The curtain falls on another gameweek, leaving us to consider the services of a reborn Fantasy force, the shape-shifting goal power of Roberto Mancini’s title challengers and the merits of ousting a Dutch master…

The Player

Yakubu single-handedly carried Blackburn to three precious points against Swansea. A smart side-foot finish, two close range headers and a spot-kick completed a one-man destruction of the slick-passing Welshmen. It also put Fantasy managers on full alert to the potential of the Rovers striker.

We’ve long been discussing the potential of the revitalised Nigerian. Back in early November we unveiled an impressive shot per minute ratio – bettered only by Demba Ba amongst our analysis of the sub 7.5 FPL strikers. Two weeks later, we acknowledged Yakubu’s rise in our Watchlist prior to gameweek 13 trip to Stoke. While that encounter saw him draw a blank in a disappointing Rovers showing, a week later Yakubu took his goal tally for the season to 9, putting him on a par with Wayne Rooney and Ba.

There will of course be an influx of investment following such a major points haul. Already Yakubu has seen a price rise to 5.6, as thousands look to bring the budget option into their frontline; without doubt, Yakubu’s bandwagon is on the move.

Can it keep rolling? Looking at his form and fixtures, you’d have to say the omens look good. Rovers have a trip to struggling Sunderland next, having scored in every single away game so far this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side face both West Brom and Bolton at Ewood – both beatable, both unlikely to halt a Rovers attack that has scored 11 goals in their last 5. Yakubu looks well placed for a festive feast.

The Team

While Tottenham’s usual suspects put up another vibrant display against 10-man Bolton, Man City spread five goals throughout their lineup against a Norwich side caught in the headlights of their title charge.

It’s been a while since we switched our attention to Roberto Mancini’s outfit and, though many will point to the 5-1 win over Norwich as a flattering scoreline, there’s no denying the efficiency displayed in humbling Paul Lambert’s side, who have previously shown such determination in trips to Anfield, Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford this season. Against City however, the gulf in class became glaringly obvious – Norwich could not repel the waves of attacking talent in City’s armoury.

The goals came from Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Yaya Toure, Mario Balotelli and Adam Johnson. David Silva and Edin Dzeko had to be content with an assist, Micah Richards, Vincent Kompany also got in on the act. That’s nine names sharing the Fantasy spoils – emphasing not only how goals flow throughout the side, but also how difficult it’s become for Fantasy managers to isolate a secure source of points within Mancini’s shuffling lineup.

Owned by a third of FPL managers, Aguero is proving the ultimate frustration – doing just enough to warrant holding him, without delivering the kind of explosive returns we saw earlier in the season, or indeed that we’ve seen of late from Robin Van Persie.

Aguero’s goal was his third in six league matches – he’s started all six but has been subbed in each one. Dzeko has four goals over the same spell, but has started just two matches. Balotelli meanwhile, also has four goals over the last six gameweeks, again starting two.

Aguero ownership and FPL price tag has held firm but, when you consider that the Argentine has returned fewer goals than the other City strikers and is priced almost 3.0 more, there’s reason to start fidgeting and considering the options elsewhere. Aguero needs to deliver a brace or more before Christmas, otherwise his ownership and price could come down with the decorations.

The Talking Point

Tottenham have been a “Digest” regular in recent weeks, with Gareth Bale, Emmanuel Adeabyor and Rafael Van der Vaart staple ingredients in the gameweek round-up. Once again it’s Spurs, and in particular Van der Vaart, who are at the centre of the main issue troubling Fantasy managers this week.

Having made a satisfactory recovery from a hamstring injury, Van der Vaart found himself confined to bench duty for the 3-0 win over Bolton, emerging to replace the zesty Aaaron Lennon late on. While the Dutchman sat in reserve, Lennon and the frighteningly consistent Bale, tore up the Bolton defence and laid further claims for slots in our Fantasy squads. Jeramain Defoe took up Van der Vaart’s place and scored again – making Harry Redknapp’s team-sheet headache that little more intense.

Bale’s form is a force of nature with few defences able to withstand his pace and power. He has become a priority target in the Spurs lineup, a status only boosted by this recent turn in fortunes for Van der Vaart. Lennon too, for a player available for just 7.2 in the FPL, will surely attract further interest from those looking to maximise their allocation of Tottenham’s attacking players.

This all leaves Van der Vaart’s future in our Fantasy squads as far from certain. We’re seeing heavy FPL sales and, as Nani hints at emerging from a recent slump to help inspire United over a run of favourable games, there is a clearly defined exit route outside of Harry’s squad.

It’s now a question of timing. Do we hold Van der Vaart and wait to see what Harry conjurs up with his lineup at Stoke, or take him on his word and decide that Van der Vaart’s hamstring will indeed be wrapped in cotton wool over the busy Christmas period.

Tottenham’s performance against Bolton would suggest that Harry can afford to keep the Dutchman preserved, but shedding one of the Premier League’s biggest Fantasy damage dealers is never going to feel comfortable, regardless of the logic behind it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Argh that final section may have finally convinced me to part with VdV.
He's going to be a rotation nightmare, only gets 65 minutes most the time if he does start, has replacements available.

Probably going to have to give in and get Bale too.

I honestly think Rooney wil outscore RVP and am bringing him in along with Vidic and Eagles for an 8 point hit.. Eagles because I have to downgrade a MF to afford Rooney...

As I am taking such a hit I want to go the whole hog and captain him.. If it pays off great, if it doesn't I still prefer the look of my team over xmas

Well I have the same strikers and basically the same mid but have VDV. Was thinking VDV to c6m mid and then I can get Vidic. Fancy Vidic to do well in next few weeks and he's always liable to pop up with a goal.

Not sure about Eagles but I guess you don't have too many options at that price.

What to do with VDV might be the hardest decision so far this season.

Think I've ruled out doing a straight swap to Bale and instead considering Nani but based on form that isn't a good idea, but as someone said yesterday, can we really ignore our fixtures and the fact we won't only score 1 a game all season!

Yeah it's not clear cut at all.
Pros: Penos, direct and indirect FKs, selfish git playing in an attacking side.
Cons: Made of dutch balsa wood, could see heavy rotation with Defoe and Lennon coming in.

I'm also considering Nani, what is your rationale for not getting Bale?

The plan is both Nani and Bale, but due to fixtures I'm going to get Nani first then plan to get Bale in about 3 weeks time when he has 3 nice fixtures in a row. need to do some other transfers to get both!

Annoyingly VDV is going down in price tonight apparently and Nani isn't playing (possibly) until Wednesday!

Someone posted in the last article the wisdom of getting 4 decent Defenders in, such is the paucity of decent 6m midfielders with decent fixtures.

I'm leaning this way myself and am tempted to change Baines>Verm and Simpson>A Man City Defender

The obvious choice for value rising (Sorry, I'm a money slut) and points is Kompany / Richards, but is anyone sniffing around Clichy? With Koloarov out for maybe 6 weeks, he seem pretty nailed on at 5.6m ........... I'm just not sure about his assist potential.

I'd be looking at a back line of Verm / Enrique / Jones / A Man City dude

Clichy would free up around 1.2m dosh to upgrade one of Ade / Dyer / Walters whenever the need strikes, or injuries take their toll

I have Verm, Enrique and Raylor but have been thinking about switching Raylor or Brown for Jones or Smalling. A strong defense is unorthodox, though, and these heretical thoughts will probably join Taarabt, Moses & Drenthe in the "seemed like a good idea at the time" bin in a couple of gameweeks.

So, I'm steeling myself to get through to Sunday without hitting the button on any transfers

I'm not convinced with the bit about Yakubu.

They face a Sunderland game under new managerment - MON in his managerial history has always had a knack of solidifying his defence compared to before he arrived. Sunderland players will also be fired up and can see them moving away from the relegation zone from now on.

Rovers have 2 games, where if he's likely to score it'll be then - WBA BOLTON. They then have Liverpool Man United and after that it's approaching Wild Card time.

If you have him, of course, I'd probably hold onto him, but I don't and certainly wouldn't put him above the likes of Sturridge, RVP, Adebayor, Ba. Time will tell. The Lancashire Derby is always a heated affair too, so can see more cards being shown than at Christmas.

If you're selling any it would be 1 of the other 2.

VDV my worst buy of the season.

    Bought at 10.5. Got 3points.

Don't fancy Spurs at Stoke this week, as they seem to have pulled themselves together again now.

So thinking VDV> Nani. Would ideally wait until after tomorrows game, but VDV is due to drop again tonight.

    Leaves me with

    Vorm/Krul
    Jagielka, Shawx, Raylor, Naylor, Brown
    Nani, Bale, Ramsey, Sess, Walters
    Rooney, Van Persie, Ba

    0.3 in the bank.

Based on your post below with getting of Yakubu, I will keep hold of VDV then!

In fairness I got rid of Adebayor for Bendtner to fund the VDV move before Ade started his scoring streak!

I've been sitting on the fence with the VDV dilemma too, but the news that a price drop is expected tonight is forcing my hand. Bought at 9.8 I stand to get 10m if I sell tonight, but for who?

      Nani or Mata?

I'm going with Nani, purely because I think the fixtures favour him a bit more.

I would like to have Mata in aswell, but can't quite quite squeeze him in (was considering downgrading Rooney to do it, but Hernandez injury has changed that).

Hernandez injury should also help Nani aswell I would say.

Id laugh if I wasnt crying. I sold Yakubu last week for Adebayor, given that Id not have been able to afford him if I didnt make the move then, and I was getting killed not having him.

Oh, and it cost me a 4 point hit to do it.

Moral of the story, dont take my advice!

Is that a first? The only scorer in a 1-0 win gets no baps! Just show how costly those shots off target are...

On a brighter note, took a 12pt hit and got my first (small) green arrow for weeks and a better squad going forward. It can be ok! 🙂

I agree. But it sooo tempting to put in Rooney considering the fixtures of ManU and considering Silva is up against Chelsea and Arsenal, + an important CL match, which could mean bench in near future as well.

I already did VDV > Young, so I covered ManU a bit already. But Rooney is tempting, especially with the frustration Suarez has been causing for me lately.

Anybody know where I could get data on assists from throughout premier league history?
Me and a mate at the pub were trying to decide who would've been the better fantasy prospect between Scholes, Giggs and Beckham when they were all at United and they have relatively similar number of goals scored - my argument was that Beckhams set plays would have lead to a lot of assists.

I'd imagine Beckham would have been highest followed by Giggs then Scholes. On last years BP systems Scholes would have done well but on this years Giggs would have probably done better.

        not at all,

its more than that.e.g who expected them to keep a cleanie at anfield(swansea)?
even this week, vorm sounded like a better choice.

i've got most of the decisions right though . benched vorm when they were at home to manu(fulham kept a cleanie at sunderland that week) and nearly got a cleanie every week earlier on.

          You don't get it.
You only have (or should only have) that combo because of their perfect Home/Away rotation.
If you don't rotate them home/away, you shouldn't have that combo.
Plus, Schwarzer had the better defensive fixture this week anyway.
