Winter approaches and the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game heads into hibernation in a couple of days. For now, though, we’ve one last Watchlist to rally up ahead of Matchday Six and the closing of the group stages…

European Fantasy managers will need to have plenty of salt in reserve to sprinkle over our choices because, as warned in last week’s “Survival Guide”, things can get messy in the final round of games.

Defensive choices have proven to be notoriously tricky in the UCL format and the final Matchday hurdle will likely only make it even more difficult. Data from the last two seasons, unsurprisingly, shows that sides tend to keep less clean sheets in the final weeks as teams either go for broke or have less to worry about.

The Matchday averages of 10 clean sheets over the first five rounds of the two previous seasons (09/10 and 10/11) dropped down to 6 and 7 shut-outs respectively, in the the sixth and final game of the group stages. So, if our evidence is anything to go by, then our average of 9.6 clean sheets per Matchday this season would seem to see us with a similar drop in returns.

What we’re trying to get at here is that it is more difficult than ever to choose the stern defences this week. Our backline options, as a result, are all going to be chosen with their attacking ideals in mind, then…

Manchester United have recently shored up their defence and began to plough through the winter with single goal victories. Another 1-0 away at Basel will see Fergie’s outfit in the knockout stages and make David De Gea a sound inclusion in Fantasy squads.

David Luiz gets a spot for entertainment value as much as anything else. With a domestic suspension ruling him out of Chelsea’s tie against Man City next week and Alex somewhat ostracised from first-team matters after handing in a transfer request, we can expect to see him gallivanting goalward as Chelsea push for a win over Valencia tomorrow.

Barcelona will look to mix up their squad where they can and the relatively cheap Adriano will likely be given plenty of attacking license out wide -in the same vein as Dani Alves- for the Champions League holders. Others we’re considering include the likes of Jan Vertonghen of Ajax and Lille’s right-back Mathieu Debuchy.

A win at home to Trabzonspor will see Lille through to the knockout stages. The task before them is simple; while we’d love to add Joe Cole to the aforementioned defender, we’ll play our hand a little safer with the selection of wing wonder Eden Hazard instead.

Man City and Chelsea need to win in midweek to stand a chance of qualification- in City’s case that even that might not be enough. Given that they’ll have to go for broke, the Spanish wizardry of both David Silva and Juan Mata will be crucial in both sides’ respective efforts to remain in Europe’s top competition. With Bayern affected by a flu bug, City will fancy their chances- Arjen Robben and Toni Kroos have been left at home, while Mario Gomez and Thomas Mueller are both doubts.

We expect Real Madrid will be putting out a much changed side for their trip to Ajax tomorrow evening. At £56m on the transfer market Kaka is still the third most expensive player in the history of football and yet stands a strong chance of being one of Mourinho’s main men in this dead rubber of a fixture in Holland. Not bad if you can afford it.

The FC APOEL story has been a truly astounding one. They’re already confirmed as one of the final 16 squads in the Champions League but with an unbeaten record and a chance to top their group there’s still plenty left to play for. The comparatively cheap (just 4.7) Gustavo Manduca is our man to back in Cyprus.

With Manchester United heading to Basel needing a result of some sort it means that Fergie can’t really use this midweek to rest any of his key players. With Javier Hernandez sidelined at Aston Villa last weekend this leaves Wayne Rooney with a more secure spot than otherwise expected. With only 2 goals away to Galati in the last two and a half months it’s time our boy got back on the scoresheet.

Napoli’s victory over Manchester City has put their qualification fate in their own hands. A trip to Villarreal last season saw them knocked out of the Europa League but we envisage a different result as, this time around, they face a much poorer Villarreal side with nothing to play for. Edinson Cavani, coming off two goals at the weekend, should be the man to lead his side to victory.

Valencia likely need at least a score draw at Stamford Bridge tonight if they want to continue their Champions League adventure. Getting a goal against Chelsea these days isn’t the hardest task in the world, and we’re backing Roberto Soldado to do just that.

We’ve already stockpiled from defence and midfield, but if you’re fond of some Gallic flair, why not consider adding another player from Lille into the mix? Moussa Sow will be leading from the front and has the strongest chance of all at grabbing the goals required to see the French champions through.

If you need a budget striker, then reigning European Champions Barcelona will provide an unlikely outlet. With top spot guaranteed, Pep Guardiola will hopefully give youngster Isaac Cuenca another chance in his starting line-up. We’ll have the team-sheets to confirm any issues but at just 4.5 and at home to BATE he could prove to be a handsome Matchday Six gamble.

Please note that deadline for your UEFA Fantasy Champions League team selection will be at 20:30 CET today. This will mean that, as pointed out in last week’s Survival Guide, European Fantasy Managers should have Tuesday’s team-sheets to work with before closing.

Sorry guys I know your all chatting CL, but could you spare a second? Im having a bad time this season, I dont like taking hits, but I need to something with the dead wood in my team. Is this worth an eight point hit? or 4 point hit if I saved one of the moves for next week?

    DeLaet>Jones
    Ramsey>Bale
    VDV>Nani
    Hernandez>Baa

The four players you're planning to bring in look very decent, although I wouldn't necessarily give up on VDV and Ramsey just yet.

Take a 4 point hit and do VdV - Bale, Hernandez - Ba/Sturridge De Laet - Jones. Ramsey may come good yet. VdV seems to go about 7 or 8 games of brilliance then take a dip, usually injury- related.

Should I be prioritising Baines, Vermaelen or Bale as my transfer (possibly transferS) in this week? In my mini-leagues, the first two would be massive differentials as well???

I don't see why you do, I assume you're keeping Walters, Silva and VdV (and maybe O'Hara?) If you go cheaper you could get a sub who plays every week just in case someone misses out. You might also consider, Ben Arfa, Rodwell, Pilkington and it leaves you with enough spare cash to cover off potential price rises.

Eriksen is playing a Real side that has already won the group and has left several key players at home and they need to win. Otherwise, maybe Ballack, James Rodriquez, Danny, could even take a punt on Giggs with Carrick suspended.

In relation to the article posted by jamsiep on the previous page....

Doesn't that highlight a flaw in Vilas Boas's management style?

Judging by that, Chelsea's most costly player ever is struggling to adapt to a new system. This adds to defenders such as Terry being uncomfortable and unconvincing in a high line defensive system. Managers like Mourinho and Ferguson are able to change their systems based on the needs of the team, surely if AVB was thaaat (insert italics) he would be able to use a system momentarily until Chelsea have the suitable players?

Seems to highlight how one dimensional he is.

I read the article and it stated Chelsea play a slow tempo passing game. Watching the game at the weekend, and the amount of times Sturridge got behind the Newcastle back line running onto the ball, I'd have to disagree with the article.

I'd love to see Torres flourish with Chelsea, when he came on he just seemed to take too many touches, and was very hesitant the way he played. To me that's nothing to do with AVB's management style.

Agreed. The point about Chelsea's slow build up play would have been very appropriate if the article was written last season during Torres' struggles under Ancelotti, but I'm not convinced it's a valid argument anymore. AVB's inclusion of Romeu over Mikel in recent weeks clearly shows that he wants our build up play to be much quicker than before.

I wish he'd get a run of games in the team, especially without Lampard in the side. Worryingly, I think it's pressure for the big name players that's getting Drogba in the side at the moment, over Torres. Drogba offers very little these days, and is so lazy off the ball. Very, very frustrating to watch.

Like I said on the previous page, I don't think that our build up play is *that* slow under AVB, and certainly isn't as slow as it has been under previous managers. Take the second half against Newcastle, when Torres came on he had a couple of opportunities to score, very similar to the goals that he scored in abundance for Liverpool, but fluffed them.

As for the high defensive line, we defended a lot deeper against Newcastle, so maybe AVB is temporarily changing his philosophy?

Doesn't matter if it's at a higher tempo now than it was though if other managers had suitable players in Drogba and Anelka unlike the situation with Torres.

He could well be, 3 clean sheets in the last 4 now in the league.

    Jones Simpson Shawcross Riise Enrique
    Silva Bale Ramsey Larsson Drenthe
    Aguero Sturride Agbonlahor

1 Freebie this week and 2.4 million to spend.

Any suggestions for my team? I've been long thinking about dempsey.

Not sure Toprak will play due to injury, Archie. The Leverkusen team's not out yet, but I reckon it could be:

Leno - Castro, Reinartz, M. Friedrich, Kadlec - L. Bender, Rolfes - Schürrle, Ballack, Sam - Derdiyok (Kießling)

I gave up on the European games Europa League and Champions league games after two weeks . I deliberately fielded weakened teams so I could concentrate on the fpl.
Bit annoyed about that VDV injury because I had a contingency plan to make transfers if he was. But I thought he would be fit. The transfers in would have been Vermaelen and Bale. But I decided to make no transfers!
Oh yeah testing my link...decided to put my team up since its less embarrassing then usual! 🙂

ok RMT for this GW (UCL)

    Leno

    Vidic, N'Koulou, Thiago Silva

    Kroos, Gaitan, Valbuena

    Messi(c), Rooney, Soldado

Subs Lloris, Luisao, Eriksen, F Frei

I know some may look risky, but all of my bench plays tomorrow, leaves me with the option to sub them in if anyone doesn't play/has a mare tonight, I can sub them out without a problem

if I transfer Kroos out, I was reluctant as i wanted him for knockout stages, then I remembered that you have unlimited transfers going into knock out stages, so can just put him back in, I have 8.2 to spend, only teams I can't pick from are Marseille, United and Benfica

Also, just read that post Jamsiep linked on the previous page and for the most part, it's correct, but since his surgery he's lost a yard if pace, and his confidence has been knocked hugely by his drought, his body shape looks different and he even seems to run and dribble awkwardly. All points to him being a one dimensional player imo.
