Rafael Van der Vaart declares himself 100% fit for Spurs’ game at Stoke this weekend. Injury rules Dimitar Berbatov out of Man United’s Champions League trip to Basel, while Luis Suarez is the subject of another FA investigation:

Rafael Van der Vaart gave his Fantasy managers a boost today, with a positive update on his ongoing hamstring strain. The Dutchman started on the bench for only the second time in his Spurs career at the weekend, but admits that while he fully understood his manager’s decision, he is determined to win back his starting place for Sunday’s trip to Stoke. With Gareth Bale in such stunning form and Jermain Defoe offering a viable alternative for Redknapp up front, plenty are selling on Van der Vaart, though this news may throw potential Fantasy transfer plans up in the air a little:

I fully understand I had to start on the bench. I could only train once with the group. Then there are some more players the manager can pick, so of course I had to start off the bench. With regards to my injury I can say it feels pretty well, up to 100% fit. I just have to keep up the hard work this week and hope I start next game.

Dimitar Berbatov has failed to recover from an ankle injury in time for Man United’s Champions League trip to Basel. There’s no let-up in problems up front for United right now and with Javier Hernandez also injured ahead of the weekend league clash with Wolves, Sir Alex Ferguson has something of a dilemma. Having just returned from a muscle injury, Danny Welbeck is not fully fit, though Fergie used Nani as a makeshift centre forward against Aston Villa last weekend- an option he could possibly revisit at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Aleksandar Kolarov has been ruled out for four weeks after picking up a groin problem. The left-back picked up the injury in last week’s Carling Cup win over Arsenal and was subbed off just half an hour into the Emirates clash, meaning Gael Clichy is likely to be nailed-on for the next few Gameweeks, though Joleon Lescott could potentially offer cover if Roberto Mancini remains keen to rotate with regularity over a bust festive period.

Mancini admitted this morning he is keen for the club to offload Carlos Tevez amid suggestions the player is in talks with AC Milan regarding a proposed move to Serie A. With Milan’s vice-president Adriano Galliani stating he is already negotiating with Tevez’s advisors, Mancini went on to say:

I don’t know what the situation is with Carlos at this moment. I think that for us it is important to sell him. We can do this for him and for the club. If he has the chance to go to Italy, I am happy for him.

Harry Redknapp reckons he may get more from his Tottenham team if Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon switch wing roles. The Spurs boss feels his decision to move Bale right and Lennon left was key to his team’s performance against Bolton last weekend, saying:

The turning point at West Brom last week, I felt, was when I changed the two wingers over about eight minutes into the second half and we started opening them up. So it’s something that’s interesting with those two. Aaron’s been in good form lately. (But) I think he’s better on the left than on the right, in all honesty. I think he gets more opportunities to score goals when he plays on the left. On the other side he tends to go one way.

The FA are to investigate Luis Suarez after the Liverpool forward appeared to gesture towards Fulham fans in last night’s defeat at Craven Cottage. This only adds to the Uruguayan’s woes, with his alleged racism charge against Patrice Evra also still hanging over him. With Liverpool facing a kind run of upcoming fixtures, it perhaps places doubts against Suarez as a Fantasy option over the next few weeks, though his form on the pitch has been admittedly below-par this season.

    Thinking of a little GW15 Sturridge > Ba, GW19 Ba > Sturridge switcheroo. Waste of 2 transfers? I would have no Newcastle coverage for their nice fixtures without this.

      Certainly a waste, the problem with these types of transfers is something more pressing always comes along which means either you end up with the player you don't want or you have to spend points to rectify it.

    Newcastle really don't have any midfield options worth considering do they?
    Cabaye - plays too deep.
    Tiote - deep card magnet.
    HBA - not looking like a sure starter.
    Gutierrez - not consistent returns
    Obertan - no end product.

    Anybody care to disagree? Any of those are about the right price with their fixtures to be useful but I'm not sure about acquiring any of them.

      Guthrie's bit of a steal if Tiote is confirmed out for a few weeks but that's more of a bench fodder position he'd be occupying.

      Generally, I agree although I'd suggest Cabaye is capable of some points in the next few. Probably better options like Brunt out there though.

        How do you rate Obertan - think he's worth a punt at 4.9? He's played most games this year and is quite attacking just a bit crap.

          Takes on the odd long-ranger...should play when Tiote is away at African cup and if he's not fit but there's no real confirmation of how long Tiote is out for.

          Wouldnt bother with Obertan - hoping he'll be dropped soon.

          If you're looking for a safe option, I'd look elsewhere.

    you know, i don't think it's the just VDV's dodgy hamstring that makes people sell him. if he hadn't been injured, we'd all have kept him and carried on regardless.

    it's the fact that you can trade him in for Bale, have some super TOT cover AND still have1.5-2M left over to splash out on a decent defender (recent weeks have seen Baines, Jones and Vermaelen coming back into fashion)

    like i said, nothing new. just my opinion for what it's worth.

      Yeah, like everyone else I'm stuck on the fence on what to do. I have VDV but desperately would like to upgrade Hutton to either Jones or Richards but the only way to do that would be to downgrade Nani, Silva or VDV and Bale just makes the most sense in terms of form and price. Yet I still haven't pulled the trigger!

      Sporting ABG, that's been the case thus far, but historically Bale has been very inconsistent. He'd have a couple of weeks of 7-12 point games then a string of 2s and 3s and that's why he was never a DVD substitute. Lennon too, is incredibly frustrating, he's got lots of potential but, similarly to Walcott, final delivery is often far too poor, while Moddy plays a little too deep to be a very high FPL scorer.

      Has this changed. Well, on Spurs form, perhaps, and Bale is seemingly far more consistent, but I stil firmly believe DVD will significantly out score Bale over the season, and that's why I'm keeping him.

    Thinking about bolstering my defence for the packed Xmas schedule, anyone think it would be a good idea to buy Smalling as cover for Jones?

    My defence would then be:

    Verm, Jones, Enrique, Simpson, Smalling

    Can't fathom who to bench or play this weekend. Thoughts, anyone?

    Vorm
    Vermaelen, Kompany, Walker
    Pilks, VdV, Nani(vc), Silva
    Adebayor, RvP(c), Yakubu

    Subs: Ruddy, Simpson, Turner, D.Jones

      HunkyD, Turner in for Kompany, perhaps but not much in it really. You've basically got it right, from what I can tell.

    Nasri, Lennon or Modric?

    I know Modric is a class act but he is definitely not a points machine. Lennon has been really good lately and Nasri did well last weekend?

    Any views on this would be appreciated

      For their respective prices, I'd say Lennon is the only one of those three even worth thinking about. Nas gets too few starts in the league and Moddy plays too deep to be a real FPL points earner. But Lennon has potential to get double-figures once in a while, balanced against those games where he'll do bugger all.

      Check out his FPLscores: 2, 1, 2, 9, 12, 3, 2, 9 - worth £7.2m? Not for me.

    Team for GW15
    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Simpson / RTaylor / Kompany (Jags / Barmett)
    Bale / VDV / Silva / Dyer (Ferguson)
    Ade / RVP / Aguero
    Really can’t decide what route to take for GW15. Tempted to drop VDV for Mata as I’ve already got Bale and Ade for Spurs cover but then again I can’t see Chelsea scoring many past Man City at the weekend. Think my defence needs work too but again tempted to sit tight and see how Newcastle gets on at the weekend. So what do you think, sit tight and save the transfer or VDV for Mata? Or something else entirely?!

      What about VDV to Nani? Man Utd home to Wolves, even they should score more than one, shouldn't they? Nice rank btw.

    Which three defenders would you pick from my defenders this week?

    1) Simpson (Norwich away)
    2) Jose Enrique (QPR at home)
    3) Wes Brown (Blackburn at home)
    4) Shawcross (Tottenham at home)
    5) Kompany (Chelsea away)

    I have 3.6 million in the bank and might get rid of Shawcross. However, i have already used my one free transfer for this week.

    Thanks

    Any opinions on these potential transfers; I have a preference to Verm over Jones because of the busy xmas period.

    A Saylor -> Vermaelen
    Ramsey -> Gower
    Rangel -> Smalling (4pt hit)

    B Saylor -> Vermaelen
    Ramsey -> 5.5m (HBA, Formica, Morrison)

    C Saylor -> Jones
    Ramsey -> 5.9m (Eagles, Brunt, O'Hara)

    D Saylor -> Jones
    Rangel -> Smalling
    Ramsey -> 5.2m (4pt hit)

    ok guys if you had 9.9 million for a defender and a mid who would you get

    Jags and a 4.5 mid
    ShawX/BAE and a 4.8 mid (Allen, Dyer or B Johnson)
    Brown and a 5.4 mid (Barfa, Rodwell)

    or another combo?
