A late, late stunner from Seb Larsson gives Martin O’Neill plenty to smile about at the Stadium of Light. Rafael Van der Vaart returns to the Tottenham first-team but endures a frustrating afternoon as Matthew Etherington steals the limelight to end his old club’s unbeaten run:

Phil Bardsley
The left-back enjoyed a productive first game under Martin O’Neill’s stewardship, earning both assists in the 2-1 win. Bardsley’s presence in the Blackburn half was noticeable as he foraged forward time and time again, firing in crosses and efforts on goal. Clearly, in terms of offering attacking intent, he looks to be the key Fantasy target in the Sunderland defence. At 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), you’ll pay that little bit more, but, with clean sheets so unreliable as a source of points, Bardsley’s attacking potential could well be worth paying for.

Seb Larsson
The Swede’s ability from a dead-ball was again on show as he stepped up to curl home a dramatic late winner. Having missed from the spot at Wolves last weekend, Larsson redeemed himself with a wonderfully flighted effort that gave him his fifth goal of the season. With four assists and 11 FPL bonus also in his locker, Larsson has now clearly emerged as the top midfield prospect within the Sunderland camp. Set-piece delivery is set to be crucial to the Black Cats under O’Neill, which seems likely to see Larsson develop as an even more significant factor in their ascent up the table.

Chris Samba
Samba was immense at the back for much of yesterday’s game, repelling attack after attack as the home side poured forward in a relentless siege on the Blackburn goal. Subject of a Watchlist article last Friday, Samba vindicated our focus on his attacking returns with an assist for Simon Vukcevic’s opener. He has now scored or assisted in each of last five ninety minute appearances and with home clashes against West Brom and Bolton up next, could once again prosper, despite his side’s inability to keep a clean sheet.

Rafael Van der Vaart
The Dutchman earned a recall to the Tottenham starting lineup as expected, with Jermain Defoe dropped to the bench. Van der Vaart suffered a quiet, unassuming match, however, failing to have the kind of impact to mirror that of Luka Modric, who drove Spurs forward in the second-half. More significantly, Emmanuel Adebayor was given the responsibility from the spot when Spurs did make the breakthrough – indication that perhaps the Togo striker has jumped above Van der Vaart in the penalty taking pecking order.

With Nani returning two goals and an assist in United’s 4-1 win over Wolves, Van der Vaart owners will be pondering the merits of a trade. However, it’s worth noting that Spurs now have two consecutive home matches, while Nani has two away trips in the same period. With a double fixture to come in gameweek 20, it’s also worth planning ahead – it’s likely that Van der Vaart will enjoy huge levels of investment for his double gameweek.

Thomas Sorensen
The Dane seems to have established himself ahead of Asmir Begovic in the Stoke goal- yesterday was his fourth start in a row. Sorensen’s 7 saves helped condemn Spurs to a first defeat since the end of August but with four of the next six away, many Fantasy managers may well look elsewhere. Two back-to back Britannia clashes against Villa and Wigan in gameweek 18-19 could be tempting, given his 4.3 price.

Ryan Shotton
Priced as a 4.0 defender, Shotton again patrolled the right flank of the Potters’ midfield and, with so many experienced defenders at his disposal, Tony Pulis definitely seems to prefer him further forward. Shotton’s eye for goal has seen him score 3 times in all competitions this term and he also possesses a throw-in similar to that of Rory Delap- always a good attribute in Pulis’ side. If he can establish himself as a first-team regular, Shotton could prove a dirt-cheap out of position alternative to help free up budgets elsewhere.

Matthew Etherington
The winger chose a showdown with his former club as the time to open his account for the season. Etherington has been mainly in the shadow of Jon Walters when it came to eyeing up Stoke midfield Fantasy prospects, with just 3 assists to his name prior to yesterday’s clash, but a 15 point haul propelled him back into consideration. At 6.4 and with just 2.7% ownership, he’s been off many a radar but Etherington has a proven Fantasy track record and typically tends to prove good value- with 59 points, he’s edged ahead of the likes of Samir Nasri in the midfield pecking order on the back of yesterday’s match-winning performance.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I expect that its just that Arry wants a regular starter taking his pens. With Defoe on such good form this year and VDV injury proneness, Rafa no longer offers him that I guess.

I've finally seen the Stoke Spurs game on TV.

I've been watching football since the 1960's and that's the worst refereeing I can remember seeing in an all British match.

In many another country you'd be suspicious. Here we can only marvel at the incompetence and sympathise with Spurs.

Worth a 4 point hit to do the following? My midfield is looking very light with Dyer and Johnson not guarenteed starts.

    Ward -> Caulker
    Dyer -> Nani
    Rooney -> Ba

Obviously seems strange to get rid of Rooney now, but having Ba + Nani seems better than Rooney + an average midfielder. The Ward transfer is purely to free up the extra cash for Ba. The alternative is bring in Yakubu and save 4 points.

honestly.. ppl on here will talk about how it's mad to remove Rooney/Baines etc lookin at fixures, form.. however if you look at their teams they wont have those guys and will have been able spread the money around better.. i do think those transfers are mint honestly

Ward nice fixtures at home coming up so sideways to Caulker, wouldn't get rid of Rooney at the moment.

If you're desperate for Nani, get rid of Silva, if not it's hard to change that.

I think Ba will do well, but I also think Rooney, Adebayor & RVP will do well so I don't think it's worth a hit to change it.

Pointless to sack any manager, in his first full season at a club, when we've got a starting XI of 8/9 new players.

I've been wondering that too. But I'm going with Nani because i knee jerked to VDV->Nani before nani's price rose. If you're looking for a differential then I'd go with mata though. Tonight's game will give us a good indication of which is better.

    Hi All,

    A long time lurker here.

As someone who reckons they are pretty decent at this game I thought I’d offer this piece of advice, it’s always worth persevering.

After a nightmare start to the season when I hadn’t picked my proper team for gameweek 1 and couldn’t log on to the FPL site to change it, I was then on holiday during GW2 and GW3 and couldn’t do any transfers.

I nearly gave up after my crap start but I’ve now managed 11 green arrows in a row and broken into the top 10,000 for the first time this season.

I could just do with Silva not playing tonight to get 13 Moses points off the bench.

I just like Liverpools upcoming fixtures and Adam seems to becoming a assist/BP darling again.

He is consistant with scores of 5 or 6 which I would prefer to 0/1/3/2

If he plays he only needs to goal hang and scuff in one or two at home to Sunderland. And then it's only a few weeks to the double. Nani is away to QPR and then Fulham and we all know his away record. I haven't decided yet, Fratboy, I'm just thinking out loud. VDV is the kind of player like Lampard where he doesn't actually need to play well in real life to generate fantasy points.

I'm reasonably happy with my team for the upcoming GW. So i'm thinking, now he's seemingly lost his starting place, of doing N.Dyer ---> Cabaye for their nice little run. Anyone got any good reasons why I shouldn't?

Apart from Newcastle looking like their bubble has burst, but I think they should recover over the next couple of games.

    Attila about?

I don't think Dyer has lost his place - I think he was just given a well-earned rest. If he doesn't start the next game then this theory is proved wrong but I don't think it will be.

Cabaye is a cracking real player. For FPL I had him from GW1-12 and was disappointed, he only returned more than 3 points on a couple of occasions.
      PRO'S
Nice fixtures, takes corners, main playmaker

      CONS
With Tiote out he seems to have dropped deeper, that may have changed though with Guthrie being injured and the more defensive Gosling coming in (I didnt watch the game so I dont know for sure). Obviously Gosling is suspended now, so that could see Alan Smith or Abeid coming in for him, in the case of Alan Smith that would be good news. Smith would operate more defensively. I havent seen enough of Abeid to know whether he'd be more defensive or attacking minded.

Now ok we havent had great results but that is down to bad luck with injuries, and worse luck with woodwork. So I dont think we have suddenly started playing shit, I find all this 'bubble burst' cliche talk a bit annoying - we did well against Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea (until Taylor went off) and I didnt see the Norwich match but with so many defensive worries I wasnt surprised to see us lose. Besides Norwich at home have been pretty good.

Back to Cabaye, we have nice fixtures - but FPL wise his returns havent been reflective of his qualities as a player. I would consider O'Hara or Vukcevic personally.

Absolutely top class mate. Much much appreciated.

Apologies for the 'bubble burst' rubbish then, didn't see the game. I personally don't think thats the case, like I said, I expect you to recover in the next couple of games and thats why I was looking for a way into your midfield. I've already got Ba and guess he should be enough.

        Cheers muchly.

    Players I want
    O'Hara, Samba, Bale, Vukcevic

    Players I no longer want
    S.Taylor 🙁 Wilkinson (bad signing)

Players I am worried about binning
    Ben Arfa 🙁
Drenthe (one of the most frustrating players I've ever had on FPL)
David Silva - he's the only way to free necessary cash, would swap for either Bale or Yaya Toure.

Tough decisions to be made, I have two freebies for the next GW but will still end up taking a points hit. Probably.

It'd only be until the wildcard, but it would be a helluva risk. I suppose the other options for downgrading would be Baines, Rooney, Adebayor.
Reluctant to downgrade Baines given their upcoming fixtures and DGW. He's a good diff in my minileague.
Rooney too has nice enough fixtures and I think he'll do well
Adebayor again has a DGW and reasonable fixtures. He's pretty solid too.

Silva makes more sense than those three I think.

Yaya will be going to ACON, if that affects your plans in anyway (could get him in, then rid him with Jan WC).

Samba is a great defender, but I would be worried about relying on a defender for assists and goals to score you points. I'm hoping Drenthe has been stuck in an alternate reality, and this week has managed to find himself back in our world this week, ready for the weekend.

Ah, ok. I personally think RVP, Rooney, Adebayor, Baines and Vermaelen take up too much money between them. I try and tinker with my team to end with as close as possible to 11 players from top 6 teams. I don't like Sunderland, Stoke, Wolves etc in fantasy terms.

I can't have both, so which one is more essential for coming weeks - tell me! I'm thinking Naninananinainaa..

    Is this too risky defence gw17 onwards;
    Enrigue, Smalling, Evans, Simpson, Wilkinson

Wilkinson stopped playing when i got him, Smalling and Evans rotation risks...are twins coming back for man united?

Gah, my 'clever' choices of Monk and Wilkinson now look anything but, having made naff all points whilst i've had them, being dropped, and their replacements doing well.

Any other options out there, for similar prices? Otherwise will have to raise cash by RVP->Roonpig.com.

So, is Mata, DVD/Silva, Bale, Nani too much cash in midfield? I could have all of them or one of them should get the chop and I should take Walters instead? I need help I am having Brunt headache, something that I needed to solve a long time ago. Every possible transfers I want it to make was better then him and for a hit too, but I haven’t. My bad.

I might downgrade Kompany and bring Mata for him or someone in the same price range as Mr. “6 blanks in a row” Brunt. But I am not very fond of Larsson and Walters fixtures for now. Why I didn’t went for Larsson 4 weeks ago (face palm). With Rodwell injured I don’t have a clue what to to.

Sunderland's fixtures don't look great but I'm very tempted to go for Larsson now anyway. They could pick up a lot under MON, he has a lot of set pieces, and alongside Walters looks the best mid priced option as far as keeping for the season goes...which with RVP/Rooney/Baines all going to be in my team as of next week, is something I need.
