The Pre-Match Preamble - Gameweek 38 Preamble

This morning’s preamble finds us taking a different route. While we normally spend this time debating Rafael Van der Vaart’s hamstring, or the rotational whims of Roberto Mancini, this weekend we seem to have found some balance – an almost zen-like calm.

We’re pretty certain that Van der Vaart will start against Sunderland and, as for the City lineup, it seems cut and dry that we’ll see the big-hitters take the field against Arsenal on Sunday.

Instead then, we’ll grab the Saturday print press, and rinse through a few of the lesser concerns facing Fantasy managers this weekend.

Bendtner Forgiven?

The general opinion is that Nicklas Bendtner will return to the Sunderland attack, despite his alleged involvement in a car-wrecking spree that saw him arrested earlier this week. The Dane apparently came through a behind-closed-doors match in the week, having missed the Blackburn victory with a groin problem. Most of this morning’s papers have him in the Black Cats lineup at Spurs and we’ve now ousted Conor Wickham from our predicted lineup to make way for Bendtner’s likely return.

Check on Cheik

Nobody seems to know how Alan Pardew will set up his midfield for the visit of Swansea. With Dan Gosling suspended, Cheik Tiote’s fitness is the key. Recent reports found Pardew claiming that he was adjudged to be “30-70” for a return to contention for today’s game, but that’s been enough for many of Saturday’s press to put him in their Newcastle lineups. The likes of Mehdi Abeid, Alan Smith and Haris Vuckic are all being touted for starts in midfield – indeed The Sun opt for Abeid in their Magpies team, while The Guardian, The Independent and The Times, all feel that Tiote, if fit, will start. Those backing a Newcastle cleanie with Tim Krul, Danny Simpson or Ryan Taylor in their teams today, will certainly be hoping for positive news on the Tiote front.

Good Evans

Most of the morning’s press feel that we can expect a largely unchanged United lineup at QPR on Sunday. The back four is of particular interest of course. The majority of papers indicate that Jonny Evans will retain his start alongside Rio Ferdinand to offer strong value for Fantasy managers. Only The Guardian opt for Phil Jones within the back four, with most keeping the former Blackburn man in Alex Ferguson’s midfield. The press are split on a recall for Ashley Young – The Times and The Guardian bring him back with Nani on the opposite flank, but elsewhere the feeling is that “Differential” pick, Antonio Valencia, will keep his start.

Drenthe Doubts

Royston Drenthe is a player that earned some Fantasy investment ahead of Everton’s improved run of fixtures, only to fall foul of injury and miss the last three matches. Again, opinion is split on whether he will return this weekend. David Moyes is hoping that the Dutchman passes a fitness test and The Sun are amongst those who feel that Drenthe will start on the left against Norwich. The Times also go with that view, although The Guardian, The Independent and The Telegraph all opt for Bilyaletdinov in front of Leighton Baines on the left-wing with no place for Drenthe.

Call for Clint

It seems increasingly likely that Scout Pick Clint Dempsey will find himself pushed into the forward line for the visit of Bolton. A report this morning cast further doubt over Bobby Zamora’s fitness and, although Martin Jol has options in Andy Johnson, Bryan Ruiz and Mousa Dembele, it could well be Dempsey who is handed the centre-forward role, with two or more of that trio buzzing around him at the Cottage. The Times, The Independent and The Telegraph all opt to leave Zamora out of their predicted lineups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

He's supposed to be Turkish. Some say his father was German. Nobody ever believed he was real. Nobody ever knew him or saw anybody that ever worked directly for him. But to hear Kobayashi tell it, anybody could have worked for Mark. You never knew; that was his power. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
One story the guys told me, the story I believe, was from his days in Turkey. There was a gang of Hungarians that wanted their own mob. They realized that to be in power, you didn't need guns or money or even numbers. You just needed the will to do what the other guy wouldn't. After a while, they come into power and then they come after Mark. He was small-time then, just running dope, they say. They come to his home in the afternoon, looking for his business. They find his wife and kids in the house and decide to wait for Mark. He comes home to find his wife raped and children screaming. The Hungarians knew Mark was tough, not to be trifled with, so they let him know they meant business.
They tell him they want his territory, all his business. Mark looks over the faces of his family. Then he showed these men of will what will really was.
(Mark shoots two Hungarians, then shoots his children and his wife as the last Hungarian watches in surprised horror)
He tells him he would rather see his family dead than live another day after this. He lets the last Hungarian go, waits until his wife and kids are in the ground, and then he goes after the rest of the mob. He kills their kids. He kills their wives. He kills their parents and their parents' friends. He burns down the houses they live in, the stores they work in. He kills people that owe them money. And like that, he's gone. Underground. Nobody's ever seen him since. He becomes a myth, a spook story that criminals tell their kids at night. "Rat on your pop and Mark will get you." But no one ever really believes.
People say "I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him." Well, I believe in God -- and the only thing that scares me is Mark from FFS

Like I said, good at saving probably best in the PL. Useless when trying to deal with a cross in a crowded box. Check out the number of mistakes he's made in that situation. Good on them when there's no-one to challenge him or getting in his way. I reckon I could give Almunia a run for his money !

how does Ba get 20/1 he's at home to Swansea. I'm banking on my skipper this week, especially as my main rival has drafted in Studge for Agbonlahor and captained him. Would love it if AVB started Kalou instead, or, given his team if Terry gets sent off and Studge sacrificed.

Sometimes it's just best to keep them all.

There's no knowing which of the players will score well and who won't and if they're part of your plan until WC you keep them.

if u want consistent scores of 50-60+ points week in week out u need diversity in ur incomes:
        united: nani
        city: silva
        tot: ade bale
        ars: verms rvp
        chelsea: sturr
liverpool: enrique (suarez until last week)

so this way i have all the big 6 covered and im almost always guaranteed a decent return

Explain Enriques value if a Swansea defender, 1 to 1.5 million less, looks guaranteed 6 points every other game. He's not fit to wear a Reds jersey, barely better than Konchesky. Like your other choices though.

I've made risky moves this week. 2 utd defenders, 2 newcastle defenders. All my defensive eggs in two baskets. Hopefully captain Ba can pick me up some points though

wishere has higher work rate, a real box to box
ramsey's role for welsh national team was growing him into a clincal passer/deep lying playmaker role, not showing in arsenal these days since arteta is the master of this role

wilshere is the kind of player ever manager would want in his team. very similar to silva except he has a deeper role(wishere), keeps the ball really well and a master of short passes. rmasey on the other hand, is a better finisher and long passer of the ball.

not much b/w the two but i prefer jack more

Thought as much. For what it's worth, I'd still consider Ramsey the better prospect - he's much better on the ball and just as, if not more, energetic. I'll concede that there's not much in it these days though.

In fairness, Ramsey would probably be ahead if it wasn't for the leg break. He's a better passer and finisher. Wilshere just has a bit more about him at the moment. Both class, both at Arsenal 8)

So what are your plans for the DGW?

I currently have Howard, Adebayor and Bale. Will swap 2 of Mata, Silva, Nani for which Everton midfielder is on form and vDV. With money i save from downgrading to an Everton midfielder, i might get an Everton defender aswell. So 5 or 6 players for the DGW and then use the January wildcard straight after. I like it. 🙂
