Continuing our series of Watchlist Wildcard articles, it’s time to turn our attentions to the engine room, to discuss the midfield targets who we feel have the potential to deliver on your investment over the next couple of months.

With Gareth Bale remaining a hugely popular target, in many cases there are just four spots up for grabs in our Fantasy squads. While United’s stuttering form and a demanding fixture list casts doubt over the wisdom of putting faith in the likes of Nani and Antonio Valencia, there is an abundance of targets across the price brackets that appear to have the form and fixtures to enjoy a step up to fill in the gaps around Tottenham’s Welsh flyer.

Clint Dempsey
We’ve earmarked Fulham’s raiding American as our top wildcard target amongst the midfielders. Fulham’s form, whilst inconsistent for much of this season, has shown signs of recovery of late – most notably in the 2-1 victory over Arsenal. Martin Jol appears to have settled on an attacking lineup, with Moussa Dembele and Bryan Ruiz providing plenty of creativity from midfield and wide areas. That will surely benefit Dempsey who, consistently presents the biggest goal threat within the Cottagers squad. With fixtures firmly in his favour over the next ten gameweeks, his 8.5 FPL price tag looks like money well spent.

David Silva
You might consider Silva as an obvious pick given that he’s currently the top-scoring midfielder in the FPL rankings. Even so, we’re seeing Silva’s name amongst the top ten transferred out statistics – indication perhaps that some have grown impatient with fairly modest returns that have seen just one double-figure score in 11 Gameweeks. Silva has suffered his first price drop of the season this week – indication again that some folk are choosing to shed the Spaniard. Looking forward, however, City’s fortunes look strong, with a fixture list that hands them just one serious test (Tottenham at home) in the next seven Gameweeks. The loss of Yaya Toure to the African Cup of Nations will come as a blow but will perhaps give Silva more responsibility to get forward and start fetching goals again, having scored just once in nine matches.

Stephane Sessegnon
His goal and assist return at Wigan this week will have brought him to the attention of many, not least several Premier League managers if the paper talk is to be believed. In Fantasy terms, Sessegnon has always had the potential to deliver. His performance statistics hinted at more goals and assists, but only once Martin O’Neill had instilled new belief has the Benin international begun to deliver. In truth, Sunderland’s fixtures are far from sparkling. They face some stern opponents over the next two months that will test the revitalising powers of O’Neill to the full. Sessegnon looks set to remain a key figure in the Black Cat’s ascendancy and, at 6.4 in the FPL, we’re seeing plenty of interest already – only Yakubu has seen more transfers in this week. With Swansea and Norwich next at the Stadium of Light, profit in the short-term, at least, looks likely.

Jon Walters
Another player who will need to fight against some tough fixtures, Walters is a mid-price “out of position” prospect who has consistently delivered at the Britannia. Deployed up alongside Peter Crouch, Walters has scored all five league goals in home matches, with just two assists to his name on his travels. This is a home banker if ever there was one. While the Potters face some testing away trips, home clashes with West Brom, Sunderland, Swansea and Norwich in the next seven Gameweeks would indicate that Walters has plenty of potential to go on offering profits from both open play and the penalty spot.

Yohan Cabaye
A superbly flighted free-kick against United brought Cabaye back to our attention as a midfield prospect in the mid-price bracket. In truth, the former Lille man has disappointed in terms of raw output. Just two goals and four assists is a modest return for a player who has featured in all but one of Newcastle’s matches and who has been a consistent performer throughout. Cabaye has perhaps been somewhat shackled by Alan Pardew, leaving it to Demba Ba to provide the goals as the Magpies climbed to heady heights. With the Senegal striker now departed for the African Cup of Nations, Cabaye may well be called upon to support the attack that little more. Hatem Ben Arfa looks set to come in to replace Ba – perhaps offering more fluidity between midfield and attack. The alternative view is that, with Cheik Tiote also absent, Cabaye could find himself anchored to a deep, defensive role in the engine room. If that transpires, his acquisition may be a gamble but, with QPR, Villa, Wolves and Sunderland next in line for visits to Tyneside, Newcastle could well remain prosperous, even without the talents of Tiote and Ba; their absence may just see Cabaye come to the fore.

Stiliyan Petrov
Much like Cabaye, the Villa skipper has earned the reputation as an all-round midfielder whose main duties involve protecting the back four. That’s changed rather markedly under the stewardship of Alex McLeish and, this season, we’ve seen the Bulgarian recapture some of the goalscoring form which made him so productive for Celtic in the Scottish top flight. The return of four goals is his best since he moved south of the border and, with Villa enjoying a kind passage over the next ten gameweeks, Petrov looks odds-on to boost his tally further. While Stephen Ireland and Charles N’Zogbia also offer options the Villa midfield, there could be a Fantasy renaissance in the offing; Petrov has been their most consistent force and looks the most likely to go on delivering into 2012.

Victor Moses
Having failed to live up to his pre-season billing, the knives were out for the Wigan winger by October. Shoots of progress in December, which saw Moses notch two goals and even earn bonus recognition, have reignited interest in a midfield prospect who can be acquired for just 4.8 in the FPL. At that price, it’s hard to find an asset who can rival his potential. We can talk all day about his performance statistics, his attempts on goal and blocked shots, the facts are however, that Moses, along with Hugo Rodallega, will hold the key to Wigan’s survival and, given his price, he remains a decent Fantasy prospect. In the same price bracket there is also the intriguing possibility of James McClean. The Sunderland winger has came to the fore of late under Martin O’Neill- he has started the Black Cats’ last two games and picked up bonus on each occasion, in addition to bagging a goal. One to consider for those Fantasy managers looking for a way into the Sunderland midfield and, at just 4.5, almost 2.0 cheaper than Stephan Sessegnon. It’s perhaps not a certainty he will remain in the first XI when O’Neill has a full squad to choose from but at that price, can be easily benched.

Joey Barton
The red card received against Norwich will take Barton out of action for the next two Gameweeks but Fantasy managers would be wise to keep the Rangers skipper on the radar. Barton will sit out the trip to former club Newcastle, in addition to the potentially profitable Loftus Road meeting with Wigan, but the kind run of fixtures continue to flow after that. Indeed, Neil Warnock’s side look to have the smoothest ride of any team up until Gameweek 30 and we’d expect to see a rise in profits from the Rangers squad, particularly if Warnock continues to add quality. Barton will surely be restored to the lineup once his ban is served and he will continue to offer the best value within a Rangers midfield – unless we suddenly see both Shaun Wright-Phillips or Adel Taarabt spark into life.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on my defence for next week I will have Krul in goal.

My options are Bae, Simpson, Kompany, Baines and Smalling.

Who misses out if I play 4 or 3 at the back.

    Cheers

Kompany, Simpson and Bae are the three I have at the moment. I am contemplating Smalling ahead of Simpson, with Simposin first sub, if only to avoid the doubling up, which given my good options seems unnecessary.

I brought Baines in for the DGW and he has Blackburn at home in GW22. Yes Everton are poor at the moment and he will go with my WC.

Ben Arfa, McLean, Sturridge (little more risk i guess)

I'm thinking that too, however, I got a sneaky feeling Ben Arfa will get more game time with Ba's absence, and McClean seems to be starting regulary under O'Neal.

I am also chasing 90 points in my league so looking for differentials.

Is it still a foolish risk to go with the first one?

Who would take, Cahill or BAE, I have Sturridge, but only until Ba gets back, and I have Bale. I had considered Dempsey but ruled him out as I had Verm. Spose it depends on who I want more of the 2.

Seems to have got lost on the previous page, another WC question (but different)

When would you play your wildcard based on the following:

    My current team:

    Vorm/Schwarzer
    Evans/Brown/Williamson/BAE/Kompany
    Walters/Bale/Nani/Silva/Jarvis
    Sturridge/Adebayor/RvP

    subs I’d probably make:

    Schwarzer -> Krul
BAE -> Cahill (if moves to Chelsea) else Senderos
Evans -> Senderos (if Cahill moves) otherwise Caulker or keep
    Nani -> Dempsey
    Jarvis -> Moses

that would leave me 3.7 for any suggestions?
I really like my forward line, and I’ve bought RvP at 11.9 and Adebayor at 8.0 so selling those two would almost have to be for the season.

Aguero is a stone-cold rotation risk though, and the week you need him you might be looking at balo's latest edge-up in his hair and hiding behind the couch hoping Mancini doesn't give him a 12 minute run-out...or vice versa. No matter hope much all of you talk up how better a player he is or what fixtures you think Ade won't perform on. None of you can change the team he's on. Ade will play 85-90 without fail, and will be sick when the tricks and braces start rollin in.

Anyone else think Richards has got a slight edge over Kompany? I've noticed a few things in recent matches...1) Richards has been coming up for some corners so i think he has just as equal chance of scoring as Kompany. 2) His darting runs up the wing for assists. 3) Good possibility of clean sheets at 6.3 rather than 6.6/6.7

I would prefer Kompany tbh, but sold him for J.Evans a few weeks ago (that went well), and he rocketed up in price, will be getting Richards most probably in gw24.

yes, I've been saying this for a while, people say he's a rotation risk, he's not, he gets more assists that Kompany as you say, Kompany has 2 goals to Micah's 1, and you're right Richards is a threat going forward, and he's marginally cheaper.

Yeah he is a bigger attacking threat than Kompany, but the worry is that Mancini will give Zabaleta the odd game, probably in an easy home match. You don't have that worry with Kompany which makes him worth the extra 0.3/0.4 imo.

I guess it could be a matter of preference also. The only advantage i can see for Komapny is the extra goal he has scored, As for rotation i disagree, as stated Richards has only been rotated back in GW7 and missed other games from injury recently. Richards seems like a power horse on the attack, like nothing can stop him almost. Bonus points are another thing. Unfortunately Kompany tends to get a higher amount, perhaps for more tackles since he is more central. So I think money is the main factor I'll stick with Richards...

Surprised so many are using their WC so early. Reasons I can see not to are:

    1) Hardly any transfers have been made so there could be some interesting moves later in the Jan transfer window that you might want to take advantage of.
    2) You get to see more of the people who have moved (i.e Donovan, Henry) and see how they've settled and if they're worth a punt.
    3) We have all loaded up on Spurs players and they have Wolves at home next game so would be worth keeping for another week before using your WC to ship some of them out.
    4) Things never go as you expect after all the teams have had a big (FA Cup) break to rest their best players.
    5) Many people on here have great teams already that barely need any changes but seem to be WCing just to stem the boredom of a 2 week break from the Prem games

I don't see how 2 is really relevant, I mean, how many players would you consider getting straight away on WC before they have been played a few games?
Whether you're WC'ing now or in 2 weeks, those players will be too risky to put in.

Disagree. For example if Donovan scored attacking points over the next 2GWs and is looking good then he would definitely be worthy of consideration. Also Cahill might come in to Chelsea and immediately get in the team and a couple of Cleanies later and I'd be interested

          A few points;
          1. You only have a few weeks to WC, I don't think that is enough to judge a player from scratch (Donovan) or whether a new arrival will be a certain start and actually make a difference to a team (Cahill) Even if Cahill was 100% nailed on, Chelsea have only kept 4 clean sheets this season..
          2. People wildcarding pick a team for the mid-long term, meaning they have no urgent transfers to make, meaning any new arrivals can be monitored before being transferred in anyway

I agree with a lot of what you say but wildcards are fun. Transfers are what makes the game good. Besides that this wildcard last the longest so allows you to add a few 0.2s to your spending power which can make a big difference.

You'll be lucky to get two 0.2 risers (Yak and Sess). so that will leave you with a grand total profit of 0.2. I've used my free to get in Sess so I'll have 0.1 profit and my WC intact. I used my 1st WC after an international break and it was a nightmare TBH.

Anyways it's up to the player when they use their WC of course, but I'm just surprised so many have used it already is all.

Ahh, I've already got a 0.2 rise out of Yak, and soon to be Walker and Sessegnon. The fact that deadline is still a while away means there are plenty of rises coming, especially a day or 2 before deadline. Its good to use WC early, so long as you have the next 6 or 7 games in mind when you do it.
FT come back week after and you can swap for any player who looks promising for a particalar game or run then.
There really is no difference using it early or late
If you dont already have Cahill, no worries, use your FT when (if) he signs for Chelsea if needed.

      Plus its fun

      which defender would you pick?

BAE is still in my side, but I have Bale

I have Sturridge, but he will depart for Ba so no Chelsea coverage

Then there is the Dawson factor at the same price.

Would currently suggest BAE because Cahill's gametime and Chelsea's defensive performance are both a little uncertain atm. Cahill could well work out though.

BAE for now and ditch him in GW24. I am playing WC then and losing a lot or most of my spurs crew

am losing all but Bale, if I wc in GW22 BAE will go, but I hope to hold out until GW24 when I can get Cahill.

Anyone have a better suggestion at 5.2

other wc defenders would be Brown, Richards, Williamson, Senderos

Even though I'm a Verm supporter, it has to be 2. I'm not a fan of Cabaye fantasy wise.

if I replaced Sess with a 5 million or less mid it could happen,

My other mids would be Dempsey, Nani, Bale and Moses, who do you suggest Jack?

fair enough. Advice noted. Any thoughts on a BAE alternative if Cahill isn't viable (have 5.2 to spend)

    Current WC team for GW23/24:

    Krul / Vorm
    Kompany / Enrique / Jones / Shotton / Simpson
    Silva / Bale / Dempsey / Dyer / Moses
    RVP / Sturridge / Aguero

Is Sturridge/Aguero/RVP a common front line in WC teams that have been posted? Which are the players I should consider switching?

Throw us an opinion on the following...

    Krul (Vorm)
Assou Ekotto, Williamson, Taylor (Shotton, G. Cahill)
    Dempsey, Gerrard, Silva, Bale (McClean)
    Van Persie, Yakubu, Aguero..

Defence too weak? I think it looks a fine sight stronger if the Cahill move to Chelsea goes ahead.
Any advice appreciated. (.2 in the bank. )

Would you still put him in if he stayed at Bolton? I like the team but yes the defense may let you down...do 3 defenders always rotate well?

Hmm. I dunno its quite a risk but I see a lot of goals in the second half of the season so I think I'll take the chance on investing going forward.

ive jumped into the wc ditching silva and rvp (risky!)
    my team now is
    lindegaard (vorm)
    bosingwa, kompany, jones. simpson, senderos.
    valencia, sessegnon, mata, bale, ramsey,
sturriage, aguero, and the big risk carroll

0 left in the bank any idea for possible alternatives carrolls the biggest question mark really i was thinking of punting on torres or bent too because surely they will hit scoring form soon?!

That last line could have been lifted from a post in October/November/December! They are all big (and expensive) risks imo.

true true which is why ive gone with carroll as liverpool dont have any other strikers really with suarez out, and the return of gerrard too could supply him a few goals i think

After more tinkering I have another development to run by you.

Schwarzer and Vorm is my favourite GK combo. However, I own Senderos and I think Lindegaard should remain in Utd's side until De Gea stops being a liablility (thought Linde played well at Newcastle). Despite this, the most important aspect is that by saving that precious .4 I can upgrade Moses to Sess or even Yak to Studge.

Is that a sacrifice worth making?
