We see out 2011 with a programme of seven Premier League fixtures, after Gameweek 19 got under way last night with a 3-1 win for Liverpool over Newcastle. The Dugout Discussion opens for the final time this year, and the incoming team news from Old Trafford suggests that a certain Scot has begun his birthday celebrations a tad early…

Man Utd XI: De Gea, Rafael, Jones, Carrick, Evra, Nani, Valencia, Park, Welbeck, Hernandez, Berbatov.

Blackburn XI: Bunn, Lowe, Samba, Hanley, Pedersen, Henley, Nzonzi, Petrovic, Rochina, Formica, Yakubu.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who turns 70 today, names a peculiar looking side for the second game running. Given United’s 5-0 drubbing of Wigan last time out, who are we to question his selection? However, eyebrows will be raised at the exclusion of Wayne Rooney from the matchday squad, after only featuring for half an hour on Boxing Day.

Phil Jones returns from illness to partner Michael Carrick in defence rather than midfield. Nani and Antonio Valencia play in midfield behind a trio or strikers, leaving Ji Sung Park to man the middle of the park.

As for Steve Kean’s side, injuries to both Junior Hoilett and David Dunn (surprise, surprise), mean Radosav Petrovic and Ruben Rochina start. After his heroics at Anfield, Mark Bunn continues in goal.

After that we’ve five 3pm fixtures, and no evening game allows us to be unfashionably on time for our New Year’s shindigs. This is my last post of 2011, so I wish you all a Happy New Year! See you in 2012!

All those who bet on here, could you tell me a little about your experiences? Do you often win or do you lose money most times? what do you think the best things to bet on are? what are the worst habits to get into etc. I'm quite new to it and I got £55 back from the 2 or more yakubu bet before but I can see myself wasting again it on stupid bets.

Betting on live games kills me. I've only ever won one scorecast. I had 50p at 80/1, so won £40. I reckon I've lost twice that on scorecasts alone.

I have a good system atm, but it is getting serious. I have £64 on Burnley drawing today.

Take the £55 out as winnings. Leave a tenner in your account. Dont try and multiply it, you will fail at some point.

Not strictly true, they might prefer not to spend their money, in which case you have a fall in demand.

I don't think greed is intrinsically linked to either supply or demand though, it's a character trait.

I guess the only situation that applies to is when people are greedy to keep cash. That very rarely happens. Greed = consumption, imho, and over-consumption leads to inflation.

Nope. Look at the housing booms in the UK, especially the 80/90's one. People bought property simply to speculate and prices went through the roof (pun almost intended). The inevitable always happens though.

Yeah, but that doesn't come close to capturing what 'greed' is.

It's not as simple as saying greedy people do such and such, other than try to make money - but that is a basic economic assumption without which all economic theory falls apart.

But they try to make money so they can spend it. Maybe my definition of greed is too broad. When I was a stockbroker (a long time ago!) there was an expression that "Greed is good" which lead to market crash in '87.

Okay, I disagree, think that's too simplistic. People being out to make money is a basic economic assumption. Whether they spend or save etc. comes down to other factors like interest rates.

But I guess we've stumbled across what is essentially the problem - Greed is a pretty ambiguous term, so until you agree on a proper definition of what it means then it's a bit pointless trying to discuss it. Our stumbling block seems to be that it means different things to each of us.
