Peter Odemwingie made an instant impact in his first Premier League campaign, going on to notch 15 goals and 9 assists – an outstanding return for a player commanding a modest Fantasy price tag. We went into this season expecting more from Odemwingie under the stewardship of Roy Hodgson, but, up until December, the Nigerian has failed to live up to last term’s outstanding displays.

Odemwingie had looked a shadow of his former self, registering just a couple goals in the first 13 gameweeks amidst claims of injury and fatigue. After public criticism from Hodgson, however, the striker’s returns have shown definite improvement, with 2 goals and 3 assists between gameweeks 14-17 indicative of a step up in performance. Granted, the Baggies have failed to find the net in their last three outings but Odemwingie is undoubtedly back on the radar.

Odemwingie certainly needs to step up. Strike partner Shane Long has notched just once in his last seven appearances, having started his career at the Hawthorns in explosive style. Long is also currently nursing a back injury which could yet keep him out of the weekend clash with Norwich.

Although a more expensive Fantasy option than Long, there is good reason to believe that Odemwingie, with injuries now firmly behind him, has rediscovered his appetite. Despite missing a fair amount of action, his Fantasy contribution has already surpassed Long, with 4 goals and 3 assists compared with the Irishman’s 5 goals. Since the start of December, Odemwingie has outscored Long by 31 points to 18, an indication of their respective displays.

Chris Brunt’s absence with a fractured ankle is also significant to Odemwingie’s fortunes. While the Baggies will doubtless miss his creativity from midfield, Odemwingie seems set to be established as penalty taker during Brunt’s absence and he may even play a major role from direct free-kicks.

West Brom now appear to have favourable fixtures right up to the start of March. Having drawn a blank against a resilient Everton, home games against Norwich, Swansea and Sunderland afford Odemwingie the platform for a strong start to the New Year. It’s also worth noting that West Brom have scored 12 goals away from home this season, five more than at the Hawthorns.

With Demba Ba now departed for the African Cup of Nations with Senegal, his owners will be shopping for a mid-price replacement and Odemwingie, priced at 7.2, could well fit the bill. With Nigeria failing to qualify for the tournament, he will remain in England, sizing up Norwich this weekend, with our FPL January wildcards now in play. There’s no doubt Odemwingie has the pedigree to produce and, with a Fantasy ownership of just 3%, could well emerge as a hugely effective differential for those bold enough to take the punt.

Could Caulker be at risk of losing his place to Monk again?? Wondering if I should replace Naylor with Caulker in WC, but don't want a rotation risk! Thoughts appreciated, thx

Had a similar worry (in exactly the same position) but think Caulker will always start when fit now (couldn't play against Spurs as he was on loan). Looks a good prospect too I think.

    Currently have back line of:

Shotton being a doubt, would you replace him with Williamson/Santon? Either way I'm doubling on Stoke or Newcastle.

Drenthe out for Ben Arfa? Neither guaranteed a start I guess.

dont like Ben Arfa's minutes so far -but think the potential is there
      lost patience with Drenthe

Yes, thankyou Attila. Was perfectly timed. Had already discounted Cabaye thanks to your earlier info re his returns sans Tiote. Not convinced by him anyway in terms of FFS.
Seems that Drenthe and Ben Arfa are fairly similar prospects so it could be a sideways move. Having said that, though all logic should ensure that Drenthe does play, the Moyes factor needs to be considered - i.e. uber negative, doesn't want to start with him in away matches.
A combination of that and the fact (having just checked) that Drenthe is due to go down this evening leads me to welcoming Ben Arfa to my squad. Now lets hope that Pardew does the decent thing and leaves one of Ameobi/Best on the bench tomorrow.

I just had a mad thought - Danny Guthrie!
Now some of you may have read the Cabaye bits already, so ignore that if you like. This post is for those considering the Newcastle / 5under1and rotation for midfielders for their wildcard.
In truth it isnt a bad strategy and gives you a run of games of

QPR, SWA, NOR, AVL, ARS, WOL, SUN, LIV, NOR, QPR, LIV, swa, BOL, WOL, STO, BOL, ful, eve

To the end of the season. If we take three of the Newcastle midfield prospects - Cabaye, Ben Arfa and the pure punt of Guthrie and analyse the stats we can see that in particular Cabaye is less of a prospect without Tiote as handily enough we have a good comparison.

Tiote was absent from GW10-15 (inclusive). Cabaye scored 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 5 during those six gameweeks. From watching Newcastle throughout this season it was obvious that when Cabaye partnered Guthrie or Gosling he had to curb his attacking instincts and work as a deep lying playmaker, and thus he had less potential for FPL points. The stats support this picture, during GW10-15 he had an ICT score of 41.05 and had 3 attempts on goal, whereas for the last six gameweeks he had an ICT score of 48.97 and had 8 attempts on goal.

But how did Guthrie do when Tiote was away? He started in five of the games and scored 2, 1, 2, 1, 0 – hardly inspiring. However he did manage 5 shots (2 on target) equating to a shot every 86.6 mins compared to Cabaye’s shot every 157 mins. That’s pretty much the only good point though, his ICT score was far lower than Cabayes at 21.67. If you want a mad gamble he is worth considering, he is priced at 4.9 and has an ownership of 0.0% so is the uber differential! Watching Newcastle this season it is apparent that when Cabaye and Guthrie play together it appears that Cabaye looks after the defensive duties and Guthrie gets forward more. However Guthrie is only just back from injury, and although Pardew has said he might feature against QPR I would still be hesitant to put him straight in. He is also up against Vuckic and Abeid for a midfield berth (and less threateningly Alan Smith and Perch) so wouldn’t be as nailed on as Cabaye.

Ben Arfa is a complete punt. He is temptingly priced at 5.4 and is often deployed behind the target man making him attractive for FPL. The big problem with picking him though is that you can never be sure he will start. He appears to have both physical fitness and possibly an attitude problem that makes Pardew hesitant to play him every match. He is arguably the best technical player at Newcastle, but you might suffer Drenthe-esque frustrations if you select him.

Long story short for those who are about to do TLDR comments:
If you want safety of starts – Cabaye
If you want flair and potentially explosive returns – Ben Arfa
If you want uber-differential or you’re on a budget – Guthrie.

    Fin.

Hard to say, he might as he has done before. Though after Ben10's performance in the cup I think he will start.
In the case of your rival having Ben Arfa, maybe pick Cabaye then as a diff, he's not a bad prospect as if Raylor loses his place altogether then Cabaye should get freekicks etc.

Great post Attila, like the takeup of NEW/SUN midfield rotation, could make a lot "too expensive" teams work, provide competitive points and extremely good value.

Probably will go for Barfa given his potential and getting at least some points on the board already.

Like Jonty I'm currently considering a mid including Sess Larsson/Barfa.

last time on this I swear

ok those of you who have followed my attempts to create a top 6 teams attacking coverage wc side have basically ripped my Welbeck punt to shreds. So how does this look?

    Schwarzer/Sorensen

    Evans, Richards, BAE, Senderos, Santon

McLean, Bale, Valencia, Gerrard, Sess (or any other mid up to 7.1)

    Aguero, RvP, Sturridge

could get Nani, but it only leaves 5 million for a 4th/5th mid.

Dempsey is out of reach unfortunately, unless I lose Gerrard, but then to stick with my top 6 policy I'd have to get Adam, who for me has no value now Gerrard has nicked his set-pieces.

I could have both, but I'd have to lose Richards for a 4.7 or less defender.

Your specialist subject.... Keepers to rotate with Vorm for 4.5 mil or less

    1) Sorensen - fixtures a bit 'bah', also rotation screws up in a couple of weeks I think
    2) Mignolet - Sunderland on a revival but not got greatest of fixtures
    3) Stockdale - worried that Schwarzer will be back in two weeks... - is this likely?
    4) Kenny - OK, it's Paddy Kenny but fixtures are nice, rotates very well with Vorm and could get a boost with a new manager in there

At the moment my first choice would probably be Stockdale if I didn't see Schwarzer on the horizon, so given all of the above, is it really so crazy to go for Mr Kenny.... perhaps not (stop laughing at the back).

    Thoughts?

(Of course Hughes could go ahead and pick Cerny I spose but at least he could easily be transferred in...)

If money was not the concern, would you always have Dempsey over Sess at the moment? Looking at the fixtures seems like the better deal. Got Sess at the mo and have ridden the price rise but thinking of switching now

I do already have four other good midfielders (VDV, Valencia, Bale and Silva) but I'd like to have a beast of a midfield and it looks so nice on my screen with Dempsey in there as well

dempsey seems to be consistantly in the top few scoring midfielders every year which hes priced at 8.5. i think he made it into the dream team last year so yeah. as for sessegnon hes playing up front so youd always look for midfielders who play further forward. i had him at the start of the season but he did very litle so ahd to ship him out but hes in form at the moment. theres always other options tho if money wasnt an option

    1. Anyone know why Enrique was benched against City in the Carling Cup recently?
Was he just rested or has Kelly overtaken him for the 4th defender for Liverpool?
Or will we see Kelly and Enrique rotated in the future?

    2. Do you think R Tayor will find a place in the side for Newcastle?
Last time out, playing right midfield for Obertan.
Could Obertan play just behind Arfa up front with Best missing out?

*Trying to decide whether to hold Ryan Taylor for this week and see if he plays, esp if he could play regular minutes in midfield.

With suspension to Kompany, injuries to: Jagielka, Brown, Silva, Osman I may only have 1 defender playing and doubts with Sturridge and Taylor I am looking at 7 playing + the keeper at best.

Very reluctant to WC, I may have no choice.

Anyone want to take a stab at what ranking you need to be at the moment to have a crack at top position. Lets take top 30k to realistically make a challenge between now ans GW38, would you need to consider PODs already?

I have seen so many teams which tend to field similar configurations.

    Nani, bale, Walters, silva, Surman

Santon, kompany, j evans, Jose Enrique, Senderos
    Dempsey, bale, Walters, sessegnon, downing
    RVP, Aguero, Sturridge

Just feel like the team needs freshened up, to much money wrapped up in silva and nani. Lots of cheaper potential out there. Or maybe I should ride it out for a few GWs with current squad? Any help is appreciated.
