
    gabbi / rvp

    ruddy / gabbidon / simpson / vellios

i can see his team winning comfortably with fortunate fixtures for his players, such as: gabbi (cahill/wheater suspended) and pilks (coloccini/taylor injured) >>> against unfortunate fixtures for my players, such as: walters (i expect spurs to dominate against stoke) and brown (playing a free-scoring blackburn side).

anyone out there got any advice or ideas on how to make this week respectable for me lol? - cheers in advance

    What's people's thoughts on Henderson(LIV) for £6.1M?

Is he worth it or is he just Liverpool coverage for coverage sake - they have QPR(h) next week?

Will he start and play 90mins with Lucas now injured?

Really need help with my team, dont think ive had it looking so bad, got two free transfers and thinking about taking a hit to sort it.

    Vorm, Given
    Lescott, Saylor, Caulker, Enrique, Brown
    VDV, Silva, Ramsey, SInclair, Moses
    RVP, Ade, Bendtner

Think I could happily get rid of half the team but i want to hang for the Jan wildcard but could do 4/8pt hit, any ideas?

Ba is a big improvement on Bendtner.
Saylor's out for the season so he's your priority transfer and a Fulham defender for £3.9m is such a bargain and frees up money to deal with the rest of your crap team, plus Fulham play Swansea this weekend.

The only issue really is your defence. Bendtner is worth a go this week if you still have him, three of your mids are fine, no need for a big hit. I'd just go Lescott & Staylor out and get one of Jones/Komp/Richards and a 5.0ish option like BAE. Even then, you only need take out Lescott this week and play him along with Enrique/Brown and avoid a hit.

Am I right when I expect a load of goals and assists in Man.City vs.Chelsey?

Attackers on both sides can score huge, since none of the teams really plays any defense.

    Anyone agree with me?

If Chelsea lose their title challenge is practically over.
City will be desperate to keep their unbeaten record intact.

I'd say it'll be a cagey enough match with both desperate not to lose. 1 goal victory for Chelsea or a draw.

Wouldn't captain anyone there - RVP/Rooney usual candidates.

Luiz is out so Bosingwa RB with Ivanovic CB I guess.

      I can see 2-2.

I wouldn't captain either, but 2-2 or 3-2 can be expecting.

Therefore it is not bad having Silva, Mata, Sturidge or Aguero(or benching them), although it is a bad fixture. But I would not play defenders in this game.

+1. I'd play the attackers and bench the defenders.

Even if City get a CS - 1 extra point for Silva. Chelsea CS, 1 pt for Mata.

The right transfers could hugely pay off.. In the last 9 games of Season 2009-10, I took 8pts hits every week and got an average of 84 points per week.

The problem is ... we don't know if we make the right transfer.. 🙂
