Paul Scholes is of course an Old Trafford legend, but when a 37-year-old comes out of retirement to take your place in the pecking order, you know your days are numbered. For Darron Gibson, Scholes’ unlikely return led to a move away from Old Trafford, and last Friday, he switched from Manchester to Merseyside. The much-maligned midfielder made the move to Everton on for an initial fee of just half a million pounds.

While the decision to temporarily bring Scholes out from the Hall of Fame, sealed his fate, Gibson declared a frustration that had been bubbling under for some time…

“It was hard for me at times. I think when I did get a chance I did well and obviously I was getting left out afterwards and I was playing one or two games here and there. When Scholesy came back the manager told me I was free to go.”

The 24-year-old will now be looking to resurrect his fortunes and live up to the potential that once saw his game compared to that of Roy Keane. Right now, such claims seem unfathomable and Gibson will surely settle for steady progress under David Moyes – a manager who has already taken the likes of Tim Howard and Phil Neville from Old Trafford and turned them into Goodison stalwarts.

The Statistics

Gibson played just once this season for United in the Premier League – grabbing an assist in the 5-0 romp of Wigan on Boxing Day. This lack of opportunities is in part due to an ankle injury, but it also appeared that Sir Alex Ferguson had turned his back on Gibson some months ago.

In previous seasons, Gibson has been much more involved. Last term, he played 12 Premier League games (6 as a substitute), grabbing an assist. In 2009/10 he chipped in with two goals and three assists in 15 appearances, coming off the bench nine times.

Known for a thunderous shot from distance, Gibson has also found the back of the net for Royal Antwerp and Wolves, in loan spells, as well as for the Republic of Ireland at international level. While the numbers are far from convincing, it must be said that Gibson has rarely been granted a run of regular starts – that’s something he will surely be given at his new club.

The Prospects

The Toffees have endured an unsatisfactory campaign so far, failing to string together a decent run of results. They currently sit in eleventh in the table and face stiff opposition over the next six Gameweeks, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool all on the horizon.

There’s no doubt that Everton’s key issue is a lack of goals. Just six strikes in their last nine matches tells the tale – only Wigan and QPR have scored fewer over the season. Needless to say, a lack of goals and consistent form has seen Fantasy managers keep their distance.

Handed a debut at Villa Park on Saturday, Gibson enjoyed an unremarkable first appearance but drew inevitable praise from his new manager…

“I thought Gibson played well…I thought he passed the ball well. Hopefully he’ll help us and give us something we’ve lacked a little bit. He gave us a bit of composure at times and passed it nicely.”

Gibson’s passing range is not in doubt. His ability to link play and keep possession are talents gained from his fledgling years in United’s academy. However, Moyes will be looking for more from the Irishman – notably goals from midfield. Gibson himself appears confident that he can deliver…

“I think I’m a goalscoring midfielder and hopefully I can get a few goals. I’ve scored a few long-range shots – I don’t think I’ve scored one inside the box to be honest – and if I score goals it’s a bonus for me…I’m just looking to do as well as I can for the team.”

If Gibson can offer goals and help spark a revival of fortunes at Goodison, he could yet earn some attention from Fantasy managers. With a 5.4 FPL price tag, he offers an obvious alternative to Everton’s frustrating Fantasy offering – Royston Drenthe. Landon Donovan is currently a major midfield distraction that will hog the Fantasy attention but when his loan spell concludes, Gibson could well come to the fore.

Everton may well end the season strongly; a run of five fixtures from Gameweek 30 onwards (swa WBA nor SUN sto), will see them enter a potentially critical stage of the season. If Gibson can go into this spell with his career back on track, the unlikely comparisons with Keane could return and Fantasy managers may even take notice.

Disagree with respect to Nani. He's perfectly capable of being the highest scoring midfielder the rest of the year. His inconsistency is vexing but bad fixtures don't make him a must sell, he can score against anyone.

what he said, will be keeping Nani in my wc team, Nani very rarely gets 6 or 7 points and his 2 or 3 point runs make him frustrating to own, and just when you think enough is enough, he'll suddenly deliver a 10-15 point haul, all will be forgiven and the whole cycle starts again. Glorious.

I'd upgrade Sess to Bale and downgrade Barfa to McLean, then you can play Silva, Bale and Nani every week, and rotate Walters and McLean. Not sure about doubling up on Swans though, if you can after those changes go Caulker - Senderos, if not get Kelly, you can play Richards and Huth every week( and maybe Evans after GW29) and have Simpson and Senderos as nailed on playing subs.

Wednesday's hearing into Amir Khan's controversial December defeat by Lamont Peterson has been cancelled.

The International Boxing Federation announced that Khan's promoters, Golden Boy Promotions, have withdrawn their appeal without giving a reason.

Their statement said: "The IBF received notice that Golden Boy Promotions withdrew their appeal of the Khan-Peterson bout.

"The hearing that was scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled."

It continued: "We have not received any further information on this decision by Golden Boy Promotions."

I have Vorm, Sorenson and Shotton at the moment and I'm considering bringing in another Swansea defender (Rangel) and perhaps upgrading Shotton to Shawx.

Would it be crazy to have double Stoke and Double Swansea? Their fixtures rotate so well and they're good for clean sheets, plus Shawx/Shotton & Rangel have attacking potential.

My alternatives with my budget would be Evans (rotation risk and bad fixtures), BAE (terrible fixtures) or Cahill (not sure about him yet to be honest) or even Warnock.

Senderos, Simpson and Kompany/Richards will make up the rest of my back 7.

I wouldn't bring in Walters now at 6.7m, his stats don't look good and he's relying on penalties at the moment. Perhaps look at Dempsey and try to find 1.6m, maybe from downgrading Ekotto (bad fixtures) and perhaps Rooney > Aguero.

    Helguson RVP Aguero

I planned to do Agger & Baines to Verm & Kompany for GW23, and then Gerrard to Silva the week after, but now, as Helguson and Ben Arfa aren't certain to get solid minutes do you think I should:
    A) Stick with it and hope for the best.
    B) Take TWO hits over the next two weeks to replace them.
    C) Take ONE hit, and if so, who should I get rid of.
or D) Reconsider one of my 3 previously planned transfers?

    Ta in advance.

        Probably a wise choice.

On an unrelated note, is anyone thinking that next week will be a relatively low scoring one? I have 7 players in total from United, Arse, City, Spurs and with them all playing against eachother it could be a case of putting all my eggs in one (or not enough) basket/s...

Depends if they're high scoring games or not. Plenty of teams scored big points in GW3 due to these matches.

It could be a week for differentials, I have Shotton, McClean, Dempsey, Fletcher and Gerrard(c) in action so hoping to regain some of the ground lost recently.

Gerrard (C) is risky, but I think it will pay off. Bolton are looking poor, and I think pool will pick up a few more goals with Gerrard back.

            I hope not though! 😉

Yeah it's risky but with the fixtures none of my other big hitters really appeal. Bolton are terrible and if it pays off I should see green arrows again as he only has 3.3% ownership.

    Current team:

    Krul/Ruddy

    Caulker Shotton Ekotto McAuley Simpson

    Mata Nani Surman Silva Bale

    Ade Van Persie Sturridge.

Have 2 freebies but have no idea how to use them. Really just have to think about next 2 rounds as I intend to use the wildcard before the deadline of Gw 24.

My first thoughts are Nani and Adebayor to Rooney and Sessegnon.

    What do yah reckon?

I hope you can pronounce the letter S properly 😉

      Keepers good.
Too much in defence in my opinion, Downgrade Skrtel to someone less than 5 such as Bardsley. Since you aren't doing great consider doubling/tripling up on some defences.
Midfield is OK but could be a lot stronger by downgrading the defence.
      Attack is very nice.

why do people say wait for the wildcard as long as you can?

there are going to be no MAJOR signings between now and the window. Also it's probably the case the players you are thinking now will probably be the same in 2 weeks time.

Just don't understand the waiting process going on with some people. More likely to fall behind all the wildcarders to be honest, I am thinking of pressing the wildcard button right now.

So you can see how the early signings bed into their respective teams such as Gary Cahill. Also they can have a good look at all of the in form players and probably make a much better team than the people who are wildcarding now including me.

yeah ok maybe look at how g cahill beds in but is it really worth waiting around 2 weeks to see how g freakin cahill beds into chelsea?

If any transfers are made in the next 2 weeks the people wildcarding in 2 weeks will still by none the wiser in terms of whether a player beds in or not.

They could see if Richard's hammy is serious, get Kompany back when he is a definite starter, see if McLean is a definite starter, how Sigurdsson fits in at Swansea etc.

Took a punt on the ManU attacking trio of Nani, Valencia and Rooney last GW against Bolton

Would I be silly to save a 4pt hit (FT on Yakubu out) and rely on the trio to exploit Arsenal's defensive frailties?

Or is it too much of a risk (eggs in one basket)?

Keep Moses on? Or get Raylor in? Moses keeps looking good (even against MCI), and he seems to score better away. Raylor would also cause a Kelly conflict (which I don't like doing)
