As the second half of the season starts to kick in, Brendan Rodgers has turned to a familiar face to boost the Swansea midfield ranks. The acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson on loan from 1899 Hoffenheim until the end of the campaign reunites the duo, with Rodgers having previously managed the midfielder during his tenure as Reading boss.

The Icelandic international, voted Player of the Year by the Hoffenheim fans last term, missed much of his side’s pre-season and has subsequently failed to establish himself in the first-team, making a mere seven appearances this term. Given that the Bundesliga club paid in excess of £6.5m for his services, though, he’s clearly a highly-rated individual.

The idea, then, is to help Sigurdsson return to full fitness before he heads back to Germany at the end of the season. Priced at a very reasonable 5.0 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has already made an impression. Coming off the bench last Sunday against Arsenal, he took less than twenty minutes of his debut to make a difference, setting up Danny Graham to fire home the winner in the 3-2 Liberty Stadium thriller.

The Statistics

Sigurdsson was handed trials at both Preston and Arsenal before signing on an Academy scholarship with Reading back in 2005. He made his debut for the Royals in the 2008-09 campaign but was farmed out on a couple of short-term loans that season, making a total of 20 appearances for Crewe and Shrewsbury, scoring 5 goals and providing a single assist.

He stayed at the Championship side for just over a couple of years, returning 19 goals and 10 assists in just 43 appearances before Hoffenheim snapped him up in August 2010. Sigurdsson went on to play 28 times in his first season in the German top-flight, scoring 9 times and producing 6 assists but his impact has been minimal at best this time round, with a single assist to his name.

The Prospects

If his cameo against the Gunners is indicative of what’s to come, Sigurdsson looks set to shine amidst Swansea’s passing game. Further analysis of the stats shows that Sigurdsson flourished in his only full season under Rodgers, producing 21 goals and 8 assists in 44 games. It’s no surprise, then, that the Swans boss couldn’t hide his delight upon completion of the move:

He is a terrific young player. When I went in to manage at Reading, he was a young player who had showed signs in pre-season, and I really liked him and stuck him in the team. He is a real threat with his shooting, and he understands the game – he is a clever boy. Our best chance was to get him on loan and it is a terrific move for the club. We will review it and look at it after the season finishes.

Sigurdsson will add a much-needed goal threat from the midfield area. Joe Allen, with 2 goals, is the only member of the Swansea central three to find the net this season and the new boy’s eye for goal means he’ll be played as the furthest forward of the trio in Rodgers’ 4-3-3. With an outstanding set-piece ability, he’s likely to be on corners and free-kicks too, as was illustrated in his brief cameo last weekend.

Whether Sigurdsson is ready for a start as he builds up his fitness is another matter entirely; it may well be Rodgers affords him game time from the bench until his stamina is ready for the frenetic pace of the Premier League. Rodgers has shown he has the intelligence and confidence to stick to his passing ethos and has a keen understanding of the type of player that makes his system click. His faith in Sigurdsson is absolute, suggesting the twenty-two year old could well help the Welsh side step up yet another level in the second half of the season.

I'd go with Dempsey instead and upgrade Moses.

Friedel is a waste with Spurs fixtures too. Lindy/Sorenson be better.

Love the mega cheap Moses-McClean rotation in midfield. Eyed that one up myself.

Friedel is the skidmark on your team in my view. Even if it is only for the next few GWs you aren't going to want to waste a freebie on a keeper.

Clark and Gerrard are semi-punts, nice to gamble and have fun with the game once in a while though.

I really like the Clark/Shotton combo. 8.8 for nicely rotating defenders who play in midfield. Midfield is the only place where I'm unsure. I think Gerrard to Dempsey and McClean to Sess makes a lot of sense. But if Gerrard does well then you'll look like a genius.

Considering taking a 2 week punt on Lamps (nor) & (swa) and giving him the armband this week.

However it would mean benching Bale this week (mci) and then benching Flethcer next week (LIV). Any thoughts on weather it would be a good idea? Thanks.

Let me start by saying this is my first year participating in any type of Fantasy league, and it's been quite fun (and actually haven't followed PL seriously for too long, either, honestly). Which is partly terrible because now I have to stop making fun of my friends who get so wrapped in the American football version. This community - not just the staff, features, and stats but also the forum posters - have been a great resource and really well-done.

So...I don't exactly have an RMT, but I have a conundrum at the back for this week.

At my disposal are Krul and Vorm; Richards, Williamson, Kelly, Caulker, and Enrique.

    Here's my thought:

Krul and Enrique I feel OK with, and I'm tempted to start Kelly AND Williamson, even though they're playing each other.

I don't think a 0-0 draw is an outrageous possibility, and I'd look like a genius for making that call. Plus, I think Spurs will score (given that City will be one of the few teams not intimidated by the Bale-Lennon wings, thus not compacting their D that much, thus hopefully turning that game into an entertaining wide-open shootout).

Is this out of line, or am I making at least a little sense (or the best of an awkward lineup this week)? So that I end up with

Krul; Enrique, Kelly, Williamson (Richards 2nd sub; Caulker 3rd sub).

I've done it before at the start of the season with Villa and Fulham (hoping for 0-0). Newcastle don't look like scoring much so I think Fulham have a great chance of a clean sheet and Fulham only managed one against 10 man Blackburn.

I think you're making the best of an awkward line-up. Definitely agree that Newcastle and Fulham both have a better shot at a clean sheet thatn city or spurs this week. I'll be benching BAE and Jones in favour of Brown and Simpson. Shame Brown might not play.

what I'm leaning towards, especially at it leaves me money to do Huth - Skrtel in GW30. To get Ba I will either lose Torres if he's still misfiring (though they do say form is temporary) or downgrade Nani and lose Morison

WC Q: Keeper to rotate alongside Vorm?

    A) Krul
    B) Sorenson
    C) Get rid of Vorm and choose another keeper rotation

I'm tempted to go with Sorenson since he is cheap but the rotation with Vorm falters after GW28. Should I just spend the extra 0.6m and go for Krul? OR should I get rid of Vorm... although I'm hesitant to do so since I've had him since he was 4.0m.

Admittedly Stokes home fixtures do look very good, at least until GW28. But then again so does Newcastle's!
Yeah I've been rotating QPR keepers (currently stuck with Cerny!) with Vorm all season long. It worked early on but then off course QPR started conceding and I just played Vorm every week. I guess Kenny could still be an option with Hughes now in charge.

        Cheers.

Barcelona would want to buy a decent keeper, Valdes and Pinto are rubbish
