The morning stroll around the training complex finds us taking in the tittle-tattle from the press, soaking up the breaking news and digesting the predicted lineups to be found across the various “reliable” sources…

First up, and following breaking stories overnight, Chris Samba may now be considered a doubt to figure for Rovers against Fulham today.

The towering centre-back apparently cried off from Friday’s training session, with reports of a crisis meeting with Steve Kean scheduled. With huge speculation surrounding his future, Samba could now miss out in the crucial home clash with Martin Jol’s side? Kean would be forced to start with Gael Givet and Grant Hanley at centre-back and Samba’s absence would surely boost the potential of the visitor’s attacking potential – Bobby Zamora and Clint Dempsey in particular. All our sources start with Samba in their starting lineups and Kean surely needs his skipper to be on his teamsheet – we can only wonder what is unfolding behind the scenes though; we shouldn’t be shocked if Samba misses out and Fulham profit as a result.

A lot of the press immediately give debuts to Darron Gibson for Everton and Gylfi Sigurdsson for Swansea. Gibson’s arrival in particular, crowds the Everton midfield and appears to give Royston Drenthe an even bigger task to establish himself as as regular – particularly while Landon Donovan is at the club. We couldn’t find one source this morning that handed a start to Drenthe in their predicted lineups.

Sigurdsson meanwhile, is tipped for his debut in four of our sources this morning, forming a midfield partnership with Leon Britton with Joe Allen pushed up in support of Danny Graham. Not one source hands a start to Thierry Henry in the Arsenal lineup.

The Daily Mail is our most troubling source of team news this morning. They fail find a place for James McClean in their predicted lineup for Sunderland’s trip to Chelsea and, to be fair, they’re not alone. The Independent also starts with Craig Gardner and Seb Larsson on either flank for the Black Cats – presuming Martin O’Neill will look for that little extra security to counter Chelsea’s raiding full-backs.

The Mail are also one of several papers who have elected to omit Phil Jones from the United lineup. Jones emerged as a doubt yesterday and, with a tough schedule to come, the Mail clearly feel he’ll be preserved from today’s clash with Bolton; the Telegraph and the Times both agree. Jermain Defoe is in the Mail’s Tottenham lineup, with no start for Rafael Van der Vaart at home to Wolves – another alarming punt. No other source agrees with this theory, although The Times also start with Defoe up front, omitting Aaron Lennon, shifting Van der Vaart to the right-wing. That seems unlikely.

Finallly, it seems that Hatem Ben Arfa has split the press. We have a handful of sources who leave the Frenchman out of their lineups – including The Times, The Independent and the Sun. Ryan Taylor is backed for another start in two of those papers, with Gabriel Obertan getting the nod in the other. Clearly there’s some doubt as to whether Alan Pardew will give Ben Arfa a stage against QPR on Sunday, with plenty of press coverage on the Fantasy hopeful this week, raising our expectations.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Downgrade at least one. Its much more spread in the midfield between the expensive ones, and the budget ones that it is at the front. Yak, Ba, Sturrigde is much closer to your trio than Walters, Sess, Sinclair is to Nani, Silva, Bale etc.

I don't know if this sounds slightly mental but does anyone else do this?

Basically, I always try and avoid a 'contradictory' team. For example, today I could choose Vorm or Sorensen, I'm going for Sorensen mainly because I don't have any Liverpool players, whereas with Vorm I have RVP so I want him to score, which means effectively there is no way I can cash in with both Vorm & RVP this week, even though maybe Vorm is slightly more likely (maybe he isn't but you get my point) to get a cleanie

I spose the opposite view is do you hedge and say that if RVP doesn't score, to use my example, you have a great chance of getting some points back because Vorm might get the cleanie

I am so far from being an expert in this game, but my view is that you always have to give yourselves the best chance of getting a big score and to do that you need to avoid 'contradictions' like I've mentioned if at all possible (which it won't always be)

Does anyone else think this way (ie am I crazy)? What is the common tactic if any here? Are we alone or is there something else out there?

Well you always want to maximise your score. But if you think Liverpool have a better chance of scoring it doesn't sound like a wise move

I would pick Vorm in your case. I don't like having players up against each other but I always pick the one with the most chance of getting points (ie cs).

      I sometimes purposly contradict.

If you pick Vorm, then you get points if RVP scores or if he doesnt.

Thanks to everyone who replied, it's something I've (over)-thought about a lot and I'm not sure what the 'pros' would do in this situation which is why I asked, maybe Vorm is the way forward after all... Cheers

I reckon there's something else out there but i get an inkling that's probably not your main question 🙂

I don't avoid contradictions personally - i merely rely on the hope that i havent got any.

I have both Vorm & RVP and are playing both. If i get a cleanie or a RVP goal i'll be happy - i don't need (and probably won't get) returns from both this week - but long term i will (hopefully!).

      Hope that helps fella.

      PS. You're not crazy. Probably.

Tweet from VDV (30 mins ago)

    rafvdvaart Rafael van der Vaart
Match day! Looking forward to todays game #SpursWolves. Important one for the league!!

I just can't see him not started and I'm having a major punt on him with the armband.

I am a Spurs fan and reckon he will start, but would expect a relatively early withdrawal, if Spurs get a bit of a cushion. HUGE game next week.

Yeah, I wouldn't disagree with that. Let's hope he notches before then! I'm wildcarding in a couple weeks so want to have a few punts over the next couple gw's, have some fun. I know it'll all end in tears as I can't remember the last time (C) someone on a saturday and it paid off

I actually agree, it's totally illogical but Sat capts don't seem to have paid off this season very often

Spent too many sat afternoons wishing I'd gone for the sunday player. Too be honest I think RVP is prob the better choice, but I'm playing vorm and VDV is gonna be out my team in a couple weeks so just gonna see what happens. Always the chance of a pen or set piece involvement.

Flipped a coin 11 times and it came Ade 7 Nani 4.
I was leaning towards Ade and I have made up my mind on who to captain.
    Adebayor =13x2=26 points!

I would start Kelly. I think Fulham will get a clean sheet.
Bench Walters, he hardly does anything away from home and will probably be tracking back the Liverpool fullbacks Enrique or Johnson

          Not that it matters!
I don't know about penalties with Howard Webb on loan from United. Here is a stat for you 'Stoke have failed to score in their three Premier League visits to Anfield and have scored just once in their last 10 away games against Liverpool in all competitions'

I'd go for more balanced keepers, hart seems a waste for a city spot, plus bogden wil never play. Also McClean instead of Moses. Apart from that looks v.decent.

cheers.... McClean comes in for moses soon.. just waiting on a price rise for moses so I can earn out of him...

Playing Hart every week so Bogdan is irrelevant

I guess I meant I'm going for richards, silva, aguero and there's got to be more points there than if I'd have given one of those spaces to Hart.

Bale or Aguero out of those for this week. I have Bale but going VDV ahead of him. To be honest if I had him I think I'd def choose aguero as it's lovely waiting for you (C) to play in the last match. You always have hope 🙂
