A late, late stunner from Seb Larsson gives Martin O’Neill plenty to smile about at the Stadium of Light. Rafael Van der Vaart returns to the Tottenham first-team but endures a frustrating afternoon as Matthew Etherington steals the limelight to end his old club’s unbeaten run:

Phil Bardsley
The left-back enjoyed a productive first game under Martin O’Neill’s stewardship, earning both assists in the 2-1 win. Bardsley’s presence in the Blackburn half was noticeable as he foraged forward time and time again, firing in crosses and efforts on goal. Clearly, in terms of offering attacking intent, he looks to be the key Fantasy target in the Sunderland defence. At 4.8 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), you’ll pay that little bit more, but, with clean sheets so unreliable as a source of points, Bardsley’s attacking potential could well be worth paying for.

Seb Larsson
The Swede’s ability from a dead-ball was again on show as he stepped up to curl home a dramatic late winner. Having missed from the spot at Wolves last weekend, Larsson redeemed himself with a wonderfully flighted effort that gave him his fifth goal of the season. With four assists and 11 FPL bonus also in his locker, Larsson has now clearly emerged as the top midfield prospect within the Sunderland camp. Set-piece delivery is set to be crucial to the Black Cats under O’Neill, which seems likely to see Larsson develop as an even more significant factor in their ascent up the table.

Chris Samba
Samba was immense at the back for much of yesterday’s game, repelling attack after attack as the home side poured forward in a relentless siege on the Blackburn goal. Subject of a Watchlist article last Friday, Samba vindicated our focus on his attacking returns with an assist for Simon Vukcevic’s opener. He has now scored or assisted in each of last five ninety minute appearances and with home clashes against West Brom and Bolton up next, could once again prosper, despite his side’s inability to keep a clean sheet.

Rafael Van der Vaart
The Dutchman earned a recall to the Tottenham starting lineup as expected, with Jermain Defoe dropped to the bench. Van der Vaart suffered a quiet, unassuming match, however, failing to have the kind of impact to mirror that of Luka Modric, who drove Spurs forward in the second-half. More significantly, Emmanuel Adebayor was given the responsibility from the spot when Spurs did make the breakthrough – indication that perhaps the Togo striker has jumped above Van der Vaart in the penalty taking pecking order.

With Nani returning two goals and an assist in United’s 4-1 win over Wolves, Van der Vaart owners will be pondering the merits of a trade. However, it’s worth noting that Spurs now have two consecutive home matches, while Nani has two away trips in the same period. With a double fixture to come in gameweek 20, it’s also worth planning ahead – it’s likely that Van der Vaart will enjoy huge levels of investment for his double gameweek.

Thomas Sorensen
The Dane seems to have established himself ahead of Asmir Begovic in the Stoke goal- yesterday was his fourth start in a row. Sorensen’s 7 saves helped condemn Spurs to a first defeat since the end of August but with four of the next six away, many Fantasy managers may well look elsewhere. Two back-to back Britannia clashes against Villa and Wigan in gameweek 18-19 could be tempting, given his 4.3 price.

Ryan Shotton
Priced as a 4.0 defender, Shotton again patrolled the right flank of the Potters’ midfield and, with so many experienced defenders at his disposal, Tony Pulis definitely seems to prefer him further forward. Shotton’s eye for goal has seen him score 3 times in all competitions this term and he also possesses a throw-in similar to that of Rory Delap- always a good attribute in Pulis’ side. If he can establish himself as a first-team regular, Shotton could prove a dirt-cheap out of position alternative to help free up budgets elsewhere.

Matthew Etherington
The winger chose a showdown with his former club as the time to open his account for the season. Etherington has been mainly in the shadow of Jon Walters when it came to eyeing up Stoke midfield Fantasy prospects, with just 3 assists to his name prior to yesterday’s clash, but a 15 point haul propelled him back into consideration. At 6.4 and with just 2.7% ownership, he’s been off many a radar but Etherington has a proven Fantasy track record and typically tends to prove good value- with 59 points, he’s edged ahead of the likes of Samir Nasri in the midfield pecking order on the back of yesterday’s match-winning performance.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Considering upgrading Sess --> Valencia but it'd be for a hit. Is he likely to start? Or just bite the bullet and go with Nani in a couple of weeks?

Of course he will start the next game and probably the forseeable games to come, but most likely he will be the matrix/utility/hybrid position player that park was last season when others bounce back in form (see Young). I think SAF got a woody by the way Valencia played yesterday, getting himself in juicy crossing positions.

"matrix/utility/hybrid position player that park was last season"

Meaning, SAF will play him in about 3 to 4 different positions and shape responsibilities...meaning, don't expect him to be probing and bombing forward every game as he could be assigned to ball-hawk, stabilize width, hold and even straight-forward defend.

I agree I think Rooney prefers him as well; he can predict within the last 4 or 5 steps leading into the cross when he's going to send a ball into the box. Nani is unpredictable and is prone to selfish decisions when he should just play the simple ball.

I plan on trying to find a player like Valencia or a Yaya (a 5th midfielder) to rotate with my cheapie 3rd Striker (Yak) for when his fixtures are impossible to play him. So one week I would play a 3-5-2 and the next a 3-4-3.

Lads does anyone know where you can find stats on what teams' possession was in their last few games. I see Man City are evens to have 50% or more possession tonight wit SJ. If I remember correctly Chelsea midweek changed their tactics and had an awful bad possession rate around 30-40%.. Can see City dominate possession tonight but need stats to confirm this...

Well considering that this is the turning point for AVB vs "His Fatness", it's so hard to say. They're incapable of maintaining robust possession with him in there and some of the other line-ups they've tinkered with without him have been just as bad at keeping possession. I put it down to just impatience and length of probing passes attempted. Many times it's the way of football; if they see City with the ball valuing it and aren't seeing much of it then when they finally get it they will value it (if only to rest most of the times). But if City plays loose and direct as they have been known to do from time to time it will be a fairly open game, this is what I suspect will go down. This is really incompatible with the high-line that AVB fancies and will be a problem with Aguero who is quick enough to lull them 3 or 4 times coming back deep for the ball and then springing himself butt-bootyass wide open on a busted o/s trap. Which is why AVB is telling them to be more conservative with their positioning without the ball. They can pretty much do this tonight without worrying about an airthreat like a Ba or Ameobi.

    Dilemmas.

Defense too strong, want Ramsey & Raylor out with nothing in the bank. Did VDV to Nani last night, still have 1 free transfer and 0 in the bank. The only player I want for next week is Mata, but all I can see as an option is losing Silva... which isn't an option.

I can't do it on a 4pt, and don't want to take an 8pt hit. My eyes have gone square looking at it, fresh eyes would help.

Thanks Mac. Verm's a great differential in my mini leagues, can't see myself getting rid before wildcard. I agree though, tough choices on the downgrades, so I'm temped to wait. Richards, Jones, Verm is what I want, don't mind downgrading Raylor (4.7) and Enrique (5.4) to cheap rotators, still leaves me 1.1 short of fitting Mata in.

As you can tell, I'm pretty confused by it.

            Enrique > Mata.

There's also the niggle of Chelsea away to Spurs the week after, perhaps this should make me sit tight and keep 2 so I can get Mata straight after that game.

    C) Walters out for Nani - stupid transfer, sice Walters rocks for his value, and the problem VDV remains
    D) Mata or Silva out for Nani - they are too valuable, but I will still have TOT and MUN cover
    E) ?

Have been thinking also about that. But really like Sturidge, is a great value, only capable striker in CHE....

But will have, TOT and MUN cover. I like my attack RVP-BA-Sturidge....... cheap and effective.

    devastating demba ba news:
"Watford manager Ray Lewington offered trialist Demba Ba a one year deal at the club. After Lewington was sacked in 2005, Ba found that he was not in the first team plans of Aidy Boothroyd, and left the club in March 2005."

    Transfer in:
    Bale (SUN, CHE, nor)
    OR
    Yaya Toure (ARS, STO, wba)

Silva probably making way - yes yes I know, but if I dont get rid of him I have no cash to upgrade HBA, Saylor, Wilkinson. Obviously Yaya keeps City coverage and gives more £ manouverability, but Bale could go up again in the near future and I'd like him with the DGW on the horizon.

This isn't what you'll want to hear but I think that's such an unnecessary transfer. Wouldn't it be better to shift your bad cheapies to better cheapies instead? I mean I'm not the biggest fan on here of Silva as an FPL option but he's the most important player in the most free scoring team after all.

True, but I would look to get Silva back in January.
I have 0 in the bank, so would find it difficult to get the players I want to replace the cheapies. I want Samba and O'Hara for Saylor and HBA, and have to sacrifice somewhere.

All right. If you're set on that I'd rather get Bale than Yaya. I like Yaya but imagine how much it would suck if he was shifted back to a more defensive position again.

        _Adebayor_Rooney(c)_RVP

Ok,,first of all ,don't think theres value in O'Hara,,not playin off striker anymore so i would not consider him if i was you.
Id go Saylor > evans if he doesnt play just suffer on with brown
HBA > Cabaye , leaves you a geordie in the team and he always looks likely to chip in with something.
I wouldnt be afraid to sell silva if you have your heart set on it. Ive went without him for 2 periods of the season and have done really well with and without him so just spend wisely and you will be fine but NO O'Hara i tells ya.
