Gareth Bale gives his Fantasy owners some belated festive cheer with a brace at Carrow Road. In a gameweek that promised so much but ultimately delivered little, Michel Vorm concedes a rare goal at home, while even armband favourite Robin Van Persie forgets to read the script and returns no more than a couple of points. Let’s get this over with…

Gareth Bale
The Welshman proved the difference in Spurs’ trip to Norwich last night, grabbing both goals in his side’s 2-0 win to at least put some sort of positive spin on this gameweek. Bale has now equalled his goals haul (7) from last term in just seventeen appearances and has already doubled the number of assists from 3 to 6. It’s near certain he’ll grab the maximum bonus too, taking him to 13; he was awarded 12 last time round. With every passing gameweek, he’s continued to rack up the points with ridiculous ease and has either scored or assisted in seven of his last eight appearances. Even at 8.9, he seems an absolute bargain but with the double gameweek on the horizon, his price seems set to rise for the foreseeable future.

Emmanuel Adebayor
Once again, the on-loan Man City player got amongst the points for Harry Redknapp’s side. Adebayor’s dancing feet in the home side’s box brilliantly set up Bale for the Spurs opener and his assist continues one of the most consistent runs of Fantasy form this season; the Togo international has now scored, assisted or returned bonus in twelve of his fifteen games this term. In spite of this, he’s still only owned by 18% of Fantasy managers, 6% less than Luis Suarez, but with West Brom, Everton, Wolves and Wigan all at the Lane in the next five gameweeks, plenty more suitors will be jumping aboard the bandwagon, particularly in light of the afore-mentioned double gameweek.

Rafael Van der Vaart
The news of his inclusion in the starting XI would have given his Fantasy owners plenty optimism but the Dutchman once again failed to deliver. While Bale and Adebayor continue to produce the goods, Van der Vaart has just a single assist to his name since the end of gameweek 10. Down to just 7% ownership, he could prove a decent differential in the upcoming double gameweek but priced at 9.7, there’s no doubt he’s struggling to justify his place in Fantasy teams, particularly with cheaper and more consistent options available in the Tottenham first-team.

Steven Fletcher
While many of us waited fruitlessly on the usual double-figure points haul from Robin Van Persie, it was the Wolves forward who stole the limelight by grabbing a crucial equaliser. Fletcher was fielded as a lone forward and his Emirates goal – his seventh of the campaign – again highlighted his tendency to produce the goods when least expected. The Scotsman has also netted against the likes of Liverpool, Newcastle and Man United but with Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool to come again in the next five, Wolves will be reliant on him to continue a run of form that has harvested 4 goals in his last 5 games.

Stephen Hunt
The Irishman seems to have stepped up his game of late. Hunt, having provided the ball for Fletcher’s goal, has now scored or assisted in each of his last three games. Given that he had previously failed to produce attacking points in back-to-back gameweeks prior to this run, it’s an indication of his displays and particularly pleasing for Mick McCarthy, given that Jamie O’Hara is currently sidelined with a hernia injury. With Bolton having lost eight of their nine games at home, a visit to the Reebok on New Year’s Eve will hold no fear for the Midlanders.

Yossi Benayoun
Arsene Wenger made four changes to the side that started against Aston Villa, with Benayoun replacing Aaron Ramsey in midfield. The Israeli – in his first start of the season- followed up his late winner at Villa Park with an early assist for Gervinho’s opener, lasting just over an hour before being replaced. With Gervinho’s departure to the African Cup of Nations just around the corner, Benayoun could continue to gather the game time as Wenger looks to rest and rotate over a hectic winter period. It’s perhaps a worry for Ramsey’s Fantasy owners, though; yesterday was the first time the Welshman didn’t make the starting XI, when available.

Wayne Routledge
Over the last few weeks, he seems to have made a strong case for a permanent role on the right wing for Swansea. Nathan Dyer has suffered through loss of form and injury of late, though a comparison of the pair’s stats is revealing. Dyer started the first thirteen games of the season and failed to pick up a single assist; Routledge, on the other hand, has provided 3 assists in his last five appearances, including the ball for Danny Graham’s opener against QPR yesterday evening.

Jamie Mackie
He’s been flying under the radar of late since recovering from a long-term absence due to a broken leg. While Heidar Helguson has hogged most of the headlines, Mackie has grabbed 2 goals and 2 assists, spread over four of his last seven games. Yesterday’s leveller saw him score in back-to-back matches and means he is only the second away player, aside from Javier Hernandez, to beat Michel Vorm at the Liberty Stadium.

ladies and gents. some nuggets of advice pls

    Krul (Vorm)
    Walker, Jones, Kompany, (Caulker, Simpson)
    Nani, Silva, Bale, Sinclair (Moses)
    Studge, RVP, Ade

can only think of two possible transfers:

    A) Silva > Mata - i like the look of Nani's fixtures
    B) Sinclair > Drenthe - keeps city coverage and sinclair aint doing much.

    thoughts?

My team at the moment is in dire straits. I have 5 doubts in my team for the next fixture. Welbeck (rotation), RVP(rest), Evans(injured), Wilkinson(bench), Pilkington(bench)

    Howard, Vorm
    Enrique, Simpson, McAuley, Evans, Wilkinson
    Mata, Nani, Silva, Sess, Pilkington
    RVP, Welbeck, Ba

I have -0.5 in the bank after provisionally doing my first transfer doing Welbeck to Ade.

Which one of these would you do for a hit

    a) Evans to Shotton (-4)
    b) Pilkington to Moses (-4)
    c) Evans to Senderos and Pilkington to Gomez (-8)
    d) Any other suggestions.

Can we do the dangerous and attempt to make sense of SAF's teamsheet this week? Long post, and probably confusing, but if you gamble on a decent hunch you can make big profits - having Valencia instead of Rooney really helped me this week.

    From FFS team news.
    Out: Ferdinand, Young
    Doubts: Jones, Smalling, Evans

    Predicted lineup:
    -----------------------De Gea-------------------
    -----Valencia Smalling Jones Evra-----
    -----Park Carrick Gibson Nani-----------
    -------------Rooney Hernandez-------------

There are several spanners in the works here:
    1) Will Berbatov at least get a look at playing after scoring a hattrick?
    Thoughts: don't rule out Berbatov.

    2) Valencia is placed at RB, all the media had him down at RB, yet watching MUN-WIG he was so far forward he was basically a RW. Someone was covering for him at RB so he could stay up. Consistently an option on the flank and more advanced than Evra in the 2nd half. Got a goal and an assist.
Thoughts: Valencia could be a good option again.

    3) The United center midfield was fluid (ok, "confusing"). Nani is placed at LW, but actually spent most of his time drifting around the centre (hence lack of crosses and assists from there). Gibson played as a lone DM most of the match picking up balls from CBs in an anchorman role.
Thoughts: With all the injuries Nani is not necessarily in his wing role so returns may be unpredictable.

    4) If Evans turns out fit (keep an open mind) he should go CB and a game of musical chairs will ensue. Based on current selections it'll be Smalling-Evans at CB, with Jones pushing Gibson out at CM. It could then be an orthodox winger's midfield of Nani-Jones-Carrick-Park, though I suspect Valencia will continue to be used as a RW.
Thoughts: if Evans is fit it should be United as usual with supply from the wings and Rooney playing as striker.

    5) If Evans DOESN'T turn out fit, it will have to be Jones-Smalling at CB as there are no proven alternatives. In that case, given SAF's past tactics, with Hernandez as the most advanced striker and Gibson a peripheral player, there's a dangerous chance Rooney will drop back into CM and relied upon to provide the creativity like against Fulham and in United's low-scoring spell. With a striker spot free, Gibson could well go out to allow Welbeck or Berbatov in.
Thoughts: if Evans isn't fit Rooney might play CM and it gets rather messy...

Nani could be in for a big score if he plays on the LW - he's been lethal last few GWs and rewarded (C) choices. He could also get a good score from the centre as he's versatile, but I think he's better on the wing. I would say if Evans is fit (and Jones starts midfield) we'll get the regular destructive United midfield and he'll be a good bet for (C). If that isn't the case, there's uncertainty.

Yeah I left out the Rafa factor! Rafa is basically another reason to get Valencia as he'll cover RB letting Valencia free to roam RW. But again Rafa can't play CB so Evans is all-important to the lineup of the team - if he is absent they will have to shuffle down to accommodate him.

Nope, Smalling is a natural CB, Rio should be fit, Jones at CB would not be great, but better than no Jones at all.

Rio is down as out on the FFS team news and haven't heard any stories about him recovering, that's why we have this problem. If he was fit there wouldn't be any of this uncertainty. Update me if there's been something new.

Yes Jones owners still have CS potential with him at CB, I'm talking more about the effects of absences on the shape of the rest of the team.

Basically if Evans is out, it'll be Jones and Smalling at CB and that means one less creative midfielder and increases the risk of Rooney becoming that one.

If Rio is in everything is okay because that frees up Jones.

Jones can play RB so yes that's possible. But Fergie seems to prefer deploying him either in the CM role because of his attacking qualities, or drop back to CB which some have said is his natural position. That's a possible lineup but not sure how long Fergie will persist with Gibson at CM.

Nice post. You're forgetting that Rio is back now (according to SAF press conference last week). Also Rafeal is back in full training and this could be a good time to get him back in.

Assuming Jones and Smalling are recovered from their illness I think the team will be:

      -----------De Gea------------
      Rafa Rio Smalls Evra
      Valencia Carrick Park Nani
      --------------------Wellbeck
      -------Roon--------------------

Trouble is trying to 2nd guess Fergie is you can easily be left with egg on the face

Team could just as easily be:

      -----------DG-----------------
      Valencia Smalls Jones Fryers
      Park Gibbo Carrick Nani
      --------Roon-------------------
      ---------------Chico-----------

      Thoughts: I havent got a clue 😕

lol that's a perfect example of the madness trying to 2nd guess Fergie - and they're both 4-4-1-1!

Well looks like if Rio's back that at least frees up Jones. I see you reckon he'll be dropped out of CM, just think he's so much in favour with Fergie that if available he'll start CM.

Rio back for me would solve a lot of my uncertainty, anyway.

for point 2 wigan play quite a unique 3-5-2/5-3-2 wing back formation lately which allowed valencia to push all the way forward and as their LWB david jones was so deep. v junior hoilett he would have far less of this luxury should he be rb again

Ah that's clicked into place now. Yep, I remember seeing Wigan playing 5 at the back against Chelsea. Ideally, when the team is under pressure it'll be 5 at the back parking the bus, but the team has to push up at other times to get 5 in midfield, press the opposition mids and stop them playing. They didn't push up against United, stayed too deep, remained 5 at the back and invited relentless pressure from midfield which resulted in a thrashing. And yep, the LWB was so deep Valencia could stay up.

Unless Valencia is placed RW this match it could be trickier.

If you can easily spare the cash then Walker. Reckon he's more of a goal threat and whereas it is unlikely he will score in DGW, he is more likely to than BAE.

If you're wildcarding in week 21 then Walker, if not BAE.

Nice one, 63 is a very decent score. 🙂

I'm pleased overall with my 18 to 45 to 50 even though I got a red arrow in the end - Bale saved my gameweek and kept me in the FPL Cup.

Is Bale a real must have? surely this form has to stop sometime and I'm not too sure if I want to Knee Jerk because I'm not sure who to take out
    this is my current team:

    Vorm Ruddy
    Kompany J.Enrique Walker Simpson Shotton
    Nani Silva Larsson Drenthe Ferguson
    RVP Sturridge Rooney
    2 FT 0.0 in bank

Yes I have a slight concern about Rooney and where he will be playing but apart from that is there any other major transfers that urgently need doing?
    feedback will be appreciated

He is quality, no doubts. Almost essential, and with a very high ownership, it will kill you if you dont have him

Great form, great fixtures and a DGW. Its all there

About Shotton. Are owners or managers who have him under the radar worried about Pennant replacing him following the 0-0 draw? They need to be adventurous and get those 3 points at home.

Also, with games coming in thick and fast, Pulis might have an excuse for benching him.

    Thoughts?

Shotton could then play RB instead of Woodgate in that case.

He also gives an excuse to not play Delap with his long throws.

I brought him in last week. Stokies seem to think he's played well and will be part of the 1st team for the forseeable (whether at RW or RB ). He's got the long throws and good fixtures too so is worth a punt at 4.0 IMO

    rest of team is...

    Howard (vorm)

    Jags - Jones - Kompany - Raylor - Brown

Silva - Bale - Mata - Ben Arfa - Allen

    Rooney - Ade - Ba

sound like good moves? annoyingly missed the rise on BAE last night but oh well

Welbeck, Ba, Pilkington to Sturridge, Reo Coker, Adebayor (-8)

Sturridge has greater fixtures than Ba so I think that is a worthwhile transfer
Welbeck to Ade is my main transfer and getting Reo-Coker is someone who gets 90 minutes whilst allowing me to do the other two transfers.

Thinking of doubling up with Nani & Valencia.

    > Valencia Nani Bale Walters Drenthe

    It would be:
    Evans > Walker
    Silva > Valencia

Mata is an alternative but that would mean no Walker/BAE

    Team at the moment:
    Vorm Krul
    Jones Enrique Evans Brown Simpson
