There was just the one match to complete the gameweek last night, but Fulham’s late victory over Liverpool – ending the Reds’ impressive run of away wins – was an action packed one in terms of disciplinary affairs…..

A controversial red card shown to Liverpool’s Jay Spearing was the lowlight, with his late challenge on Moussa Dembélé landing him with three matches of enforced rest (QPR, avl, wig). While the victim in that play, Dembélé, earned himself a fourth yellow card for an earlier challenge on Luis Suarez and a space on our Suspension Tightrope.

Post-match, though, Kenny Dalglish revealed the club are considering an appeal against the dismissal, with the Liverpool boss far from happy with a decision that leaves his side short for central midfield options, given that Lucas was ruled out for the rest of the season only last week.

Having rounded up the other sinners in yesterday’s update, the rest of today’s article is a chance to review the other disciplinary stories of the last week and to dissect their various fantasy ramifications.

Gary Cahill

First up, as expected, Bolton have lodged their appeal over Gary Cahill’s red card from the weekend loss. This incident will now be heard by the FA panel later this week to determine if Cahill has a case to answer. If not, he will be available for the trip to Aston Villa in gameweek 15, but if the panel feel there is any frivolity in this appeal, they can -if they wish- add additional games to the ban. He’ll remain on our ban list for now then until there’s further news.

Romelu Bertrand and Ryan Lukaku

The second story to tidy up comes from the Carling cup quarter-final fixtures, where Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand was incorrectly booked for a lunge on Jordan Henderson- Romelu Lukaku was the real culprit is a bizarre case of mistaken identity. It seems that to date no appeal has been lodged by Chelsea to correct the decision, but as this Guardian article explores – this might just suit both the club and Lukaku, as the yellow that was brandished means that a retrospective suspension in the form of an FA charge is no longer an option for the disciplinary panel, despite the apparent severity of the challenge. Like turkeys voting for Christmas, we think this one is therefore destined to go no further.

Luis Suarez

The ‘elephant in the room’ when it comes to disciplinary matters is the alleged racism case involving Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra. Much has already been written in the press regarding the details of the case, so we’re not going to delve into those further, but it’s been dragging on for some time now so it’s worthwhile updating on the progress. For those that have been living in a cave, this incident first blew up almost 2 months ago in the 15th October fixture when Manchester United visited Anfield.

While Suarez was charged by the FA a month later, given the nature of the case and the complicated semantics involved, progress has been understandably slow since then and no hearing has yet been held. Some sources (such as Daniel Taylor’s summary last week) suggest this one may have some legs yet, but over the weekend, the Mirror broke the news that this case will be heard “in the next 2 weeks”. We wait therefore with baited breath.

Suarez was also involved in further controversy in last night’s Craven Cottage defeat. After spending much of the evening getting grief from the Fulham fans amidst accusations of diving, the Uruguayan is alleged to have gestured in response- something the FA may also choose to analyse if they feel there’s a case to answer.

And Finally

I’m not expecting to make this a regular feature of this as we’ve got Andy to enlighten us in European affairs, but I stumbled across this useful list on the Yahoo sport pages earlier and it fits nicely here. The list details the disciplinary situation ahead of the round 6 fixtures in the Champions League, so it may act as a pointer to players that might be handed a rest to avoid suspension in the knock-out rounds. Make of it what you will when it comes to picking your team in the rotation minefield of the upcoming match days. Look out for Andy’s Watchlist post later to further steer your thoughts.

I am also terrible at FPL.

    Funny observation.

During the dead zone hours, cheap defenders are the order of the hour.

And during these peak hours, it's all about expensive defenders.

Apart from Naylor I can't see any value in cheap defenders anymore, didn't Wilkinson only play 40 miunutes or so? Norwich can't keep cleanies, Simpson is a nice consistent starter but not a CS holder really...

Wilko's fit now & nailed-on at RB. I'd play him against Wolves next GW. Stoke can always pull out a CS against the weaker teams.

McAuley/Shorey/Olsson this GW is a real deal.

Brown is a brilliant defender. Now that O'Neil is here, he'll surely tighten the defence. You'll see.

Simpson is always going to potential for CS when newcastle against weaker teams (more so at home)

Add BAE & Fulham defenders, I can't see why you need to invest in expensive defenders. My average has been more than decent with this strategy (as in they delivered what I expected)

          BAE isn't that cheap.

Stoke got lucky against Everton imo.

West Brom very very rarely keep clean sheets.

Sunderland are terrible, but you're right, I'll give you that one, O'Neil will probably tighten things up.

Simpson, as I have him I'll agree 😛

Sorry for repost, hate when something ends up at the bottom untouched haha.

I understand people opting for Vidic but I honestly can see Jones starting every game for us. Maybe this weekend he might be a slight doubt due to the game against Basle tomorrow being very important for us, but after that I can see him starting every game. He plays OOP in midfield sometimes and has just opened his goal tally. Most of all he is one of our best players at the moment and at 1.5ish (cba checking) less than Vidic I can see him scoring a lot more points and being farrrr better value.

Basically, Jones>Vidic for United coverage. Unless you want both that is 😉

+1 I am very pleased I have him in my team. His versatility is a huge asset, so while others in CM/RB/CB get a rest Jones fills in for them. This is why he is good for almost every game. This plus his youthful energy and great form will likely see him play every game over the xmas period.

I think something has as well. Thats the first 1-0 we have had where the scorer didnt get at least 2. Helguson also missed out on saturday despite scoring.

Im pleased if it has, far too much emphasis placed on the goalscorers.

    Champs league analysis

    Group A
Bayern are through with no need to worry against City. Villarreal are out nothing to play for but pride against a Napoli side who need a win. City Need to overcome the German giants at the Ethiad to stand any chance.

    Group B
Wide open, all teams bar Inter need a win for 2nd-4th spot. CSKA travel to Italy and currently occupy 4th spot with 5 points. Its all or nothing for Lille at home to Trazponsor.

    Group C
Looks like Benfica top the group with Gatali finishing off bottom. United and Basel fight it out for 2nd spot with United only needing a point

    Group D
Real are through and play Ajax in the final game and Lyon travel to Croatia. This could be tight Ajax are on 7 points Lyon on 4. Their head to heads are even so will come down to goal difference. Lyon need a 7 goal swing to qualify for the knock out stages.

    Group E
Leverkusen are all but through and Chelsea are lever on points with valenica for the second spot. The first tie finished 1-1 in Spain. So Chelsea need either a 0-0 or a home win to qualify.

    Group F
Arsenal tie up top spot. With Marsaille on 7 points, Olymiakos on 6 and Dortmund on 4. Marsialle play Dortmund in Germany with the tie in France finishing 3-0 to the hosts. Olympiakos need something if they are to guarantee the continuation of European football into the new year. Dortmund need to beat Marsaille 3-0 or better to finish above them.

    Group G
Apoel (unbelievably) qualify regardless of results this week. Shaktar are bottom regardless. It’s a fight between Porto and Zenit for the remaining spot with Porto needing to win a draw will not do in Portugal.

    Group H
Barecelona need to beat BATE 9-0 to claim the highest win margin in Champions League match history.

In short my bets are likely going to be –
Dortmund (7/10 on PP), Porto (8/11on PP), Man U (8/13 on PP) Napoli (4/6 on PP), Lille (1/2 on PP)
Paddy power offer the best odds for the accy with only the Man U and Lille odds slightly better elsewhere.

Thanks for that, very useful, but can I just say that backing teams at odds on that dont NEED to win is a passport to the poorhouse. United will happily play out a 0-0 or 1-1 if thats the situation with 10 minutes to go.
Of the matches tonight I reckon Group A is the most predictable with Man City and Napoli needing wins against teams with nothing to play for so I'l be doing a double on them at nearly 2/1.

Smalling is another option as people from my mini league are also getting jones in. Smalling would be a good differential, however more rotation prone, right?

Yeah definitely more rotation prone by the looks of it, however his price is pretty low so might be worth the gamble, if you don't mind taking gambles. Personally I prefer safety.

Baines fixtures good, pens frees corners- no doubt he needs someone to convert, if that happens he'll hit a lot of doubles. Also theres the "odd" cs and the scout picks him a lot- and there always right 

          But why?
It's not like Vermaelen is injured at the moment, and worst comes to worst you have a transfer for when he does.
          Vermaelen has played 543 minutes for 3 goals, 1 assist, 3 CS, 7 bp's and 49 points.
Baines has played 1170 minutes for 2 goals, 1 assist, 2 CS, 8 bp's and also 49 points.
Considering Baines has played more than twice the minutes of Vermaelen yet has the same points and is also 1.0 million more isn't very convincing.

bit of a rush to say that straight away? But I understand the point. Not worth the risk to be trading cheapies around at the moment imo, I'll go as far to say Fulham won't keep more than 1 cleanie in that run of fixtures!

Yeah a bit presumptuous, just a gut feeling. There is always one team that manages a streak against the big boys each season. You do have a point about fixtures and a silly trade between cheap defenders. However Fulham do have a good tendency to get clean sheets and have always been good for them in the past

    APOEL vs Shakhtar

I think APOEL have been lucky this year to get through, but have worked hard and I think they deserve to be in the next round. Shakhtar are streets ahead quality wise IMO, and if decisions had gone their way they could have gone through.

APOEL will miss Ailton due to injury tonight Along with Trickovski while Pinto and Paulo Jorge miss out because of suspension.

I am a big fan of Shakhtar and I they haven’t performed to the levels they are capable of yet. Club captain Srna has said they are going to APOEL to defend the honour of the club badge and supporters, and they want to win this game.

Taking evrything into account I think Shakhtar @ 12/5 is a great price and I fully expect them to win.

Shakhtar DNB @ 6/4 are definitely worth investment for the more cautious of you. 🙂

    Good Luck.

Need to rethink Manduca & Oliviera then. But APOEL have so much to play for tonight whereas Shakhtar are out already despite what Srna says. Undecided now but thanks for the input.

They're a very proud club, you're right about APOEL playing for top spot buy they have been lucky to be in the position they are and will miss those players.

Obviously good transfer timing is crucial for consistent point scoring…what are people’s ideas on how many weeks to hold under-performing players?

The ongoing problem with mid price midfielders is the consistency issue. Their points tend to come in bursts and appear more cyclical. Sometimes patience pays with these players, other times it doesn’t and you can find yourself holding on to mis-firing players for too long. But, there are also problems with swapping and changing players in this price range and missing their cycles.

for me the quandary involves Ramsey, he is still playing well and getting in to good positions and he has been a little unlucky. My point being that Ramsey’s cycle is now due and may be missed if he is transferred out. I'm gonna keep him this week (mainly because i have Given and Drenthe to ponder and ideally I'd like to bring in Nani this week) Arsenal are playing well and have Everton at home and then they are away at Man City. If he doesn’t perform against Everton then barring more pressing matters his time is up...

would be interesting to hear what are other people's general time frames for holding players?

Just had a look through his ICT stats and he's not as high up as I thought he would be. So his due-ness may be less than I thought.

Bendtner's time was up when he didn't perform against Wigan. When you can't produce the goods against and easy team then thats the time to get rid

I find Brunt is one of the prime examples of what you're talking about. Quite frankly the only reason why I've held on for so long is because he takes penalties for WBA. I'm trading him out for Sinclair this week

Did he now? Actually, the Man City game is the first game I've missed this season for City, I probably picked the right game! He's still, in my opinion, worth getting. He normally dominates. But he was out for 6 months before the start of the season, and has played virtually every game for us. He's probably getting a little tired after his first season in the EPL

I wouldn't hold any player just because they take penalties. The team might not get a penalty again this season and if they do, the taker could have it saved.

I try to hold on for at least 3 weeks of underscoring, I think 4 should be the max. Held on for Rooney for at least that, which was a mistake.

I say 4 just from a horrible experience of last season where I had Balotelli for 3 weeks and he did absolutely nothing. Got rid and then he scored a hat-trick against Villa 🙁

Get rid of Ramsey, he has maybe 1 or 2 chances a game but at the moment seems to just be filling a more energetic work man role whilst everyone else is reaping the benefits.

I tend to agree with you fratboy, I feel if you have done your research and made your call, then you should give your own instincts a chance. I think that one of the reasons the casual managers did so well initially was the consistency of their teams...they weren't chasing around for last weeks points and their selections scored well over a 5 week cycle.

i was the same with Rooney, only got rid last week, but mid-price midfielders are a little different and we perhaps should not expect a return every week...patience within this game is an interesting factor to ponder...

As a general rule of thumb, I feel that if you have made the call to transfer in a player, he should be given 4-5 weeks to perform. Perhaps one should stick to a certain amount of weeks...a bit like a stop-loss when trading shares...

In Tottenham's form and how he played on Saturday, he could smash them. Plus he scored 2 goals in the exact same fixture last season. Remember that brilliant, brilliant volley he scored right in the top corner? That's one of my favourite football moments from the past year or so

In response to te Kelly thing further up the page, he was only playing as Bairdinho was missing for us due to personal reasons so I'd be very wary of that. He did play well but Baird has had a decent season and will quite probably get his place back

thinking of saving my transfer.. got 3.7 in the bank..
    Vorm
    Jones Enrique McAuley
    Silva Bale Sessegnon Walters
    Rvp Sturridge Adebayor

    Krul Pilkington N.Taylor Richards
    3.7
    Strong enough?
Initially thought i'd do Sessegnon to Nani with the funds.. but now thinkin i'll give sess a last run out and next week i'll do Sess to Nani/Mata.. That way i can keep savin 2 transfers a week until necessary incase of games being called off/injuries etc etc..

    Vorm
    BAE - Jones - Enrique
    Rambo - Walters - VDV(vc) - Mata
    Bendtner - RVP(c) - Ade

Subs: Krul - Brown - Dyer - Simpson

    0 FT, 3.4 in bank

Got my starting XI and subs right?

Plan is getting rid of Bendtner next week, and play 4-3-3 (benching Rambo, playing Simpson)

Also looking to to VDV > Bale, Rambo > Nani and possibly Mata > Silva. Maybe squeeze in Vermaelen in the back, but if I do it will be after the Villa game.

Any point in doing a hit this week, and what are your thoughts on my transferplans?

I'd consider benching BAE for Brown as STO are normally decent at home and they've won their last 2. Brown has his first game under MON, so I'd expect them to improve on recent weeks, and they have a home tie with BLA.
