[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

Maybe it’s the blue blood, but I don’t recall ever having a strong first half to the season and I was well outside the top 100k in the FPL game at this point last year. I always manage it turn it round somehow; a lot of it is blind luck of course but as more and more casual players begin to lose interest and take up more sensible hobbies like going to the gym or talking to their girlfriends, it always seems that bit easier in the second half of the season.

With the tactic of jumping on bandwagons to build team value becoming less and less relevant, it’s time to focus on picking the players we like regardless of whether everyone else is buying them – call me a romantic but I believe it’s the “Differentials” of this world that keep this game interesting……

Steven Gerrard

It seems bizarre that we can be talking about Steven Gerrard in this article but with an ownership of just 1.9% and a marked absence from the numerous wildcard teams being thrown around, Liverpool’s DJ-hating midfielder is almost the definition of a “Differential” right now; very low ownership, a reasonable price and the potential to unleash a huge score on his unsuspecting opposition.

It was only three years ago that Steven Gerrard amassed 216 points in the FPL game; his 16 goals and 10 assists made him an essential pick and the massive number of transfers in during the season saw his price soar to an eye watering 12.5. A lack of form and fitness and a succession of injuries has seen Gerrard fall out of favour amongst the Fantasy masses in recent times, but now that he’s started to shows signs of his old form, his current price of just 10.5 looks like strong value.

After picking up a goal against Newcastle the day before New Years Eve, Gerrard continued his return to fitness by starting his first full game and scoring the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Man City on Wednesday. With Luis Suarez absent for another four league games, Gerrard will be expected to help out in attack wherever possible and we’re backing him to make a big impact over the coming weeks, starting against Stoke.

Darren Bent

Another strange choice for the “Differentials” considering his past form, but Darren Bent’s injuries problems this season has seen his ownership drop to a season low of just 4.0% and a price of 9.6. With an appealing fixture against an injury ravaged Everton side up next, we’re expecting the Villa striker to pick up where he left off last season, when he slotted past Tim Howard twice at Goodison.

Everton’s injury problems have become so bad in recent weeks that when Sylvain Distin limped off at White Hart Lane, he was replaced by Shane Duffy, a player that until Thursday morning wasn’t even listed on the FPL site. The Youngster actually did ok but with Phil Jagielka definitely out and Distin a major doubt, Alex Mcleish will surely abandon his defensive tactics at home and go on the attack against such a weakened Everton side. Barring a last minute injury, Darren Bent will be leading the line and represents Villa’s best chance of attacking points in what is historically a high scoring game between the two teams, so could be a nice option if funds can stretch that far.

Hatem Ben Arfa

The departure of Demba Ba to the African Cup of Nations is expected to provide a timely boost to Newcastle’s unsettled Frenchman, whose extraordinary solo goal against Blackburn threw him right back into the limelight last weekend.

Ben Arfa hasn’t started a league game since the last time he made the differentials in Gameweek 14, but now that he is seemingly fully fit once again, we’re confident that this time round, he can start to put a run of games together. Where he will be deployed is open to debate; his preferred position would probably be tucked in behind the striker but a place out wide is probably the most likely considering how well he played against Blackburn. Regardless of where Pardew chooses to play him, if he’s on the pitch then he’ll be involved and the potential is there for a bumper score if Newcastle can put together another big performance.

It’s always a lottery which way a side can go when a new manager takes over, but QPR boss Mark Hughes will have his work cut out and Newcastle look too strong right now. We’re backing a home win here then, and with an ownership of just 1.4% in the FPL game and a bargain price of just 5.4, Ben Arfa could be a key player and major differential for those who take the punt.

    💡 Wildcard worth using?
    ....for these:

    Vorm ➡ Given
    Senderos ➡ Kelly
    Moses ➡ McClean
    Adebayor ➡ Aguero

    Lindegaard (Given)
    BAE, Smalling, Enrique (Simpson, Kelly)
    Silva, Mata, Bale, Valencia (McClean)
    RVP, Aguero, Sturridge

I want to change Vorm and squeeze Aguero in.

I'm looking to use a free transfer this gameweek and use my wildcard probably next gameweek, and I have yet to use my FT. My team is http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1387/event-history/20/ and I have 0.5m in the bank and am thinking of Jagielka>Assou-Ekotto.

Are there any much wiser uses of this FT that I may be overlooking? I'm thinking the defence is my best bet as I'd only be able to field 2 players if Hibbert is out, and Assou-Ekotto looks a good bet and is set to rise in price too.

I dunno, to pick between, Nani, Rvp, Bale, Sturridge, Ade. Toughest choice of the year for me simply because they are all good picks each of them could easily score 10+ yet, Nani is off the boil, Studge just back from injury, Rvp away from home v swans, Bale is so inconsistent, Ade has been woeful but could come back to life. I just dont know!!!!!

There's no Kalou, Drogba or Anelka so unless Chelsea sign another striker he's going to get plenty of game time. Whether he'll get the goals or not is a different matter. I'd rather still have Sturridge but I don't see him as a bad option as he's assisted a couple of Chelsea goals in the last few games.

I've got 2 free transfers and .3 in the bank, but kinda feel like I should use my WC.

    Here is my team:

    Vorm, AH
    Simpson, jones, kompany, Evans, Enrique
    Silva, nani, bale, surman, dyer
    Sturridge, Rvp, ade

Want to get rid of AH, jones, kompany, surman, and dyer

Doesn't look WC worthy to me, especially with the fixtures this week. Kompany > Richards, Surman > someone interesting perhaps, or keep your other FT

Is Kelly at risk of losing his position to Baird? Thinking since I get 0.2 from the sale of Naylor I might as well pay the extra for Shotton.. really not sure!

    my iminent wildcard:
    from: sorensen,vorm; taylor, jones, bae, enrique, simpson; formica, donovan, walters, vdv, bale;
    sturridge, rvp, aguero

    to: sorensen,vorm; senderos, mccauley, bae, enrique, simpson; mcclean, gerrard, walters, vdv, bale;
    sturridge, rvp, aguero

seems a pretty good move to me. what do you experts think?

I'd rather have Williamson who's the same price as Santon - I see competition between Simpson, Raylor and Santon so it's hard to say which of them is the best option. I'd rather have Simpson out of the two full backs as he's started every EPL game this season and played all last season when available at RB.

What's the connection? The last four I sense are to do with Arsenal - is it just because they've let you down in the past? :p

I don't have any of those players at the moment but I wouldn't be doing half as well if I didn't have Rooney at the start of the season.

I currently have Sessegnon sat on my bench, but if I bring in McClean instead of him it allows me to buy Nani instead of Valencia. I may then sell Nani the following week to bring Sessegnon in.

        It's a tough call!

      Nani, perhaps.

"Although Antonio Valencia has outscored Nani in recent weeks, the stats show a different story. In the last 5 games where both players have started Nani has attempted 13 shots on goal and 15 passes that led to goalscoring opportunities. Valencia however managed just 4 shots on goal, as well as 9 key passes" from TotalFPL.

Hmm, I'm almost sold. What do you think of my idea above?

Worth losing my sub Sessegnon (for GW21) and replacing him with McClean to fund the move from Valencia to Nani?

        Nani's my captain this week.

He tends to do his major damage at home. And if Chin Music, above, thinks Wolves are bad then he ain't seen nothing yet compared to this Bolton defence, on the road and without Cahill.

It wasn't a comment relative to Bolton, merely a statement of Wolves' direness!

To play devil's advocate, haven't Bolton won their last two away games?

I am surprised that so many people have sold Silva (as highlighted on FISO), when reports say he should be fit for the Wigan match. I am hopeful that my midfield of Stevie G (c), Ben Arfa (vc), Dempsey and Silva will do me some good for this GW.

I agree. With City out of CL, FAC and now almost out of League Cup - they are almost certain to start Silva for all Premier League matches. Who else can unlock defenses like him in the Premier League? He's too good a player to sell for a team that is competing for the title.
