Our Watchlist rankings, offering player recommendations over the Christmas programme, are now updated and available in the sidebar. This week’s update, in line with yesterday’s “Frisking of the Fixturesâ€, finds United’s assets blinking brightly on our radar as they enjoy a favourable festive spell.

David De Gea is the only significant mover in our goalkeeper rankings. The United stopper was once again rested for the 1-0 victory at Villa last weekend, another warning that the Spaniard is far from secure, particularly around Champions League fixtures. Even so, with the group stages ending tonight, De Gea’s starting role could just be cemented over the Christmas period. There’s always risk but that also applies to every member of the United back four – with Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic perhaps the only exceptions. At least with De Gea, the auto-sub as a result of a 10-minute cameo from the bench won’t be a problem.

This is certainly the issue with Phil Jones. While the former Blackburn man climbs into our top five defenders, there’s little doubt that he still remains a rotation risk, despite starting more games than any other United player this term. Jones earned a midfield role at Villa, with Chris Smalling taking up the right-back spot. There’s every possibility that Jones will start all United’s games over the Christmas period, but with obvious options in defence and central midfield, it seems likely that he will be subject to some rest and rotation. Having said that, without a big outlay on the aforementioned Evra and Vidic, Fantasy managers have no better option within a United back four that looks destined for further defensive profits, having secure four clean sheets in five.

Newcastle’s Ryan Taylor suffers a slight dip in his Watchlist ranking, hanging on to a top five placing while we consider the impact of Newcastle’s injuries for their trip to Norwich this weekend. Taylor has more than enough attacking potential in his locker to cover for the lack of clean sheets while both Steven Taylor, and possibly Fabricio Collicini, sit out.

Blackburn’s Chris Samba is the notable new entry in our rankings. Restored to the Rovers defence, the club skipper could not prevent his side leaking two more goals at home to Swansea last weekend. There’s little doubt that Samba is a consideration for his value at the attacking end of the field – although with Ewood Park clashes against West Brom and Bolton to come, Samba could sneak an unlikely clean sheet if he can form an effective barrier with Scott Dann.

Gareth Bale does the unthinkable and knocks David Silva off the top of the midfielder rankings – clear indication of how far the Welshman has come this season as a Fantasy prospect. Bale is now a prime asset, clearly capable of delivering consistent returns, at least while Tottenham remain in the kind of attacking form that has brought them 10 wins in 11 matches.

Bale’s ascent is aided by the injury to Rafael Van der Vaart that has seen his starting role at risk for the weekend trip to Stoke and, indeed, placed increased rotation risk on the Dutchman over the busy Christmas period. While Bale will not be absolutely immune to rotation with Steven Pienaar and even Luka Modric an option on Tottenham’s left, it seems unthinkable that he will be rotated right now. The same cannot be said for Van der Vaart while Harry Redknapp struggles to keep the in-form Jermain Defoe on the leash.

While Silva drops to second spot, United’s Nani also enjoys a climb back into our reckoning and top five midfield prospects. United’s fixtures look set to offer stronger potential for goals, while the injury to Javier Hernandez saw Nani pushed up in support of Wayne Rooney at Villa Park last weekend. Danny Welbeck will be expected to take up that role over the Christmas fixtures, but the loss of Hernandez will likely put place more responsibility on Nani to find goals and could also firm up his starting role in the face of opposition from Ashley Young, Valencia and Ji-Sung Park for the flank positions. Nani is the obvious replacement for those suffering from Van der Vaart cold feet.

The North London pairing of Robin Van Persie and Emmanuel Adebayor maintain the top rankings in our forward listings. They are joined in the top three by Blackburn’s Yakubu, who edges ahead of Newcastle’s Demba Ba on the basis of his cheaper price tag. Both Ba and Yakubu have kind Christmas fixtures that make them obvious candidates for our frontlines, in tandem with the more expensive Van Persie. The aforementioned Danny Welbeck is another consideration in the same price bracket, although we’re wary of his prospects right now until we’ve seen evidence of Alex Ferguson’s intent for his forward line.

City’s Sergio Aguero has clear potential to explode over Christmas but has continued to offer stuttering returns that struggle to justify his hefty price tag. Rotation over Christmas is an obvious threat in the City attack, adding to the appeal of the cheaper strikers elsewhere, who look more assured of starts if they can remain fit.

Shane Long and Steven Fletcher fall into that bracket – both vital to their side’s prospects over Christmas, we should expect their presence on the team-sheet; the duo are also displaying form that suggests they are worthy of consideration should Ba and Yakubu be overlooked in our lineups.

Wayne Rooney is perhaps the most interesting prospect over the Christmas fixtures. His Fantasy form has slumped alarmingly having been deployed in a deeper role in recent weeks. The injury to Hernandez will likely see his partnership with Welbeck restored however. Rooney enjoyed his best scoring form in tandem with Welbeck earlier in the season and, should Alex Ferguson charge his side with greater attacking intent, he could start returning profits once again. That would provide an effective differential for those willing to gamble on improved form. The big question is whether either Rooney or Aguero can discover form that can truly threaten to outscore Van Persie and displace the Arsenal main as the top price forward of choice. Right now, form and fixtures remain firmly in favour of Van Persie, who continues to claim the Fantasy Premier League captaincy from all but the bravest of Fantasy managers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

team at present (after making my one FT) is:

    Vorm Given
    Kompany Enrique Brown Raylor Hall
    Bale VDV Eagles Silva Allen
    RVP Ade Studge

    2.5 in the bank

Contemplating two possible moves but will probably only make one of them:

VDV to Nani - fed up with the will he/won't he saga of VDV and have other Spurs cover
Kompany to Jones (can also afford Hall or Brown to Jones but it would leave all my cash tied up and limit my options in the coming weeks.)

Im keeping VDV but as you have Bale & Ade it makes sense to get Nani in for him. Also, get Rodwell for Allen. Rodwell and Eagles rotate perfectly, giving you:

I'm doing the same, have Eagles, will get JR next week. Hopefully it will do well. Over the last 6 GW's Eagles is the 5th highest midfielder in the league when it comes to attempt on goals. Rodwell is very high up aswell considering he's played half as many minutes as everyone else. Think he's had 9 attempts in 200 or so minutes...

You could find rotation fixtures like this for god knows how many budget players, it rarely pays off. I see 2 pointers for either of those players in the games against Villa, Swansea, Newcastle, and Tottenham. In the meantime, you're wasting a valuable midfield spot.

Who cares as long as there is the big double figure score in one or two fixtures? Midfield slots aren't that valuable, which budget players are scoring well? Who cares as long as there is the big double figure score in one or two fixtures? Midfield slots aren't that valuable, which budget players are scoring well? Like i said above, both are getting shots on goal, Rodwell was getting in the box loads before he got injured.

Take out the complete fluke 5-0 against Stoke, and show me a big score from Eagles in a home game? And Bolton have lost 3 on the trot. Show me ANY big score from Rodwell in a home game? And Everton have just lost at home to Stoke, and look poor in general. This has got disappointment all over it, you're screwing up your midfield. It's just another ridiculous idea that spreads on this site. Silva / VDV / Bale / Nani / Mata will all be bringing in the big points over the next month or so.

You are right, let me get Silva, Nani, VDV, Bale and Mata into my midfield....
You need some cheap ones! In my opinion, these two are as good as any over the next few weeks.

I would be unsure about paying out for vermaelen until the shape/solidity of Arsenal's defence is confirmed following Santos' injury.
Barfa doesn't look good to me. I really think Newcastle may struggle for a while.

Team looks great but bench is poor. Can guarantee you'll have a week soon with one of your 1st 11 not played and an injury and a suspension.

Then you'll be chasing the free transfers just to keep up.

Your team looks sound enough, if it was me I'd be looking to strenghten those guys on your bench (which won't be easy) so I'd save my transfer for next week. Your not going to crazy on transfer hits but the signs are there that you chase previous gw points, so look to make transfers that'll look the part for the next 5/6 gw's including the DGW.

Probably not the last time I brag about this but here it is; I got Yaya 4 weeks ago, since then:

    Yaya - 9, 6, 2, 10 = 27

Believe it, he honestly is a cheaper differential! It's last year all over again lol.

you have made reconsider my transfers. Was looking at Ba > Graham/Morision in GW18/19 to free up cash for Vidic, but I now think that Silva - Yaya will be a better bet and it allows me to get Studge in for Ba if I wanted to. Each week I become less convinced that Silva is a season keeper.

Well this time round it's Tottenham and Everton. They will both play twice in one single FPL gameweek, therefore you'd be looking to stock up on both teams as they'll be getting double points effectively. You can thank the southern fairies for that!

Hi lads, I've already made a 4 point hit to avoid price rises/falls and do Hernandez - Ba and S Taylor - Vermaelen. Do you reckon it's worth an 8 pointer to do VDV to Nani too? Never done an 8 pointer before and would imagine they rarely pay off, but just fancy Nani's prospects in the coming weeks with their fixtures and fed up of seeing VDV's price plummet and continued doubts over his selection.

    Rest of team is:

    Krul, Vorm

    Vermaelen, Jones, Enrique, Walker, Brown

    Silva, VDV, Walters, Drenthe, Dyer

    RVP, Adebayor, Ba

    1.5 in bank

the key is in your comment "in the coming weeks." Treat the extra transfer as one single 4 pointer rather than an 8-pointer and if you think it will pay off "in the coming weeks" then go for it. If youre hunch is right, Nani only needs to score one more goal than VDV over several weeks to have made it worth it.

    Good afternoon,

I think my current dilemna encompasses a lot of the issues being spoken about on this forum, and I think a vote on the options I have outlined will outline people's opinions on potential:

    Vorm/Westwood
    Enrique, Vermaelen, N.Taylor, R.Taylor
    Silva, Bale, VDV, Drenthe, Dyer
    RVP, Rooney, Yakubu

    2 FT...options...

    1 Rooney+VDV >>Ba+Nani
    2.Rooney+Dyer >>Ba+Mata
    3.Rooney+Dyer >>Sturridge+Nani
    4.Rooney+Dyer+VDV >> Ba+Nata+Nani (4point hit)
5.VDV >>Nani (Keep spare FT for next week)
    6.Rooney+Drenthe >>Ba+Nani
    7.Rooney+Drenthe+Enrique >> Ba+Nani+Jones (4point hit)

bit too much info and far too many options there mate. try narrowing it down to no more than three options. otherwise some wisecrack will say "give me your username and password and I'll manage the whole damn team for you."

good team as it is to be honest. without knowing how much cash you have it's hard to recommend much.

Not relevant to your team, but you spelt dilemma wrong. Until last week I spelt it the same as you, and was sure I was right, but google tells me otherwise, and I couldn't work out why I'd been taught or had learnt it wrong.

nice one jukesy. on the subject of misspellings, my current pet hate is the use of "invite" as a noun, as in "send me an invite". One sends an invitation to invite someone to dinner.

cheers lads! i know, way too many ideas there alright. mad how you spelt it the same as I did. because it makes no phonetical sense having an 'n'. it must be spelt that way sometimes, no?
feck eagles. he's shite. i'd like to keep drenthe if possible. sick of rooney. might hold him for one more week though..i'd like ba and nani. vdv is annoying me too. cheers anyways

Captain question with the holiday fixtures approaching:
What happens if both your captain and vice captain do not play? Do you get no points doubled, or is there a system for determining the third choice player?
Am wondering because a game week in which both RVP and VDV are rested does not seem so farfetched. Makes keeping Rooney through the period appealing not only because of fixtures but also because of consistency, in that he would make a great vice captain to ensure some results getting doubled. Or this could be a longwinded rationalization to break up with VDV, once and for all (cue recording of the last eight times I've promised to do so).

Think VDV is on his way out of your team if you ask me.

Thanks for the responses. Just trying to figure out if I will dump him via tweet, text, or voicemail after the CL matches sort out who I will bring in.

What do you think about my team?

    Vorm, Westwood
    Jones, Enrique, Kompany, Simpson, Naylor
    VdV, Silva, Bale, Walters, Dyer
    Ba, RvP, Adebayor

    £0,2m bank and 1FT

Decent. As well as they are playing im not keen on 3 Spurs players. I'd lose VDV for Mata or Nani.

Those are some good players you are ditching to put all your Man U options at the back

No thanks - I'm bad for taking hits but nothing like your history! If you want to climb the rankings, that needs to change.

Too much Man U - you don't need them all.

You will also want Adebayor back next week.
