There was just the one match to complete the gameweek last night, but Fulham’s late victory over Liverpool – ending the Reds’ impressive run of away wins – was an action packed one in terms of disciplinary affairs…..

A controversial red card shown to Liverpool’s Jay Spearing was the lowlight, with his late challenge on Moussa Dembélé landing him with three matches of enforced rest (QPR, avl, wig). While the victim in that play, Dembélé, earned himself a fourth yellow card for an earlier challenge on Luis Suarez and a space on our Suspension Tightrope.

Post-match, though, Kenny Dalglish revealed the club are considering an appeal against the dismissal, with the Liverpool boss far from happy with a decision that leaves his side short for central midfield options, given that Lucas was ruled out for the rest of the season only last week.

Having rounded up the other sinners in yesterday’s update, the rest of today’s article is a chance to review the other disciplinary stories of the last week and to dissect their various fantasy ramifications.

Gary Cahill

First up, as expected, Bolton have lodged their appeal over Gary Cahill’s red card from the weekend loss. This incident will now be heard by the FA panel later this week to determine if Cahill has a case to answer. If not, he will be available for the trip to Aston Villa in gameweek 15, but if the panel feel there is any frivolity in this appeal, they can -if they wish- add additional games to the ban. He’ll remain on our ban list for now then until there’s further news.

Romelu Bertrand and Ryan Lukaku

The second story to tidy up comes from the Carling cup quarter-final fixtures, where Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand was incorrectly booked for a lunge on Jordan Henderson- Romelu Lukaku was the real culprit is a bizarre case of mistaken identity. It seems that to date no appeal has been lodged by Chelsea to correct the decision, but as this Guardian article explores – this might just suit both the club and Lukaku, as the yellow that was brandished means that a retrospective suspension in the form of an FA charge is no longer an option for the disciplinary panel, despite the apparent severity of the challenge. Like turkeys voting for Christmas, we think this one is therefore destined to go no further.

Luis Suarez

The ‘elephant in the room’ when it comes to disciplinary matters is the alleged racism case involving Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra. Much has already been written in the press regarding the details of the case, so we’re not going to delve into those further, but it’s been dragging on for some time now so it’s worthwhile updating on the progress. For those that have been living in a cave, this incident first blew up almost 2 months ago in the 15th October fixture when Manchester United visited Anfield.

While Suarez was charged by the FA a month later, given the nature of the case and the complicated semantics involved, progress has been understandably slow since then and no hearing has yet been held. Some sources (such as Daniel Taylor’s summary last week) suggest this one may have some legs yet, but over the weekend, the Mirror broke the news that this case will be heard “in the next 2 weeks”. We wait therefore with baited breath.

Suarez was also involved in further controversy in last night’s Craven Cottage defeat. After spending much of the evening getting grief from the Fulham fans amidst accusations of diving, the Uruguayan is alleged to have gestured in response- something the FA may also choose to analyse if they feel there’s a case to answer.

And Finally

I’m not expecting to make this a regular feature of this as we’ve got Andy to enlighten us in European affairs, but I stumbled across this useful list on the Yahoo sport pages earlier and it fits nicely here. The list details the disciplinary situation ahead of the round 6 fixtures in the Champions League, so it may act as a pointer to players that might be handed a rest to avoid suspension in the knock-out rounds. Make of it what you will when it comes to picking your team in the rotation minefield of the upcoming match days. Look out for Andy’s Watchlist post later to further steer your thoughts.

I like how this season is coming together with prices and player performances. This was only my second season so I'd never really witnessed the analysis of new player prices on this site before but the general consensus before the start of the season seemed to be that EVERYONE was overpriced but all of a sudden it doesn't seem that bad and we're starting to see (at least I am in my mini league) teams looking rather different.

Of course a lot of this is dependant on how players perform, had Ba, Yak, Bendtner, Gabby etc not scored any points all season then having budget players wouldn't have benefited but after last season with Caroll and Adam doing so well I think few people saw any value at the start of the season.

So far there has been a bit of value in 6m-ish midfielders doing ok, with the likes of Walters, Sessegnon, Pilkington, Eagles, Larsson. Not consistently maybe but in patches, and lets be honest, if everyone was consistent the game would be a bit boring!

With Bale coming in at over a million cheaper than VDV and performing well again he gives you options. It's surprising (I've been looking at loads of different options) how much that extra money can go around, and while VDV may score more when playing regularly you have to weigh up the options of the upgrades elsewhere.

Then there's defenders, at the start of the season it seemed to be mainly about cheap defenders and upgrading the rest of your team, but now, Vidic, Vermalen, Baines, Jones, etc are being floated about as great options, not to mention Richards getting 6 assists in 12 and Enrique being a great price!

Not really sure why I wrote this post or what point I'm trying to make (boredom?) other than, there was an awful lot of moaning about prices at the start of the season and it just shows what a bit of patience can do.

I'm sure it will be the same next year, when Ba and co get inflated prices but then all we'll have to do is wait for the bargains!

That extra 2-4 million by now goes a long way too.
For me Adebayor and Sturridge being about 2 million under price each has helped immensely in beefing up my back line.

I don't think you'd ever pay 10 millionish for a Newcastle striker - he'll be 8 or so next year like Odemwingie was.

It is the same every season, pretty much.

Prices seem so high at the start because the team value is only £100M, not £112M or whatever from the end of the season before. Plus the cheaper players that played well the previous season have obviously rocketed in price, so new bargain need to be looked for.

Cheap defenders at the start as next to no-one keeps many clean sheets at the start, then come christmas time the top defences seem to sort themselves out and go on a run of keeping many clean sheets so they become viable.

Sometimes it is easy to take information which surprise you personally, and with a knee-jerk reaction, pass it off immediately, believing it to also surprise the person(s) you are talking with, only to find yourself stating the painfully obvious, subsequently coming off as naive.

At least that happens to me sometimes.

    Morning Sports fans,

Based on the next 6 matches taking us into the new year which goalkeeper do you recommend I go for?

Fergie is rotating De Gea & Lindegaard so i'm just gonna avoid this nonsense.

Right now I am thinking of Friedel based on Tottenham's form, their fixtures look good and they have the extra match (riot rematch) vs Everton in gameweek 20.

    Joe Hart - Chelsea (A) Arsenal (H) Stoke (H) West Brom (A) Sunderland (A) Liverpool (H)

    Petr Cech - Man City (H) Wigan (A) Tottenham (A) Fulham (H) Villa (H) Wolves (A)

    Reina - QPR (H) Villa (A) Wigan (A) Blackburn (H) Newcastle (H) Man City (A)

    Friedel - Stoke (A) Sunderland (H) Chelsea (H) Norwich (A) Swansea (A) West Brom (H) Everton (H)

Anyone else thinking of heading down the final straight towards Winter WC time with a more expensive defence?

When taking into account value/fixtures and value/fixtures/form I'm seeing the likes of Vidic, Vermaelen, Jones and maybe even players such as Jagielka, Terry, Walker, Richards, Kompany, as worthy investment, due to their nailed on places along with good CS, goal scoring/assisting potential.

I'm seeing some of the above better picks than a lot of midfield / forward options.

Keith, I also think although Vidic's price is pretty steep, with United's fixtures from now until Winter WC he's a superb option - you basically buy him and he's an easy pick every single GW.

yeah vidic a brilliant option. next 5 gameweeks could be 3-4 clean sheets + bps + a goal maybe.. much better value than an inconsistent nani who you have to worry about startin every week etc.. with the value attackers available and with rvp being an automatic captain choice and with liv, manu, ars havin brilliant fixtures but no real attackin options(aprt from rvp) now is the time to shift to defenders imo

agreed mate. people who get rid of Bendy this week may come to regret it, and that's from a Rovers fan. He has one more week for me.

Ba is a good choice, but I will say that if I had Bendtner then I'd probably give him one more week. The Blackburn defence has been awful and the new manager syndrome for Sunderland. But couldn't blame anyone for kicking him out though, as he has been/is useless.

"Groin problem rules Aleksandar Kolarov out for 4 weeks" ....noooooooo!!!!!!

Oh, wait a minute it says Kolarov..thought it was an actual real life fantasy football prospect for a minute.

Anyone remember those scout articles last year encouraging us to get kolarov, wowing us with his 'potential'? They always left out the main ones...assists 0, goals 0, chances, 10,000

To be fair, the article they posted was about the potential for him and Boateng. It was the FFS site users that continued to push him 🙂 oh....and Mark.

FFS's constant talk of Kolorov, inclusion in scout picks etc was a dark stain on the otherwise superb reputation of the site.

Anyway Mark has Moses this year as his 'potential' gimp and no one in their right mind is following that advice.

Appreciate some advice if possible my team for this gameweek as it stands, I have one free transfer and 0.5 million in bank.

    Vorn (Westwood)
    Enrique Jones Simpson (Kompany Wilkinson)
    Silva Bale Drenthe VDV (Ferguson)
    Ba RVP Adebayor

    A) VDV to Nani or Mata
    B) Drenthe to Another 6.5 million budget
    C) Leave it as is

    Thanks for any feedback.

I like VDV to Nani as you are well covered with spurs. Utd have great fixtues for a while and Nani played well at the weekend.

I think I'm going to go VDV to Nani. I'd be even more inclined to do it if I already had Bale as you do.

If SAF confirms he is going to play in this more central advanced role Im doing it. Hard to predict just what will happen with Spurs at the weekend, Stoke Away used to be a hard fixture, and potentialy still is. Mata next week looks very tempting.

Ok I'm struggling who to bench this week and would like some
    advice please

    Krul/Vorm
    Wilkinson/Jones/Enrique/Richards/Raylor
    Silva/Bale/Vdv/Brunt/Walters
    Rvp/Ade/Ba

Also Vdv to Nani worth a hit or should I keep?

      Nice squad you got there.

      I would go for

      Vorm

      Jones Enrique Richards

      Silva Bale Brunt Nani

      RVP Adebayor Ba

Newcatle won't be as solid with S.Taylor out for the season. He and Coloccini were a great partnership so Vorm I reckon especially since they are at home.

Stoke at home haven't been getting the clean sheets you normally expect and Wilkinson doesn't offer much more than that.

Van Der Vaart has a chocolate hamstring and Redknapp has voiced his concerns about it and with Defoe playing well it's easy to justify not playing VDV game in game out. And the fixtures look great for Nani the Fanni so surely he gets his finger out.

I see Norwich scoring against Newcastle so unless Ryan Taylor scores another screamer I think Jones, Enrique & Richards are the way to go.

I have Walters aswell but I reckon Tottenham might keep him quiet so Brunt instead who has a great strike on him and Wigan are revolting.

Man United's next bunch of games look ideal for them to pick up wins and get some big points on the board,

    Wolves (H) QPR (A) Fulham (A) Wigan (H) Blackburn (H) Newcastle (A) Bolton (H)

I know there form has dipped in recent weeks since the City game but they are not conceding and surely the front line will come good.

I have Nani & Jones already and I wanted your opinions on going for Rooney or Welbeck. Rooney seems more of a risk cost he costs so much and he hasn't been scoring whereas Welbeck will surely be starting these games since Hernandez joins Owen and Berbs on the injury list.

So do I spend big on Rooney or put faith in Welbeck who is cheap and will surely get plenty opportunity to get goals?...........

    Vorm ( Ruddy)

Vermaelen Enrique Simpson ( Brown Tierney)

    VDV Walters Silva Ramsey (Ferg)

    Hernandez Adebayor RVP

With Hernandez injured I have 11.2 to spend on a striker with 1 FT.. Im thinking Hernandez> Welbeck and then Ramsey/Walters > Mata.. Thoughts please
