Those of a certain age will remember those thunderous howitzers John Arne Riise used to unleash on unsuspecting opponents during his time with Liverpool. After a three-year stint in Serie A with Roma, the Norwegian has returned to the Premier League and is now a permanent fixture in the Fulham back-four.

He may have lost some of his thunder but Riise is still very much a solid prospect for Fantasy managers; having missed just two matches this season, his starts are assured. As one of Fulham’s free-kick takers he has also notched up four attempts on goal in the last four gameweeks, showing that the 31-year-old still offers plenty attacking threat.

The real factor in his allure, though, is in Fulham’s upcoming schedule. Putting it bluntly, it is delicious. In the next six game weeks Martin Jol’s side travel to Blackburn and QPR and play host to (NEW, WBA, STK). A trip to the Etihad to face Man City in gameweek 24 sticks out as the only bad egg in this fine platter of fixtures. Clearly, the potential is there for Riise to add to his six clean sheets and single assist, with the Norwegian also edging closer to notching his first Premier League goal of the season.

Investment in the Cottagers defence seems a smart move for the next two months and, as the joint top scoring Fulham defender (along with Brede Hangeland) on 58 points, Riise is sure to catch the eye. He’s also something of a bargain these days compared to the start of the season. Beginning the game at 6.0, he has dipped to 5.7, making him 0.3 cheaper than Hangeland.

Granted, he’s still more expensive than others in Jol’s back-four, most notably Philippe Senderos at 4.3 and Stephen Kelly at 3.9 but, given they have scored just 36pts and 23pts respectively, it appears you get what you pay for when it comes to Fulham’s back-line. Both Kelly and Senderos will earn new owners in January but Riise arguably has greater security and certainly offers stronger attacking potential.

anyone else looking at Ben Arfa rather than Cabaye now that Ameobi is injured?

Hmm, 5.7 for a fulham defender is kinda steep, don't think I'll be jumping aboard just yet.

Nice little article though, haven't thought about Riise since putting him in some of my first squad selections in GW1 so a good shout.

Still think my 'Burn the Bandwagon' articles have legs 🙂

Don't know about Newcastle in general - with Tiote gone they lose a lot of defensive solidity and Ba was the main man up front. I predict a slide until the boys come home.

    Vorm (Stockdale)
Simpson Senderos Cahill Evans Taylor (Swansea)
    Bale Silva Dempsey Walters Petrov
    RVP Aguero Yakubu

Team value is 104.2. Subsidized the midfield/front by the back. Idea is to play fixtures instead of form in the backline

Hopefully Santon will keep the LB slot, much better allround than Ryan Taylor. But yeah he isn't absolutely nailed on so Williamson is a better option at the moment and he offers some threat from set pieces.

im wildcarding and have ryan taylor, can sell for 4.6 only, is it worth keeping him at that price or getting rid for santon? only other newcastle player is barfa, so also a rotation risk. what you think?

If I was you I'd get rid of Ryan Taylor, he is likely to be first cover for a number of positions (RB, LB, RM, even maybe CM) so depending on injuries he could still start a lot of games but not first choice when all fit so very unpredictable how much he'll play.

As you're on WC, I'd get rid as too much of a risk for me but he could easily score a lot of points.

As for Ben Arfa, I think he's a good gamble especially for the next month. Only problem is that Pardew isn't his biggest fan so bad game could lead to him being dropped again.

according to Newcastle fans he's unlikely to be a risk any longer, with Raylor giving way. Simpson is an injury doubt and does sweet FA in terms of FPL attacking points (despite great stats). Williamson is fine as long as they don't buy another CB in the window.

Williamson is a pretty boring choice. santon is clearly a talented guy and if he plays like he played against United I can't see any reason why he would be dropped. He's a far better defender than Ryan Taylor and was given the nod against the league champions.

I like the article and see the attacking potential of riise of late. fulham seem to be geting it right at the moment and in recent games when kerim frei has come inside off the flank it has drawn the defender leaving lots of room for riise to bomb on. I would have to say riise is due a goal or assist sometime soon although i havent gone for riise myself and have gone for kelly as my cheap rotation defender. i think hes a starter at the mo as hes played the last 5 or 6 games and fits more into Jols attack minded plans. jol also said before the charlton game that he would play his strongest squad and kelly was a starter. i do like senderos as a player and he is a good option too as he is virtually guaranteed a place in the starting line up unless injury strikes. his distribution of the ball seems to be good which allows for turning defence into attack. the only criticism i would have of him is that his positioning at times is not great which can lead him to commit clumsy challenges and i feel he is a red card waiting to happen.

Seeing many unsure on who to get in for Ba I thought i'd look into it.
    Here's a quick guide.

Sturridge- Priced at £7.4m with a total of 84 points Sturridge is a cheap way into the Chelsea attack. the Chelsea forward has 9 goals and 3 assists in the 15 BPL games he has featured in. And with Drogba off to the African Cup of Nations Sturridge could find himself playing in a more central role rather than wide on the right giving him a further chance of FPL points he is the front runner as a Ba replacement.
    Next 5 fixtures- SUN(H),NOR(A),SWA(A),MU(H),EVE(A).

Odemwingie- With Chris Brunt out for 2 months it’s time for Odemwingie to step up to the plate and become as key a player for West Brom this season as he was the last. Priced at £7.2m with only 53 points. But with some favourable fixtures and set-piece duties to attend to Odemwingie is one to remember when selecting that final forward spot.
    Next 5 Fixtures-NOR(H),STO(A),FUL(A),SWA(H),WOL(A).

Agbonlahor- Gabby was looking a hot fantasy prospect after showing a good streak of form at the start of the season but has died down during the winter period with no goals in his last 7 BPL games. But being priced at £6.9m and with many looking for a differential Agbonlahor could be your man.
    Next 5 Fixtures-EVE(H),WOL(A),QPR(H),NEW(A),MC(H).

Yakubu- The Yak is a cheap replacement for the outgoing Ba priced at only £6.1m and with 12 goals to his name already this season he has shown form all the way through the season so far with big point hauls including 21 points at home to Swansea after 4 goals and 3 bps. Despite his form you must consider that the Blackburn midfield don’t provide the best service for the Yak.
    Next 5 Fixtures-FUL(H),EVE(A),NEW(H),ARS(A),QPR(H).

Henry- With Henry returning to the Emirates on a 2 month loan, he could find some form with decent service and still has his touch. But you must doubt his gametime and lack of fitness. He is a great differential and could help you pull back up to the top of your mini-league and priced at £7.5m he is a cheap prospect for some decent scores.
    Next 5 Fixtures-SWA(A),MU(H),BOL(A),BLA(H),SUN(A).

Helguson-The big QPR striker has shown a lot of promise this season with 7 goals and 3 assists including a brace against Stoke. A very cheap differential and with some good service could be one of the steals of the season.
    Next 5 fixtures- NEW(A),WIG(H),AV(A),WOL(H),BLA(A).

Thanks Parm, very good write up and very inersting, I currently have The Yak but Agbonlahor fell off my radar but I am going to consider him now, I only have two days left so I need to make my mind up fast.

no way. liverpool's defence is very average and at his price there's no way he's worth it. move sideways to lescott or richards

Johnson is pricey, better going for mid to low price defenders as there is bargains to be had and will allow you to upgrade midfield/forwards

i don't know what to wish for, my cup match is super tight (Bale (c), Walker, Fridel and Donovan) vs (Bale Ade(c) and Walker) - dead level on points!

Who would have thought at the beginning of the season that after 20 GWs, Bale is the highest scoring midfielder (I expect him to get at least 2 points).

Please help fix my wild card team. Any comments gratefully received!

    Vorm/Ruddy
    Simpson Enrique Shotton McCauley Senderos
    Nani Bale Silva Pilkington Sess
    RVP Aguero Sturidge

    Thinking of maybe:

    Ruddy to Paddy Kenny,
    McCauley to Shorey,
    Jumping on the Yakmobile,
    Nani v Valencia?

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

Which team would you pick for your WC?

    LINDERGAARD Vorm
    SHOTTON KELLY/SENDEROS WILLIAMSON DeLeat
    BALE SILVA DEMPSEY MATA Romeu
    AGUERO ADEBAYOR RVP

(weak team defensively but very strong going forward)

    or

    LINDERGAARD Vorm
    CLICHY KELLY/SENDEROS WILLIAMSON/SHOTTON
    BALE SILVA DEMPSEY MATA Romeu
    AGUERO HENRY RVP

(Clichy adds better defense, but a bit of a gamble on Henry)

    Any thoughts?

    Got a few problems:

    Vorm Ruddy
    bae Enrique EVANS SIMPSON HIBBERT
    Nani Bale SILVA DRENTHE FOX
    RvP Ade BA

Players in CAPS are injury / rotation doubts. I'll be using my one free replacing Ba, but thinking I might need to wildcard? Had planned to save it for GW24 to reduce my Spurs quota after WOL and WIG.

Would be useful to wait nearer the deadline to find out who is actually injured and who isn't.

Evans, Simpson, Hibbert, Drenthe, Silva may well start next gwk.

If they were all injured, then I'd be w/cing.
