Nemanja Vidic has suffered suspected knee ligament damage in tonight’s 2-1 Champions League defeat in Basel.

Vidic was stretchered from the proceedings a couple of minutes before half-time to be replaced by Jonny Evans with his team 1-0 down. United have tonight confirmed that they will await scans before offering a prognosis on the injury, although their early report indicates that the player himself fears he has sustained medial ligament damage having left the stadium on crutches.

The possibility of the United skipper being sidelined suddenly offers up a few quandaries for Fantasy managers.

There’s no doubt his return from a calf injury in gameweek 10 had an immediate effect on a previously shaky back line. The last five games have seen United return four clean sheets, with only a Demba Ba penalty preventing a clean sweep. Ahead of a favourable run of fixtures, the likes of Phil Jones have been transferred in by vast number of Fantasy numbers, with the champions’ defence looking formidable with Vidic alongside Rio Ferdinand in the heart of the back-four.

An absence for Vidic would surely have a significant effect on the plans of Fantasy managers. If he is out, only Patrice Evra could be the closest United defender to being nailed on but their resilience will surely drop without their skipper- can we really expect the same sort of defensive returns?

Jonny Evans could be set for a recall to the first team, having missed the last four and at 4.5 in FPL, could perhaps be a decent punt, given the cut-price outlay required. It remains to be seen how much game time he’d get if Vidic is confirmed as sidelined for a prolonged spell, although it’s worth noting that Alex Ferguson played him in nine of United’s first ten fixtures.

Phil Jones, at 6.4 and rising, looks set for more investment, with his adaptability vital to his game time, while Chris Smalling, at 5.2, could also come into plenty folks’ thinking.

We await further news from the United camp in the next 24-hours.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Thank you Steven Taylor for holding your price for the extra day. If he was going to go down yesterday, I was going to bring in Vidic for him. Went for Enrique instead today.

So bringing Suarez in before the Fulham game now not looking so clever....let's hope for a smash and grab against QPR before the inevitable ban arrives. Demba Ba, start warming up, you could well be drafted in next week.

Assuming Suarez gets a ban for next week, anyone considering Carroll? Surely he's guaranteed starts and could be a great differential for LIV's run of games?

So, outline transfer plan up to the DGW - any major issues with this (other than its 5 weeks away)?

GW16: Suarez -> Ba (assuming he gets banned)
    GW17: Brown -> Enrqiue
    GW18: Ba -> Studge
    GW19: No transfer
    GW20: Verm & Sinclair -> Jags & Bale

Would leave me with the below - enough DGW coverage?

    Westwood, Ruddy
P Jones, Enrique, Jags, Simpson, Wilko
    Silva, VDV, Bale, Ramsey, Reo-Coker
    RVP, Adebayor, Studge

Good outcome. However there are still question marks hanging over VDV and Ramsey, Westwood, Ruddy, and Wilko. Would you really stick with them in your team up until GW20 if things don't turn out as you expect? You might need an exit strategy as you go because you are banking that things will be fine with them

I think I will probably just play Westwood most weeks until I wildcard (pencilled in GW24), so Ruddy should only feature 3 times in the next 9 weeks. Not sure it's worth using a transfer to sort out the keeper issue, unless of course Westwood loses his place when one of the other 2 SUN keepers come back.

Wilko is fairly nailed on (I think), so unless he gets injured he can stay in there as a 4.0m cheapie that will rarely be used.

That leaves VDV and Ramsey - I actually really fancy VDV to come out flying over the next few weeks - his place is under threat for the first time and he seems the sort who will have a massive point to prove to Arry. Ramsey is the biggest doubt for me, although he is our most attacking central midfielder and has good fixtures, so will probably hold on.

If (it's a big IF) Drenthe recovers from his mystery injury and works his way back into the Everton side then at some point before the DGW I'd try to work him into your team instead of Rambo. Even if you have to take a hit I reckon it could be worth it.

By the time the DGW comes along I want Ade, VDV, Bale, Hibbert and Drenthe in my team (already have 4 of them mind you)

    Morning dead zoners

So I'm pleased I held off on switching baines to vidic until after last night. That would have been gutting.

I only saw the 1st 15 mins, I realise they lost but generally how did UTD play. Most interested in whether Rooney stayed up front. I know he missed a sitter early but anything else happen afterwards?

I'd let the dust settle before bringing in United DF coverage now. My guess is that the DF will be:

      Smalling Evans Rio Evra

with Jones continuing in MF. However, never try to 2nd guess SAF. It could just as easily be:

Fabio/Rafeal Rio Jones Evra on any given GW (providing the Da Silva twins arent broken)

It could indeed. Like I said before it's fairly futile trying to 2nd guess Fergie. But if pressed I think it will be the old:

So now that Vidic is looking like he will be out for a while my attention focuses away from utd defence and I am now looking to switch Baines to Enrique. Liverpool have a nice run of fixtures.. Enrique at his old price 5.0 was cracking value. Not so much anymore but still a good purchase.

I'd definitely consider Smalling for this GW though as it's likely he will play against Wolves. Then you can always swap for Enrique if it turns out that Smalling isn't getting enough gametime in the future.

Great to hear Nani played well last night. It was too late for me to watch (3:45am in China) but the first thing I did was read the commentary from Sky sports and watched some short highlights before work.

Nani seemed to be at the heart of every Utd chance (and there were many). It bodes well for my transfer this week.

Strange as it is to say, Nani is actually a differential for my mini-league now. None of the top players have him anymore. A double figure return this weekend would definitely help me claw back some ground lost over the last few GWs not having Bale.

Oh and VDV actually playing for achange.....

Nani was the best, but he's no one man team. He needs others creating space and feeding him in dangerous areas.

The good thing about that is that many have got rid so if/when he does start scoring again then not so many will have him. He'll also decrease Bale's and Ade's scoring too just by being a points hogging machine as per usual.

Wrong person to ask really šŸ˜‰ I can't stand the sight of expensive defenders.

But Walker is far too expensive for his returns IMO. BAE + Enrique + Cheap?

Smalling looks worth a punt for me now. £5.2m for a Utd defender is cheap as chips.

Can always have McAuley or Naylor come off my bench if Smalling doesn't start.

Would allow me to do Kompany to Vermaelen after the Citeh game and add Mata for Sinclair next week for Wigan.

Smalling was dazed and got a standing 8 count after Vidic hit him on the head when they both went for a cross into their box...

I only watched first 30min and ManU looked rattled.

Pretty easy decision actually as would have been another 4 point hit.. already took one.. Vidic being injured may jsut do me a favour as can see it being tight at the emirates... looking at a replacement for Sessegnon next GW as Sunderland have 2 away and Im looking for a mid at 6.2 or less, who do you prefer out of this lot?

Drenthe (assuming healthy by 17/12) (NOR, SWA)
    Cabaye (SWA, WBA)
    Jarvis or O'Hara (STK, NOR)
    Murphy (BOL, MUN)
Sinclair (new, eve) road ties but high up on the watchlist

its between drenthe and cabaye seemingly for me, for their potential, though not much form to feel confident about. Drenthe then has two away ties that have possible returns, then the DGW. Am I drunk on fixtures or am i missing another prospect?

It's a motley crew to pick from!

Probably O'Hara of that lot... if you can't afford the more reliable Walters/Larsson types, I (generally) think you need to go for high potential in cheap mids. O'Hara is the definition of hit or miss, but his hits are pretty high.

I'd try to find the extra funds to grab Walters or Larsson if you can.

id probably go sturridge to Ba. rest of team looks solid so save the extra transfer. or you could go vdv->bale. If you think VDV will play though i may not do it. You can always do that transfer next week.
not excited about dropping sturridge but with mata coverage and chelsea fixtures, you should be alright. ba should get quite the haul over the next few GWs.

Newcastle's fixtures look so favorable though...

and Gower is a sleeper cheap mid!

I don't think I have the heart to part with Rooney if i've stuck with him since the beginning. Maybe the run of favorable fixtures for man u will get rooney back in form.

I just know there are better options than keeping Milner on my team.

Or just not change this week and wait till I have 2 FT next GW.

I just feel that Nani would be enough United coverage as they are not really battering teams at the moment, and you'd be left behind when RVP keeps his scoring streak. If you're just looking for a straight swap for Miler then Arteta is good shout.

Guess you could always play the 3 of Raylor, Richards and BAE, but personally I wont be comfortable with 3 Norwich defenders especially when 1 of them isnt even starting.

Just about. Jones looks the best bet if you can afford him. He's our new CM

My initial guess on the United backline for majority of the Premier League games:
Smalling - Jones - Rio (Evans for few) - Evra
Allows rotation of 5 key defenders in the back, instead of 4 if Jones plays MF.

    Europa backline šŸ˜‰ : Rafael/Smalling - Evans - Rio/Jones - Fabio

SAF won't play Jones in midfield cos he can't afford all his 5 key defenders on the pitch at the same time.

    Thoughts?

Good point about Jones not playing midfield. I actually hope for United's sake that Smalling plays CB and Jones RB. The other way around doesn't work as well IMO

I'd think Smalling & Jones are interchangeable. Smalling being the more experienced one should be deployed whichever position requires more defending. For instance, against AVL, he kept Gabby out & I reckon he could keep playing there this weekend to keep Jarvis out. All this just speculation though šŸ˜‰

Am I the only one that thinks Evans is pure garbage and a huge liability in the back line? Always committing idiotic fouls near/in the box..

Rio's rep has been falling off as well.

No your not the only one. I think he's gash.

But having said that his performances this year have been better than last years

As soon is Rafeal comes back to full fitness the RB role is up for grabs. He's a very handy player both going forward and defensively. Until then it seems a safe bet that Elinors team will be the line-up.

But I still feel Jones could feature in CM as there is nobody else who can anchor and tackle like he can. Fletch used to have it in him but alas.......

Don't forget that we still have a CM injury crisis with Ando and Cleverly out for a while

We haven't seen Rafael this season to make a judgement on him, I suspect it will be a while even after he's fit for him to get back in the starting 11.

Carrick does a decent job. For the other position, you have Giggs (always handy in big games) and Fletcher (still decent on the ball). With Vidic's exit, Jones is really required at the back IMO.

Yes, he might get assists. But he's more likely to get goals 1) poacher 2) selfish.

He's scored in the last 3 games, 2 of which were against tough defences & away.

Get him in or regret it šŸ˜‰

Still needing advice as well please!

My team at present is as follows:

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Enrique, Williams, Jones (Richards)
    VDV, Sessegnon, Silva, Sinclair (Rodwell)
    Ba, Ade, RVP

Not sure about what transfers to make this week. Only have 1 FT available, and 0.2 in the bank.

    What yall think? šŸ™‚

VDV to bale/mata to free up funds? or save that for next week when you have 2 ft to make use of that extra money and if mata he has better fixtures

So, I'd been planning to get Nani in this week for a while now. How nailed on is he for Wolves given 90 mins last night? And is VDV -> Nani sensible or stupid?

4pt hit for me if I get Evans/Jones/Nani.

      50% nailed on.

He's due a rest. And now's the best chance. Valencia & Young are likely to fill in. Rooney & Welbeck upfront.

In a burst of anger last night I transferred out Rooney and Allen for Ba and Nani for a 4pt hit.
I should perhaps have thought it more through, but do you guys think I'll still profit?

I actually think that sounds a fairly sound move. Yes, Rooney could tear it up this week, but on current form it seems unlikely.
