The countdown to gameweek 15 begins properly once the fixture list has suffered its weekly frisking. This week we restrict our view of the schedule to the next four gameweeks, assessing the Christmas programme right up until the Boxing Day encounters. Here’s our take on those sides lavished with gift-wrapped weeks ahead, and those left unwrapping the fixture equivalent of a multi-pack of socks.

The Strong

Man United

Four one-nil wins in the last five, interrupted by a blip against Newcastle at Old Trafford, has clearly demonstrated that Alex Ferguson has instilled a desire to grind out wins; to cut the frills and concentrate on defending a lead. It’s perhaps not surprising to find that this spell immediately followed the 6-1 humiliation in their own backyard by neighbours City.

Christmas promises to see the three points continuing to flow, with fixtures that should bring them every opportunity to record four straight wins. A trip to Craven Cottage in gameweek 17 will provide the sternest test but, around that, home clashes with Wolves and Wigan and a trip to QPR should bring further defensive returns and the possibility of a greater attacking output.

The trick will be to identify those players immune to festive rotation – prospects like Phil Jones, Nani and Wayne Rooney will appear on our Christmas lists, although the latter has largely been cast aside and overshadowed by attractions elsewhere. The recent injury to Javier Hernandez may just see Rooney return to a role spearheading the United attack – that could signal a return to scoring ways having failed to find the net in his last eight league appearances.

Newcastle

Newcastle will go into Christmas ravaged by injuries in defensive areas with Steven Taylor ruled out and Fabricio Collicini looking likely to join him on the sidelines with a thigh problem. That could well see a shift away from their defensive players – sources of Fantasy points which have proved so popular over what has been an outstanding season for Alan Pardew’s men. Attention may now turn to their attacking assets, who could now face greater responsibility as the Magpies are forced to notch two or more goals in the hunt for wins.

The fixture list suggests that the Magpies could yet go into the New Year in good spirits. Home clashes with Swansea and West Brom look great platforms for Demba Ba to boost his goal tally. Likewise, the trip to Bolton on Boxing Day appears to hand Ba and his team-mates every opportunity to hit the goal trail and cover the cracks created by an ailing back four.

Liverpool

The reversal at the Cottage last night did little to aid Liverpool’s stuttering form, but Kenny Dalglish will be optimistic that a change in fortune is just around the corner. The home clash with QPR this weekend looks an important stepping stone that could set Liverpool up for a run of positive results over the Christmas period. Trips to Villa and Wigan carry potential, while a Boxing Day clash with Blackburn looks to have goals in it, with Steve Kean’s defence continually struggling to plug the gaps at the back.

Fantasy managers will be wary however and, beyond the obvious talents of Jose Enrique in defence, may struggle to find a way to profit from a potentially positive run of results. Luis Suarez continues to falter in front of goal and seems destined to be embroiled in controversy that threatens to blight his season. While his stock falls, Craig Bellamy could be worthy of some attention in the mid-price bracket, particularly if Suarez earns himself a two-match ban for last night’s altercation with the Fulham throngs.

Blackburn

Rovers are yet to claw their way out of trouble but, of all the sides down in the basement, they appear to have the goal power to inspire a climb up the table. Yakubu’s four-goal haul revealed the Nigerian as a major target for Fantasy managers over Christmas and, with the fixture list falling kindly, it’s difficult to write his bandwagon off as a passing fad.

Steve Kean takes his side to Sunderland this weekend, providing the opponents for Martin O’Neill’s baptism in front of the Stadium of Light fans. O’Neill will approach with caution, with Blackburn confident of spoiling the party, having scored in every away game so far this season.

The goals should continue with Ewood Park encounters against West Brom and Bolton to come, before a testing trip to Anfield on Boxing Day. Kean, with a little help from Yakubu and co, may well have steered his ship out of choppy waters by then.

Also consider

Everton – The home defeat to Stoke burst the Everton bubble, while a trip to the Emirates this weekend seems unlikely to offer a change in fortune. Home encounters with Norwich and Swansea follow however – that pairing, together with a Boxing Day visit to Sunderland, offer David Moyes’ side an opportunity to go into 2012 with a more positive outlook.

Bolton – The Trotters are flailing right now – scrambling for goals and points to keep their head above water. Unfortunate to be reduced to 10-men at Spurs, they will have Gary Cahill available to them for the visit of Villa thanks to today’s successful red card appeal. Owen Coyle will hope that he can help inspire an improvement, with the fixture list at least providing some assistance going into the New Year.

Swansea – Brendan Rodgers’ side just aren’t able to build on their form at the Liberty Stadium, failing miserably to stem the tide of goals on their travels. Home encounters with Fulham and QPR in the next four gameweeks offer the chance for further clean sheets and points, while visits to an under strength Newcastle and inconsistent Everton, could also offer profits.

The Weak

Wigan

It’s difficult to imagine that the Latics will be fuelling any Fantasy lineups going into the Christmas period. A failed dalliance with Victor Moses aside, Wigan have been devoid of any temptations and are now about to embark on a run of opponents that looks set to cut them adrift at the foot of the table.

The pundits are writing them off and it’s hard to argue, particularly as Wigan are set to go into the New Year off the back of fixtures against Chelsea, Liverpool and United.

Fulham

The victory over Liverpool will give Martin Jol’s side a much-needed foothold in an inconsistent season. Before Jol and Fantasy managers can begin to get excited about the prospects down at the Cottage however, the fixture looks set to dampen the enthusiasm and lead them a precarious route through the Christmas programme.

Fulham will be the latest side to contend with Swansea’s possession football at the Liberty Stadium this weekend, that’s followed by a potentially profitable home clash with Bolton. After that, however, Jol’s men will take on United and Chelsea in a Christmas double header that will likely leave them with a hangover before the New Year’s festivities have even begun.

QPR

Joey Barton and the odd budget defender aside, it seems unlikely that too many Fantasy managers will go into December relying on any of Neil Warnock’s squad. Heidar Helugson has shown consistency of late and, at a budget price, has attracted recent investment. His new owners may well be set for disappointment however, as Rangers prepare to face three of the top defences in the league, in addition to a Sunderland side who could well be about to enjoy a renaissance under Martin O’Neill.

Goals look hard to come by then, while clean sheets could also be a struggle in a difficult month that could see the R’s hovering over the trapdoor.

Also be wary of…

Aston Villa – One goal in seven starts for Gabby Agbonlahor, two in the last five for Darren Bent – it’s clear that Villa are struggling in attack. Having kept just a single clean sheet in seven, there’s also genuine concern that Villa on the slide. With Liverpool and Arsenal at Villa Park next, the trip to the Reebok this weekend looks vital if Alex McLeish is going to enjoy any kind of Christmas comfort.

Man City – City have conceded a goal or more in their last seven league games but have scored a stunning 25 goals to compensate. Despite Roberto Mancini stressing the need for clean sheets, with Chelsea and Arsenal up next for City, it seems likely that the “score more than them” policy will have to continue, at least until the gameweek 17 clash with Stoke.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I am taking my BIGGEST gamble of the season so far and it involves saving a transfer (slightly underwhelming I know). But I have 2 injuries and 3 doubtfuls.

Very good chance that Ben Arfa, Drenthe, Hernandez and Rangel won't play. I'd use that FT this week.

You're screwed if Jones is rested again. Or Silva.

I'd bet good money - if the missus hadn't already spent it - that you won't have 11 starters.

Maybe an assist? Maybe a yellow. But Lord Ferg loves him, so he will play/sub on a rotational Man U squad

Indeed. The thing is I want to bring in players like Sturridge/Welbeck, Mata/Nani, Baines/other. And they all have tough fixtures this week or in the case of Nani lacks form and Welbeck lacks match fitness. I think It might be worth saving for that reason, I wouldn't be any better off

Na, I want those players in but this weeks fixtures are putting me off. Another week to look at them would confirm for me who I should bring in. Also it becomes more clear for teams such as Chelsea and Everton in terms of fixtures. Also Welbeck will almost certainly start after this weekend

Downing worth a punt this week at home to QPR?

With the loss of both Lucas and Spearing, I can see Liverpool lining us as:

    Reina
    Johnson Skrtel Agger Enrique
    Kuyt Henderson Adam Downing
    Suarez Bellamy

As Drinkup points out, Downing was benched and Liverpool lost. Despite not being one of the glamorous players to choose from, I can see him starting in a 4-4-2 and there's the potential for Suarez to be suspended in the very near future so he's likely to be chosen to provide service to Carroll.

Despite no goals, and no assists it's not without looking a threat. He's hit the woodwork 2 or 3 times and gets into dangerous players. Sure, he's not worth what Liverpool paid for him but in fantasy terms 7.9m doesn't look too bad value.

And you cant even guarentee he'll play with Maxi pushing for a slot

Don't fancy Yaya against Chelsea on the up, likewise Milner who is more of a rotation threat. Ramires looks interesting once the Citeh game is out of the way, and I'm going to pass on Lennon because I have VDV and Bale.

        Cheers for the input.

Btw. I like to take the odd punt and try and pick players before they hit a purple patch. Mark & Co did an article on which type of fantasy manager you were, and I could definitely relate to the one that over analyses everything!

Liverpool just aren't scoring, not playing well.

Downing and Kuyt are terrible and Henderson/Adam isn't the best CM pairing. Suarez may be banned so Carrlol may play. Don't see them scoring more than 1 vs QPR tbh.

Only punt would be Henderson at 6.1M. Though will probably return 2pts.

To anyone with Rooney or thinking of getting him to replace Hernandez (I’d do it but I can’t afford it). Have a look at Rooney’s stats and when the decline set in, it correlates to when Hernandez began to start alongside him (as well as to Cleverley’s injury). Why? Hernandez is a fantastic goalscorer and as United focused on defence in the aftermath of the derby it meant they created less chances per game, so if you imagine that your main guy in the box is only gonna get 1 or 2 chances, the guy in the United squad you’d want on the end of them is Hernandez, the natural goalscorer (Rooney can be clinical, but he can also snatch at easy chances) thus Rooney is forced deeper. Secondly as good as Hernandez is in the box his contribution (although significantly improved this season) is minimal, he doesn’t win many aerial balls, and isn’t great at holding it up, meaning he has to be the focal point of the attack, meaning Rooney becomes a support striker. When Welbeck plays, he is more involved, although he can be the guy to finish moves off, he runs the channels more, will drop deeper and can win aerial balls and hold the ball up, and this allows Rooney more opportunity to get forward. So, theoretically, with Welbeck alongside him, Rooney’s chances of goals significantly improves. (If like me you can’t afford him than Welbeck is a viable alternative as he’ll still get goals and assists, but Rooney will score more points)

I will believe it when I see it. At the moment Rooney is way to expensive to take up a forward spot and returning 2-3 points.

same situation applies, he's not gonna play Nani up top with Rooney behind him, and I have to say v Benfica he played Young in behind Rooney, he may also opt for that. Either way expect to see Rooney spend more closer in and around the opposition penalty box.

          Nani Rooney
          Young Jones Giggs/Carrick Valencia
Thats what im expecting, Nani played well up there against villa,,,a bit lost but i tkink he will try it at home, could be pretty exciting imo.

I also don't think he'll play a winger as a striker and leave 2 fit strikers on the bench, when Hernandez was injured st the start of the season he played Nani on the right, Young on the left, Welbeck and Rooney up front and Valencia on the bench.

I don't think Danny will start 2mor, but he come on for last 20-30 mins for match fitness. If he does it is my belief he may do VdV against Wolves, do some damage then come off at 60-65 mins.

Didn't like being so high up and the game was doing my head in.

Constantly churning things around, who to bring in etc, was too much.

This time around, I don't give a toss about the game.

Bought tickets today or Andre Bocelli next year. Ok it's a rare event but £145 for good seats in Liverpool? My friend paid £225 for one in London!

"So manger, how many folk in the audience tonight?"

"Hmm, poor turn out tonight Andre - only five hundred (actually 10,000). And here's your cut" (handing him a big wad of monopoly money......

Having a hard time figuring out my best move, what do you guys think:

    I start with

Ramsey / Drenthe / VDV / Suarez (VDV I want, to hell with the rest of them)

    a) Nani / Reo-Coker / VDV / Ba (3 players I want, 1 deadwood)
    b) Walcott / Drenthe / VDV / Yak (1 I want, 2 gambles, 1 deadwood) + 4pts
    c) Nani / Drenthe / Bale / Ba (2 I want, lose VDV who I'm keen on, 1 deadwood)

Does it really make bad FPL sense to do A? In my eyes trading deadwood for deadwood for a 4 pt hit isn't all that bad if you get to upgrade to Nani without losing VDV.

Any pearls of wisdom would be appreciated.

though wait to see if nani comes thru euro tie. Bale is a necessity at the mo. Ba looking good and good fixtures coming up. Vdv is a hamstring bombscare.

Yes. There is less rotation risk imo. as SAF can focus on using all the best players in PL. With Owen, Berba and Hernadez all out Welbeck should be the best choice with Rooney up front. BUT you never know with SAF 😉

Sorry, I have to post this "well composed and informative article" -

Sunderland have a tough opening day fixture as they travel to play Liverpool at Anfield and also play Chelsea in their opening six fixtures but they do also feature against two of the newly promoted games in this opening period. One of the most attractive factors about Sessegnon is his classification as a midfielder despite Steve Bruce’s indications that he intends to continue playing him in a more attacking role. His price is also very attractive at 8m on Euro-eleven (6.5 on the official game) and we fully expect this price to rise significantly before he is due to travel to the African Cup of Nations in January. Sessegnon has been one of the most talked about players in our experts’ discussions this summer and we can now only wait in anticipation.

          Pretty up to date huh?

Stephane Sessegnon. A fine specimen of a man. Hailing originally from the continent of Africa. Beautiful flowing locks and a sculptured physique. In his youth he excelled for his school team and encapsulated the effort and technique required of a prospective EPL professional footballer.

Just found stuff saying Turner was injured, btw Oshea is a player I like a lot. Still think he should play RB since Richardson is no good at LB.
Having a lineup or Oshea, Brown, Turner/ Bramble , Bardsley- would probably be best.

I was joking about the VDV cos most are transfering him out for Nani/Bale.
Depends on the rest of your team as regards the Ba, Mr Colleen or Wellbeck.

lol i do beleive that will pay off this weekend tho mate, its against stoke, and its away, harry wont wanna not start him, he's needs muscle at stoke, defoe is a little weak holding balls up sometimes coz of his size obviously, he will wanna tuck the game away, then do his usual vdv sub off and put defoe on to tip the game their way and see it out. VDV will grab a goal or two this weekend my friend, and bale with one assist.

Anyone care to offer WC team "must-haves"?

Trying to help my friend with a team, but he's lost a lot of value and all the players I want to get him are basically the good players in my team.

As I am clearly biased I thought I would ask for some outside opinions?

    RvP? Mata? Ba? Baines? Bale?

I was thinking of just goofing around with differential punts to allow for big hitters (such as Lennon and Lindegard).

    Any ideas? Thanks!

I did that this week, almost worked but almost got punished badly.

        Bale(c) - 13pts(x2 for 26pts).
        RVP(vc) - 15pts(potentially 30pts).

Therefore only 2pts lost, could have been much worse.

      Rooney(c), RVP(vc).

Everton only lost 2-0 at City but looked very poor at home to Stoke - not even 1 shot on target...

Utd will score 100% vs Wolves, just whether Welbeck will mean Rooney will start scoring points again - e.g. disallowed goal at Villa.

My point exactly. Hernandez is the fox in the box and Rooney plays behind him and gets very deep to get involved.

The offside goal highlighted how him and Welbeck can link up and potentially score points. We'll see at Basel and then reassess for the Wolves game.

Thinking about now until January WC. Can have either:

    A. Smalling & Nani/Mata. Smalling may miss a game or two. See him playing most, though. Can't decide about Nani or Mata, but that's not the big issue for me. I think both are good.

    B. Verm & Yaya -- both guaranteed starters. Verm on fire, but Santos injury concerns me a bit (re clean sheets & even attacking if Verm has to cover at LB). Yaya starts and pretty consistent.

    Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

If Santos is out, Vermaelen will play LB, like he does for Belgium. Will that mean he gets forward even more?

Yaya Toure plays 90mins and will be off in January for ACON - perfect time to get him in and get rid before Jan WC. Smalling will play the odd game at RB. Evans/Ferdinand, him and Jones competing alongside Vidic. Jones can play CM/RB with twins and Anderson/Cleverley all out. Expect rotation.

Mata is a nice differential - I like him but can't get him into my team atm.

Ba for sure, best fixtures, no rotation threat!

    Quiet times so I will ask this minor question;

Start Pilkington at home to newcastle or in same game, Simpson away to Norwich?

Pilko definitely. Even at full defensive stength NewC have only kept one CS all season.

Now they are weakened they will probably concede, and got to think Pilkington may be invloved

Between those two, I'd go Pilkington vs unsettled Newc defence

Need some opinions.. Team is as follows and i have 1 free this week and 1.7 in the bank. Am looking at Given-possibly howard and Mcauley-BAE next week. Currently, it works exactly but given may drop soon so thinking i should do the howard one this week even if i will still play vorm. BAE should still be ok next gw as he has only just risen am i right?? so was just wondering is there any others keepers i should get instead and should my plan work??

    Vorm
    Mcauley P.Jones Brown
    SIlva Nani Walters Larsson
    Ba Ade RVP
    Subs: Given, Simpson, N.Taylor, Moses

Howard is a lot of money for a 5.4 goalie that has had only two clean sheets all season, regeradless of future rotation with Vorm. I'd be inclined to get an even cheaper number 2 goalie and spend the rest elsewhere

Already have Simpson and without Colloccini and S.Taylor as mentioned above not sure on Krul. Also not sure on Wigan's chances of keeping cleanies. Howard's fixtures are quite good.

If that's who you want he certainly has some good home fixtures coming up

Well i just don't know who else tbh.. No one else that really hits me. Wigan have Liverpool chelsea mu in next 4. Krul has no collocini or taylor and i already have simpson. Although Eve have only kept 2 cleanies all year they have had some toughish fixtures and have some easy ones and a DGW coming up.. Friedel has crosse my mind but because I'm looking at BAE i don't know. Would also like to somehow get Bale for Larsson but dunno how to do that one

even if you get Howard now, you wont be playing him ahead of Vorm this weekend. Monitor Given's price and consider standing pat for this week. You then go into next week with 2 xfers which gives you a bit more leeway.

True and i planned on doing that and having 2 next week, however, given is set to drop soon and then the given-howard and Mcauley-BAE won't work as at the current prices it works exactly.
