We were struggling this week. Crippled by a cold that was verging on deadly man-flu, I made a miracle recovery without the aid of placenta treatment to struggle into the studio to infect/accompany Mark on another podcast.

My ailments were not my only curse; only last weekend my extraordinary run of missing out on penalty saves continued when Tim Krul (no pun intended, but I’ll take it), palmed away Lampard’s effort. Inevitably, I’d left the Dutchman on my bench.

Mark refuses to buy the fact I’ve missed out on a penalty save for five years, diverting the discussion towards the mini-league gap, chatter on Van der Vaart and debate over United’s plight at both ends of the field.

The usual smattering of regulars are all present and semi-correct – if you can understand a word I’m saying, you might just enjoy it all.

Is the Martin O'Neill effect enough to make me Start Westwood over Vorm. both at home but Swansea better at home and Blackburn haven't looked to bad recently and Fulham bad travellers

You have a choice between a strong defence against a team struggling for goals or a team in bad form against a team that are scoring a lot of goals. I know who I'd play.

Vorm's record speaks for itself. So does Fulhams.

Ruiz will probably score a hattrick now, mind.

evening chaps, trying to finalise my team for this week and would appreciate some imput on these 2 decisions:

play b.johnson (at home against a decimated newc defence) over walters
transfer long in for sturridge (hes done decent recently but needs several chances to score and against city he isn't going to be facing a defensively inept ryan taylor - i would swop long back for sturridge for wigan)

    what do you think?

      Oooh hello Gus!
I'm playing B. Johnson, have a feeling he'll get an assist. If you have no other transfers to make then I don't see why you shouldn't do Sturridge > Long for 1 week if you have no other pressing transfers, but can you afford Ba instead of Long?

Drenthe. I think (hope) Newcastle will be more attacking to make up for them inevitably conceding more goals now.

yea i would play johnson over him as drenthe may not even feature - the thing about newcastle is that when they were doing so well they had their entire first 11 featuring every week, that scenario has completely changed now and it will make a difference, the tiote/cabaye axis in the midfield for newcastle was crucial to their early season form and now they have an untested gosling being thrown into action against a norwich side who are a match for anyone - i don't honestly know if newcastle will cope with their injury crisis

      Play Walters.

Sturridge to Long to Sturridge isn't really worth it for me. Sturridge can score against City who are hardly fortress-like at the back.

true, but my team is basically sorted until xmas so i really don't mind using 2 transfers (i have a crucial head to head this week so im trying to get my team selection absolutely bang on)

Nice work to have your team sorted for the next couple of weeks. I envy your prepardness. Long is a decent shout in that case. Good chance of nabbing a goal this week.

Walters is always liable to do something at home, with penalties, aerial threat from corners, nuisance value on the end of all the long balls. Stoke will still see plenty of the ball even if Spurs are generally on top. Johnson plays that bit deeper so I'd go with Walters.

it took alot of discipline but at least i should have a decent side to field every week now, just in need of the odd differential and long at home to the worst team in the league fits the bill nicely

Right, you want a surprise differential right under your nose? Alright... Samir "Judas" Nasri. Ownership 4.6%, £9.2m.

The obvious objection is gametime. So first, how has he used this gametime? Nasri has 58 points from 743 minutes. For comparison, the almighty #1 Silva has 87 points from 1092 minutes. So the gap in gametime is not as colossal as you might think. More to the point, Nasri has 0.078 points per minute whiled Silva has a fittingly identical 0.079 points per minute. Nasri clearly delivers when played and has done so alongside Silva on multiple occasions.

Now look at his absences. In the 13 GWs since signing, every single match he didn't play the full 90 was within 4 days of a Champions League match. For example, both matches he missed (15/10 and 5/11) were neighboured by CL ties (18/10 and 2/11). A 30 minute appearance on 10/9 was followed by a CL tie on 14/9. The 16 minute appearance against Man Utd, even, was following the CL tie on 18/10. Even the recent respectable gametimes of 64 minutes against Liverpool and 68 minutes against Norwich were bookended by CL ties. So it's clear the only reason for his absence was the Champions League... which is gone now.

Add that to coach Platt's comments that City can't defend as well anymore because their new personnel possess only attacking qualities, and you realize City are committed to attack and and Silva and Nasri playing together every game becomes the norm. Like VDV and Bale but with an even better attack and both actually playing.

Of course City are in the Europa League. But if you can ask yourself the question "Will Nasri really be a regular in the Europa League" and answer "no", you know what to do...

yes but some might not want to have that rotation risk at a cost of 9.2. you basically would never have the chance to captain him because of that risk - whereas other players in that bracket you could have better confidence in giving the armband. there will be times when you may want a City attacking captain - nasri is not that.

Well, people do captain Aguero and sometimes I read talk of captaining Silva. We do that even though both are slight rotation risks and I'm saying with the CL exit Nasri drops to that same rotation risk. Hence he's as captain worthy as they are. Clearly I'd test if my prediction is true before jumping in to Nasri (C) - I prefer Silva (C) over him anyway as I see Nasri as more explosive but less consistent.

Aguero and Silva are still very much first choice though, and even more so now the Champs league is over. The Prem is their biggest trophy left so I'd expect them to play the stars in there.

Adam Johnson is another player with better returns than Nasri at a lower cost. 423 mins with 4 goals and 3 assists.

I'd love to play Johnson if he was a regular. But it's pretty clear from the minutes and manner of his appearances that he's behind Nasri in the pecking order. Since Nasri arrived Johnson has 3 starts and 5 sub appearances ranging between 10 and 28 minutes. Nasri has 9 starts and 2 sub appearances. The particular fixtures each played also would affect their scores naturally.

Since arriving, Nasri is ahead of of Milner (8 starts 1 sub) and Johnson (3 starts 5 subs) despite being first choice in CL. He's only behind Yaya and Silva, the former of which doesn't play in his position. Seems clear to me he'll move from a CL starting place to a PL one.

There's a good few 10s but form or the very same rotation problem is currently causing the very same doubts. I stuck with Nani over something like 8 barren gameweeks. VDV everyone knows about his absences and many are selling. Bale is slightly cheaper and thus not so hard to squeeze in. I'd say points for mids aren't that easy now, certainly less obvious than strikers.

I'd be daft not to cover the usual suspects so I currently have Bale, VDV, Silva having earlier ditched Nani. It's not a case of dropping the golden goose - I reckon I could upgrade Ramsey to Nasri and go for the killer four. Coverage does worry me though 😮

      I think it is good.
The defence have a great chance of getting cleanies
Midfield is great especially if Stoke continue to concede.
Frontline is good but I wouldn't have gone for the Yak.

ironically enough I haven't brought him in yet, so who do you suggest I replace Hernandez with then, do want to go higher than 5.7 as it allows me to switch Brunt for Mata later on.

Big Dog Mark is looking at Nani, not even a mention of Mata. His transfers seem to be working, hmmmm...

Kompany a season keeper in my opinion, City will have 100% concentration on league now. Just won't start him for Chelsea or Arsenal games

I just think City's inabilty to keep a CS in addition to the fact that ShawX is a good a goal threat as Komps and with Stoke now qualified in EL, fielding a weakend team we should get back to the Stoke of old which ShawX at 1.1 cheaper a better option IMO

I reckon Huth is now the best option as a stoke defender.

      2nd for me.

Tough one. Are you playing McAuley, Jones and NTaylor? Maybe play Richards over Taylor and then Vorm in goal? If benching Richards then go for Westwood.

Utd haven't been scoring for fun recently. Investment in their attacking players is risky.

Question mark over Bendtner's fitness. So, Bendtner out Ba in for me.

Is anybody expecting a new manager bounce from Sunderland? Or will they just continue to flatter to deceive?
