Paul Scholes is of course an Old Trafford legend, but when a 37-year-old comes out of retirement to take your place in the pecking order, you know your days are numbered. For Darron Gibson, Scholes’ unlikely return led to a move away from Old Trafford, and last Friday, he switched from Manchester to Merseyside. The much-maligned midfielder made the move to Everton on for an initial fee of just half a million pounds.

While the decision to temporarily bring Scholes out from the Hall of Fame, sealed his fate, Gibson declared a frustration that had been bubbling under for some time…

“It was hard for me at times. I think when I did get a chance I did well and obviously I was getting left out afterwards and I was playing one or two games here and there. When Scholesy came back the manager told me I was free to go.”

The 24-year-old will now be looking to resurrect his fortunes and live up to the potential that once saw his game compared to that of Roy Keane. Right now, such claims seem unfathomable and Gibson will surely settle for steady progress under David Moyes – a manager who has already taken the likes of Tim Howard and Phil Neville from Old Trafford and turned them into Goodison stalwarts.

The Statistics

Gibson played just once this season for United in the Premier League – grabbing an assist in the 5-0 romp of Wigan on Boxing Day. This lack of opportunities is in part due to an ankle injury, but it also appeared that Sir Alex Ferguson had turned his back on Gibson some months ago.

In previous seasons, Gibson has been much more involved. Last term, he played 12 Premier League games (6 as a substitute), grabbing an assist. In 2009/10 he chipped in with two goals and three assists in 15 appearances, coming off the bench nine times.

Known for a thunderous shot from distance, Gibson has also found the back of the net for Royal Antwerp and Wolves, in loan spells, as well as for the Republic of Ireland at international level. While the numbers are far from convincing, it must be said that Gibson has rarely been granted a run of regular starts – that’s something he will surely be given at his new club.

The Prospects

The Toffees have endured an unsatisfactory campaign so far, failing to string together a decent run of results. They currently sit in eleventh in the table and face stiff opposition over the next six Gameweeks, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool all on the horizon.

There’s no doubt that Everton’s key issue is a lack of goals. Just six strikes in their last nine matches tells the tale – only Wigan and QPR have scored fewer over the season. Needless to say, a lack of goals and consistent form has seen Fantasy managers keep their distance.

Handed a debut at Villa Park on Saturday, Gibson enjoyed an unremarkable first appearance but drew inevitable praise from his new manager…

“I thought Gibson played well…I thought he passed the ball well. Hopefully he’ll help us and give us something we’ve lacked a little bit. He gave us a bit of composure at times and passed it nicely.”

Gibson’s passing range is not in doubt. His ability to link play and keep possession are talents gained from his fledgling years in United’s academy. However, Moyes will be looking for more from the Irishman – notably goals from midfield. Gibson himself appears confident that he can deliver…

“I think I’m a goalscoring midfielder and hopefully I can get a few goals. I’ve scored a few long-range shots – I don’t think I’ve scored one inside the box to be honest – and if I score goals it’s a bonus for me…I’m just looking to do as well as I can for the team.”

If Gibson can offer goals and help spark a revival of fortunes at Goodison, he could yet earn some attention from Fantasy managers. With a 5.4 FPL price tag, he offers an obvious alternative to Everton’s frustrating Fantasy offering – Royston Drenthe. Landon Donovan is currently a major midfield distraction that will hog the Fantasy attention but when his loan spell concludes, Gibson could well come to the fore.

Everton may well end the season strongly; a run of five fixtures from Gameweek 30 onwards (swa WBA nor SUN sto), will see them enter a potentially critical stage of the season. If Gibson can go into this spell with his career back on track, the unlikely comparisons with Keane could return and Fantasy managers may even take notice.

    For Elnino and Fuzzy espeically...

Today I was talked into the fact that doubling up on City's defense might be better than having Aguero. So I now must decide between the following:

    Aguero team:
    Vorm Schwarzer
    richards Enrique Evans Caulker Simpson
    Dempsey Bale Valencia Silva Dyer
    Studge Aguero RVP

    or

    Super defense:
    Vorm Schwarzer
Richards Caulker Huth simpson Enrique (becomes Kompany next week)
    Bale Silva Sess Walters Dyer
    Studge Rooney RVP

I was just about set on the first one: the cheaper defense is more my style. But I'll be damned if I don't love the potential of that second team. Am I crazy, boys?

id go for a combination of the 2, would look somewhat like this:

      vorm schwarzer
      richards enrique(kompany) simpson caulker santon
      bale silva dempsey sess dyer
      studge aguero rvp

i would go rooney until gw24 then switch over to aguero

You can see the problem though, right? If I end up with Richards, Kompany, and Silva, I cant get Aguero without dropping one.

What youre basically saying is to reduce Huth in order to get Dempsey. I understand this, but I honestly think there is very little between Walters and Dempsey, Walters is in the better team, and he is 2 million cheaper. Dempsey (and Fulham) have looked less then impressive lately, too.

im with you newman. wishing i didnt drop kompany so fast on my wc, didnt want to lose .1, got ricards, aguero and silva. i think we become too attack happy when fixtures are favourable when in reality, good attacking players get hauls in tough fixtures as well, its the defenders that benefit most. I think Tosey has stated his plan to triple up on city defense. Cant argue his reasoning.

i finally made space for dempsey, taking out valencia after deciding on no utd for now. probably the biggest make or break decision i had to make. really could go either way. if dempsey doesnt deliver in the next two, i can straight swap him for valencia, and i already have bale and silva, and sess, with sess dropping for walters in a couple weeks. so im trying my best to accomodate them all. 🙂

      Hey Newman!

I'm totally for the super defense idea. Had suggested the same yest - don't trust more than 1 City attacker for the moment. And Silva's ever reliable for that spot. Also, I see you've slotted Rooney in which could be sweet. Looking good the 2nd team.

I'd have Enrique over Huth every day of the week irrespective of fixtures. I don't trust Stoke's defence against easier oppositions. They tend to lack that drive to keep CS but if you're feeling it, just do it.

Yeah I think so. GW22 isn't great for me fixture wise, but GW23 should be fairly strong and then the fixtures really swing around.

As for Weswood, I doubt he will start, but may as well put him first choice as he has an easier fixture than Ruddy and will either start or not play at all I imagine...

Unfortunately I'm 0.1m short of doing the same trade. Not a fan of hits either, but Ade seems to have gone off the boil and I have attacking coverage in Bale. I'd like to think Sess/Sturridge would outscore Ramsey/Ade +4 over the next 2 GWs... Another option is Reo-Coker -> Mclean?

The safe move (i.e. no hit) would definitely be the Reo to McLean one. If not that, then the double transfer of Sturridge/Sess in for Ade/Ramsey works. Wait though to hear an update on Sturridge later this week

Sorry this is long. Re-posting this from a couple of pages back. Got help from ILA but would like additional opinions. Tinkering with WC teams with a plan of doing this right before GW24. Which of the 3 looks better?

    A) Krul, Vorm
    Kompany, Enrique, Evans, Naylor, Simpson
    Nani, Silva, Bale, Sessegnon, Moses/Dyer/Sigurdsson
    Rooney, Sturridge, Morison

    B) Krul, Vorm
    Kompany, Enrique, Evans, Walker, Simpson
    Valencia, Silva, Bale, Sessegnon, Moses/Dyer/Sigurdsson
    RVP, Sturridge, Morison

    C) Hart, Bogdan
    Kompany, Enrique, Evans, Walker, Simpson
    Valencia, Silva, Bale, Sessegnon, Moses/Dyer/Sigurdsson
    Rooney, Sturridge, Morison

Would look at Sturridge –> Ba eventually; and could do Walker --> Richards in B

      A) for me, but perhaps with Senderos/Kelly instead of Naylor (you already have Vorm and Fulham have good fixtures).

      B) and C) have too much invested in defence and I still think Nani will comfortably outscore Valencia from now to the end of the season.

my word. that probably explains why you havent had a top 100k gw score all season. not to twist the knife any further or anything. its a shame to have to spent that much on one player but he is the most essential player in the game. its almost too late now. it seems your best bet is to climb the ranks with players with low ownership.

if you do yak->fletcher, with one dropping in price and the other rising, you could take a 2-3 week punt, get yak back, and have made a profit in the process rather than holding on to him. Of course nevermind if you have no desire for fletcher.

Thing is I feel guilty buying Fletch and benching him this week. Gotta play Bale and Nani you know!

I can see Nani coming good this week.

I played my WC this past gw. Everything was set up for a "play two of Sess/Walters/Yak each week until Ba is back" strategy. That lasted all but 22min until Yak raised his leg, like a dog having a piss.

Def is simples. Enrigue every week with Ful/manU rotating with New/Stoke.

    morning all.

time for my first Name & Shame of the week:

    Sorensen,
    Williamson, Richards, JEvans
    Dempsey, Sess, Bale, Valencia
    Rooney, RvP, ?????

    Krul, HBA, McAuley, BAE

defence is dodgy and still need someone around 7.0M to fill that forward spot.

    any thought?

I assume your rotating HBA(which I don't like at all BTW) and Sess? So the fwd should play most games until Ba is back?

do HBA and Sess rotate? that's news to me 😀

i wanted HBA as a cheaper mid/sub to fallback on but now he might get more game time with Cab out for a while so is he a better option than the rest of my midfield?

i wasn't planning around the return of Ba really, just wanted an option for this week.

THinking Ade>torres and Drenthe > Mcclean for a 4 pt hit..

Another way to put it will be.. missing out on aguero+mcclean by 0.1

Sess and Zamora OR Dempsey and Bendtner OR Silva and Morison(Nor) OR Torres and Mcclean OR any other combo u guys can think of ??

Already have Nani Mata Bale Rvp Studge Allen.

OR should I go with the -8 pt hit..

    Ade> Graham --------- Drenthe > Sess ------------ Allen > Dempsey

Just seems Aguero (TOT, eve) isnt essential when i have silva and no utd coverage.

Similar to me, but sticking to my plan of playing WC after GW23 deadline. At which point they will probably start ripping it up. :&

    RMWCT plz!

    Version ??

    Hart - Linde
(they rotate perfect all season, just that Linde could be dropped of course, no shame in playing Hart all the time tho)

    Simpson - Brown - Evans - Richards - Cahill
(Again, perfect rotation between Simpson/Brown and Evans/Richards and Cahill playing most of the games, again... Evans could be dropped sometimes)

    Bale - Silva - Walters - Valencia - Sess
(Will always play Bale, Silva, Valencia. Walters @home and Sess will rotate with 2 forwards)

    RvP - Fletcher - Sturridge
Of course, RvP will play all games if poss, Fletcher and Sturridge will rotate with Sess. Fletcher - Yak when he´s back and Sturridge - Ba when he´s back.

    0,6 in the bank
Is it worth the risk with rotation on Lindegaard and Evans or should I go for more safe options like rotating Ful - Swa players?

I've just been looking at GK/DEF rotation for when I WC after GW23 and came across this post from Goose from a month ago that I bookmarked - very useful so reposting:

    Goose says:

    WARNING: LONG POST INCOMING!

I’veee been bored and im sad so ive looked into defensive rotations for the January wildcard (GW21 onwards.)

I know people have different ways of doing it but my method is I basically omitted any of the generally acknowledged “Top 6″ i.e. City, United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs & Liverpool as people don’t tend to like to rotate their defenders at their prices.

I then went through the remaining teams and compared fixtures looking at:

1.How they rotate in terms of home and away so at least 1 team was at home.
2.The number of times a team plays a “Top 6” side at home and the other team doesn’t have an “easy” home fixture.

Through my findings the following combinations are what I feel are the best ones in terms of minimal occurrences of both teams being away and number of times one team is playing a top 6 side and the other teams fixture aint that great either. These are the numbers and details of the Problem Gameweeks (PG):

    Aston Villa / Stoke:
    Away/Away = 0
    Top 6 Side at Home = 5
    PG: MNC/ful ars/MNC CHE/wig TOT/qpr wba/ARS

    Aston Villa / WBA:
    Away/Away = 1
    Top 6 Side at Home = 5
    PG: wol/sto MNC/wol bla/CHE CHE/eve TOT/bol nor/ARS

    Blackburn / Stoke:
    Away/Away = 1
    Top 6 Side at Home = 4
    PG: wol/che bol/MNC MNU/wig LIV/vil tot/ARS

    Fulham / WBA:
    Away/Away = 1
    Top 6 Side at Home = 2
    PG: vil/mnu CHE/mnc tot/ARS

    Fulham / Swansea:
    Away/Away = 2
    Top 6 Side at Home = 4
    PG: mnc/wba qpr/sto bla/ARS vil/MNC CHE/qpr tot/LIV

    Fulham / Norwich:
    Away/Away = 1
    Top 6 Side at Home = 4
    PG: bla/wba qpr/MNU CHE/tot liv/MNC eve/LIV

    Fulham / Stoke:
    Away/Away = 2
    Top 6 Side at Home = 3
    PG: bla/liv vil/che MNU/mnc CHE/vil eve/ARS

    Newcastle / Swansea:
    Away/Away = 1
    Top 6 Side at Home = 5
    PG: ful/sun bla/CHE ars/MNC LIV/tot MNC/mnu eve/LIV

    Newcastle / Sunderland:
    Away/Away = 0
    Top 6 Side at Home = 6
    PG: tot/ARS ars/LIV LIV/mnc swa/TOT MNC/ful eve/MNU

Now with this info you can make your own interpretation as to the best route to go based on price of players, how you think the team will perform etc. Purely looking at difficult weeks the Fulham / WBA combo is best with only really 3 weeks which are problem but it depends how much you trust WBA to keep clean sheets. Personally I like the look of Fulham / Stoke, they have only 5 problem weeks, the 2 main ones being both teams away from home but the other 3 games, you can make a case for saying you would fancy Fulham or Stoke at home to anyone on their day.

I hope this is clear and is of help to some people. Sorry again about the long post!

Let us hope that Goose's bloody theory works - I have Senderos, McAuley and Shawcross, and Krul is my goalkeeper ...

Tempted to play Fletcher this week, but retain the funds for Sturridge should he hit form again.
