[sbu_large_image] The Knee Jerk

And relax. Even before tomorrow night’s top of the bill clash at the Lane, this is no ordinary gameweek. Wednesday’s avalanche of goals and assists left us breathless at times, as United and City ruthlessly exposed opponents who simply looked out of their depth. And yet, as anticipated in yesterday’s preamble, there were cruel barbed surprises packaged amongst the night’s bounty of points.

The goals flowed, with popular Fantasy properties delivering – Nani, Sergio Aguero, Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Demba Ba – all players that boast huge ownerships throughout the Fantasy games, came good. Incredibly, the defenders also got in on the act: clean sheets for City, United, Liverpool and even Everton, brought profits at the back, on a night of handsome attacking hauls.

For some however, the clean sheets were soiled. The jaw injury sustained by Phil Jones will have robbed many of rewards from United’s win – a potential absence, with early reports already suggesting six weeks – will perhaps hit harder than the points lost. We await news from tomorrow’s x-rays, keeping the knees from jerking until we have confirmation.

The withdrawal of Micah Richards on 58 minutes was even more sickening. Feeling the effects of Dean Whitehead’s studs down his calf, the raiding right-back was preserved by Roberto Mancini, just two minutes from claiming his Fantasy owners a clean sheet from City’s oh-so comfortable win.

Twenty-four hours ago, we discussed such twists. The injustice will be hard to swallow right now, but those who felt the sting of tonight’s events, can be assured that these won’t be the last curveballs thrown. Off to the Lane.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

You are wrong. He covered RB when Jones got injured and Young came on. Then Young got injured so Valencia moved to RM. He will stay there now that Rafael is back. Rio will be back too to play CB so Smalling may remain at RB

I'd like to hear more about this, but for me its an alternative to Nani.

Are we using the 'e' word for Nani over the next few games? Valencia a viable alternative? Maybe both?

Nani will always be the superior FF player, it's like earlier in the season when people chose Nasri as an alternative to Silva, it will just end in tears again.

Don't really like him, but he is in that no-man's-land in terms of value - not quite budget not quite heavy hitter - so he will suit some teams.

For me not enough goal threat for the price, and not secure in the long term.

no changes for GW18 (barring injuries):

    Vorm,
    Evans, Enrique, Smailling
    Yaya, Nani, Mata, Drenthe
    RvP, Ba, Ade

to be honest, i missed the Jones boat before his price rocketed so i went with Plan B for Smalling and added Evans even later.

of course, if Jones is out for a while, it *should* gurantee a few more starts for my MUN defenders.

        can't complain about that.

You're right, if you can find good value in every team then great, but there often comes a time where a solid defense has a stretch of easy home games, and doubling up can prove very profitable. Even tripling up can be justified in extreme cases e.g. say Swansea had 2 home games in a DGW, you would only want defenders.

Aside from Verm/Enrique, I'd say that Richards, Evans and BAE are viable fantasy alternatives? Doubling up in my opinion is high risk, high reward but as other's have said, check out Tosey's team. Impressive mr.Bond...

I wouldn't do it for a big team like United because it restricts you to only one other United player for attacking coverage. It would be common in small defensive teams such as Swansea, Stoke and Newcastle however. Also the defenders in these teams are cheap lessening the risk

I am just illustrating a point with regard to doubling up on defense for a good attacking side. I am just saying that it can be restricting. The same would apply with Spurs, Chelsea, City etc

I was going to double up on Utd with Evans and Jones; with Evans being dirt cheap and Jones playing OOP and Utd's fixtures I saw value there. Now that Jones is injured I'm not so sure, might just go with Evans. There could possibly be value in Evans + Smalling but I'm not sure how likely they are to keep clean sheets right now.

Wouldn't double up on Spurs defence at the moment. They don't keep enough clean sheets generally as they are such an attacking side and for the DGW I think you need at least 2 Spurs attackers. I can sort of understand City but they've not been keeping many cleanies either. Last but by no means least you have Swansea. I'm very happy to be doubled up on the Swans with Vorm and Taylor, still offering great value.

I doubled up with evans and jones for the past 3 gws and have seen people triple up too. Doubling is absouletly acceptable and i am pretty sure there are lots of people who do that.

But at this junction, with united defence full of injuries and the tottenham defence always likely to concede, i had say there is clearly no need.

Man city, if you have the budget and feel your players can avoid rotation is the only team i would consider but then its way too expensive for my liking.

great results for everton this season, or allow me to say for moyes. they are getting wins out of absolutly nothing. if they had any other manager in the world they would be in the relegation zone.

not easy to keep internationals like jags heitinga baines fighting for nthn, when they know that if they move to a bigger team they will be nailes starters in their mational teams.

not easy to play with a collection of strikers like saha (13 games 1 goal 1 assist) vellios (bought for 250000 pounds) straqualusi (a nobody) mcaleny and cahill who is yet to score this seaon while he is constantly in double figures goals per season

fair play to a great coach.

I just have 1 person I can bench each week and have a stronger 11, because big hitters like Bale can fire against anyone.

I know I have a WC in 2 weeks. But the next 2 weeks could destroy my mini league for me.

Mini league Leader has 20pt lead with Jones/Nani/Rooney. Only Rvp/ba have kept me in the hunt. Not having Nani/Rooney made me lose my 30pt lead and now im chasing again.

Well that's just nice...another "Roshambo" gameweek...Since I adjusted my tactics from "head" to "gut" back to "head" I have decided that it must remain "gut" until the end of the season...means I have a 4pt knock lined up again...damn this cruel game...hahahaha!!!! Oh well...

Anyone else facing a slight crippling of their teams just weeks short of the next wildcard? And what you guys planning on doing about it?

I took a 4pt hit and did Raylor, Dyer and Suarez OUT for Evans, Nani and Sturridge IN...also to cover myself for price increases and potential drops...and now too have 0 in the bank...my gut suggested it (a week late again though) so I say if you feel it deep down inside...then DO it!

How about Adebayor, Ba and Silva-->Sturridge, Rooney and Walters for a -4 for GW 18 and 19.

I know Ba and Ade have the fixtures, but I fancy a huge haul from Rooney who Ill then captain against Wigan and good points for Sturridge too. Also, fancy Walters to outscore silva next 2 weeks considering fixtures.

Will get Ade back for Roon in DGW. Keeping VDV till then.

Hm, you're right. Still, the reluctancy to remove Adam and Walcott is what made it.

Yaya can get lost next week. I just think with Tottenham finding their feet again, Norwich might give them a run for their money.

Double gw is one thing, but ManU vs Wigan/Black burn is another.

Will get Bale back after there is more clarity about his fitness. Just worried about Ade's injury. One mistake I made was to hang on to Dvd when he was injured. Won't do that again with Bale/Ade if serious injuries.

Well it depends if i get Rooney or Nani. I won't get both. I will have a look at Bale/ade tonight, although I'm assuming Bale won't feature?

I sat to long with Dvd when he was injured and I can't make the same mistake with Bale. I'm selling Baines, so no need to get him back. ManU playing New(a) when Spurs have double so I will just swap Bale back in for Nani or Ade back in for Pigster.

        Easy.

Oh this game, this game. Pretty soon I can't sleep, can't eat, can't shit, can't celebrate christmas - just have to think about my fcking moves!

This man united defence / attack is really killing me right now. Was all set to take Smalling in 3 gw ago, but went safe with Jones - didn't "quite" work out. Plan was to save last weeks transfer and get two free this week - got greedy and did brown to evans before his price rise, so I'm now stuck with evans, jones and nani and can't get rooney in + have only one free tranny.

Another was to do ba to sturridge this week, but that must wait for a week now.
You think it would be wise to play safe and do just jones to smalling this week?

    My team
    Vorm / Hilario
    Jones, Enrigue, Evans, Simpson, Wilkinson
    Nani, Vdv, Silva, Bale, Dyer
    Rvp, Ade, Ba
    0,4 in the bank

    Current plan could be;
    gw18 jones to smalling
    gw19 ba to sturridge
    gw20 smalling to jagielka

I could also save that ba to sturridge in gw19 and make two transfers in gw20, could be smalling + dyer to jagielka + drenthe and bench ba for gw20.

Sorry for looooong post, hopefully someone has time and is willing to give some advice/view.

    ps. I could also do
    gw18 jones + ade to shotton + rooney (-4)
    gw19 -
    gw20 shotton/wilko + rooney to jags + ade..........

OK, lots here but here goes:

You have Evans so need to double up on Utd defs.

Everton defs are really pointless imo. Even with the DGW, one of those games is away to Spurs so I can't see hefty returns coming from them. Do Jones to Jags if you must but its not a move I'd recommend.

Nani or Rooney, but not both, are needed. You have Nani. Be happy with that as he will not let you down.

I still think 3 Spurs attackers is too much. I'd ship out Bale for Drenthe myself, but I suspect you want to keep all 3 for the DGW?

I'd look to get Sturridge or Mata in there asap as well and forget about Rooney.

        Thanks for your input Nomar!
Have to say I like that you gave me comfort to go without Rooney.

Jones must go this week, but maybe I choose that smalling boy, because I don't see cleanies for eve dgw either.
Next week should be then ba to sturridge (not worth a hit this week) and for gw20 I could do dyer to drenthe and keep all three bale, vdv, ade.
        Theres some major benching problems in that gw20 tough if I get;

        Nani, Vdv, Bale, Silva, Drenthe
        Rvp, Ade, Sturridge

        But hey, thanks again!

Yea, actually speaking of which, there is a fantasy site that works like that. You draft a list of players you want and they get auctioned off every week. If you win the auction no one else in your league can have that player for that week.

Haven't had a chance to try it but it's an interesting concept. Anyone remember the name?
