Kieran Gibbs is ruled out for another month after undergoing groin surgery. Phil Jones receives good news on his jaw injury, Davide Santon’s injury paves the way for Ryan Taylor’s return, while Steven Gerrard may be set for a surprise return against Blackburn this weekend…

Sir Alex Ferguson had some good and bad news for Man United fans in his Friday morning press conference. Ferguson confirmed that Ashley Young is due to miss several weeks with a knee injury sustained against Fulham but was pleased to reveal the injury to Phil Jones is not as bad as first expected. It was feared the former Blackburn man would be sidelined after a stray elbow from Clint Dempsey in the 5-0 win over the Cottagers had left him concussed, amid fears of a break, but Fergie revealed:

We have good news on Phil Jones: he should be okay for Monday. He has some swelling in his jaw but there’s no break, no fracture, which is good news.

Steven Gerrard could return from his lengthy spell on the sidelines against Blackburn on Boxing Day. Gerrard has been out for two months with an ankle injury but has now returned to full training and Kenny Dalglish has refused to rule out the idea that his skipper may feature against Steve Kean’s side. The Liverpool boss admitted:

Everything he’s done, he’s done very well. He’s been training, but whether that means he’s ready or not, we’ll have to wait and see.

Marcos Alonso faces up to six weeks on the sidelines with a foot problem. The left-back sustained the injury in Bolton’s midweek match at Blackburn and although there was no break, he will still need surgery to replace the pin that was put in his foot following a similar problem earlier in the year.

Davide Santon is set to miss out on Newcastle’s trip to Bolton with a knee injury. The Italian was subbed off at half-time in the 3-2 defeat to West Brom with pains in the joint but Alan Pardew has revealed he is expected to be available for the game against Liverpool on the 30th December. Pardew also confirmed Ryan Taylor will come straight back into the first XI as a result of Santon’s absence.

Harry Redknapp has revealed Spurs have selection issues in defence ahead of the trip to Norwich. Both Ledley King and Younes Kaboul have picked up hamstring problems and with Rafael Van der Vaart also subbed off last night after suffering yet another tweak, Tottenham could be forced to make a few changes for the Carrow Road encounter.

Kieran Gibbs is ruled out for another month after undergoing groin surgery. With Andre Santos unlikely to be back until March, Arsene Wenger could continue with Thomas Vermaelen at left-back, with plenty of cover in the central defensive area. The Gunners boss also revealed Johan Djourou has “a little chance“ of featuring in the game against Wolves on 27th December.

Wenger went on to admit he could be forced into a reassessing his left-back options, though any possible deal would likely be a loan:

It can only be a short-term solution for us because we have bought Santos, we have Gibbs, we have Vermaelen who can play there, so we do not need a long-term solution.

Owen Coyle has revealed that Chelsea have opened talks with Bolton over the potential transfer of Gary Cahill in the upcoming January window. With Alex now marginalized after his transfer request was accepted, the Blues are lacking in central defensive options and Cahill, priced at 5.2, could be a potential FPL bargain if the move transpires and he establishes himself as a fixture in Andre Villas-Boas’ starting XI.

Afternoon lads. I'm going for a 14th consecutive green arrow so I need advice!!

    My team

    Vorm. Ruddy
    Komp. Enrique. Jones. Simp. Naylor
    Silva. Bale. Nani. Brunt. Moses

    Should I

Tough one to call. Starting Xl looks ideal. I have Sinclair, Walters & Nani too.

Nani has to play. Good home fixtures for Walters & Sinclair and Bale is doing the business. Larsson at home is a good option but you can't justify dropping any of your front 3.

Repost, got stuck on last page:

    Vorm / Ruddy

    Naylor / Jags / Barnett / Simpson / Enrique

    Walters / VDV / Nani / Silva / Dyer

    Ade / RVP / Ba

    1) GW18: Jags, Barnett, VDV, Ade -> Evans, Jones, Bale, Sturridge (8 point hit)
GW20: Jones, Ba, Walters -> BAE, Ade, Drenthe (4 point hit)

    2) GW18: Jags, Naylor, VDV, Ade -> Evans, BAE, Bale, Studge (8 point hit)
GW20: Ba, Dyer, Walters -> Ade, Drenthe, Sinclair (4 point hit)

    Which option?

I know the hits aren’t ideal but it’ll make my team so much better IMO. Cheers lads

Mata's price puts him in the same bracket as Nani, VDV and Silva, looking at the scores of these players (when VDV is fit) surely they are all better options? Silva is Mr consistent and the other 2 are captain material. Apart from a home game against Wolves Mata does not appear to be scoring as well as the others so why do people have him in their teams? Surely if you back Chelsea then Sturridge is the best cover?

mata points at home are much better than his points he collects away

the points away seem to skew his overall total. At home he is very good meaning he would be a very good shout for the coming 2 gw's. Although his form over last 3 or so game worries me.

            Ok I like that stat!

So it boils down to this.
            Would you rather have:

            a) BAE + Gomez (or someone cheaper)
            Or
            b) Shotton + Drenthe

      Good fixtures,
      DGW coming up,
      Shown he can get points,
If he plays 90 in one of the two games he could score big.

Know this is a repost from this morning but I wasn't really taking into account Afghan - UK time, (cheers for the comment this morning Daz)
    Vorm – Krul
    Simpson – Jones – Evans – Kompany – Shotton
    VDV – Pilkington – Gower – Silva – Walters
    RVP – Ade – Sturridge

1 FT – Looking to bring in Nani & Bale but would need to downgrade Jones to do so, wary of taking an 8 pt hit although both are likely to score big this GW. Planning on bringing in some EVE coverage for DGW (Osman or Drenthe) and possibly Surman for Gower for some lose change. Any thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

I dunno, silva to mata just does not seem like an ESSENTIAL transfer to make

both could get as many points as both are key to each team

Wilkinson out, Caulker in tonight since W will rise tonight, and C will fall? Tomorrow I will be 0.1 short.
Already have Vorm, so not too big fan of having two from the same team in defence. Any other options from 4.1 or less?
    My defence:
    Vorm-Ruddy
    Enrique - Jones - Simpson - McAuley - Wilkinson

to replace vdv for weeks 18+ 19

    a) kuyt
    b) osman/drenthe/cahill
    c) walcott
    d)walters

considering kuyt and cahill as statistically over the years score goals and havent scored yet this season so its a matter of time before they score. any logic behind this?

    thanks

    Vorm ( ruddy)

    Evans jagelka walker (Naylor mcauley)

    Nani mata bale walters silva

    Rvp sturridge (welbeck)

Think I need to start welbeck ... But for who bale?
And maybe Naylor in front of walker

Probably all irrelevant as Bound to some rested players

Norwich game seems to be the perfect game for Bale. Seriously thinking of doing a Silva > Bale for a hit. For the amount of goals that Man City are scoring Silva is getting a lot of points but should get more. He is the most consistent player but not explosive. Looking @ points per game thy are very close and Bale definitely gives better value for money spent.

My gut tells me that Bale will have a field day @ Norwich.

I used my free transfer on Yaks > Sturridge

it's down to how the opposition set themselves.

RVP for example is better away as away from home suits arsenal style of play. At home they struggle because teams play more defensive when they come to the emirates and it means arsenal have to break them down which they struggle to do. Away from arsenal can hit teams on the counter attack and the pace of walcott, gervinho in these instances is key and allows for more chances and more space and more goals.

Mata finds it hard away from home most likely down to the work he has to do. I believe at home his role is different as teams will most likely sit back and he won't have to do as much defensive work. Away from home the home team is more on the offensive so he has to do some tracking back and more gritty work which doesn't really allow him to be creative.

The feeling @ home is always more comfortable. Fans play a big role and its like having a 12th player on the pitch. Look at what is happening to Blackburn, I think they could have won against Bolton but their fans were awful booing and chanting against their team.
