The Pre-Match Preamble - Gameweek 38 Preamble

This morning’s preamble finds us taking a different route. While we normally spend this time debating Rafael Van der Vaart’s hamstring, or the rotational whims of Roberto Mancini, this weekend we seem to have found some balance – an almost zen-like calm.

We’re pretty certain that Van der Vaart will start against Sunderland and, as for the City lineup, it seems cut and dry that we’ll see the big-hitters take the field against Arsenal on Sunday.

Instead then, we’ll grab the Saturday print press, and rinse through a few of the lesser concerns facing Fantasy managers this weekend.

Bendtner Forgiven?

The general opinion is that Nicklas Bendtner will return to the Sunderland attack, despite his alleged involvement in a car-wrecking spree that saw him arrested earlier this week. The Dane apparently came through a behind-closed-doors match in the week, having missed the Blackburn victory with a groin problem. Most of this morning’s papers have him in the Black Cats lineup at Spurs and we’ve now ousted Conor Wickham from our predicted lineup to make way for Bendtner’s likely return.

Check on Cheik

Nobody seems to know how Alan Pardew will set up his midfield for the visit of Swansea. With Dan Gosling suspended, Cheik Tiote’s fitness is the key. Recent reports found Pardew claiming that he was adjudged to be “30-70” for a return to contention for today’s game, but that’s been enough for many of Saturday’s press to put him in their Newcastle lineups. The likes of Mehdi Abeid, Alan Smith and Haris Vuckic are all being touted for starts in midfield – indeed The Sun opt for Abeid in their Magpies team, while The Guardian, The Independent and The Times, all feel that Tiote, if fit, will start. Those backing a Newcastle cleanie with Tim Krul, Danny Simpson or Ryan Taylor in their teams today, will certainly be hoping for positive news on the Tiote front.

Good Evans

Most of the morning’s press feel that we can expect a largely unchanged United lineup at QPR on Sunday. The back four is of particular interest of course. The majority of papers indicate that Jonny Evans will retain his start alongside Rio Ferdinand to offer strong value for Fantasy managers. Only The Guardian opt for Phil Jones within the back four, with most keeping the former Blackburn man in Alex Ferguson’s midfield. The press are split on a recall for Ashley Young – The Times and The Guardian bring him back with Nani on the opposite flank, but elsewhere the feeling is that “Differential” pick, Antonio Valencia, will keep his start.

Drenthe Doubts

Royston Drenthe is a player that earned some Fantasy investment ahead of Everton’s improved run of fixtures, only to fall foul of injury and miss the last three matches. Again, opinion is split on whether he will return this weekend. David Moyes is hoping that the Dutchman passes a fitness test and The Sun are amongst those who feel that Drenthe will start on the left against Norwich. The Times also go with that view, although The Guardian, The Independent and The Telegraph all opt for Bilyaletdinov in front of Leighton Baines on the left-wing with no place for Drenthe.

Call for Clint

It seems increasingly likely that Scout Pick Clint Dempsey will find himself pushed into the forward line for the visit of Bolton. A report this morning cast further doubt over Bobby Zamora’s fitness and, although Martin Jol has options in Andy Johnson, Bryan Ruiz and Mousa Dembele, it could well be Dempsey who is handed the centre-forward role, with two or more of that trio buzzing around him at the Cottage. The Times, The Independent and The Telegraph all opt to leave Zamora out of their predicted lineups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Darren Bent, once a fantasy stalwart now i wouldn’t pay 6M for him. Villa are negative and have no supply- missing Downing and Young so much. If N’Zogbia doesn’t come good they need to buy another winger or they could end up in a relegation battle

They have Albrighton and N'Zogbia, just need someone in CM to keep possession and launch attacks.
Bent & Agbonlahor are great but need to play uptop together or Agbon behind Bent. Bent looked so isolated vs. Utd, it was so obvious.

He may have the balls, but i definitely hope that his confidence is misplaced. I took a 4pt hit for vdv to nani, because if nani reached 10.2, i would not be able to afford him. Which reminds me why has nani not risen in price? He should rise anytime right?

My gw 16 3 to cheer

    Sturridge: Captain
Nani: Not owned by anyone else in the top 5 of my ML
Baines: Big differential for me. Bought 2 weeks ago and has returned 4 points, and if he does well will be captain midweek

My gw 16 3 to fear

Ba: Number 1 in my country has him as captain and popular captain choice
Rooney: Still heavily owned and I would has had him captain if I had him
Van der Vaart:Still worry about VDV after selling him for Nani last week. Always capable of double figures

    Lots of variety in captains in my mini league; in the top 13 places these are the captains;

    RVP x6
    Sturridge x2
    Rooney x2
    Ba x2 (Me)
    Mata x1

Suprised no one has Adebayor captain, but come on Ba!!!

      So, it is..

      Jags v BAE ... him
      Mata v Evra ... you
      Silva v Sinclair ... you
      Walters v Larsson ... you
      Ade (c) v Ade ... you
      Ba v Rooney (c) ... him

My guess.. If good luck are on your side, you could edge him.

For next week I'll have a front 7 of:

    Bale, Silva, Nani, Mata
    RVP, Ade, Ba

Yet I still feel it could be better. Will I regret no Roonpig or Aguero?

It's the identikit midfield/forward lineup. Aguero would obviously strengthen it but you can't have everyone.

Casual players who haven't shipped Aguero to get Ba/Mata/Nani over the last two weeks might benefit but generally the above looks good for the next couple of weeks.

just found out half of my mini-league team captained ade, i'm the only one who captained ba.

    the question:
    joes enrique or verm?
both are probably going to rise tonight, and i will not be able to afford it afterwards.

    thank you.

    so situation A:
get JE, verm and jones, caulker, simpson in my back line, but i won't be able to afford ade in dgw.

    situation B:
get jones, JE and BAE in my back line, and get ade to ba (provided that less than 0.1 prise rise)

    situation C:
get caulker, kelly, verm, jones and simpson, and get ade in dgw (will be screwed if price rise)

and of course, the ade to ba won't happen until gw19/price rise happening
    which looked the best?

Not everyone, but a lot of people for sure. Just goes to show sometimes excellent form with the right fixture means captaining a player in a mediocre team is fine.

I think penos sway peoples' thinking too. Sturridge and Mata are great bets for the fixture, but not on penos. We're still not sure what kind of quality united will have away, so its not for sure that they will light up QPR. A lot of people are nervous about the city/arsenal match which cancels out both assets. Spurs play sunderland who rank FIFTH in total goals aginst, making you think spurs may get 1 or 2, but certainly not more. That leaves Ba: great form, penos, attacking side that doesn't have the defense to count on anymore, and a good fixture against struggling road.

at least, that was my thought when I switched the armband from from Ade to Ba. This week is really close for captains: there's a good argument for about 9 people.

Kind of agree. Personally I think there were much better options available. Spurs at home to S'land, United against QPR & Chelsea against Wigan.

And, I just want to say, after our little chat yesterday, I have taken out RVP. I deserve some sort of medal for bravery and/or stupidity. 😛
