The curtain has fallen on gameweek twenty-one, prompting our regular round-up. We take a look at a certain Swansea winger who has come to the fore, the increased stability of Man City’s defence and, of course, sign off by drawing a line under “those” assists awarded to Wayne Rooney in the win over Bolton…

The Player

With the winter wildcards in play, Nathan Dyer chose the perfect moment to force himself into Fantasy managers’ thoughts with a devastating wing display against Arsenal last Sunday. A goal and assist from the Swansea man helped him to the maximum bonus, returning a 13 point haul for his role in the 3-2 triumph at the Liberty Stadium. With a goal in the recent FA Cup win over Barnsley, Dyer has now netted for Brendan Rodgers’ side in each of his last three appearances.

While Michel Vorm conceded more than a single goal at home for the first time this season, the Swansea attacking returns go from strength to strength. In the nine matches from gameweek 11-19, they scored just 6 goals but have since netted 5 times in their last two, with Dyer clearly instrumental in their much-improved attacking threat.

Priced at just 4.7, he’s forging a strong claim as the cut-price midfield option in our Fantasy squads of late and while the likes of Victor Moses and James McClean offer viable alternatives, Dyer’s clearly capable of explosive returns more synonymous with far pricier midfield options. He has now produced double figures in back-to-back gameweeks – perhaps surprisingly, this is a feat that David Silva has yet to achieve this season. With team mate Gylfi Sigurdsson, priced at 5.0, also looking a potential bargain with his share of set-pieces, Dyer looks likely to be one of the main contenders for acquisition over the upcoming period, with 25,000 Fantasy managers already drafting him in on the back of his weekend performance.

The Team

Last night’s 1-0 win over Wigan sent Man City three points clear at the top of the table and again served a reminder of their upturn in defensive Fantasy returns. Deprived of the services of Vincent Kompany through suspension and with Micah Richards an absentee due to a hamstring strain, City nevertheless produced a resolute display at the back to chalk up their fifth clean sheet in the last six games, with a late goal at Sunderland the only time Joe Hart has been beaten since gameweek 15.

What’s particularly significant about this is that gameweek 15 was, of course, the 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge- the first time City tasted defeat this season. Since then, it seems Roberto Mancini has reigned in his side’s attacking tendencies and turned to their defensive solidity to grind out results, particularly on their travels. The league leaders have scored just once in their three away games since the Chelsea loss, whereas up to and including that game, they netted 25 times in eight away fixtures- a real source of frustration for those banking on big returns from the likes of Sergio Aguero away from the Etihad.

At home, they continue to prosper going forward, with 7 in their last three home fixtures but again, the defence has shone, with not a single goal conceded. A run of fixtures that reads (TOT, eve, FUL, avl, BLA, BOL, swa), while looking enticing for Aguero in terms of both goals and as a strong captaincy option, also looks hugely appealing for defensive returns. Doubling up at the back on the likes of Kompany and Richards looks a real tactical alternative over the upcoming month or two, with City’s defensive unit producing points on a more consistent basis right now, as Mancini’s tightens up at the back.

The Talking Point

Ever since Robin Van Persie was denied an assist for Thomas Vermaelen’s goal back in Gameweek 11, it became clear that we’d be revisiting similar cases in the near future. Ten Gameweeks later and the FPL’s definition of an assist is brought to the fore once again, sparking much discussion, dividing Fantasy managers.

While the Arsenal skipper saw his points removed on that cold November morning, Wayne Rooney’s owners were spared the indignity of having their points removed as, after the Press Association’s review process, both assists were adjudged to be valid.

Of course Rooney’s owners will have been content with the outcome. The rest of us will either feel indifferent about this recent case, or feel somewhat aggrieved that conclusive proof of Danny Welbeck’s touch on Rooney’s cross for Paul Scholes’ opener was not gathered, while, at the same time, slightly baffled as to how the Press Association could make out a definite touch by Rooney in the tangle with David Wheater.

We all have our opinion on the events. Mine directly conflicts with the end result – for me, neither of Rooney’s assists should stand. That’s not part of agenda to punish rival managers – it’s because, in my opinion, Welbeck’s touch looks clear enough, while Rooney’s role in Welbeck’s goal is fuzzy to say the least. It seems that the decision makers have looked to be 100% certain on the touch in the first goal, and then abandoned this policy when it comes to the second. For me, I don’t see how they can be certain on the Welbeck goal – Opta’s decision to award no assist for the goal only compounds matters.

The events open a familiar can of worms still further. Clearly, while the assist rule has been changed to add clarity and outlaw the objective view of an individual, when decisions go to the wire, ultimately it has to come down to one or more person’s view of events. Someone at the Press Association made these decisions based on the footage. As players of the game, we have to take that decision as final and move on.

We can however, push for change. The fact is, the new assist definition does not totally remove the opinion of an individual – it makes it less frequent, but it still leads to occasional scenarios where we’re analysing hairline glances, the merest of touches and the correct outcome of a mess of limbs. There will be further examples, there may even have been earlier cases, where players will miss out or be awarded assists wrongly, simply because suitable angles and footage are unavailable. Should such a case occur in a crucial Gameweek, at a critical stage in our Fantasy seasons, suddenly the onus on the individual to come to the right conclusion will be huge. That’s a concern. In fairness to those involved, the decisions can be tough to call.

It’s important to stress that the FPL’s new definition is not the root cause – we would have been debating both Rooney’s assists under last season’s rule. We have to ask, however – should such excruciating detail be a factor? Should an individual be asked to judge an unintentional glance of the ball, using a variety of camera angles, to come to a conclusion on an assist?

Surely we can use more definitive data? Was the touch registered as a positive action in the Press Asocciation statistics – was it a pass, cross, or a header won? If not, then it’s not an assist. Did the defender make a clearance, interception or block in the penalty area before the attacking player scored? If he did, then no assist is awarded. An individual still needs to come to the correct conclusion, but all this data is already being gathered and at least all these actions are positive. They should all be defined and clear. Far clearer than an unintentional scuff off the studs.

It’s a simplistic view, to be debated at another time but it’s clear that this season’s redefined assist ruling is not the silver bullet we’re looking for. Maybe that ideal solution doesn’t even exist, but in my view, the events of Gameweek 21 emphasise the need to start searching again for next season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Personally I wouldn't sell Aguero - he can score against any opponent and the Wolves vs Villa game will be close but don't expect lots of goals - Bent was lucky to score this week. If you need to take a punt take it either on Bellamy or Torres

you're wrong on this one mark and it's very poor form to push this given your links to fpl and the platform you have

there is absolutely no evidence welbeck touches it, none at all - the ball is spinning, and bobbles on the pitch, welbeck pulls his foot away, you cannot with any certainty suggest a touch. It would be a disgraceful decision to give it to welbeck.

Regarding the second unless you've seen unreleased shots of the goal then you're also basing the 'no touch' on guess work (im assuming you dont have him in your team and had a crappy captain choice) getting in from the boozer and watching on MOTD is not a way to call it

got a lot of time for you fella but this is poor form from you.

I'm assuming you have him in your team have him captained. It has amazed me to see the Rooney brigade accuse the non-Rooney brigade of bias. You're both going to be be biased.

I think they actually made the right call on the first one - only thing is it's the same right call that should have been made with RVP - no clear touch = original assist keeps it.

Oh and even FPL say that it's not conclusive rather than not being a Welbeck touch.

Blind indeed. I see no confusion at all. Watched in just twice and both times it is glaringly obvious that Welbeck touched it. Whether the rules should be written to counted that as an assist is a separate debate, but he touched it 100%.

The only thing Mark is "pushing" is for any future season's assists to be stats-based, which would be more objective. How is that poor form?

In the article he is merely sharing his opinion with us of these particular assists - as many others have done. I see no reason why he shouldn't do that.

I don't get it - the decision is made Rooney is keeping his assists - I'm just giving my opinion and outlining that it's a problem that we have to examine such incidents in this detail because such decisions are so marginal.

What I'm trying to say in the article is that we need to look again at the assist ruling - I'm not trying to get the Rooney's points reversed, it's done and dusted - I'm trying to ensure that the right decision is always made in a game we all play and love, and that these type of arguments are minimised.

Right now, I just think the system makes it more difficult than it needs to to ensure we always get the right decision. The fact myself and others don't agree with the decision in this case, indicates that perhaps there's work to be done. I offered my opinion to illustrate this but clearly some have taken this the wrong way.

I can't speak for others but, as I've said elsewhere, this has nothing to do with my own team. If you really think that I'm arguing this because I don't have Rooney and because I scored badly in the Gameweek, then you've got me all wrong and giving me little credit. You've also failed to notice that I did ok this Gameweek, rubbish captain or not 😉

If I do have any influence whatsoever - would you rather me pass on to the FPL that the assist rule is perfect, the bonus points are great etc - or would it be best for me seek out the problems outlined by the community here and communicate them, in hope of getting things improved? Some have previously critisied me for not speaking out when things have seemed amiss - now it seems I'm being told by some to keep quiet and stop stirring the pot.

Fantastic post re the assists Mark, they got it all wrong. To award an assist in either of those cases meant either One or none (for Rooney) had to be the outcome. To award two was a complete mistake. The amount of people who saw Welbeck's touch is so overwhelming it is impossible to say it was inconclusive however the decisions have been made and it is time to forget it. hopefully next season will bring a better review and rules system.
And Rambo i think it's fairly obvious Mark is looking for the fairest outcome, to accuse him of abusing his position of 'power' is absolutely ridiculous but not surprising coming from a clown like yourself.

I'd be finding the £0.9m to get Aguero were it me. Otherwise you're in Mid-priced hell. Lots of options, many of which are not terribly tempting. Agbongo, Fletch, Studge, Crouch all worth contemplating.

Not a WC team but will be dumping Everton before 23. Still thinking of Anichebe instead of Dzeko...yeah I know...crazy...

    Richards, Baines, Raylor (Simpson, Shotton)

Bale, Drenthe, Mata, VDV (Ben Afra)

    Sturridge, Dzeko, RVP

Armband on either: Sturridge, Mata, Baines

    Advice is welcomed thanks!

So who is on GW23 puntwatch?
In case you aren't aware we will have the line-ups to quite a few teams before the deadline. My list so far:
    Swansea: Siggy
Chelsea: Lampard, Luiz, Cahill, Ramires at RW
    Spurs: VDV, Defoe, Lennon
City: Balotelli, Dzeko, Nasri, Clichy, Savic, Kolarov
Liverpool: Bellamy, Gerrard in attacking position, Kuyt, Carroll, Maxi
Man U: Rafael, Park, Jones OOP, Lindegaard, Hernandez, Welbeck

Out of those I most like the look of Kolarov and Maxi if they start and Welbeck or Hernandez. What do other people think? Any additions?

He can play on both sides and as an AM = younger Mata with more pace, tad less creativity.

Nah I doubt AVB will change his 4-3-3 ideal formation - he's about to build an empire around it, just like Porto.

Sturridge could be a back-up striker/winger. IMPACT SUB

I heard about Papiss Demba Cissé's imminent move to Newcastle from a good source yesterday, so I'm not surprised that it's going ahead. SC Freiburg's sporting director Dirk Dufner has now confirmed that the Senegalese striker has flown to Newcastle for a medical.

It's a very good move for Newcastle - as Attila said, only Mario Gomez (46) has scored more Bundesliga goals in the last two years than Cissé (37). Unlike Gomez, Cissé did it for a Freiburg team who are permanently fighting relegation. Having held out last year, Freiburg started to get worried during the winter break that they might not be able to recoup €12 million euros by selling him in the summer, and so cut their losses and agreed to a move at that price now. Freiburg bought a replacement this morning in the shape of Sebastian Freis of 1.FC Köln, so the writing was on the wall.

Cissé's attitude hasn't been right for a while - turning up late for training and making it clear that he wanted a transfer. Mind you, the last Bundesliga striker to behave like that was Demba Ba, and that didn't turn out too badly for Newcastle either.

case closed on assists as far as i'm concerned. had they awarded them and not provided an explanation then fair enough, but they've provided an explanation which is consistent with everything else which has gone on this season.
i was always in the camp that rooney should keep the first as there's not enough evidence of a welbeck touch, based on what was explained in the article about the comparison i too am a bit confused they've seen a more noticeable touch from rooney in the second assist but i think you have to trust that they did, although the whole OPTA didn't award it thing does complicate matters.
it's gone, can see why he got it, and if true it's both deserved and consistent, so i see no issue for the future

      To put it simply...

      Ireland - No.

unless u arent gonna play him and if thats the case then youd be better with a budget pick like Moses or Dyer.

have u not seen enough of torres? he can play good but he can't score, simple as that. taking a punt for an assist or two is not worth it. aguero could even outscore him anyway
