A New Year, an old favourite. With the fixture list now settled into a regular routine, it’s high time we gave it a thorough frisk to assess the “strength of schedule” as the title race and relegation scrap warm up…

The Strong

QPR

A narrow defeat at Newcastle gave Mark Hughes some positives and, with a slew of transfers already mooted, it’s clear that Rangers are set to undergo a mini transformation in the coming weeks.

Intriguingly, QPR also have a run of fixtures that appear to offer them the opportunity to climb out of the relegation places, if Hughes can instill new confidence to accompany the new faces. Home games with Wigan, Wolves, Fulham and Everton in the next six Gameweeks look key; trips to Villa, Blackburn and Bolton could also provide league points and Fantasy profit.

Joey Barton and Heidar Helguson look to be the most popular Fantasy targets right now, with Anton Ferdinand and Danny Gabbidon drawing interest in the defence. With new acquisitions looking inevitable, however, it seems wise to sit back and assess Hughes’ squad as a moveable feast, paying visit again at the end of the month.

Wolves

Mick McCarthy’s Wolves have so far been unable to string a run of results together to establish a mid-table foothold, with four draws in their last five. The well-deserved point at White Hart Lane on Saturday did, however, hint at a revival in fortunes, with McCarthy adamant that his side have not yet earned the results their performances have merited.

Steven Fletcher is undoubtedly a key transfer target for Fantasy managers following strong goalscoring form. His stock will surely continue to rise ahead of a run of opponents that appear to provide a platform for continued returns. Wolves have scored at least once in each of their last eight league matches – Fletcher has scored six times in the process.

Three home matches in four bring Villa, Liverpool and West Brom to Molineux and, although two of those games are potentially fiery local derbies, Fletcher’s potential remains strong. Aside from McCarthy’s centre-forward, Jamie O’Hara could come back on the radar with his injury now cleared, while Roger Johnson and Wayne Hennessey offer budget options in defence.

Fulham

Martin Jol’s side continue to frustrate as they struggle to maintain any kind of consistency which would clear the way for confident Fantasy investment. It’s a shame – the talent is clearly present, with differentials such as Bryan Ruiz, Moussa Dembele and Danny Murphy all recording outstanding performance statistics but failing to translate these into Fantasy returns.

Clint Dempsey is the exception and, with strong fixtures to come, right up until Gameweek 29, the American looks set to fetch continued investment.

Home matches with Newcastle, West Brom, Stoke and Wolves appear to give the Cottagers the opportunity to establish a run of form – if they can exploit it, then Dempsey, along with the likes of John Arne Riise, Brede Hangeland, Bobby Zamora and budget options like Stephen Kelly and Phillipe Senderos, could emerge as strong mid-season options.

Sunderland

Martin O’Neill’s side squandered chance after chance at Stamford Bridge, a game that really should maintained the Black Cat’s revival under their new boss. O’Neill can at least take some comfort from a fixture list, which, in the short-term, hands them ample opportunity to climb further up the table.

Three home games in four has them face newly promoted Swansea and Norwich, while Arsenal will provide the opposition at the Stadium of Light in Gameweek 25. Arsene Wenger surely won’t be relishing the prospect of the Wearside trip, as O’Neil continues to build Sunderland into a side that threatens a top eight finish.

Stephane Sessegnon has now emerged from the shadow of Seb Larsson as the key Fantasy target, while James McClean has also arrived on the scene as a serious budget consideration in midfield. One of those two look wise acquisitions for the next few weeks.

Stoke

Tony Pulis’ side battled to a point at Anfield, drawing a change of tactics from Kenny Dalglish – indication at the respect they demand from opponents. While that away point will have been welcomed, it’s the matches at the Britannia that remain the key to Stoke’s league fortunes and the potential of their Fantasy talent. With four home games in the next six, Stoke are about to embark on a run that will surely tempt investment from Fantasy managers.

Jon Walters remains the key attacking talent – his goalscoring form is reserved almost exclusively for home matches and, as a mid-price midfield option, he will surely continue to prove popular in the coming weeks. Elsewhere, Robert Huth is long overdue attacking returns to accompany any clean sheets, whilst behind him, Thomas Sorensen remains a strong budget option in goal. There are differentials all over the Stoke team-sheet, with Ryan Shotton and Peter Crouch offering further alternatives for those looking to take a punt.

Also consider…

Man City – While the other two title contenders face a stiff run through until March (see below), City have an comparatively easy through February, which promises to establish the likes of Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero in our squads.

Aston Villa – like Fulham, Villa are a side blessed with Fantasy talent but with an inconsistent streak that has rendered them an unreliable source of returns. The coming weeks have them face Newcastle and City as their sternest tests in eight Gameweeks. Darrren Bent and perhaps Stephen Ireland, could emerge as worthy considerations if Alex McLeish’s side can exploit their other six fixtures.

The Weak

Man United

While City can bask in the comfort of some reassuring fixtures in February, United face their most challenging spell of the season with games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs all to come in the next six. Having lost two of their last three in the league, United start at the Emirates with their title challenge in the balance. Suffer a couple of damaging defeats during this six game spell, and City may well establish an unassailable lead.

In Fantasy terms, confidence has also been dented. Nani has drawn blanks in four consecutive Gameweeks, Wayne Rooney has returned just Saturday’s rather dubious assists in the same spell. Overall, United’s attacking assets have stumbled and, with fixtures against them, it seems unlikely that we’ll see investment pick up. On the flipside, there’s a school of thought that will claim that the big games could bring the best from United’s attacking talent; the sting may well be drawn by shipping goals to opponents.

Indeed, in defence, United have kept four clean sheets in their last six prior to the Blackburn home defeat, but with Phil Jones still picking up niggles and knocks, his ownership has diminished. Johnny Evans – at just 4.5, currently looks the best option for those confident that United can claim defensive returns against such stiff opposition.

Tottenham

Harry Redknapp may insist that the title tilt is still on target after dropping points at home to Wolves but, realistically, his side will need to come out of the trip to the Etihad unscathed and then muster results against the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and United in the next six. Drop more points over the next month and City may just pull away.

With five goals in the last four games, Tottenham’s attacking output has slowed markedly and, following heavy investment over the double fixtures in Gameweek 20, we’re now seeing confidence in the likes of Emmanuel Adebayor and Rafael Van der Vaart decline. Gareth Bale is likely to remain a constant – assists against West Brom and Everton have kept him ticking over and, not surprisingly, he seems set to survive a Wildcard cull.

There could also be some faith shown in Redknapp’s back four, given they have conceded just three goals in their last seven league outings. Benoit Assou-Ekotto looks set to dine off that 30-yard effort against Everton for several Gameweeks, while Michael Dawson’s return adds a formidable barrier in front of the dependable Brad Friedel. Even so, as a unit, they will be severely tested by the fixtures in front of them – a clean sheet at home to Wigan looks the only bankable return in the next six Gameweeks.

Norwich

Paul Lambert’s side are in fine form, with confidence flowing through the squad. The expected scrap against relegation looks to be a world away right now, with just one defeat in the Canaries’ seven outings.

While the defence has failed to keep a clean sheet all season, and Lambert’s midfield continues to rotate with abandon, we’ve never had more confidence in Steve Morison as an option up front. Right now, we’re seeing heavy interest in the striker, who remains priced at a lowly 5.2 in the FPL. However, while Norwich can be expected to notch regardless of the opposition, the fixture list does demand that we exercise some caution in the coming weeks.

Morison will travel to Sunderland, Swansea and Stoke in the next six – all opponents who will provide substantial resistance on their home turf. Equally, both Chelsea and United come to Carrow Road, leaving just a home clash with Bolton in Gameweek 24 as a fixture that offers high potential for attacking returns.

Be wary of…

Liverpool – Four goals in five games, with blanks in three of those matches – Liverpool’s attacking form is faltering badly, passing a heavy burden on the defence to hold firm. With Spurs, United, Everton and Arsenal on the horizon, trips to Wolves and Bolton up next look vital and clean sheets look hard to come by.

Everton – David Moyes’ side have managed just six goals in their last nine and, like Liverpool, have relied on a resilient back four to help them scrape points. With City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs to come in the next six, they will surely need to find goals, with the back line looking likely to concede.

Chelsea – Purely a short-term concern, Chelsea will travel to Norwich, Swansea and Everton in the next four, with United at Old Trafford. Whilst goals at Carrow Road look on the agenda, Andre Villas Boas’ side will be tested against those three other defences – all well capable of shutting them out.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on this WC attempt? 1.1m in the bank

    Krul, Mignolet
    Richards, Clark, Kelly, Simpson, Shotton
    Silva, Walters, Sessegnon, Bale, Dempsey
    Fletcher, Van Persie, Aguero.

I'm happy enough with my front 8. Bit unsure of my defense although they rotate reasonably well. Clark is a bit of a punt but playing midfield with decent fixtures I think he could be worth a shot...

Newcastle have been strong all season on clean sheets. Every time we think they're gonna struggle they go and pick up a couple of clean sheets.

        Simpson's worth keeping IMO.

      Like your front 8 also.

But the problem with having such a strong front 8 is that you have to play 3 at the back (as far as I'm aware) so you're gonna have to drop a decent player every week. Having said that if the fixtures rotate nicely it could work.

Nah I don't like sturridge either. I'm on WC at mo and thinking of going top heavy with Rooney Aguero RVP. Basically I can have those as a front 3 and still put out a midfield of silva dempsey bale sess and mclean with idea to trade sess to walters in a couple weeks. Still playing around with defence, which is obviously weaker, but have currently still got likes of richards, evans, vorm in there

is he here to eventually start or simply back up? arshavin is woeful and i would imagine henry is possibly due to take that left berth in due course to cover gervinho? could even replace the out of form ramsey tucking in behind rvp?

Asked today and got no replies, i think it got lost on the page or was just plain boring:)

Am having doubts about bringing Sturridge into my team.People on here are saying he’s going to go straight back in the team, am not too sure. Reason, AVB has to play Bosingwa(could play Luis) at Rightback. IMO i think it’s possible that Sturridge could have been benched and AVB preferred to have the extra defensive protection that Ramires gives? Plus now with have to factor Essien into the equation. He could slot into a midfield 3 of either Lampard/Romeu/Meireles and AVB could keep Ramires on the right and mata on the left. This could possible push Sturrigde into his prefered role as centre forward and become a rotation risk with Torres and Drogba?

Am not sure how Chelsea will line up over the next few weeks any thoughts?

Feel even more now than last season that the winter wildcard isn't great for the game. In a few weeks time we're all likely to have a variation of this front 8, with Dyer and Sturridge maybe coming in for Fletcher and Walters for some.

    Silva, Walters, Sessegnon, Dempsey, Bale
    Van Persie, Aguero, Fletcher

Even in seasons before the winter wildcard I've always enjoyed the first half of the FPL season more than the last, because teams differ more, but now it's extreme.

The normal game moves on quickly for good planners, but it punishes mistakes or make people pay to catch up. That is the way it should be in my opinion, because it helps keeping ownership of different players higher making it more interesting. One wildcard kept it that way longer.

The extra wildcard is down my priority list for fixing the game though. Reverting back to last years assist rules and a version of the BP's involving human input that's not fully dependent on flawed stats.

Hmmm, especially when Ba comes back, loads will go for an alternative for the next few weeks...

But my wildcard front 8 is currently..

Mata Valencia Dempsey Bale (Surman, could change to someone a bit better, Walters? 😉 )
Van Perise Aguero Bendtner (To be changed to Ba)

I like the WC, but think it takes away a lot of the point of the game, the days of planning weeks and weeks ahead are gone... :/

I'm downgrading Walters or Sess keeping Enrique then swapping him for Kompany (doubling up with RIchards)... but apart from that mine will be the same.

It won't be that generic though as there is no Utd or Chelsea coverage in this team. Fans of these teams will certainly be backing the likes of Mata Welbeck Rooney Nani etc to produce the goods.

Its true as those who have survived without using their first wildcards had built a very strong foundation. As for those who completely f*cked up, WCs were necessary to save the season. Now those people who f*cked up have a second chance to rectify team. So once again everybody on the same playing field.

Midfielders and strikers score considerably more points than defenders so no. If you're keen on Raylor just have him as one of your three defenders and play four players who are classified as midfielders in the game.

Cheers for the reply. So even though Raylor is playing OOP? Basically what I'm asking is do people think Raylor is a better midfield option @ 5.2 then others around same price who are actually classed as midfielders?

If, in your mind, you are classing him as a midfielder then play 2-5-3. Of course the formation will actually be 3-4-3 but you know what I mean.

Never really understood that tbh. Surely it just depends on your squad and the fixtures for that week. You wouldn't just consign yourself to the same formation every week. As for Raylor you should just think of him as a defender with great attacking potential. He's a defender in the game, so it's his chances of cleansheets that you'd take into consideration first and foremost.

If you're going to play Raylor and just think of him as a midfielder, why not just play him as one of 3 defenders in a 3-4-3 and think of it as a 2-5-3, instead of playing a 4-3-3 and thinking of it as a 3-4-3?

That's exactly what i'm thinking when Fixtures permit. It just allows me to have strong Back 4, strong 3 mids & RVP, Kun, Studge upfront.

Really considering Kompany, Richards and Aguero, with Gerrard in for Silva. Getting rid of Silva isn't ideal but City look the only good long-term defensive option. This wildcard isn't easy.

Mancini said last night that Micah should be back for Sunday. Vinny will only miss one game so if he's got a decent enough subs he should be alright for this one week.

Haven't Blackburn scored in every away PL game this season? Yakubu is out but even so Blackburn can score goals against that defence.

Mininal. I think they've only had 3 all year. With their big players missing and Blackburn propensity to get at least one goal it's not looking great for an Everton clean sheet.

I prefer Kelly purely because Fulham have a better overall defence than QPR, but who knows with the Hughes factor, Gabbidon might be a good call, and as Blue Moon says they have a good run of fixtures.

Thought you might like a slightly less generic team to look at:

    Krul Mignolet
    Riise Huth Shawcross Santon Brown
Walters Sessegnon Ben Arfa Dempsey (Gerrard)
    Zamora (Rooney) (Bent)

Idea behind the team: Sunderland, Stoke, Newcastle, Fulham all have great fixture rotation. There are always at least 2 of them with decent fixtures. The worst case situation is playing eg Huth & Zamora with tough games. Loads of differential potential. Nice way to potentially double up or better on clean sheets. The 3 players in brackets are the 3 who can be rotated every week for a new player to come in for roughly 3 games. This means you can always have your 3 first choice players ever week as the rest of the team only changes due to form, fitness, being dropped (eg might swap Arfa for Cabaye/Gutiarez; or Murphey in for Ben Arfa and Ba in for Zamora when he returns). Also when you have gameweeks like this one (big teams going head to head) there is the potential to take a huge march on the generic teams points wise whilst keeping your 3 big hitters in to try and prevent missing out on a heavy hitter big point score. Also with they money saved on the other players there is money to but whichever heavy hitters I like. Currently deciding between RVP, Aguero or Torres in for Rooney for the next 3 weeks.

      Sorry but that's crap.

Thanks for the post, it was a more interesting read than most of the RMTs on here but I think the generic teams will take a march on you most weeks. Good luck if you go ahead with it though and let us know how it works out!

No. They are not being benched. They are the 3 positions I trade for other heavy hitters, the rest of the team remains constant. one of those 3 will also be captain every week and you could swap those 3 players for whichever 3 you fancy for the next couple of gameweeks. No need to think ling term with them.

Yes that is where I got the idea from. Did they use Sunderland and Newcastle? I have looked further into it and I really can't see the downside. Mid priced players will always be inconsistent. This just allows you to pick the ones who have the best games. There is not really the worry about these players suffering a bad run of fixtures as those 3 players will spend a few games on the bench whilst the others with good fixtures play. These 4 teams were the best I found with fixtures & potential. This then allows you to concentrate on the heavy hitters and get the 3 you really want every week. They come in for a 3 game period eg this week striker in for Rooney, 2 weeks time Bent & Gerrard out for 2 heavy hitters with form and fixtures. In any more doubt look at this teams fixtures for this gameweek and look at the fixtures most generic teams will have. I know which I fancy to gain more points.

If you're still here PigeonIsland, they did use Sun and Newc. I had been going along the lines of having a solid more generic base with 4 rotating cheap defs (Ful, New, Sto, ManU) and 2 rotating mids (Sun, Sto). But this is using it to the full.

Let me know what team you settle on, I'll be interested to see it. Good luck.

I used my wildcard last week. This was the team I picked for last weeks matches. A newscastle clean sheet, Stoke clean sheet and 1 goal & 2 assists between my wildcard picks (not an outstanding result but the fixtures weren't great) still led to
One of my leagues top scores. The fixtures are great for those teams this week and i hope to clean up. The idea with the strategy is simple. Find 4 medium sized clubs who will keep clean sheets and have some star players. Fill all 7 defensive positions (between 1 & 2 from each team) pick 4 mids and 1 striker from these teams (at least 1 from each team) thenpick 3 outfield players. 1 mid, 2 attack and rotate them on a 3 week game period basis, ie Rooney is in for 1 week and I will trade him for a striker who will come invfor 3 weeks, next week bent or Gerrard out and player in for 3 weeks etc. Saves points, you play players with good fixtures, you can focus on always having the top heavy hitters, tons of differential potential.

    Vorm/Lindegaard
    Senderos, Richards, Shotton (Williamson, BAE)
    Valencia, Gerrard, Bale, Dempsey McClean

My advice would be get rid of at least one of your swansea defenders, I have the same defence as you besides them two... I have Mignlolet and Luke Young instead. We also have a similar front 8, good team, very very very common team around here, though.
