Glossing over the narrow misses in last week’s Flutter, with a dash of regret at putting so many eggs into one “Ba-sket”, it’s time to darken Paddy Power’s door and scan the new markets, digesting them along with that boxing day bubble and squeak.

Whilst keeping £50 million worth of footballer in the dugout, Daniel Sturridge is fast becoming one of the most promising England prospects, closing in a Euro 2012 spot week by week. Sturridge looked sharp and hungry in-front of goal against Spurs on Thursday night and will be odds on to contribute in Chelsea’s early fixture with Fulham at the Bridge today. Sturridge to score and the Blues to win is 10/11, but the first portion of our tenner will go on Sturridge to net two or more goals at 100/30 for £3.

There are certain players who cause an audible buzz of excitement through the crowd when they gain possession. When Gareth Bale collects a pass in his long stride, with open space in front of him, when Michel Vorm steps up and looks a penalty taker square in the eyes, when Seb Larsson squares up a free-kick from outside the box. Sunderland’s Swede just missed out in the Scout Picks, cruelly omitted in the final cull, but at 12/1 to score from a dead-ball, we’ll take £2 on Larsson forcing humble pie down our necks.

Thomas Vermaelen’s purple patch of goals may have dried up against the likes of Man City and Aston Villa, but we fancy him to cause problems against visiting Wolves on Tuesday. Wolves haven’t kept a clean sheet since the third game of the season, whilst Arsenal have kept three in the last seven. Vermaelen to score and keep a cleanie at 10/1 may be a little hard to chew, but the Belgian has managed it twice and we’ll back him to do it again for £2.

Our final “Who Will Score the Most?” market usually pits three in-from strikers against one another; this time around we’ve added some midfield flavour. Just a few days ago, Rafael Van der Vaart looked unlikely to play any part at Norwich on Tuesday but now, it looks as though he’ll recover to play his part at Carrow Road. At 11/8, Van der Vaart is favourite to net over the much-fancied Nani at 6/4 against Wigan, while the last of our Scout Pick trio, Scott Sinclair, is offered up at 5/2 against floundering QPR. The irony of Van der Vaart coming good after being sold on by thousands of Fantasy managers isn’t lost on us; we’ll back him with our final £3 to cover the inevitable.

Paddy’s Money Back Specials

Paddy has gone “Money Back” mad over the Christmas fixtures. If any of the Premier League games from Boxing Day to New Years Day have five or more goals in them, Paddy will refund all losing first/last goalscorer, correct score and scorecast singles on the match.

If you’re new to this betting lark and new to Paddy Power then you can take up any of these odds and offers and get yourself a bonus. You can sign up via this site and get a free £20 when you register an account and bet a tenner.

Finally of course, we should state that all these offers are only available to those aged 18 and over and are subject to Paddy Power’s terms and conditions. Also, if you’re going to bet, always gamble responsibly.

    Hi guys !
Do you think RVP could be rest for this week ?
A.Wenger admited that he would rest his captain until the end of the B-day, but he doesn't say for which game...

    Thanks

RVP's chasing shearers record, arsenal are much better with him and arsenals game got pushed back a day so he has had more time to rest...so don't think he will be rested (unless he scores 3 in hsi next game and breaks the record)

I think Arsenal cant afford to rest him for a full game. Or they will lose.

Look this Intervuew of A.Wenger :

Arsene Wenger has warned he may end up being Scrooge – and stop Robin van Persie making Premier League history.

Arsenal captain van Persie needs three goals to break Alan Shearer’s record of 36 Premier League strikes in a calendar year.

But Gunners boss Wenger says he may have to rest the forward to stop him becoming burnt out – even though he has only two games to break the tally.

Wenger admits it would not make him very popular if he rests him against Wolves tomorrow or QPR on New Year’s Eve to spare him for the trip to Fulham on January 2.

‘‘It will be a big demand for him, but I don’t know yet, we will assess the situation after every game,’’ said the manager.

‘‘I don’t want to stop him. I am very happy if he does it, but hopefully he can combine the record with staying fit. You get his vibes, the medical vibes and you know the history with him. Then you make a decision.

‘‘I did it [rested him] in the Champions League because I thought we had enough security there and we could take a gamble. Also he was very tired after the Chelsea game.

‘‘What is important for me now is he stays fit. I know that if he is fit he will score goals. It’s as simple as that.’’

Van Persie, currently with 34 goals in 34 games, has drawn level with Thierry Henry and insists he is more concerned with helping the team than beating the record.

But Wenger suspects that the reality is a bit different, having been in charge when Henry and Ian Wright set their own different landmarks.

Wenger said: ‘‘But I have seen it with Ian Wright, he was aiming for the record and he didn’t score.

‘‘After he said, ‘no I am not bothered’, but you know with Ian Wright, the one thing he thought about day and night was scoring the next goal.

‘‘It was a little while for Thierry as well, so it is on their minds a little bit but they do not have to make an obsession of it, just play naturally.

“It is strange because you score goals when you don’t think about it.

‘‘I believe the great players know what is important. And what is important is that he is the leader of the team. He knows as well that what is important is to win the games.

‘‘What is important on the pitch is to make the right decision for every situation you face. He does that very well.’’

Van Persie has been Arsenal’s main man in 2011 but Wenger is equally convinced that the Dutch forward will get even stronger in 2012.

Wenger added: ‘‘That’s the target. In sport you always want to improve upon what you have done before.’’

He's right, you play most sports best when you dont think about it. However, id like to think he'd give him a chance to break it, would seem only fair.

I dare say you play the best when you don't think logically about, but instead think kinaesthetically and spatially. Different ways of thinking, in which the first one is much less connected to the actual performance.

A small (perhaps pedantic sounding) specification, mostly for my own amusement 🙂

RVP's got a 6 day rest.. why would arsene give him a rest? if he rests him this week he'll have a 10 day rest for qpr and just a 2 day rest for the tough Fulham(away) on the 2nd.. he will play tomorrow and miss qpr imo.. gives him a nice 6 day rest of the tough fulham game that way too

Looks good mate. Captain Wazza and take the oppurtunity to get rid of Ferguson if you've still got your transfer and the funds.

      Given, Shawcross, Sinclair, Fergie out.
Sorensen, Caulker, Gower, mid up to 7.3 (Larsson?) in.

Not sexy, but the cheapest options available to give you a fully playing bench going forward. Very solid for this GW, so no need to make any urgent changes.

Bit disappointed we didn't see more of a rush of IN's after his 1-point cameo the other week. Would have made you a bit of profit!

    Play Vorm or Szczęsny?
I have this goalkeeper pair since the start of the season, now I realize I should have chosen a cheaper one instead of Szczęsny, but I'm keeping until the wildcard.

Vorm has the bonus of points for saves, but Szczęsny has perhaps a better chance for a CS this GW.

I reckon you have to play Vorm whenever he's at home.
