Kieran Gibbs is ruled out for another month after undergoing groin surgery. Phil Jones receives good news on his jaw injury, Davide Santon’s injury paves the way for Ryan Taylor’s return, while Steven Gerrard may be set for a surprise return against Blackburn this weekend…

Sir Alex Ferguson had some good and bad news for Man United fans in his Friday morning press conference. Ferguson confirmed that Ashley Young is due to miss several weeks with a knee injury sustained against Fulham but was pleased to reveal the injury to Phil Jones is not as bad as first expected. It was feared the former Blackburn man would be sidelined after a stray elbow from Clint Dempsey in the 5-0 win over the Cottagers had left him concussed, amid fears of a break, but Fergie revealed:

We have good news on Phil Jones: he should be okay for Monday. He has some swelling in his jaw but there’s no break, no fracture, which is good news.

Steven Gerrard could return from his lengthy spell on the sidelines against Blackburn on Boxing Day. Gerrard has been out for two months with an ankle injury but has now returned to full training and Kenny Dalglish has refused to rule out the idea that his skipper may feature against Steve Kean’s side. The Liverpool boss admitted:

Everything he’s done, he’s done very well. He’s been training, but whether that means he’s ready or not, we’ll have to wait and see.

Marcos Alonso faces up to six weeks on the sidelines with a foot problem. The left-back sustained the injury in Bolton’s midweek match at Blackburn and although there was no break, he will still need surgery to replace the pin that was put in his foot following a similar problem earlier in the year.

Davide Santon is set to miss out on Newcastle’s trip to Bolton with a knee injury. The Italian was subbed off at half-time in the 3-2 defeat to West Brom with pains in the joint but Alan Pardew has revealed he is expected to be available for the game against Liverpool on the 30th December. Pardew also confirmed Ryan Taylor will come straight back into the first XI as a result of Santon’s absence.

Harry Redknapp has revealed Spurs have selection issues in defence ahead of the trip to Norwich. Both Ledley King and Younes Kaboul have picked up hamstring problems and with Rafael Van der Vaart also subbed off last night after suffering yet another tweak, Tottenham could be forced to make a few changes for the Carrow Road encounter.

Kieran Gibbs is ruled out for another month after undergoing groin surgery. With Andre Santos unlikely to be back until March, Arsene Wenger could continue with Thomas Vermaelen at left-back, with plenty of cover in the central defensive area. The Gunners boss also revealed Johan Djourou has “a little chance“ of featuring in the game against Wolves on 27th December.

Wenger went on to admit he could be forced into a reassessing his left-back options, though any possible deal would likely be a loan:

It can only be a short-term solution for us because we have bought Santos, we have Gibbs, we have Vermaelen who can play there, so we do not need a long-term solution.

Owen Coyle has revealed that Chelsea have opened talks with Bolton over the potential transfer of Gary Cahill in the upcoming January window. With Alex now marginalized after his transfer request was accepted, the Blues are lacking in central defensive options and Cahill, priced at 5.2, could be a potential FPL bargain if the move transpires and he establishes himself as a fixture in Andre Villas-Boas’ starting XI.

Anyone else looking forward to the start of the Fantasy Cup in the next round? There's something addictive about trying to control one's destiny in something with so much luck involved...

I'm sure there have been some excellent cup runs around these parts before? Perhaps last 64 or better?

    Some tough decisions to date:

    Vorm,

    Baines, Jagielks, Simpson, Naylor, Shotton
    Silva, Bale, VDV, Drenthe, Eagles
    Kun, Adebayor, Ba

    GW 17 - 72 points
Season - 1001 (living in Dubai adds a nice touch).

    Any suggestions?

Just curious, but has anyone got a decent estimate as to how many players of FPL are 'active'? Out of 2.6m, what oercentage login/amend their team each week?

What is a good score for someone who visits this site regularly? 1,000+ pts by Xmas? Is it ok that I haven't got dressed yet today, and it's getting dark?

Top 100k for beginners i reckon is a good finish
I aimed for top 10 k last season

But its a lot of luck sometimes, I think by the end of the season there are a few hundred k still playing
Right now, I think 1000,000 active
      500k avid players

The auto minileague FPL entered me in (random sample of 18) shows more than half still doing transfers and stuff. None of them appear to make much sense, but there's at least a pulse.

Wish there was an auto-league that only included those who clearly know what they're doing. Perhaps those that login at least twice in every gameweek?

I login about 29 time per gameweek. Which is a bit sad.

Good question. The only way I can think of to get an indication is to tot up the total transfers made in the GW, and that should be reasonably close to the number of active players - probably slightly higher taking into account people taking hits, trying to get top GW score, playing a money game etc.

ok so after much 'uming and 'ahing I have decided on the following

    VdV ➡ Valencia

    Yak ➡ Sturridge

leaving me with at team for BD of

    Vorm

    Jones, BAE, Brown

    Silva, Bale, Valencia, Nani (c)

    Ba, RvP (vc) Sturridge

    Subs: Westwood Tiote, Raylor, McAuley

anyone think my transfers are bad, an problems with the team or sub order?

Got 2 FT transfers this week. Should I use one to transfer out Given, or keep him (play Vorm each GW) until the wildcard?

Baring in mind Swansea have some tough fixtures.

    Ruddy / Vorm
    Jones / N Taylor / Evans J / Simpson / Jose Enrique
    Mata / Bale / Silva / Allen / Walters
Adebayor / Van Persie / Ba
    (0.0 in Bank, 2 FT's)

Thinking of Silva (out) - Nani (in), any other suggestions?

Agreed but the other alternative is selling Mata who definitely has the better fixtures, plus I wouldn't lose any value on selling Silva.

    What would you do?

I have Ward (4.5) and De Laet (3.9) (Injured) and .6 in the bank. I want to bring in JEvans , so do I:

    A. Sell Ward and keep the .6 and have 1 sub.

    B. Sell De Laet, have no money in the bank and have 2 subs.

    Advice please........

Who would you bring in out of Clichy and BAE?

I’m not a fan of TOT defence, but with the DGW coming up + BAE’s place is more assured. On the other hand 5.6 for a City defender who plays most of the games is a steal…

City only have one more clean sheet than Tottenham (who still have a game in hand) and he's not a guaranteed starter. I'd go BAE
