Winter approaches and the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game heads into hibernation in a couple of days. For now, though, we’ve one last Watchlist to rally up ahead of Matchday Six and the closing of the group stages…

European Fantasy managers will need to have plenty of salt in reserve to sprinkle over our choices because, as warned in last week’s “Survival Guide”, things can get messy in the final round of games.

Defensive choices have proven to be notoriously tricky in the UCL format and the final Matchday hurdle will likely only make it even more difficult. Data from the last two seasons, unsurprisingly, shows that sides tend to keep less clean sheets in the final weeks as teams either go for broke or have less to worry about.

The Matchday averages of 10 clean sheets over the first five rounds of the two previous seasons (09/10 and 10/11) dropped down to 6 and 7 shut-outs respectively, in the the sixth and final game of the group stages. So, if our evidence is anything to go by, then our average of 9.6 clean sheets per Matchday this season would seem to see us with a similar drop in returns.

What we’re trying to get at here is that it is more difficult than ever to choose the stern defences this week. Our backline options, as a result, are all going to be chosen with their attacking ideals in mind, then…

Manchester United have recently shored up their defence and began to plough through the winter with single goal victories. Another 1-0 away at Basel will see Fergie’s outfit in the knockout stages and make David De Gea a sound inclusion in Fantasy squads.

David Luiz gets a spot for entertainment value as much as anything else. With a domestic suspension ruling him out of Chelsea’s tie against Man City next week and Alex somewhat ostracised from first-team matters after handing in a transfer request, we can expect to see him gallivanting goalward as Chelsea push for a win over Valencia tomorrow.

Barcelona will look to mix up their squad where they can and the relatively cheap Adriano will likely be given plenty of attacking license out wide -in the same vein as Dani Alves- for the Champions League holders. Others we’re considering include the likes of Jan Vertonghen of Ajax and Lille’s right-back Mathieu Debuchy.

A win at home to Trabzonspor will see Lille through to the knockout stages. The task before them is simple; while we’d love to add Joe Cole to the aforementioned defender, we’ll play our hand a little safer with the selection of wing wonder Eden Hazard instead.

Man City and Chelsea need to win in midweek to stand a chance of qualification- in City’s case that even that might not be enough. Given that they’ll have to go for broke, the Spanish wizardry of both David Silva and Juan Mata will be crucial in both sides’ respective efforts to remain in Europe’s top competition. With Bayern affected by a flu bug, City will fancy their chances- Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos have been left at home, while Mario Gomez and Thomas Mueller are both doubts.

We expect Real Madrid will be putting out a much changed side for their trip to Ajax tomorrow evening. At £56m on the transfer market Kaka is still the third most expensive player in the history of football and yet stands a strong chance of being one of Mourinho’s main men in this dead rubber of a fixture in Holland. Not bad if you can afford it.

The FC APOEL story has been a truly astounding one. They’re already confirmed as one of the final 16 squads in the Champions League but with an unbeaten record and a chance to top their group there’s still plenty left to play for. The comparatively cheap (just 4.7) Gustavo Manduca is our man to back in Cyprus.

With Manchester United heading to Basel needing a result of some sort it means that Fergie can’t really use this midweek to rest any of his key players. With Javier Hernandez sidelined at Aston Villa last weekend this leaves Wayne Rooney with a more secure spot than otherwise expected. With only 2 goals away to Galati in the last two and a half months it’s time our boy got back on the scoresheet.

Napoli’s victory over Manchester City has put their qualification fate in their own hands. A trip to Villarreal last season saw them knocked out of the Europa League but we envisage a different result as, this time around, they face a much poorer Villarreal side with nothing to play for. Edinson Cavani, coming off two goals at the weekend, should be the man to lead his side to victory.

Valencia likely need at least a score draw at Stamford Bridge tonight if they want to continue their Champions League adventure. Getting a goal against Chelsea these days isn’t the hardest task in the world, and we’re backing Roberto Soldado to do just that.

We’ve already stockpiled from defence and midfield, but if you’re fond of some Gallic flair, why not consider adding another player from Lille into the mix? Moussa Sow will be leading from the front and has the strongest chance of all at grabbing the goals required to see the French champions through.

If you need a budget striker, then reigning European Champions Barcelona will provide an unlikely outlet. With top spot guaranteed, Pep Guardiola will hopefully give youngster Isaac Cuenca another chance in his starting line-up. We’ll have the team-sheets to confirm any issues but at just 4.5 and at home to BATE he could prove to be a handsome Matchday Six gamble.

Please note that deadline for your UEFA Fantasy Champions League team selection will be at 20:30 CET today. This will mean that, as pointed out in last week’s Survival Guide, European Fantasy Managers should have Tuesday’s team-sheets to work with before closing.

      Rooney - Mainly for penalties
Cavani - Outstanding form and World Class
My doubt remains between Pedro and Hulk because Hulk can take any opponent but Zenit are pretty tight at the back(plus qualification pressure), Pedro on the other hand has no pressure but will he play?

Good point about pens. And yeah I think Cavani is my first choice, goal machine.

Only just seen that Benfica are virtually through. Maybe go Pedro then switch to Hulk if he's not in the Barca line up?

I forgot to mention Soldado in my first post too...

Rooney, Sow and Pedro for me

Don't think there will be lots of goals in the Napoli game, and Porto seems to struggle getting forward this year. (Although Hulk has delivered so far)

And I think Napoli could smash Villareal who have nothing to play for and are in poor form.

    Champs league analysis

    Group A
Bayern are through with no need to worry against City. Villarreal are out nothing to play for but pride against a Napoli side who need a win. City Need to overcome the German giants at the Ethiad to stand any chance.

    Group B
Wide open, all teams bar Inter need a win for 2nd-4th spot. CSKA travel to Italy and currently occupy 4th spot with 5 points. Its all or nothing for Lille at home to Trazponsor.

    Group C
Looks like Benfica top the group with Gatali finishing off bottom. United and Basel fight it out for 2nd spot with United only needing a point

    Group D
Real are through and play Ajax in the final game and Lyon travel to Croatia. This could be tight Ajax are on 7 points Lyon on 4. Their head to heads are even so will come down to goal difference. Lyon need a 7 goal swing to qualify for the knock out stages.

    Group E
Leverkusen are all but through and Chelsea are lever on points with valenica for the second spot. The first tie finished 1-1 in Spain. So Chelsea need either a 0-0 or a home win to qualify.

    Group F
Arsenal tie up top spot. With Marsaille on 7 points, Olymiakos on 6 and Dortmund on 4. Marsialle play Dortmund in Germany with the tie in France finishing 3-0 to the hosts. Olympiakos need something if they are to guarantee the continuation of European football into the new year. Dortmund need to beat Marsaille 3-0 or better to finish above them.

    Group G
Apoel (unbelievably) qualify regardless of results this week. Shaktar are bottom regardless. It’s a fight between Porto and Zenit for the remaining spot with Porto needing to win a draw will not do in Portugal.

    Group H
Barecelona need to beat BATE 9-0 to claim the highest win margin in Champions League match history.

thats the way ive always played it, 2 very cheap midfielders that rotate and get you 2-6pts each week, just frees up funds

not many others seem to do that on here tho

Yeah well I've had no luck with 6.5 ish midfielders so far but have had success with defenders and strikers so I may be tempted by that.

Decent move me thinks. Fulham seem to be getting themselves sorted, and although there's a few tricky fixtures on the horizon, they've shown by drawing with Man City and at Arsenal, by beating Liverpool, and by tearing Spurs apart (but somehow not scoring) that they can compete with almost anyone on their day.

And if they, then he'll pick up a few save points...

    Vorm, Given

    SIlva, VDV, Bale, Drenthe, Dyer
    Kun, Adebayor, Ba

    45 Points 🙁 Gameweek 14
    821 Season

    Thinking:

    Given (out) - Ruddy (in)
    Shawcross (out) Barnett (in)

    Then

Drenthe (out) - 8.5 to spend (Cahil, Dempsey, Toure, etc.)

Form is king. Bale has it. vdV has injury issues. My answer: YES

Not too sure which defender to ditch. Thoughts: O'Neill will get Sunderland tighter defensively which will benefit Brown owners, but for now they're a bit of a liability...

I think Jags is better value for pts in that eve team than Baines and the addition of Mata would give you a very strong mid. Vermaelen for 6.8 will prove to be good value also especially when compared to what you can get in midfield for that price. Took a look at dempsey last week but am not sold on him. Vermaelen yes, but not with Dempsey. I would go with option 1).

I've done 5 trannies, reckon it's worth the value hits as you only need 2 defenders in the game and can easily leave a couple of "blanks" in your team in the cup stage.

Not sure it isn't a little too back heavy (I know that's the point) - I think Ivanovic could be a good shout - don't see rotation in his future. Also how about Kompany? Offers decent value and should beat rotation? I like the idea but would prefer

Yeah good point. I don't know unless you have got your team value up to 110 by then (possible) then I think you need to chose between doubling on Man U or having Chelsea cover and then have a defensive cheapy and a more expensive midfielder

Tempted too Tosey, They aren't rotation threat as much as the outfield players, have great fixtures in that period and you have your wildcard to sort that out. I will have at least 4 of them too.

I will have Jones, Evra/ Vidic, Vermy, Terry and one 4.0 defender. I say go for it, Only tempting mids are Silva and Bale atm
