In the midst of the January wildcard season, many Fantasy managers are looking to shoehorn as many big guns into their revamped line up as possible. Every penny counts and plenty are on the hunt for regular scoring, cheap to mid-price third striker to free up funds for the likes of Robin Van Persie and Sergio Agüero.

Amongst the standout prospects in this category is Wolves striker Steven Fletcher. Since joining the Midlands club from Burnley in 2010, Fletcher has been crucial to Mick McCarthy’s attack, racking up an impressive 19 goals in 44 games.

This season he’s already scored nine goals, provided one assist and accumulated 13 bonus points for his efforts, with a brace against Sunderland in game week 14 among the pick of his performances. With his eye for goal, Fletcher has managed an average of 5.1 points per game, a ratio which puts the Scot in the top ten forwards this season.

So-called big clubs clearly hold no fear for Fletcher. He has now netted away to Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs, having added Harry Redknapp’s side to his list of top gun scalps last weekend, with a typical close-range finish. Indeed, Fletcher seems to thrive more on the road, scoring six of his nine goals away from the home comforts of Molineux.

If you’re on the lookout for a flair striker who can mesmerise defenders with a mazy dribble or unleash a furious lightning strike from 30 yards out, then Fletcher is not for you. In the wonderful world of Fantasy football, however, it doesn’t matter how they go in, as long as they hit the back of the net. What he lacks in style he makes up for in the consistency of a traditional goal poacher. All his goals this season have come from inside the box, with six of those headers.

For those still looking for a replacement for Newcastle’s Demba Ba, who is currently on African Cup of Nations duty, or seeking to transfer out Yakubu, who starts a three-match ban in gameweek 22 after his studs up challenge at the weekend, Fletcher seems to be a plum choice for that potentially lucrative third striker spot. Already, he has risen in price on the back of that goal at the Lane and, as the most transferred-in forward in the gameweek, is now on the verge of yet another price hike. Fletcher currently sits at a more than reasonable 6.0 but looks likely to move to 6.1 overnight.

A glance at their upcoming schedule shows the fixtures certainly fall kindly for Wolves. Over the next seven gameweeks, they play host to (AVL, LIV, WBA, BLA) and travel to (qpr, new, ful), and, as McCarthy looks to steer his team clear of the drop zone and further up the table, Fletcher appears a thoroughly enticing proposition.

If Fletcher rises again tonight and Agbon rises before sat, it will mean I have managed to increase my team value by 0.2m....HURRAY (though I won't be keeping either). Anyone do the same?? Did any other player rise twice this week?

ok, but what about every other week? Bale can perform against anyone.

I also don't get this United fixtures thing. I appreciate that they have some tough games coming, but they've got a better chance of a CS in those games than most sides (same goes for City, Spurs or Pool). Ok they may let in 1 vs Arsenal, but not many teams HAVE stopped Arsenal scoring this season and only Newcastle have kept a cs against United.

You will always bench Walters away from home, he does nothing, check his history, essentially you will be playing Walters at home and Sess away.

I'd lose Richards over Enrique there, yes City are good defensively, but so are Pool and that way you spread the risk out, lose Richards for JEvans, upgrade Shotton to Huth and spend the rest on your mid if you need to.

just to share my defence line, can someone give some opinion on it. have posted before, but want to discuss about it with the pros.

    komp enrique huth cahill senderos

why huth?? he is a goal threat, and is due a goal. looking at his stats, he is as attacking as a mid, in terms of shots on goal.

why enrique?? despite crap fixture, liverpool always get CS, and i believe they will grab a few CSs not matter how schiit the fixture is.

why cahill?? a cheap way to get into chelsea defence. a CB of terry and cahill, it is hard to not get CS.

why senderos?? fixture, and fulham got solid defence at home

why komp?? city is having a good CS form now, and komp is a goal threat.

I have nothing against your argument, I just think that's too much money tied up in defence, you have a near 7 million defender, a 6 million defender, a near 6 million defender. That's nearly 30 million on defenders

My back line will be Richards (6.3) Huth (5.6) Evans (4.5) Senderos (4.3) and Raylor (4.8, which is his selling price)

That's 5 million less with the same defensive prospects and pretty similar attacking ones (I will swap Huth for Skrtel in GW30)

        there are 2 plans:
silva bale walters moes + 5.X mid, who mainly is a short punt e.g. ireland
        kun rvp stu

play 433 most of the week

        OR

        silva bale walters sess dempsey
        stu fletcher rvp

        can also do sess>moses

On the 2nd option id do either sess or walter -> cheap midfielder (moses or Dyer)

And upgrade Sturridge as Chelsea have tough fixtures. If you can upgrade him to Silva then you would have an excellent team imo.

walters is a must-have for till GW28 IMO, his fixture is too hard to ignore.
after that, he will be out for any midfielder who have good fixture+form for a short 2-3GWs punt.

Yeah, sry meant upgrade Sturridge to Aguero in my last post, not Silva of course!

Stoke have very good fixtures, so it is kinda hard to leave out Walters but that exactly what ive forced myself into doing so i can have. I just think Sessegnon is going to do a lot in the the next few weeks in a rejuvinated Sunderland team under Martin O'Neill and Stoke have been inconsistent, you can never be sure what they are going to do plus they have Europa League again next month. My mid/for is looking like this atm:

              Sess Silva Demps Bale

              Aguero RVP Fletcher

Sounds good but personally id swap ramirez/sess with mcClean/sigurdson so you dont have a big headache who to play each week and vorms fixtures are pretty horrible

hmm.. the thing with Mclean is i´d stress if he starts every week. Already have Dyer and Vorm, so Siggie would seem a silly move and also Vorm´s done me so proud till now... I´d hate to show him the door 🙂

Cahill sounds so good, but almost every1 agrees that City will keep a few cleanies and they´re both attacking threats as well...

I wouldn't double up on City defence though Liv do have tough fixtures, but I'd lose Richards to a cheapie (say Evans or Brown) use the money to get Nani or Valencia in for Ramires and I also woudl lose Ba, no point using a wc to have a player who you will HAVE to bench every week for a few weeks, get someone else in, maximise your points now, and you can get Ba in when he comes back, that's what transfers are for.

Evans... meh 😉 Just don´t like United´s fixs. Brown definetly an option!

Ramirez imo is always looking dangerous and with Essien coming back, i think he may just go even more forward.

Ya, that´s what i´m planning on doing regarding Ba. Now it´s Fletch --> Ba when he returns (hopefully soon)

Thanks so much every1 for your input! We´ll see if i have the balls to go down this route...

Need some help deciding my WC team:

    Vorm | Mignolet
    Enrique | Cahill | Santon | (a) | (b)
    Silva | Gerrard | Bale | (c) | (d)
    RVP | Fletcher | Aguero

    (a) & (b): Shotton, Kelly, RTaylor, Clark. Which 2 of these?
    (c) & (d): Sess + Dyer or Walters + Mcclean?

    Any suggestions?
