Suspensions

With the Christmas programme effectively now underway and games coming thick and fast, so too are the unwelcome cards and suspensions. All the more reason then to keep an eye on the Opta stats available in the members’ area and the new suspension tightrope at the bottom of the sidebar.

With said tightrope already showing the cards from today, you’ll find 2 names now missing from the list; Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye, who both picked up their fifth yellow cards of the season for fouls committed in games against Wolves and Swansea respectively; they will sit out the midweek fixtures of gameweek 17.

As if the trip to the Etihad for Tony Pulis’ men could get any more difficult, they’ll now have to take on league leaders Manchester City without their influential skipper, and the omens are not good as the last time Shawcross was missing in the league for Stoke, they were thrashed 5-0 at Bolton. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s resources will again be tested by Cabaye’s absence. Already without Guthrie (injured) and Gosling (suspended), Alan Pardew will be glad of Cheick Tiote’s return today to shore things up, but he’ll need to field his fourth different midfield pair in four games when West Brom are the visitors to St James’ Park on Wednesday.

As always on the Suspension Tightrope, there is a constant stream of new faces eager to backfill where others have left, and this week it’s the turn of Nigel Reo-Coker (Bolton), Danny Murphy (Fulham), Kyle Naughton (Norwich) and Paul Scharner (WBA) to take up their places, each earning their fourth yellow card of the season for ‘unsporting behaviour’ in the games today. Martin Jol especially will be sweating over the availability of his Fulham quartet over the Christmas period.

GAMEWEEK 17 BANS

  • David Wheater (Bolton) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 4 matches)
  • Jay Spearing (Liverpool) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Last of 3 matches)
  • Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle) – 5 Yellows (1 match)
  • Dan Gosling (Newcastle) – 1 Red for serious foul play (Second of 3 matches)

I don't beleive Holden is the answer, wasn't he in and out before his leg got smashed up? - as far as i remember he played about 7/8 in a row before the smash- but before that it was like every 2nd game no?

Is that why you captained Rooney. The ultimate smack in the chops if you pull it off. Still plenty of work to do my friend, anything big from Spurs would have you shifting uneasy in your armchair. ;).

It seems like something's going on behind the scene with Hatem Ben Arfa at Newcastle which may account for his not being selected. According to the Twitter feed of Mark Douglas of the Journal and Evening Chronicle:

"Lots of questions about HBA. AP was asked in his Monday paper press conference, so see Monday morning's Journal for Pardew on Ben Arfa. [...] Rumblings aplenty. HBA is a handful [...] He definitely does rate him. Is he working hard enough though? [...] I think HBA needs to get his head down - but that's an educated guess, not the official line."

Theres rumours going round at Stoke that Woodgate has a clause in his contract saying he must play a certain amount of Premiership games this season if he's fully fit.

Makes sense.... I can't see any other reason why TP would be trying to shoehorn him in at right back.

Will Shotton have an extended run in the team do you reckon? Or at least enough to justify £4m.

Nothings up with Pennant, he's just fallen out of favour with TP and there was rumours of a bust up. TP isn't exactly known for forgiving and forgetting (as Beattie will tell you). Whether or not he gets back into the first XI all depends on his attitude.

Its hard to say with Shotton. For the short term he looks ok but I wouldn't plan on bringing him in for the long term as TP is prone to dropping the youngsters as soon as they have a bad game.

You already have Vorm so you don't really need to spend that money on Friedel imo. Also you Evra to Baines is a poor move considering Utd's fixtures.

If I were you I would downgrade De Gea to a cheap keeper then use the funds to upgrade Dyer.

How did Baines play btw? I got the impression for the BBC report that he didn't take that many set pieces. May have to action that plan B of Baines > Verm for GW18

However, unlike Bale, Drenthe is slightly more likely to cross the ball with his head up and his eyes open.

Shotton went back to right back after Woodgate was subbed 16 mins in, so potentially could be losing the right wing factor.

Seems a good swap for Wilko though.

You say that, but in my opinion a fully fit Wilkinson will be preferred at right back if its between him and Shotton.

ok lost major ground in my ML today, but hoping VdV and Nani can claw it back. Wasn't planning on making any changes for this gw, but does anyone think I need to

    Vorm/Westwood

    BAE, Jones, Raylor, Brown, McAuley

    Tiote, Silva, Bale, VdV, Nani

    RvP, Ba, Yak.

    0.7 in bank 1 free

am actually contemplating RvP- Rooney for GW18, only other way I could do it would be to lose about 6 million from my midfield.

I got some inside news i heard ala Chelsea (though this was 2 months or so ago). Basically there is a massive rift between Lampard, Terry and Drogba towards Torres. Huge bone of contention that he earns more than them and is replacing one of this trinity (or was brought in to do so). They won't pass to him in training and bully him. Mental. Oh yeah, and Torres is depressed. Could be bull, but see some evidence of it out there.
