The first Scoutcast of 2012 is here. There’s no dressing this up, the Episode title tells you exactly what to expect. With consecutive gameweek scores hovering around the two millionth rank mark and “ghost ship” squads passing me by, who can really blame me?

A string of unfortunate transfers and an errant injury to an Arsenal centre-back threatens to bring my season falling around my ears. Mark spends much of the podcast attempting to reassure me – convinced I’m at the point of no return, whilst simultaneously adding a few sly digs on the 71 points that’s opened up between us. I wouldn’t have expected anything less.

The season and the show must go on. In between gripes, we eventually throw in the usual array of regulars and, by the end, there’s even a sense of hope. Happy New Year? It couldn’t get any worse.

Feel my pain here.

Alternatively, stream away on the handy player below…

How likely is Bellamy is a starter? I can't decide between him and Odem..

id say rather likely. id rather have bellamy. after home to norwich, wba are away to stoke and away to fulham. not easy places to score goals.

Tip to everyone - get China Mag's rotation analysis as well. Mine only covers how to minimize the number of games played away. His is based on the fixture ticker and tells you how good the fixtures are.

Sent you an email China. 😉

Hut - do you mean this one by Isaki? It's not a link, I copied and pasted it into word......

I’ve used iamsuarez’s brilliant defence rotation checker (link at bottom) to find the best defensive rotation if you have 1 expensive defender and 4 rotating cheapies. To ensure CS actually happens, I’ve considered cheap sides with defences good enough to deliver a CS at home (NEW, SWA, SUN, FUL, STO) which leaves out the unreliable likes of WBA, WOL, QPR, WIG and so on. The best rotations were NEW-SUN (0 games away from home), NEW-SWA (1 game away from home), FUL-SWA and FUL-STO (both 2 games away from home). Since we need 4 defenders I then had to test which 2 pairs rotated best with each other. The final answer was that the best 2 pairs together are:
      NEW-SUN
      FUL-SWA
Your bargain options here include, in order of nailed-on-ness:
      NEW: Williamson (4.2) = Simpson (4.4), Santon (4.2)
      SUN: Brown (4.5) = Bardsley (4.8), Kilgallon (4.0)
      FUL: Senderos (4.3), Kelly (3.9)
      SWA: Caulker (4.0) = Naylor (4.4) = Rangel (4.4)
Here’s the breakdown of the fixtures for all 4 teams, divided into two periods: GW21-30 and GW30-38. Recommended fixtures are bracketed []. In the whole 18 GWs, there are only 2 GWs with less than 2 home games, and you will never have to play a team in the current top 5. The toughest team you’ll have to face is Liverpool, but you’ll be at home each time. You can play Blackburn 4 times, QPR 4 times, Wolves 4 times, Bolton 3 times and Villa 3 times.
      GW21-30
NEW: [QPR] ful……[bla]..[AVL]…tot…[WOL] [SUN] ars…[NOR] [wba]
FUL..: [bla] [NEW] [WBA] mci…[STO] [qpr]..[WOL] [avl] [SWA] mun
      SWA.: ARS..sun……CHE..[wba] [NOR] sto….[wig]…MCI…ful…..[EVE]
      SUN.: che..[SWA]..[NOR] sto…..ARS..[wba]..new…[LIV] [bla]….[QPR]
      GW31-38
      NEW: [LIV]…..swa…[BOL] che….[STO]..ARS…MCI [eve]
      FUL..: [NOR] [bol]….CHE…liv……[WIG] eve…[SUN] tot
SWA..: tot…..[NEW] [qpr] [BLA]..[bol]..[WOL] mun [LIV]
      SUN..: mci…..TOT….eve…[WOL] [avl]..[wig]…[ful] MUN
PS: Don’t forget if you get Evans you can have a cheapie who starts every match lowering the requirement to 1 defender from 3 of these teams – easy. You probably want to take out Swansea in that case.
PPS: Also, this rotation obviously applies to midfielders and strikers – particularly interesting in the case of NEW/SUN.

Gibson might not be the worst signing, Moyes has a good history with ex united players (Howard, Neville, Saha). It was only last season we gave up on Gibson, up until then it was thought he could still make it at United. There is no way Sir Alex would have let him come this far and play for the first team so many times if he didn't see something in him - personally I hated seeing him play as he takes the most ridiculous shots at goal, really fancies himself as someone who can score from anywhere. Nevertheless, I expect to see him do well at Everton if the move goes through.

I really wonder that as well, I wondered for a while whether they had agreed some kind of first option for United but perhaps it just means Moyes knows someone is going to buy Rodwell so he better prepare, not the worst swap imaginable tbh

Also, getting any united player for 500k is incredible. He's probably better than Obertan - more first team experience for a start.

Guardian reports that Silva has been resting in Spain and may miss Wigan...

      http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jan/12/carlos-tevez-milan-manchester-city

"David Silva is nursing a long-standing ankle injury and Mancini, mindful that his most creative player has looked as if he needs a rest, has approved a short break for the midfielder to recover in Spain. Silva missed the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final against Liverpool on Wednesday and may also be absent from Monday's game at Wigan Athletic. Mario Balotelli lasted 39 minutes against Liverpool but should be available."

I'm just saying that there are alternatives that do just fine.

I think one of the key mistakes by people this year is picking someone just because they're expensive. It lowers you into a false sense of security that they are certain to get you points. Okay, it may be the case most weeks for Silva but it isn't for others like Mata, Lampard, Torres...I think it's important to be aware of that's all...

I've wildcarded and sold him. No brainer, had to sell him or VDV to get Rooney back for Ade. Made sense to stick with VDV for one more week. I bought Silva late at 10.5 and got him out for a 0.1 loss so hoping he drops like a stone and VDV rises too lol! 🙂

A few left field choices I'm not seeing in many WCs who I am considering strongly when I wc next week:

Crouch - seems like a good differential to me. Nailed on to start and cheaper than Sturridge at £6.8m- some nice home fixtures to come.

    Huth - Similar reasons.

Foster - Great run of fixtures until GW 27 and signs of defensive improvement recently. Rotates v well with Fulham whose defenders I like: (NOR, NEW, WBA, SWA, STO, SUN, WOL, avl, SWA, NEW, NOR, BLA, CHE, QPR, WIG, AVL, SUN, ARS) until the end of the season.

Nicky Shorey - Similar to above, cheaper than Foster with a little bit of assist potential. Both nailed on but unfashionable picks.

    Current team is

    Krul
    BAE - Simpson - Baines - ( Brown - Wilkinson)
    Bale - Walters - Nani - (Osman - Drenthe)
    RvP - Sturridge - Ade

Thinking about Brown - Evans (1 CS poss in 2 gw)
or a punt on a mid
    Osman - HBA/Ramires/Milner/? (max price 7.1)

Nani hasn't done much for the last couple of weeks but is due a goal
Bale has been working hard and gets a few points.
Sturridge might be left out despite being declared fit. However the ANC has depleted chelsea of a lot of its players and he will probably play. Has a habit of scoring.
RVP is playing one of the meanest defences in the league. However he is RVP.
Yak, two words spring to mind. Flash and Pan. Also playing an increasingly solid defence.

I would say Bale C, Nani VC.

      Hard choice...
I would leave Walters out, and prob Sturridge

I'd go with what Jack says. I think Yak is a K-J after the MU game. Sturridge is fit. The only question is will he play and the ANC means probably.

        Walters out too.

    Morning guys,

Been really busy this week (first time for everything), so other than watching City v Liverpool I've not paid any attention to footballing matters!

Why is Silva doubtful? Surely because it's "only" Wigan (a), he'll be rested if there really is any doubt?

Bit worried because I already have Drenthe playing against Villa (a), a game he could easily be benched in AGAIN. Then I have Walters coming off the bench who's playing Liverpool (a), so it's looking a bit messy. Only have 0.3m in the bank, and would lose 0.4m on Silva if I got rid only to get back.

Not really sure what to do (already have Nani and Bale). My GK situation isn't looking good either, Cerny + Vorm to pick from so basically Vorm against Arsenal (h).

    thoughts?

Not even decided who to captain yet! Surely Swansea can't keep up their impressive record at home against the Van Man and Terry Henry???

Oh - and what's going on with Sturridge, is he likely to play? Could have major problems this week....

Silva has picked up an ankle knock and needs a rest - will probably only miss Wigan.

Surely Drenthe will start vs. Villa but god knows.

A lot of people are playing Vorm vs. Arsenal, only Krul of the popular picks has a good fixture this week.

RVP isn't a bad shout for captain.

Oh and Silva > Gerrard seems to be the vibe.

So I should probably keep hold of Silva, I'd want him in WC either way.

        Hopefully.

Vorm is god, could work out.

RVP or Adebayor I guess, but I'm annoyed at Emanuel after the double!

Not liking the sound of Gerrard......didn't work out too well last season.

The guy in 2nd who's not far behind me has wildcarded, bit worried I may get left behind! Maybe I'll take a risk this week and make no transfers and have 2 for next week!

There's quotes on the previous page re Silva, he's been in Spain seeing some specialist and is apparently flying back for the Wigan game, there's also some promising quotes, so he will be out for 1 game max IMO.
      Who knows with Drenthe really.
Sturridge is fit, and with Malouda being a doubt and no Drogba/Kalou he is almost certain to start.
Pondering RVP (c) myself also, but probably go Bale.

ive currently got dawson as my wildcard defender but fixtures not looking too good, i can rotate as i have richards skrtel clark and santon.

you think i should keep him or bring in G.cahill or defender near that price with good fixtures coming up.
